American Idealism: The Films of Frank Capra Reid Schultz, Filmmaker, Columbia College

Join writer, filmmaker, and academic Reid Schultz as he analyzes four classic films by one of America’s most beloved filmmakers of all time. His films truly encapsulated the idea of idealism triumphing over evil, and he was rewarded with three consecutive Academy Awards for Best Director. Capra’s series of “social films” dissected a new America within the confines of the Depression and the political changes that occurred during the 1930s. His wholesome, feel-good themes gave hope to a burdened audience and represented what American cinema was all about - entertainment within a strongly humanitarian context - and made him one of the most popular and respected filmmakers of the 20th century.

It Happened One NightClark Gable and Claudette Colbert star in this classic screwball comedy about a spoiled heiress running away from her family who is helped by a man who is actually a reporter in need of a good story. The film won the Oscar for Best Picture and influenced a generation of films about battle of the sexes, conflicts between rich and poor, and road pictures where the journey leads to love. The film also won Oscars for Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress and propelled Columbia Pictures into the ranks of a major film studio. (1934, 105 min.)

Jean Arthur plays the reporter on the job who falls for him. Capra won his 2nd Best Director Oscar for the film. (1936, 115 min.)

Lost HorizonBritish diplomat Robert Conway and a small group of civilians crash land in the Himalayas and are rescued by the people of the mysterious, Eden-like valley of Shangri-la. Protected by the mountains from the world outside, where the clouds of World War II are gathering, Shangri-la provides a seductive escape for the world-weary Conway. Starring Ronald Coleman and Jane Wyman, the film is one of Capra’s darkest and most cynical films about the sociopolitical conditions of the 1930s and the coming of WWII. (1937, 100 min.)

In Washington, however, Smith discovers many of the shortcomings of the political process as his earnest goal of a national boys’ camp leads to a conflict with the state political boss, Jim Taylor. Taylor first tries to corrupt Smith and then later attempts to destroy Smith through a scandal. This is the kind of comedy-drama about American values and history that only a director like Capra could make. (1939, 120 min.)

Instructor SpotlightJoyce HaworthHistorian

Joyce Haworth has a master’s degree in history from the University of Chicago and has taught history at a number of colleges in the area. Her goal in teaching history is to understand the why and the how of history — why people in the past behaved in the way that they did, why events played out in the way that they did. British novelist L.P. Hartley said, “The past is a foreign country — they do things differently there.” When preparing to give a lecture on a certain topic or era, Joyce always asks, how did these events look to the people of the past, and why did their actions make sense to them? For instance, in the Hamilton-Burr duel, it made perfect sense to Alexander Hamilton to accept that challenge.  Joyce tries to sit with the people of the past until she understands why they did what they did, and share that with her students.  Joyce thoroughly enjoys teaching older adults because they are on board for that kind of journey. “They are interested in the kinds of historical questions that I am interested in and they bring their educational and professional experiences to the topic.” Joyce leaves a NSSC lecture energized by the experience.

President Grant could have made Reconstruction better, but instead he allowed it to become worse. Historian Gary Midkiff will review this tumultuous period.

By downplaying the British army, these myth makers detract from the real achievements of the American soldier. Professor Allardice will try and set the record straight.

Art Makers North Members Mixed Media ExhibitionMarch 8-April 26, 2018

Art Makers North is a collective group of amazing, widely exhibited artists from all over the Chicagoland area. Ann Rosen, former Director of the Art Center Highland Park brought this group together and initiated monthly meetings in a variety of art studios including the NSSC Studio in 2016. In these gatherings the artists share about materials, techniques and exhibit opportunities and support each other with positive critiques occasionally. Many members are also involved as members of NSSC, the Art Center of Highland Park, Evanston Art Center and the North Shore Art League. We are very excited to present this new exhibition for you viewing pleasure.

Interested in having your artwork exhibited in our Gallery? If you have artwork that 1ou would like to submit to hang in one of the gallery shows, fill out a “Request to Exhibit” form located in a folder on the bulletin board in the Art Studio. Forms should be completed and submitted two weeks before the exhibition opens. Once completed, put the form in the folder that is labeled “Completed Forms” located in the Fine Arts Studio. Any work submitted must be framed or presented in such a way that it is ready to hang.

Instructor SpotlightNancy TobiasTai Chi Instructor

Nancy Tobias loves Tai Chi and has been practicing it for over 25-years. Once she began, she practiced diligently because she liked how it made her feel and wanted to have something physically beneficial to do as she aged. Nancy became accredited in Yang style Tai Chi in 1996, and has had the good fortune of studying with Chinese masters. Nancy has been teaching at the North Shore Senior Center for 16-years and enjoys teaching because she is able to share this important practice with seniors who gain a whole host of benefits like strength, increased range of motion, balance, agility, and mental focus. The movements are slow, controlled, and deliberate while you maintain a relaxed standing posture. Whether new to Tai Chi or a skilled practitioner, the students go at their own pace and can experience the positive effects of Tai Chi.
