Winetastingamong Friends

Think SmallInvite 4 to 10 friends to your casual colony, and let nature take its course. Once you’ve hosted a few gatherings, expand your guest list, and go for more elaborate food pairings, and wine selections.

Big PlanChoose a day and stick to it. Make sure people RSVP.

Little DosesRepeat this to yourself: “I am tasting, not drinking.” One or two ounces will be enough to sample the wine. A 750 milliliter bottle has 25 ounces in it and can serve up to 15 tasters.

Go BlindBy covering the bottles, removing capsules and corks before guest arrive, you are ensuring that guests won’t be influenced by preconceptions or clues.

Pairing FoodAvoid complicated flavors. Nibbling on bread or crackers between tastings will help keep flavors fresh.

Have FunYou don’t have to be a wild party animal, but you should certainly have a great time. Winetasting is a fun way to bring people together, break the ice, and really enjoy. After all, it was your cool idea to do something new and different.

Hold the glass by the stem and tip it away from you, preferably against a white background. Examine it carefully for color and clarity. Is it bright or dull? Intense or muted? Clear or cloudy?

Swirl the wine in the glass, avoiding the dreaded dribble. Swirling actually enhances the smell of the wine by releasing aromas and allowing them to react with air. Take one big dramatic sniff of the wine. The sense of smell is incredibly important to how the sense of taste works. Finally, describe what you smell.

Take a generous sip and let the wine rest in your mouth. It may help to aspirate, or draw a little air into your mouth. What does it taste like? At this point, you can either choose to spit orto swallow the wine. Either way, you will get the full effect of the taste.

Guide

A REALParty Animal

It’s pretty cool to share the namesake of one of Australia’s littlest treasures: little penguins. Uniquely social birds with BIG personality, little penguins are actually the smallest penguin breed in the world, measuring in at about one foot tall. Smallness aside, these little penguins live a great life on the beaches of the South Eastern coast of Australia. If you ever do visit the colony, be sure to say ‘G-day’ to the little penguin with the BIG smile.
