The Effect on Our Bodies

The liver is the chief cleaning organ in the body. Every foreign chemical we are exposed to passes throughthe liver. Here, most of the chemicals are subject to alteration by an enzyme system that ensures all thesecompounds become water-soluble so that the body can eliminate them. The proper functioning of all of theliver enzymes within this system is critical. If the process breaks down, or is incomplete in any way, some ofthe secondary compounds produced during the cleansing process may actually be more harmful than theoriginal foreign chemicals. In addition, the process often produces free radicals which can be highly reactive, causing further cell and tissue damage.4 A diversity of important nutrients is therefore required in the diet toensure optimal cleansing activity of the liver enzyme system, as well as protecting against any damage from thecompounds involved.

As the amount of chemical pollutants in the environment increases, so doesthe level of toxins in our bodies. This toxic burden has to be neutralised andeliminated. The major cleansing systems of the body are the liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, lymphatic system, spleen, lungs and skin. Thesesystems work together to rid our bodies of toxic materials. If the cleansingsystems are not working properly as a result of poor lifestyle habits, thebody accumulates toxins. This can result in a number of symptoms including

headache, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, irritability, depression, mentalconfusion, gastrointestinal irregularities, cardiovascular irregularities, flu-likesymptoms or allergic reactions including hives, stuffy or runny nose, sneezingor coughing. More serious problems are also attributed to foreign chemicalsthat are not metabolised efficiently in the liver, giving rise to a variety ofdegenerative diseases like arthritis, and proliferative conditions like cancer.2

How to initiate your"Spring Clean":Minimise Your Exposure to Toxic ChemicalsPrevention is the starting point for all good health and there are several things you can do to minimise yourexposure to foreign or toxic chemicals:

• Learn which foods are better for you and whichare not; and eat and drink less of those foodswhich contain potentially harmful ingredientssuch as high levels of saturated fats, caffeineand artificial ingredients. Where possible usefoods that have been organically grown and havenot been subjected to treatment with chemicals.

• Use filtered water and avoid drinks with highlevels of chemical sweeteners or artificialingredients.

• Maintain a healthy skin - it's your body's first lineof defense! GNLD's Nutriance SkinCare Rangenot only maintains youthful healthy skin but alsocontains protective ingredients such asantioxidants.

• Choose your household cleaners wisely. It isestimated that an average household will use 20to 30 personal and household cleaning productscontaining foreign chemicals. These includedetergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, colourants and perfumes.

GNLD tackled this problem back in 1958, when itpioneered the development of non-toxic, 100%biodegradable and environmentally-friendlyhome and personal care products. These includeGreen, LDC and Super-10. By replacing otherpersonal care and household cleaners with theseproducts, exposure to foreign chemicals issignificantly reduced, and so is the burden on thebody's cleansing systems.

sweep out the toxins

Start at the Cellular Level

The Liver:the primary cleanser

Our bodies are only as healthy as the individual cells from which we are made.In addition to foreign substances, too often, waste products from the normalfunctioning of our cells build up inside the cells and become toxic. The key toefficient cell function is a healthy cell membrane which is soft and permeable, allowing nutrients into the cell and allowing excretion of the waste products andtoxins out of the cell.

GNLD's exclusive Tre-en-en Grain Concentrates puts back into the diet theessential lipids and sterols that are missing from today's highly processedfoods, and which are needed for this cellular excretion of toxins to take place.

Final elimination of toxic wastes from the body is vital for optimal health.Proper functioning of the digestive tract plays a critical role in bothneutralising toxic substances and in the final elimination process. Severalfactors play a role in these cleansing functions:• A balance of beneficial bacteria in the intestinal flora is important not only

in terms of digestion, but also to help defend against unwantedbacteria and toxins and to detoxify harmful agents present in the gastro-intestinal tract.

GNLD's Acidophilus Plus provides 5 different types of beneficial bacteriaand, using targeted delivery technology, ensures survival against stomachacid and delivery of these microorganisms to the different sections of thesmall intestine where they are needed.

• Part of the cleansing process in the digestive tract is the elimination ofpathogenic bacteria, fungal infections and parasites. Nature has providedits own remedy for this in the form of the allium family of vegetables, which includes garlic. The compounds found in these vegetables are alsoknown to help detoxify some carcinogens, as well as preventing freeradical damage.

GNLD's Garlic Allium Complex combines the phytonutrients from anumber of this family of vegetables, again using targeted deliverytechnology.

• Smooth function of the digestive tract, transit times to eliminationand internal cleansing are all essential components of thedetoxification and elimination process of the body. Fibre is animportant ingredient in this process as it helps to detoxify the GItract. By increasing the bulk of the intestinal contents, it alsoimproves the transit time and improves elimination.

GNLD's All Natural Fibre contains a combination of different natural food fibres that support this process.

In addition, GNLD's herbal product Neo-Cleanse supports overallwellness through healthy elimination and internal cleansing. Itpromotes softening of the stool, enhanced peristaltic action andsupports bowel function. Neo-Cleanse calms and soothesdistressed digestive tissue and provides an astringent action thatsupports the final elimination function of the digestive system.

Being overweight, with too much fat, will hinder anycleansing program. If the body is not burning energyproperly, but is storing it as fat, the body's metabolicprocesses slow down and elimination of toxins is impaired.

Unfortunately, many weight-loss and detox programsare based on some type of fasting diet, working on theprinciple that the body will heal itself if the "stress" of digestion and intake of foreign chemicalsare eliminated. But such methods can do more harm than good as they compromise the body'snutritional intake.

The cleansing processes carried out by the liver notonly use a great deal of energy, but also requireadequate supporting nutrients for optimal enzymeactivity. If these nutrients are not available, thecleansing processes can be suppressed.

What is required is a broad-based nutritional programthat supports optimal liver enzyme activity byproviding all of the essential nutrients, helping prevent

muscle, blood and liver protein breakdown, helping tostabilise blood glucose levels, and burning off excessfat as energy.

NeoLifeShake is a scientifically developed nutritional program, based around the principle of glycaemic response control. It provides all of the essential nutrients whilst educating on the fundamentals of good health including proper eating and exercise - another important ingredient in the cleansing process.

Evidence indicates that a diet that is higher in quality protein and lower in total carbohydrate may provide the ideal activity for the liver enzyme systems.5,7

Carbohydrates should preferably be of the complex type, as simple sugars have been shown to slow down the activity of liver enzymes.5,6 NeoLifeShake includes correctly balanced amounts of proteins,

complex carbohydrates, essential fats, vitamins and minerals to meet this need and provide effective yet controlled weight-loss, withoutcompromising nutrient intake.

The Solution to Pollution

Developed by Dr. Arthur Furst, world-renowned toxicologist, GNLD's BetaGard was specifically formulated to defendthe body against harmful agents that are inhaled from the air, or ingested from food or water. It has been used as afundamental weapon against heavy metal toxicity resulting from the use of early chemotherapy in cancer patients.

BetaGard's synergistic blend of both antioxidants and detoxifying nutrients interrupt the toxic processes, neutralisethe toxins, and help protect against cellular damage from environmental pollutants. Its antioxidant protection comesfrom natural food-based betacarotene and other carotenoids sourced from carrot oil, plus vitamin C and thecomplete Vitamin E family of tocopherols and tocotrienols. The inclusion of B-Complex vitamins including riboflavin, niacin and pyridoxine, together with magnesium, also helps detoxify foreign substances. BetaGard helps protectagainst heavy metal contamination and boosts immune function. Zinc, selenium* and GTF chromium aid the body'svital defenses. (*New Zealand product only contains selenium).
