Alpha Hydroxy AcidsAlpha Hydroxy acids (AHAs) are naturally occurring acids commonly derived from plants. Some examples are Glycolic Acid (Sugar Cane), Lactic Acid (Milk), Tartaric Acid (Grapes), Citric Acid (Citrus Fruits), Malic Acid (Apples), and Mandelic Acid (Bitter Almonds). These acids work at the very base of the stratum corneum, the outer most layer of the skin, dissolving the cement that holds dead skin cells together. This increases cell turnover and influences the structure of new stratum corneum being made, resulting in skin that is more flexible, smooth, and even in tone. At greater con-centrations (12%-20%), deeper dermal effects, such as collagen formation, are observed. Irritation may be a problem. Those with sensitive skin will want to stick with less irritating AHAs such as Mandelic and Malic Acid.

Retinol Retinol is a pure and active form of Vitamin A. It’s small enough to penetrate the outer layers of the skin and repair the lower layers, where collagen and elastin reside.

Retinol increases cell turnover and exfoliation by stimulating cell production beneath the skin’s surface. With accelerated exfoliation, dead skin cells are removed revealing the healthier cells underneath. Skin will appear smoother, softer; pores will appear smaller and less noticeable; and signs of aging will start to diminish.

Studies have also found that this cell reju-venation produces healthier skin cells and increased collagen. The skin exfoliation also unclogs pores and fades acne scars. Retinol is not recommended for use on sensitive skin.


PHAsHighly moisturizing, Poly Hydroxy Acids provide all the smoothing and anti-wrinkle benefits of AHAs but without the irritation. Poly Hydroxy Acids also contain antioxidant benefits, a property not found in Glycolic Acid. Excellent for sensitive/dry skin types.
