Estrella volunteers Continue to Impressby Eric Holmgren, Club & Program Manager

Dear Volunteers: CCMC, Newland Communities and the entire community of Estrella

would like to thank you for your recent contributions of time, energy, and enthusiastic support to The Moving

Wall™. This event would not have been a success without your involvement.

Volunteers are worth their weight in gold, and their willingness to share their time and talents without any compensation speaks volumes. Unless you have been in hiding, you know that Estrella just hosted The Moving Wall™ from October 2nd – October 6th. When this project first came about, weknew we would need to utilize the residents of Estrella as volunteers to make this event a success. After devising a daily schedule of what our needs would be, a volunteer website for the event was created through Volunteer Spot, and with 267 individualopportunities, fillingthem all would not be an easy task. The residents of Estrella along with the entire community were quick to show their support for this momentous event and we quickly saw the spots begin to fill.Whenthe event kicked off on October 2nd, all volunteer opportunities hadbeenfilled.

The phenomenal success of The Moving Wall™ event isa reflectionof theever increasingdedicationandenthusiasm Estrella volunteers display on a continual basis.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt “Thank You!” We look forward to working with you again for future events.

Fall in EstrellaBy Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.

The fall season is one of my favorite times of the year. The mornings are cool and

crisp and the landscape is green with winter turf and late summer flowers. Estrella has many activities planned for outdoors in the coming weeks, so be sure to take advantage of the great weather and enjoy your wonderful community.

If you are a vegetable gardener, now is a great time to plant some of the vegetables – lettuce, cabbage and carrots to name a few – that grow well over the winter months here in the desert. Many garden centers and plant nurseries have seeds and some may have plants already growing in small containers to help you get started. Take the time to prep your planting area with lots of organic composted materials. A garden is a great activity for the whole family.

Adjust you watering for the cooler weather. Plants are starting to wind down and they do not require as much water as they did during the hot months. Take advantage of any rains we receive by turning off your controllers until the soil dries out.

Keep in mind that frosty nights may be right around the corner. If you have frost sensitive plants be sure to locate your frost cloths and have them handy.

Enjoy the fall season!

thanksgiving pecan squares Yield: 20 large squares Level: Easy

IngredIents

Crust:

1 1/4 pounds unsalted butter, room temperature

3/4 cup granulated sugar

3 extra-large eggs

3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

Topping:

1 pound unsalted butter

1 cup good honey

3 cups light brown sugar, packed

1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

1 teaspoon grated orange zest

1/4 cup heavy cream

2 pounds pecans, coarsely chopped

dIrectIons

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

For the crust, beat the butter and granulated sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, until light, approximately 3 minutes. Add the eggs and the vanilla and mix well. Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix the dry ingredients into the batter with the mixer on low speed until just combined. Press the dough evenly into an ungreased 18 by 12 by 1-inch baking sheet, making an edge around the outside. It will be very sticky; sprinkle the dough and your hands lightly with flour. Bake for 15 minutes, until the crust is set but not browned. Allow to cool.

For the topping, combine the butter, honey, brown sugar, and zests in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan. Cook over low heat until the butter is melted, using a wooden spoon to stir. Raise the heat and boil for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat. Stir in the heavy cream and pecans. Pour over the crust, try-ing not to get the filling between the crust and the pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the filling is set. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until cold. Cut into bars and serve.

This story is set in Spain during the 16th century and present day. Menina Walker was a child of fortune. Rescued after a hurricane in South

America, doomed to a life of poverty with a swallow medal as her only legacy, the orphaned toddler was adopted by an American family and taken to a new life.

Menina Walker, at 19, finds her life in shambles. Adespicable incident causes her to call off her wedding, andshefindsherselfaloneanddepressed.Herbestfriend arranges a trip to Spain for her to get away, and Menina takes with her the only links to her birth family: an ancient book and a medal from the convent from which her parents adopted her. A mugging strands Menina in a musty, isolated Spanish convent.

Exploring her surroundings, she discovers the epic sagas offiveorphangirlswhowerehidden from the Spanish Inquisition and received help escaping to the New World.

Each girl and woman’s story was recorded in the Convent’s chronicle to bear witness of the cruelty and inhumanity they suffered. The Chronicle helped bind the sisterhood across generations. Both love story and historical thriller, The Sisterhood is an emotionally charged ride across continents and centuries.

We welcome you to come and join us in this discussion. The Estrella Book Club will meet November, 12th 10:00 a.m. at The Starpointe Residents Club.

Estrella business Group Goes to Goodyear>>> clubs & Groups

By Estrella Business Group

Did you know that there is an Innovation Hub within the City of Goodyear? The purpose is to provide a place where entrepreneurs can

meet and collaborate with other people, network, expandtheirideasorreceiveone-on-onementoring.The Innovation Hub, located in the new Goodyear library, is the result of an amazing partnership between the City of Goodyear, ASU Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group, and the Maricopa County Library District.

On September 9th, 15 members of the Estrella Business Group attended an off-site meeting with members of the City of Goodyear Economic Development team to discover more about resources available to business and our community. Business Groupattendeeshadanopportunitytohaveafirsthandlook at the business resources available at the new library, as well as learn about economic development in our city and tour the Telecommunications Center that houses the 911 facilities.

EConoMiC dEvELoPMEnTHere are the highlights of discussion and personal library tour with the Economic Development team that focused on what is being done to help both large and small businesses succeed in the City of Goodyear:

• A new website is being created to promote local businesses

• Workshops are available to help local businesses grow

• Work is being done to set the stage for a promising picture of anticipated future growth of Goodyear

innovaTion HUBThe Innovation Hub offers business programs, public PC access to the library database, a meeting room available for reservation, and access to city resources. (Check out their website for workshop and other information at www.goodyearaz.gov/smallbusiness.)

During the discussion many questions were asked about the latest in Goodyear including the Estrella Falls Mall. Carolyn Nicodemus of EYE LOVE MY LASHES & SKIN CARE stated that for her, “the highlight was realizing how the City of Goodyear has such a knowledgeable and proactive Economic

Development Team to help grow our businesses.” For many reasons Nicodemus reported, “the Estrella Falls Mall is still on hold, unfortunately, for the time being.”

911 & TELECoMMUniCaTionS CEnTErThe Telecommunications Center was another part of the tour. This is the area where 911 operations are centralized. Everyone on the tour was very impressed with the sophisticated facilities, professional staff as well as the long-term planning that went into ensuring a lot of space to grow as the city grows.

CiTy oF GoodyEar BUSinESS SUMMiT 2014 was held on October 28th. Members of the Estrella Business Group attended the summit geared toward the partnership between the City, its business and resources available to help all of us grow. As the Life in Estrella readership knows, the Estrella community recently had the honor of hosting The Moving Wall™ honoring Vietnam

Veterans. For two artists at Estrella Foothills High School, the event afforded them a special opportunity.

Kali Canedo and Ashley Smith were asked, under the direction of EFHS Art Teacher Darleen Deal, to design pieces of interactive art work that would allow visitors to the Wall to pay their respects to the Veterans who so honorably have served our country. The two pieces were done in black and white, set on the backdrop of rays similar to those found on the Arizona flag honoring our local heroes who served.

On the piece designed by Kali, a unique emblem bringing in elements from the emblems used to represent the four military branches were combined to honor the service that each branch gave during the War. On the piece designed by Ashley, a similar representation of each branch was found in the uniforms worn by the silhouettes of men and women – being inclusive that our American Veterans come

from a variety of backgrounds. In the rays, words that represent the service given were painted: dedication, perseverance, honor, sacrifice, nobility, bravery, etc. Space was left on the rays for visitors to the event to write their words of appreciation.

Kali described the design process as somewhat daunting, noting that they wanted to make sure that they paid respect in a proper manner through their artwork. She stated, speaking on behalf of herself and Ashley, “We were honored that we could contribute. It was moving to be there and see all the names on the wall, and then see people interacting with our pieces.” Ashley stated that they were pleased with the number of people who chose to add their notes of appreciation to the pieces and she was very proud to be able to use her artwork in such a manner.

*Kali Canedo and Ashley Smith did have assistance with the painting from two other students, Monica Conidi and Kathryn Anderson.

Calling all Sunny D drinkers!Help Estrella Mountain Elementary Collect Labels for the Sunny d Book Spree

Do you or your children drink Sunny D? If so, we need your help. EMES is participating in the Sunny D Book Spree. For every 20 Sunny D labels, one of our classrooms receives 20 free books. This promotion ends in November, so we only have a few more weeks. Here’s how you can help: Take the labels off your Sunny D bottles and drop them off at the school’s

office or take them to the Chase bank right here in Estrella. Just tell them the labels are for our school and they will place them in our Box Tops collection bin. Remember, they have a drive through. Our goal is to provide every classroom with a set of free books. Thank you so much for your help!

CITY

Last month, I had the honor of speaking at the closing ceremony of The Moving

Wall™ – dedicated to those killed or listed as missing in action during the Vietnam War. Newland

Communities sponsored The Moving Wall™ coming to Goodyear, and as a city supportive of the military, we’re grateful they brought the Michigan-based touring memorial for our residents to see.

The six-foot-tall-by-252-foot-long monumentcontains more than 58,000 names of those killed, and 1,300 listed as missing in action or prisoners of war from that turbulent time. It was designed to honor the 2.7 million men and women who served in the U.S. military in Vietnam, and is a replica of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Moving Wall™ provides the opportunity for those to visit it who may not make the trip to our nation’s Capitol to see the original.

Seeing The Moving Wall™ was a moving experience in itself.Volunteers read aloud all of the names on the wall – a task that took66hours.

It was touching to see people of all ages from the entire region converge on our community to see the wall or hear the names of those they may have known or fought alongside. Some of the visitors shed tears; others placed flowersat the foot of the wall in honor of thosewhosacrificedall.

It’s hard to believe that nearly 40 years ago, the United States ended its involvement in the Vietnam War.

Goodyear was a much different place during the Vietnam War. In 1970, at the height of the war, the city’s population was just 2,140, compared to more than 73,000 today. Everyone pretty much knew everybody and young men who

graduated from our nearby high schools in the 1960s and early 1970s were drafted into the military. Their well being weighed heavily on this town’s mind.

As The Moving Wall™moves on to other communities and we approach another Veterans Day, let us remember the number of names and their families who made great sacrifices as a reminder of theimportance of thanking our military and retired service members for their service.

THE CITY OF GOODYEAR FILL-A-NEED PROGRAM:families with generous gifts and donations made available by City of Goodyear employees, residents and local businesses.

Estrella residents are invited to participate in the program by donating items such as new unwrapped toys, clothing and school supplies for children 17 and under, as well as holiday gift wrapping supplies or by making monetary contributions to the program (used for gift purchases). Items can be dropped off at the Estrella Information Center or Starpointe Residents Club now through December 5.

The program also needs volunteers to wrap and deliver presents during mid-December. Last year about 30 volunteers put in more than 250 hours for Fill-A-Need. For the 2013 Christmas season, the City of Goodyear was able to assist 21 families, which included 100 children.

For more information on how to get involved, please call Lisa Neagle at 623-882-7081 or visit http://www.goodyearaz.gov/residents/fill-a-need-program.

Estrella residents are always among the first to answer the call when there is a need. The program works to brighten the holidays for families who have suffered loss of employment, injury or illness, abandonment or loss of loved ones. The program connects these
