“In this deeply personal and often hilarious story, Kurshan shows us how the Talmud’s thousands of strange and demanding pages … become a conversation about how best to live one’s life. Kurshan awakens us to our imperfect world’s hidden magnificence – and to the power of literature to inspire human resilience. A stunning and gorgeous memoir.” – Dara Horn, author of Eternal Life, a Novel

AJ “SHABBAT-LUCK” NOVEMBER 15TH & DECEMBER 13TH

AJ’s next two Shabbat-Luck dinners are scheduled for Friday evenings, November 15th and December 13th. “Shabbat-Luck,” is a vegetarian/dairy potluck meal taking place after the conclusion of Kabbalat Shabbat services at around 6:30 p.m.

These pitch-in meals are free of charge and open to the community. Come enjoy the camaraderie of family and friends while celebrating Shabbat with a casual vegetarian-dairy meal, complete with wine and dessert!

Since the meals are not being prepared at AJ, none of the food may be taken into AJ’s kosher kitchens. Additionally, we ask that you bring serving utensils with you for your dish, since AJ’s kosher utensils may not be used. Keep in mind that no meat, nor meat by-products may be brought in. Vegetarian or all-dairy dishes are fine. Please bring items in disposable aluminum pans. If cooking isn't something you enjoy, consider bringing something pre-packaged such as wine, challah, or dips containing a kosher symbol.

AJ PRAGMATIC SPIRITUALITY

AJ’s Pragmatic Spirituality discussion series has come to an end. Courtney and Marty Snyder worked very hard over the past two

years providing AJ members and others with a wonderful experience! AJ sends its deepest gratitude to Courtney and Marty for their dedication, and for offering such a creative and “out-of-the-box” series! The message below is from Courtney and Marty:

“After two years and fifty sessions, we are concluding Pragmatic Spirituality, in order to give more attention to other areas of our lives. We, and seemingly other participants, experienced deep personal growth from the evolving discussions and enjoyed meaningful friendships. We're grateful to the shul for hosting the discussions.”

NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Below are excerpts from the High Holy Day appeal delivered by Bill Esakov, President of Adath Jeshurun.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Adath Jeshurun Life and Legacy Society. These folks have pledged to leave a gift to

AJ in their will or estate plan to ensure the financial viability of AJ for the next generation. For those who would like more information about the Life and Legacy program, please call the AJ Office and get contact information for our co-chairs, Sidney Hymson and Frankye Gordon. What a difference a year makes. At this time last year, we felt relatively safe in our synagogue, and we somewhat took for granted that synagogue shootings were unheard of in the United States. Of course, our sense of security was shattered on October 27, 2018, when we all heard the horrible news about the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. Eleven Jews were murdered and seven were injured in this mass shooting that occurred while Shabbat morning services were being held.

We were horrified again on April 27, 2019 when a gunman armed with an assault weapon fired shots inside the Chabad of Poway Synagogue in California, killing one woman and injuring three others.

At AJ, we took these events very seriously, learning how to best protect our members, guests, and staff from this frightening threat. AJ suddenly found ourselves spending tens of thousands of dollars for security improvements that we had not planned on, nor budgeted for. We were fortunate that we received a grant from the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence to help cover some of these costs. In addition, AJ members made generous donations to help cover some of the costs that were identified in the immediate aftermath of the shootings.

Unfortunately, AJ’s expenses for security improvements continue to absorb a large amount of synagogue dollars which had been earmarked for other purposes. Adath Jeshurun recently participated in a community-wide effort to improve Jewish Louisville’s readiness to handle security threats. As part of that program coordinated by the JCL, a security expert performed an in-depth security review of each synagogue and Jewish organization. Adath Jeshurun recently received our 40-page security review complete with many additional suggested security updates. Although all of the recommendations in the report may not be feasible, we will certainly consider the report in its entirety. This means that additional security dollars will be needed for implementation, as well as for our more frequent use of security guards at events.

I hope that we can count on each of you to help us provide these necessary security measures, as well as to help us balance our budget in light of this drain on synagogue dollars. On behalf of the AJ Board of Trustees, I wish to thank everyone in advance for your generous support of our Congregation.”

THE AJ MINYAN NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Do you want a minyan to be available when it’s your turn to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish for a loved-one?

AJ is very fortunate to have a twice-daily minyan. We are so thankful for those who regularly attend our minyan so that others may have the opportunity to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. As some of our senior minyanaires are finding it difficult to support the minyan regularly, we

need some of our younger members to step up and help us continue to provide this vital service for our Congregation. PLEASE HELP! Can you attend minyan just once a week? We are counting on you!

Also, AJ needs help covering the costs of operating our daily minyan. The congregation spends over $50 per week just providing bagels. This is in addition to the cost of cream cheese, newspaper subscriptions, daily coffee, coffee supplies, and paper goods. Currently, minyan expenses exceed minyan donations by about $6,000. Please consider helping us to continue providing bagels, coffee, and newspapers for our morning minyan. Donations may be made to the Rabbi Robert B. Slosberg Minyan Fund via the AJ website, or by calling the AJ Office at 458-5359. Your support is very much appreciated!
