Dear Friends,Most of us view good health and wellness as key elements toan active and fulfilling life. Good overall health doesn’t comeeasily. Considerable effort is needed to maintain our well being. At LifePath the challenge is even greater. This annual report showshow we are helping the people we serve to improve their generalfitness. It is a vital aspect of quality care and one where we canbe more effective with your help.

Researchers have now shown what LifePath’s staff sees daily:people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities haveincreased rates of obesity, high blood pressure, and other fitness-related health challenges. As people age, these issues can becomeserious health and quality of life problems. Our clients’ need forsupportive services in many areas of daily living makes maintaining healthy habits even more difficult.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Healthy People 2010 document states, “Evidenceof the multiple health benefits of regular physical activity continues to mount. Regular physicalactivity can help to prevent and manage coronary heart disease, hypertension, noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, obesity, and mental health problems… On average, physically active people outlive those who are inactive.”

LifePath is working on several fronts to help people become more active. It can be as simple asapplauding individual initiative. I recently bumped into a gentleman we serve named Carlos whowas out in the community pushing a wheelchair for one of his friends. Thanks Carlos, and thanksalso to the staff who decided to get people moving that day!

We are addressing fitness in our community partnerships and advocacy efforts as well.LifePath is partnering with swimming pools, senior centers and fitness facilities so

people can enjoy local resources. This June LifePath will be a big participant inthe Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community that will take place in HistoricDowntown Bethlehem. This fun event combines fitness, public awarenessand fundraising for agencies like ours. Please join us on June 14thfor the walk or by sponsoring LifePath or one of our walkers. Visitwww.walkforahealthycommunity.org for more information. Bring a friend!

Advocacy is always critical to preserving and expanding the public fundingthat supports our services. We are disheartened by Governor Rendell’s proposed

budget for the new fiscal year which begins in just a few months. The Governorhas decided not to provide for a cost of living allowance (COLA) for staff working in

services like ours. This happens at a time when hard costs such as our health benefits are increasingby 10% or more. Compared to inflation, critical social services like LifePath’s have experienced a30% cut over the past 10 years while we are providing more services. Salaries in our field are alreadyfar too low and it is difficult to keep good staff. Please tell your state legislators to put a cost ofliving allowance back into the budget and to support House Bills 2160 and 2103. Your voice needsto be heard advocating for decent salaries and quality care.

LifePath is working hard to provide more opportunities for exercise, and for nutritional and otherhealth-focused education. Thank you for your support this past year and please join us again, however you can, to build on our efforts. Together we can make a difference.

Jared, a member of LifePath’sShawnee residential program, has been participating inEqui-librium’s therapeutichorseback riding program formore than 17 years since the ageof five. Each week, Jared and hisparents, Claude and Jamie visitIce Stone Farms in Snydersvillewhere Jared looks forward toseeing his friends – especially hisfour-legged friend, Sam! Jared, who has autism and epilepsy, uses horseback riding as ameans of improving his physicaland mental health, as well asreaching his cognitive, social, behavioral and communication

goals. Activities on horseback can be easily adapted tofit individuals with a variety of disabilities, thus providingmany physical and cognitive benefits beyond theobvious enjoyment of being surrounded by thesebeautiful animals!

LifePath’s Montgomery County Day Services program inNorristown participates in recreational group therapy nearby atLittle Wonders Child Growth and Development Center. EricPollock, the center’s licensed physical therapist, and his assistantwork alongside LifePath’s day program staff to provide fun, inter-active sensory and gross-motor activities especially designed forindividuals with special needs to increase their physical fitnessand social skills. Eric and his assistant use music, movement, games, adaptive devices and toys to provide the stimulation thatpeople require. During the warmer months, consumers walkfrom the day program to the center for their 45-minute sessions;during the colder months, Eric brings the center to LifePath!According to Day Services manager, Stephanie Vincent, her con-sumers absolutely love this program! Barbara, one of the con-sumers, actually squeals with delight inanticipation of attending thecenter’s programs! Evenconsumers who don’t alwayssmile grin from ear-to-earwhile engaging in therapy.

“Even consumers who don’talways smile grin fromear-to-ear while engagingin therapy.”

Every other Friday afternoon, Mary Rodriguez’s classroom atLifePath’s Lehigh adult day program in Bethlehem catches a seriouscase of “dance fever” that can only be cured through a little handclapping and getting down! The staff enjoy dancing to the infectiousbeats of Justin Timberlake as much as the consumers! Once themusic comes on, the room becomes all smiles and a flurry of activity.According to the American Music Therapy Association, music therapyhas been shown to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, help individuals to express feelings, enhance memory, improvecommunication and promotephysical activity. Ourconsumers say it’s just plainfun – and who could argue?

“Once the music comes on, theroom becomes all smiles anda flurry of activity.”

Every Monday from September through early spring, the residents of LifePath’sStoke Park Road residential program engage in some friendly competition aspart of the Lehigh Valley area’s MORA (Men of Retirement Age) bowling league. Each week, participants and volunteers gather at Town and Country Lanes inBethlehem and vie for the week’s top score. The residents of Stoke Park Roadhave been participating in the league for about 3 ½ years. The season culminateswith a bowling banquet, dinner and dance in April. During the off-season,the men spend their “spare” time competing in the local Special Olympicsbowling league. Because bowling is an indoor activity with minimal equipmentadaptations and is easily accessible across the country, it’s a great form ofrecreation for people of all ability levels.
