Life Lessons from Skip

Dennis P. Heaton1

Skip’s published work provides abiding evidenceof his intellectual brilliance and his bold vision. Justas importantly, however, the legacy of his immenselyloving heart lives on through the transforming influ-ence he had in the lives of those who met him. I bestremember his beaming smile, his warm arm aroundmy shoulders, his twinkling eyes so focused on justme, his resonant voice so full of wit and wisdom.Through these Skip taught me:

● to respect and appreciate every associate● to admire the positive potential of what some-

one is yet to become

● to expect for myself and my students successthat meets the highest standards of excellence

● to be faithful to my own ideals● to say ‘‘How are you’’ in a way that says ‘‘I

really care about you’’● to be natural and easy and fun to be around.

These are the qualities of friendship that we allfelt from Skip and that we can continue to give toeach other with the kind of joy with which Skip gavehis friendship to us.
