The hunt for ahealthy Easter

Easter has traditionally been associated with indulging in hot cross buns, one or two hundredEaster eggs and plenty of other sweet delights. However, this year if you don’t fancy undoing allthe good work you did during lent we’ve got plenty of tips and advice on how you and the kidscan have a healthy (and fun!) Easter

Happy huntingThere is nothing more fun then getting thefamily together for an Easter egg hunt. What’smore they are great way to get the family outand about doing exercise. If you’re looking forsome ‘egg’spiration, Queen Elizabeth CountryPark will be hosting a special Easter Egg hunt on1 April as well as their popular Butser egg roll.

Alternatively, if you want to try doing oneyourself at home there are plenty of websiteswith simple templates to download. TheWoodland Trust Nature Detectives site at www.naturedetectives.org.uk offers a hunt completewith printable egg pictures, ideas sheet, cluetags, map template and is completely free!

Spring clean your dietWhen spring is around the corner it’s a goodtime to refresh the diet a little, swapping outsome of the winter comfort foods in favour

of the abundant fresh vegetables. One of thereasons to buy organic produce is to limitingestion of pesticides. But this is of coursemore expensive. If you’d like to save a littleon your grocery bill, you can prioritise. TheEnvironmental Working Group has identifiedthe top 12 most pesticide-heavy crops as:Peaches, Apples, Sweet Bell Peppers, Celery,Nectarines, Strawberries, Cherries, Pears,Grapes, Spinach, Lettuce, and Potatoes. So you may want to buy organic. The leastcontaminated crops were: Onions, Avocado,Sweet Corn, Pineapples, Mango, Asparagus,Sweet Peas, Kiwi Fruit, Bananas, Cabbage,Broccoli, and Papaya - no need to buy organicfrom a pesticide point of view. To save onquality meat, try the fish counter for someline-caught (avoid farmed as a rule of thumb),sustainable and highly nutritious foods suchas Sardine, Herring, Pollock, Dab, Gurnard orHaddock to name a few.

Nutrivital’s Joe Summerfield’s topsupplement recommendations:l Acidophilus Complex - Eight billion live

healthy bacteria per capsule, for digestivehealth - key to a healthy immune system.

l MultiMax - Our multi-vitamin and mineral.Highest quality, potent andcomprehensive to cover the bases.

l Daily Greens - Vegetable and herb basedalternative to a multivitamin for gentledaily support.

l Organic Spirulina - Superfood algae burstingwith nutrients, particularly good support forthose detoxing or dieting.

l Vitamin B Complex - A very high qualityblend of the B vitamins, providing excellentenergy and nervous system support.

healthSize does matterIf you still find yourself with a chocolatecraving this Easter, opt for a small sizedplain egg and be sure to make the mostof it by savouring a small amount at atime. It’s fine to have a treat every nowand then, but remember, chocolate is highin saturated fat and calories! Personal trainer,Rocky Sole also suggests exercising for youreggs, “When fighting in a boxing ring, malescan burn up to 1034 calories per hour andfemales up to 887 calories…during oneENERGETIX boxing class our clients burn upto 600 calories, that’s 3 Crème eggs/ Maltesersbunnys or 20 mini eggs!” If you fancy fightingthe fat (literally) then Rocky Sole’s AdultsBoxing classes take place Mondays andThursdays- 7-8.30pm with Kids Boxing forunder 11s on Sundays 11-12.30pm.

Enjoy different delightsIf you’re planning an Easter family feast’ don’tworry there are plenty of ways to make healthyfood fun and healthy. Our food feature onpage 26 has a variety of eggless recipes fromPetersfields Natural Apothecary, Mooka Ltdand JSW. Plus you can always make traditionalfoods healthier with a few slight changes. For example instead of butter on your hotcross buns, why not try low fat cream cheese.

Similarly when it comes to the main mealyou can make the traditional roast healthierby cooking your potatoes with their skins onso they absorb less fat and keep hold of theirnutrients and adding more vegetables to yourmeal rather than fatty Yorkshires.

Alternative treatHaving a healthy Easter doesn’t have to be allabout deprivation and exercise – you can treatyourself too! A great way to get you set for thenew season is to take some time out and enjoyan alternative treatment. Jacky Milner-Walkerat the Centre of Complementary Medicinerecommends acupuncture as the perfectspringtime therapy. “Acupuncture can behelpful to balance the body and is particularlygood at helping with hay fever.”

Be a good eggAs well as treating yourself with differentluxuries you don’t have to over-load yourloved ones with chocolate. Instead givethem something they can keep and isactually helping a good cause! After thesuccess of the Bulmer House Big Knitfor 2012, Dilys Lownsborough, of DilysDesigns has embarked on a new fundraisingcampaign for Bulmer house ResidentialCare home in Petersfield in the form of

different knitted Easter, creatives. ‘Witha range of knitted chicks, rabbits and‘Russian-style’ decorative eggs to choosefrom, each item requires a minimumdonation of £4.50 or £8 for two items andare available from Dilys Designs.

You may have wondered at some pointin your life, or be questioning rightnow, if seeing a counsellor would behelpful to you. There are many reasonssomeone may look to therapy to helpthem; here is some information aboutwhat counselling and psychotherapyis about and what the purpose of thework is.

Individual work begins with a person’s exploration of theirrelationship to themselves. When self-awareness grows, so dothe options and opportunities for change; as we understand moreabout ourselves, we can make more informed decisions aboutwhat we want and how we are going to behave.

Relationships are continually reshaping as we progress throughlife. Life stages (birth, childhood, adolescence, young adult etc)and current circumstances put various pressures on us and ourconnections with others. Couples work aims to support people in

relationships to heal old woundsand create an environment ofcare and cooperation so thatissues can be resolved.

weddings

Four seasonsWhateverthe timeofyear, youwillwant yourweddingtobemagical. However, the season of your wedding can have a big impact on yourfood, photography and of course…dress! Here we’ve been catchingup with Petersfield’s wedding experts finding out how with a littleseasoning you can make your wedding sensational

This three tier cake with piped lace edgingadorned with roses and Lilly of the Valleywould be perfect for a spring wedding,Bellissimo Cakes.

Winter weddingsWhile not an obvious first choice, awinter wedding can actually be incrediblyromantic - especially if you go for aChristmas or Valentine date. However, toavoid hyperthermia correct clothing is amust! Don’t worry though this doesn’t meansacrificing your style. Michele Wheeler atElegance & Grace says, “Look glamorous andkeep warm by choosing satin based dresses, add long sleeves or marabou shrugs. “

The camera can also lie – with some cleverphotography. Photographer StephanieSwann recommends beating the chill bybringing cosy socks and boots, “the dresswill cover them or alternatively make thema feature!” But if you’d prefer to go for themore conventional option you can stillcreate beautiful winter shots by illuminatingyour day with a glow of candles, fairylightsor a roaring fire for atmospheric indoorportraits.

And, we all know in England rain is aprobability in most seasons, but it is of

course more likely in the winter months.Dilys from Dilys Designs therefore suggestsgetting your groomsmen to have some largegolf umbrellas at the church. “If the weatheris wet or windy, the guests, bride and bridalparty will be grateful of these as a potential’barricade’ against the elements.”

If the heavens decide to open it is alsoimportant to remember your footwear.Dilys says, “by placing a ‘freezer’ type bagcompletely over the shoes, and securing witha rubber band at the ankle.” This will avoidthe shoes being damaged as you get into thechurch – just remember to take the bags offwhen you get in!

When it comes to beauty, Makeup artistNicky Rattray says, “‘Don’t forget during thewinter you skin tends to be dryer, so startpreparing it a month in advance, exfoliatingregularly and using a good hydratingmoisturiser.” And for nails Leesa Bridson atthe Hidden Retreat suggests Shellac, “it is theperfect polish for the fingers and toes as itrequires zero drying time, so that means nodashing from the salon wearing flip flops!”

And for the cake…Helen Mansey at Belissimo Cakes says,“As well as white on white, ivory, metallics, icy blues and deep reds would all work fora winter wedding.”

Spring“Spring brings beautiful buds and blooms, the perfect accompaniment for dreamypictures,” says Stephanie Swann. “And springshowers are not to be dreaded as prettyparasol umbrellas can make wonderfulaccessories for images.”

But dress designer Katherine Cusack alwaysadvises to remember the importance ofcolour. “Dusty blacks and greys can lookdepressing in April.”

Temperatures can also be unpredictablein the spring months. Michele Wheelerrecommends dresses with illusion necklines, cap sleeves or capes to provide a bit ofcoverage.

For a rejuvenating spring treatment,Leesa says, “nothing beats a full bodyscrub treatment to shrug off dead skin cellsafter the winter. ESPA’s Salt & Oil Scrub is anexceptional skin softening body exfoliationwhich combines sea salts with essential oilsto leave your skin nourished, smooth andsupple.”

As well as the weather, it is important tokeep on top of the trends that are big on the

And for the cake…Helen Mansey at Belissimo Cakes says,“For the fresh feeling of spring why not optfor whites, yellows and lime greens for thatclean crisp look.”

SummerIt’s just as important to consider the weatherfor a summer wedding as it is in the winter.

“Umbrellas can be useful at a distance, toshield the brides’ face when looking intothe sun as photos are being taken,” Dilysexplains. “If it is a hot day, guests waitingoutside the church will also be grateful ofsome unexpected shade.”

Stephanie Swann continues, “If it’s bakinghot, an extra shirt for the Groom is a handyidea.”

Location can also affect your summerwedding outfit. Michele says, “If you aregetting married abroad try a lighter weightfloaty dress in silk, chiffon or organza. Youcan add finishing touches such as belts, brooches, or bling to personalise a dress.”However, if you are staying in the UK, find adress that flatters your body shape and thenco-ordinate to wedding theme. “Details suchas backward lace boleros to cover up for theceremony, add a lovely touch and then takeoff to make the most of the summer. “

To avoid summer tan / strap lines, Leesaproposes a St Tropez full body tan. This isperfect for creating a warm golden glowrather than tango!

And for the cake…Helen Mansey at Belissimo Cakes says,“In the height of summer flowers are in fullbloom, colours are vivid and bright so whynot take advantage of this and use brightbeautiful blooms to inspire the decorationon your cake.”

AutumnFinally for an autumn wedding Stephaniesays, “embrace the rich warm coloursautumn offers; be it your bouquet, tablecentrepieces, invitations and portraitbackdrops. Combine this alongside gustsof wind and dramatic skies for spectaculareffect.”

Similarly, when choosing your dressMichele suggests a dress in a softer shadesuch as champagne or cream which youcan then team with autumnal flowers tocomplement the look.

Like spring, autumn weather can beunpredictable hairspray is thereforeessential! “Different holds and brands givedifferent effects,” Tracey recommends,“Ellenet by L’Oreal, for soft natural hairdown styles or thick hair. Ellenet by L’Orealstrong hold is perfect for soft romantic up

gardening

Spring hasSpring hassprung

Spring has definitely sprung (on somedays at least!) and so even if you’d notdescribe yourself as a keen gardener, givegardening a go. There’s a lot to do, but alsoan awful lot to gain! Fun, fresh-air, feelingsof achievement...not to mention fantasticcrops of gorgeous fruit, veg and flowers!

Plant gladiolus corms now and they will beproducing their vibrant showy display laterthis year. Choose a sunny site with a well-drained soil for best results. If you have lotsof space you could even grow a few extra -just for using as cut flowers.

If the surface of your lawn is nowadequately dry you may like to try to give ita bit of a haircut. Make sure that the mower

blades are set high as the last thing youwant to do is scalp the lawn. If in doubt, wait a little longer as lawns have sufferedserious stress caused by all that snow andrain a few months ago.

To make even a rather rough looking lawnslook instantly better, use a pair of edgingshears to neaten up the ledges. Stand on aplank or board as you do the edging so thatyou reduce the risk of any compaction ordamage to the edge itself.

As herbaceous perennials start to becomeavailable in garden centres and nurseries,it is worth keeping an eye out for yourfavourite varieties and at the same timetake a look at your own existing plants tosee whether they would benefit from beingdivided.

Start chitting (sprouting) potatoes byplacing them with the blunt end of eachtuber uppermost in a seed tray or old eggbox. Position these trays in a cool, but frost-free spot. Chitted seed potatoes will tendto produce a slightly heavier and slightlyearlier crop.

Make sure that you rake up fallen leavesfrom beneath your rose plants. They maylook quite innocent but these may well beharbouring over-wintering fungal diseases

such as black spot, so they need to be wellout of the way before the new leaves break.

Provided the soil is not too cold and wet, make more sowings of colourful annualsdirect in to the soil in a sunny part of thegarden. Try candytuft, godetia, love-in-a-mist and stardust or cornflowers. Lookout for seed packets marked ‘HA’ or ‘HardyAnnual.’

Keep deadheading spring flowering bulbssuch as daffodils. If these faded flowerheads are removed promptly it will preventvaluable reserves being wasted as the plantforms seed heads, instead energy can besent straight down to the bulbs so that theyflower well again next year.

As we enter the newseason, gardeningexpert, PippaGreenwood lets usknow what we shouldbe doing in ourgardens this spring

Visit Pippa’s websitewww.pippagreenwood.com and signup for ‘Grow Your Own with PippaGreenwood’ – choose from a fantasticselection of vegetables, sent to you atjust the right time for planting ANDeach week you get an email from hertelling you all you need to know toensure great results – from just £29 forup to 66 garden-ready plants!

King Edward’s School now has a new life-saving defibrillator, thanks to joint fundingfrom the British Heart Foundation and theschool’s Medical Centre.

The new piece of equipment will allowstaff to perform vital emergency first aidin cases where a person has suffered fromcardiac arrest. It is fully portable, so can berushed out to where it is needed, whetherthat is on a sports field or in a classroom.

The funding was awarded following anapplication to the British Heart Foundationby the School’s Medical Centre Sister, Marie

Quinlivan and Development Director, JoFinnie-Jones. Sister Quinlivan explainedthat the School’s rural location combinedwith the sheer number of pupils, staff andguests that use King Edward’s facilitiesthroughout the year made this money wellspent.

“It’s obviously something that we hope tonever have to use, but 12 staff, six from theMedical Centre, have been fully trained incase it is ever required.”

petersfield history

However, many people don’t know thatthe Petersfield Heath is also home to aremarkable prehistoric barrow cemetery -one of the most impressive and diverse inSouth-East England.

Despite their significance, the barrows haveonly once been the subject of a formal survey. This occurred in 1930 by Stuart Piggott, whenthe then student at Churchers College, Stuartproduced a plan of their locations. Thisremains the only archaeological work to havebeen carried out on the barrows.

This could soon change however asPetersfield Museum have applied to theHeritage Lottery Fund for a grant to carryout a major four-year project centred on theHeath. The Petersfield Museum hope this willput the rich archaeology of the Heath morefirmly into the consciousness of the local andwider communities, including those involvedin its management. It will also create a newand exciting educational resource and anenhanced attraction within the new SouthDowns National Park.

Petersfield Museum Curator, Kathrin Pierenexplains, “Due to the Heath’s key role in thelife of the town, public involvement will becentral to the project. This will be achievedthrough both the active participation of local

people and the publicizing of results.”Life in Petersfield was lucky enough to have

a personal tour of the Heath with a retiredArchaeologist who has just revived thePetersfield Archaeological Group, Peter Price.Walking around the Heath, Peter explainedhow there were 21 known barrows withinthe Heath, dating between 2200 and 1500BCas well as many barrows that are no longervisible due to development, erosion andscrub growth.

In addition to the barrows, Peter alsoshowed us an actual piece of flint he hadfound on the Heath that could have beenused as a knife or cutting blade.

As well as involvement with the barrowsproject, Peter is keen to attract new membersto the Petersfield Archaeological Group, “Youwill never look at the ground in the same wayagain after coming to one of our meetings. We’ve got lots of exciting digs and projectscoming up to help us discover more aboutour area’s history.”

If the bid is successful, two professional andexperienced archaeologists, to be appointedby Petersfield Museum, and a group ofvolunteers, will lead fieldwork and research. The research agenda will build on the mostup-to- date academic debates on burial,

ceremony and settlement in later prehistory. The archaeologists in conjunction with

Petersfield Museum staff will carry out theengagement with the wider public andschools. The project will seek constantconsultation with a range of otherinterested organisations, all of whom will berepresented on an advisory committee.

Work could then potentially begin in April2013 and run until the spring of 2017.

Fieldwork will take place during the firstthree years, involving two excavationsper year, geophysical and topographicalsurveys, and palaeo-environmentalsampling. There will also be visits to otherkey sites and museums in the region. Anextensive programme of guided tours, school activities and talks will run over thecourse of the project, and tours are plannedto continue after its completion. The finalyear will focus on analyzing the findings anddrawing conclusions and will culminate in aconference and a book.

year I joined the RYA South Zone Squad andin 2011 I was selected for the RYA NationalIntermediate Junior Squad. In September2012 joined the Topper National Squad of just24 sailors from all over the UK.”

Since then William has gone on to becomeone of the top three junior Topper sailorsin England, an achievement William isparticularly proud of.

“The competition in the Topper Class ispretty high and I had to sail in a number ofNational indicator events in 2012, includingthe National Championships (against about270 other sailors).”

As one of the top three junior Toppersailors in England, William now faces hisnext challenge at the Home NationsChampionships, where he will berepresenting his country.

“Some of the RYA’s top coaches will be therewatching us on the water and giving advicebetween races. There will be the top threemale and female Topper sailors and LaserRadial sailors from England, Scotland Irelandand Wales. We will compete in teams to try tobring home the cup!”

To prepare for his sailing challenges Williamfollows a strict training schedule, sailingalmost every weekend somewhere in thecountry, either at his home club, HaylingIsland Sailing Club, or with his fellow squadsailors in the National Junior Squad. “Wehave residential camps throughout thewinter and spring. I also have a rowingmachine at home and use this to improve mycardiovascular fitness, arm and leg strength

and core stability.”Diet is an equally important part of

William’s preparation so the RYA squadalways offer nutrition support to ensurethat William and his fellow sailors have theappropriate fuel.

“I always eat pasta just before going onthe water and then I take plenty of snacksand drinks afloat as we can be on the waterwithout coming ashore for up to six hours.”

However, despite his intense training,William is always sure to prioritise hisschoolwork. “Mum and dad have been verystrict about me getting homework doneduring the week, before I am allowed to gosailing at weekends. Occasionally I need timeoff school and my headmaster Mr SimonWilliams at Churcher’s College has been veryaccommodating when I need the occasionalday off to travel to an event.”

To take him to the next stage of his sailingcareer at the end of this year William hopesto ‘transition’ into his next boat. “I havemy eye on an RYA Pathway boat called the‘International 420’. This is a double handedboat with a symmetric spinnaker and atrapeze, it is one of the most technical sailingdinghys’ around and leads on to a ‘470’ whichis currently an Olympic class boat.”

To get the boat William will be lookingfor additional sponsorship.

“I can be contacted [email protected] and can offeradvertising on my sails and my boat in returnfor help to fund my next campaign.”

Riding the waveWe are all guilty of moaning about not havingenough time – especially when it comes tofitness activities! However, despite being just14 years old, Petersfield Sailor and Churcher’sCollege student William Birch-Tomlinsonhas already achieved a long list of bothregional and national sailing titles, as well asa sponsorship with major retailer Crew. Herewe caught up with the sailor to find out justhow he fits it all in.

William first got into sailing on a familyholiday in Aberdyfi in North Wales whenhis mum Jane introduced him to the sport.William went on to complete severalcourses at the Portsmouth Outdoor Centreincluding RYA levels 1 to 4 and a StartRacing course.

“It was an instructor at the centre thatsuggested to my mum that I should beencouraged to race as I seemed to doparticularly well on the course. Within a

Simpler tax for thesmaller business?

The Chancellor is to proceed with proposals tomake the tax system simpler for the smallunincorporated business with an optional“simplified cash basis”. The scheme will not beavailable to general partnerships.

Where a business has a turnover up to the VATlimit (currently £77,000) it will be able tocalculate its profits on the simplified cashbasis rather than the full accruals accountingbasis. In addition it will not have to distinguishbetween revenue and capital expenditure. Thismeans that capital expenditure on assetacquisitions will generally be deductible whenpaid – with certain exceptions for items suchas cars and premises.

On the up side, businesses will be able toclaim a range of expenses on a flat rate basisrather than having to identify actual amountsspent but, on the down side, any losses willhave to be carried forward and set againstfuture profits rather than offset against otherincome.

If you think this may be of interest to you andwould like some further information pleaseget in touch!
