Outrigger on the Lagoon - Fiji February Staff Get Together

By Una Murray

The Outrigger on the Lagoon - Fiji (FOR) gathered together to honor their outstanding employees for the month of February and to recognize members of our vuvale (family) who have celebrated birthdays. Everyone enjoyed afternoon tea, cakes, and cookies, but most of all the Bula Spirit. General Manager Darren Shaw thanked the vuvale for their incredible dedication, hard work, and their ongoing commitment to the community. He also highlighted the changes that are taking place at the property, including the new look of the Vakavanua Lounge and the addition of exciting televised sporting events at The Baravi Bar. Carol Kahili, Executive Housekeeper of the Embassy Suites® - Waikiki Beach Walk® in Honolulu also addressed the group. Carol was at the property to train the FOR’s new Acting Housekeeping Manager Tepola Natadra. Carol recalled her first trip to Fiji—8 years and 5 months ago—when she came to train the pre-opening staff and said she was thrilled to have been chosen to return. She also complimented the staff on the impeccable service they provide and said she was very happy to see the Bula Spirit alive and well. Congratulations to our February Honorees:

That is why last week, I had such mixed emotions when I met with a group of employees who have chosen to leave our company, as their contribution to maximizing work opportunities for other members of our ‘ohana in these turbulent economic times. The group I met with had over 980 combined years of dedicated service to Outrigger—that is amazing! The individual years of loyal service ranged from three to 36. The commitment that each has demonstrated to our company is a quality that I deeply appreciate because every individual contributed to the continued success of Outrigger and OHANA in his or her own unique way. As I met each employee, I was reminded again and again how many of these special people I have been fortunate to know personally. In 963, a little over 45 years ago, I was working as a pathologist at Queen’s Medical Center when my father, Roy Kelley, asked me to help him out in Waikiki “for a little while” because the business was growing. At first it was just part time, and I continued to work at the hospital and teach at the brand new John A. Burns School of Medicine. By 970, it was full time—often overtime! Throughout those years, one of my favorite activities has always been to meet with employees in all departments. When we met last week, I enjoyed speaking with them and getting to know them a little better, and I thanked each one for their loyalty to the company. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing our hardworking employees in action offering Outrigger’s special brand of Island hospitality to guests from around the world, and later reading in letters of appreciation about the deep impression their aloha has made. I’ve been delighted by the number of employees who have earned career advancement and/or special recognition through many professional organizations in our industry. I have also been inspired by the personal accomplishments of many employees who have supported their families and our

community in so many ways. Many have children in colleges, universities, and schools at every level, including Ivy League schools. Others assist family members living in other parts of the world. Some travel themselves for rest and relaxation or attend classes to grow their skills and knowledge. Many simply enjoy the privilege and joy of being doting grandparents. Each life is different and fascinating. Outrigger has a long-standing set of values that were written by our own employees. We call these values Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a, or The Outrigger Way. The values range from Aloha and Kina‘ole (doing the right thing) to Nā Mea Ho‘okipa (hosts) and Kuleana (accountability). The one value that epitomizes the core strength of Outrigger is ‘Ohana (family)—“We are family working together joyfully to attain our goals and aspirations.” Outrigger has been a family-owned and -operated company for more than 60 years, and our employees are our extended family. So there is always a sense of sadness when we gather to say aloha to employees who are leaving us. We know that we will no longer be able to enjoy their company on a regular basis, as we have for so many years. At the same time, I am humbled knowing that these same individuals have dedicated a good portion of their lives and talents to help make our company a leader in Pacific hospitality. There is also shared excitement for each person who now has the opportunity to relax or pursue other passions. Some will be spending more

time with family, traveling or just enjoying some well-deserved rest. Many will be pursuing new challenges, such as to going back to school or volunteering with community organizations. This past week, I experienced all those emotions, as I joined David Carey, Dr. Chuck Kelley, Jean Rolles, and Ruthann Yamanaka in honoring these departing employees. We all knew that each one has contributed so much to our company. Their legacy will be felt for many years to come because so many of them have acted as mentors for younger co-workers, sharing their experience, expertise, and special tips on how to provide the best in Island hospitality for our guests. I thank each of them personally for their commitment and dedicated service. I am sure the entire Outrigger ‘ohana joins me in wishing them well, as they begin a new chapter in their lives.

Lunch & Learn: Keys to Effective

Parenting Discipline By Pila Hanson

Outrigger is happy to welcome back parenting expert John Rosemond to present at this month’s Lunch & Learn. More parents have problems with discipline than with any other single child-rearing issue. For many parents, these problems begin during toddler-hood with tantrums, toilet training resistance, and defiance, and only get worse. This presentation provides parents with the information and skills they need to begin making significant positive changes in their discipline style and, therefore, their children’s behavior. The “Keys” to Effective Discipline are Commanding Communication, Compelling Consequences, and Confirming Consistency. John describes these as three legs of the disciplinary tripod and emphasizes that weakness in one of the legs will cause the entire structure to “wobble,” if not collapse altogether. He shows parents, through example, how to communicate so as to “nip” misbehavior in the proverbial bud and/or “lower the boom” on misbehavior that has already grown to mammoth proportion. Finally, he provides parents with a concrete definition of consistency that makes practical sense. Parents are sure to leave feeling, not only relieved of significant guilt and anxiety, but also inspired, informed, and ready to go home and become calm, self-confident leaders of children.

John Rosemond has worked with families, children, and parents since 97 in the field of family psychology. In 97, John earned his master’s in psychology from Western Illinois University and was elected to the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. From 97-979, he worked as a psychologist in Illinois and North Carolina and directed several mental-health programs for children. From 980-990, John was in full-time practice as a family psychologist with Piedmont Psychological Associates in Gastonia. Presently, his time is devoted to speaking and writing. John is syndicated in approximately 225 newspapers nationwide. He has written eleven best-selling parenting books. He is also one of America’s busiest and most popular speakers and most certainly the busiest and most popular in his field. He’s known for his sound advice and humor and easy, relaxed, engaging style. In the past few years, John has appeared on numerous national television programs, including 20/20, Good Morning America, The View, Bill Maher’s Politically Incorrect, Public Eye, The Today Show, CNN, and CBS Later Today, as well as numerous print interviews.

Kona Hawaiian Resort Manager“Our stay at your resort these past 2 weeks was most enjoyable for our family. Your Tuesday evening Welcome certainly creates a warm and informative evening for those that have never visited before. Joy [Rothe] and Auntie TuTu [vendor] are a definite asset. Please continue this program; we look forward to it each time we visit. Albert [Kaho‘okaulana] and Ana [Katrina Bermoro] at the front desk were quite helpful, and Ricky [Stetz] and Gloria [Dual-Menendez] graciously helped with guidance on activities on the island. Units were clean and the housekeeping staff most kind. The Mahalo Party closed our stay nicely.”Ann & Sam AllamanShippenville PA

Wyndham Waikiki Beach Walk“. . . our experience at your [Neil Murakami] facility was excellent; even the blackout, which of course wasn’t anything you could prevent, was handled efficiently, and we appreciated receiving a flashlight during that awkward time. I am writing to you because of one standout great experience. One day, one of our sons left his Oakley brand sunglasses in the pool area restroom. By the time he noticed his mistake, it was many hours later. We were afraid he would never see them again - a valuable but painful lesson for him in being careful with belongings! But when I checked with the front desk, because hope does spring eternal, I learned that his sunglasses were there, being kept safely for him by the staff. I don’t know all the people to commend for this happy ending; certainly whoever found and turned in the sunglasses, possibly one of the cleaning staff, and of course the front desk employees, who kept the sunglasses safe for our son. He had given them up in his mind as lost forever; it was great to get them back. Our Hawaii trip was a very special time for our family; I wanted to let you know that we have many good memories of your facility!”Anne N. RutzMarietta, GA
