DIABETES PREVENTION CONTIN A Mercy Hospital Publication - Fall 2019 Lifeline A MESSAGE FROM OUR COACHES: As we kick-off football season, we remember what this sport truly means to us. It’s about the gathering of friends who become family, delicious food, and playful squabbles. Our Diabetes Prevention Program team began our game in October 2018 and is now coming to a bittersweet finish towards the end zone. However, we’re not upset because we’re still in the game. The crowd is cheering, our teammates are by our side, we’re advancing down the yard line full of optimism because we know how far we’ve come. Even though the opponents, #01 Unhealthy Choices, #02 Unsupportive People, and #03 Life Pressures are glaring behind us and ready to attack at any moment, we’re not going to give up. We are facing our adversaries directly because we recognize them and we’re not afraid anymore. We’re in control. Our coaches have a play Game on! The Rhonda Kay Skelton Birthing Center at Mercy Hospital received two grants from The Mercy Foundation that enabled Mercy to add wireless technology used for fetal monitoring and a new option for pain intervention for moms in labor.

Wireless Fetal MonitorThe new Monica Novii wireless fetal monitor allows

moms the freedom to move around during labor without having to readjust belts or cables. For mothers at 37 weeks or above, the bluetooth device monitors fetal heart rate, maternal heart rate and contractions.

“The new wireless monitor allows laboring mothers more freedom to move around the room or hallway without having to readjust equipment,” said Senja Ruuska, RN, Mercy Inpatient Manager. “It is more comfortable for moms, while still allowing our OB staff to get the information they need to provide optimal care.”

In addition to the wireless monitor, The Mercy Foundation also funded three new standard fetal monitors for the Birthing Center.

Nitrous OxideMercy now offers a new pain management option for

laboring mothers, nitrous oxide. Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a non-invasive anesthetic that is controlled by the patient.

“Used during contractions, nitrous oxide makes moms a little more comfortable, taking the edge off,”

Mercy Birthing Center adds wireless monitor, nitrous oxide

Ruuska explained. “It’s a nice option for our moms and requires less monitoring than other interventions.”

Administered through a facemask controlled by the mother during contractions, nitrous oxide is odorless and tasteless. It can be used throughout labor and is short acting.

“Because it doesn’t last long in a mother’s system, other pain interventions are still available to mothers if they so choose,” Ruuska said. “Our OB staff is excited to offer this new option to mothers in our care.”

Mothers considering using nitrous oxide during labor should discuss this option with their doctor.

for us in mind, but we also have the skill to be creative and change up the play to continue to get closer to the goal.

There may be unpredictable conditions such as the frigid winters, humid summers or potlucks, but we operate under any condition. We know that if the play doesn’t work out, we huddle up to readjust. Each time we achieve a touchdown, we are ecstatic with excitement and the motivation increases more and more in time. We’re here to fight through the sweat and tears because we have loyalty and perseverance. We will always be one step closer to the end zone than if we didn’t do anything at all.

We’re so proud of our diabetes prevention team this year. With their teamwork, they gained the knowledge, skills, and friendships to be able to achieve their goals whether it was weight loss, stress management, organized meal planning, or decreasing joint pain through activity. From October 2018 – August 2019, the team lost 312 lbs. total. That’s the weight of about 312 footballs!

The greatest part of this program is that everyone comes from different life experiences. We encourage a safe, non-judgmental space where we can all learn and grow.

Do you want to see what you’re capable of? YOU can join our new team starting this October! Please call us at 218.485.5653 to register. Call now before we fill up!

We are looking forward to helping you reach your end zone this year!

At its August Board meeting, Mercy’s Board of Directors voted to send Request for Proposals (RFPs) to Gateway Family Health Clinic, St. Luke’s Hospital, and Essentia Health in order to develop a more formal partnership for the future.

Mercy’s Board has discussed partnership or formal alignment opportunities with other healthcare organizations in the past. Their most recent formal discussions occurred in 2010 with Essentia. There have also been many joint meetings with Gateway Clinic over the years. The primary driver behind these meetings/discussions was centered on advancing healthcare (i.e. Mission) in our region.

The Board’s current action was taken in response to declining patient volumes over the past several

Mercy seeks partnershipyears. For example, in 2008, Mercy Hospital’s inpatient market share was 33%. In 2018, Mercy’s market share declined 40% from the ’08 levels. That means today, 4 out of 5 people from our service area are receiving hospital care elsewhere.

Taking this information into account, the Board determined that the need for a strong partner who shares Mercy’s mission and values is critical to the hospital’s future success; only through a strong partnership will Mercy be able to continue to offer and expand needed services.

As part of this mission-driven process, the RFP includes aspects Mercy is looking for in a working partnership. It is expected that a decision on a potential partnership will be made by the end of this year.

WHAT IS the vision Program? The Vision Program is a method of therapy to train the eye muscles

and brain to work more efficiently. Mercy’s Vision Program is provided by occupational therapists, in conjunction with behavioral optometrists from Northern Minnesota Eye Care, who have received extensive training in improving the mechanics of the visual system and how the brain processes, decodes and stores visual information. Specifically, the Vision Program can help to develop or improve visual skills, visual comfort, ease and efficiency, and change how a person processes or interprets visual information.

WHO WOuLD BENEFIT FrOM the vision Program?A variety of conditions may benefit from the Vision Program. These include:uDifficulty learning in school: Conditions such as poor

eye teaming, focusing, tracking, and visualization skills can all negatively affect learning.

If your child has these conditions, they may report:- Losing place while reading- Skipping lines of text- Headaches - Movement of text or pictures on a page, etc.uVisual rehabilitation for injury or illness: A

neurological disorder or trauma can affect a person’s vision. This includes concussion, traumatic brain injuries, strokes, developmental delays, and other neurological ailments.

WHAT DOES THE PrOGrAM INVOLVE?Once the patient has been evaluated and determined appropriate for the Vision Program, the occupational therapist and optometrist collaborate to develop a treatment plan. Patients are typically seen in office once per week for a period of 45 minutes to 1 hour by the occupational therapist. During these office visits, the patient can expect to participate a variety of exercises to build strength and skills to support the visual system. The patient also will be provided with exercises to practice at home.

Before & After

Jon Lund, Mercy Board of Director, was one of 11 hospital trustees from across Minnesota recognized for earning certification through the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) trustee certification program.

The comprehensive certification process prepares hospital trustees to effectively meet the growing demands of serving on a hospital board and to be strong health care and community leaders.

A Mercy board member since 2017, Lund represents the City of Moose Lake.

By participating in MHA’s voluntary certification program, hospital trustees receive training on current health care trends, governance best practices, ethics, government regulations, patient safety and quality. Participants undergo 35 hours of coursework, making

Minnesota’s initiative the most comprehensive in the nation.

Trustees who have completed MHA board certification are eligible to participate in an additional eight hours of coursework to obtain advanced certification, which provides education to ensure excellence, innovation and accountability in health care governance.

“In Minnesota, more and more hospital trustees are formally preparing themselves to address the complex issues facing hospitals and health systems today,” said Lawrence Massa, MHA president and CEO. “Our trustee certification program proactively ensures that hospital leaders are equipped to make good decisions. Earning certification demonstrates a trustee’s commitment to the patients and communities the hospital serves.”
