General

Constructed with proper materials.

Life-raft canopy

The life-raft shall have a canopy to protect

the occupants from exposure which is

automatically set in place.

It shall provide insulation against

heat and cold.

Each entrance shall be clearly

indicated and be provided with efficient

It shall be provided with at least one

viewing port in life-rafts accommodating up

to 25 persons.

It shall admit sufficient air for the

occupants at all times, even with the

collecting rain water.

Its interior shall be of a color that does

not cause discomfort to the occupants.

Main buoyancy chamber

Not less than two separate compartments,

each inflated through a non-return

inflation valve on each compartment.

The buoyancy chambers shall be so

arranged that in the event of one of the

compartments being damaged or failing

to inflate, the intact compartment shall be

able to support, with positive freeboard

over the life-raft's entire number of

persons which the life-raft is permitted to

accommodate.

The floor of the life-raft shall be

waterproof and shall be capable of

being sufficiently insulated against

cold by means of one or more

compartments that the occupants can

inflate.

The life-raft shall be fitted with an

efficient painter of length equal to not

less than twice the distance from the

stowed position to the waterline in the

lightest seagoing condition or 15 meters

whichever is the greater.

At least one entrance shall be fitted with

a semi-rigid boarding ramp to enable

persons to board the life-raft from the

sea.

There shall be means inside the life-raft

to assist persons to pull themselves into

the life-raft from the ladder

The stability of the life-raft when

loaded with its full complement of

persons and equipment shall be such

that it can be towed at speeds of up to

3 knots in calm water.

The life-raft shall be fitted with water

pockets for stability.

Life raft light

A manually controlled lamp shall be fitted to the top of the raft canopy.

The light shall be white and be capable of operating continuously for at least 12 hrs with a luminous intensity of not less than

4.3 cd in all directions of the upper hemisphere. If the light is a flashing light it

shall flash at a rate of not less than 50 flashes and not more than 70 flashes per

minute.

Float-free

arrangements

The life raft painter system shall

provided a connection between the

ship and the life raft and shall be so

arranged as to ensure that the life raft

when released and, in case of an

inflatable life raft, inflated is not

dragged under by the sinking ship.

Hydrostatic

release units

• Be constructed of compatible materials.

• Galvanizing or other forms of coating parts shall not be accepted.

• Automatically release the life raft at a depth of not more than 4 m.

• Have drains to prevent the accumulation of water.

• Be marked with its type and serial number.

• Prevent release when seas wash over the unit.

Weak link

if a weak link is used in the float-free

arrangement, it shall:

• Not be broken by the force required to

pull the painter from life raft container

• Be of sufficient strength to permit the

inflatation of the life raft and break

under a strain of 2.2 +/- 0.4 KN

The purpose of the weak link

• When the ship sank about 4 m the hydrostatic

release unit will set the life raft free to sea

surface but its painter is still attached to the

ship’s deck.

• During the ship went down it pull the painter

and open the life raft.

• When the painter is totally out the sank ship try

to take the life raft down with her at this the

weak link will broke when the strain exceed 2.2
