Banyan Approach is a quarterly publication for our customers, vendors and friends.

The starting point of all achievement is desire...weak desire brings weak results. As you start the new year, what is going to be different from last year? What is the one big project, initiative, challenge or opportunity that must be completed in this new year? In the absence of clearly-defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it. Many lost 15 pounds and some 30 pounds showing all of us that when you set your mind to do some-thing, you can achieve it. This year begins our 35th year at Fort Lauderdale Executive Air-port and our passion for 2014 is to be your first choice FBO in South Florida. If you receive any FBO surveys, we urge you to take a few minutes to complete them and please think of Banyan. We strive to exceed your expectations and the surveys reveal whether or not we are accomplishing that goal. To every teammate at Banyan, there is no greater compliment than to be recognized in the aviation industry as a top FBO.

Shawn Mack, Banyan’s director of train-ing, recently spoke at the AVM Summit that was held in Orlando. His presentation cov-ered the OSHA Hazardous Communication Standard, 1900.1200 and the importance of conducting initial and recurrent training of hazardous chemical standards. He also talked about OSHA’s requirement that em-ployees be trained on the new labeling sys-

tem (i.e. pictograms, hazard statements, precautionary statements and signal words). The updated OSHA’s Hazard Communications standard will improve the consistency and quality of hazard information, making workers safer and employers more competitive. Shawn Mack is focused on safety and has won the Safety Leader of the Year Award from Ground Support Worldwide Magazine twice, first in 2008 for refining Banyan’s spotting procedures and again in 2010 for developing Lightning Hold Procedures.

We recently replaced our lobby artwork with some pieces of the Martin-Young Aviation Collection and since then, customers are purchasing the art right off the walls and taking it home with them. As you can guess, that would leave some bare walls in our lobby, but thanks to the gallery that handles this collection, Steven F. Greenwald Design, Inc., we are able to replace the artwork immediately. “What I love about this artwork is the amazing colors that just pop off the walls,” says Jack Howell of Georgia. “When I saw the Piper Cubby, in the lobby, I knew I just had to buy it and take it home in my plane.” In addition to selling the framed artwork in the lobby, Banyan Pilot

Shop has a selection of pieces available in the store, with the complete selection available on-line at banyanpilotshop.com/art. On-line selec-tions include prints and canvases in a variety of price ranges and sizes. The canvas selections are hand embellished and signed by the artists making them a truly unique and treasured piece of artwork. The Martin-Young Aviation Collection is created by artists Frank Martin and Judeen Young. They combine their techniques to create a hybrid collabora-tion of abstract paintings and collage techniques. The result is a unique avia-tion art collection ranging from the evolution of flight and classic military aircraft to today’s latest commercial and general aviation aircraft.

I’m often asked by both current aircraft owners and non-owners what options are available for owning or operating private aircraft and what is the most economical. While there are numerous ways of owning an aircraft some of the most noteworthy are as follows:Whole Ownership: This is traditional aircraft ownership whereby a corporation or individual owns the aircraft and enjoys all of the bene-fits. This offers maximum flexibility, tax advantages and has the great-est amount of financial risk. Partnership: This method of ownership is similar to whole owner-ship but the benefits and risks are shared by the group of partners. The benefits include lower individual costs while the negatives include less availability of the aircraft to any one partner.Lease: This is similar to leasing a car whereby the lessee pays a monthly rate for the aircraft for a given time period. With interest rates being so low, the popularity of a lease seems lessened. It’s often used by companies that don’t want to show the aircraft on the balance sheet. (This is not to be confused with a lease-back.)Fractional Ownership: This popular method of aircraft ownership allows an entity to purchase a “share” of an aircraft. Shares of own-ership can be ½ of the aircraft down to just 1/16 of the aircraft. The quantity of available shares for a given aircraft model is determined by

the fractional service provider. Each of the owners is allocated a given number of flight hours annually based upon their share of equity. Owners also pay monthly management fees.Jet Cards: This popular form of travel is similar to a prepaid phone card whereby the card has a given value and that value is reduced each time you fly. This form of travel is popular due to its simplicity and a cardholder only pays for what they use. Some operators allow a card holder to utilize different aircraft types within the operator’s fleet depending upon their requirements. Charter: This method of travel is similar to renting a limousine. You pay the cost to take you to your destination and back at a quoted flat rate. Charter is popular for its simplicity. The negative is you will pay for the aircraft to return home empty if you elect to stay at your destination for an extended period of time. If an aircraft was chartered to take a week-long ski vacation, you will either pay for the aircraft and crew to sit on the ground at the desti-nation or you will pay to have the aircraft fly home empty. We’re happy to discuss the merits and pitfalls associated with each of these transportation methods in greater detail. Please feel free to call anytime.

Egbe UpdateDonations, Volunteers and Missionaries = Remarkable Progress

The 5 year project is extensive and other aviation companies have joined in as donors and on volunteer teams. If you would like to learn more about this project that will save lives for many years to come, look up the website and follow us on Facebook : www.egbehospital.org.

For those that have been following the rebuilding of Egbe Hospital in Nigeria, we are thrilled to report that we have made fantastic progress throughout 2013. Project Leader, Don Campion, along side Samaritan’s Purse, SIM, Banyan teammates, private companies and volunteers have traveled to Nigeria three times over the past year to rebuild and revitalize this hospital in the bush.

The 10,000 sq. foot main hospital building is nearing completion. Perseverance has been the key to a great year.

Ten shipping containers have been sent from Miami to Nigeria.

Laying one mile of donated pipe to bring water to the hospital. Teamwork takes the place of a crane. 9
