The Estrella Community Association (ECA) will elect two residents to the Board of

Directors. The election will occur in September with results announced at the Annual Meeting, scheduled for September 23, so please SAVE THE DATE. The Nominating Committee

is seeking residents who wish to serve on the Board.

If you drafted a blueprint for the perfect community association board member, they would have the perfect mix of personality, motivation and skill.

personality traits: Respectful, patient, a terrific listener, thick-skinned and humble. Board members who give others respect and expect it in return have meetings with results that are civil, productive and on point. The role of a board member is to care for those entrusted to you in the community. The best board members are good listeners.

motivation: One crucial part of a board member’s effectiveness is altruistic motivation. Volunteers who get on a board without an agenda (they want to keep assessments low, they want to change the pool rules, they got a fine, etc.) are more productive because they want compromise and debate instead of argument. It also helps to have board members motivated by their fiduciary duty to the community. The best board members understand they are there to look after the community, not just their own interests.

skill: Board members who bring specific skills from their work worlds can be a boon to a board. The ideal board comprises a mix of management styles, professional skill and temperament.

Serving as a volunteer board member is not to be taken lightly. On the other hand, it can be a very rewarding and educational

experience. Everyone who feels capable of committing the time and effort to the good of the whole association should take a turn in serving on a board.

A professional board member takes the job seriously, studies the issues, develops an informed opinion, communicates effectively and works unselfishly for the common good of the association.

So how do associations get more of the ideal qualities in their board members? Make an effort to reach out directly to people others think would be good leaders. After all, they are your neighbors!

If you or someone you know would be interested in becoming an Estrella Community Association candidate, please complete the application online at www.lifeinestrella.com in the Document Library section or stop by the Community Services Office or Starpointe.

Community patrol for Estrella

You may not see us, but we are patrolling the community. My name is Eddie Abeyta, the

Community Patrol Lead and my co-workers are Doug Bradwin and Shelby Boydston. We work seven days a week.

Typically, we help to keep residents in compliance with HOA regulations, as well as routinely monitoring the common areas—especially the parks.

We want to make sure residents and/or visitors are respectful of the property in the common areas and also ensure orderly conduct. As we patrol the building grounds, we report vandalism, burned out lights and/or other matters requiring attention to the Facilities Director. Additionally, we respond to residents’ calls, record parking waivers when the Community Services Office is closed, assist emergency vehicles to correct locations and provide traffic control as needed/requested by authorities, as we work in conjunction with the Goodyear Police Department.

community patrol to the rescue! In an effort to help the residents through the dog days of summer, we have acquired a portable charger to jump start vehicles, along with a mini air compressor to aid in filling flat tires. If you have a concern that should be addressed after the Estrella Community Services Office closes, contact your Community Patrol staff at 602-329-0462. If you feel it is a true emergency, please call 911.

It is truly a pleasure to work and interact with the residents of Estrella!

Estrella Economy and Investment Group; There is Something for EveryoneBy Kevin Jordan

C ome join the group! It’s a low stress open forum where we

discuss the things that are happening in the world that have

a direct effect on your money. After all, money matters &

Investing is no Picnic, truer words have never been spoken. Did you

know that less than 5% of those at retirement age have enough to

retire or that 90% of the wealth in this country is held by fewer than

4% of the people?

The stock market, real estate, risk or no risk; who knew it would be

this hard? If you don’t understand the world of investing you’re not

alone. Our group is designed to take some of the mystery out, to

inform people of what’s affecting their money every day. The days

of “buy and hold” or blindly contributing to a 401K is over. You can

no longer be disinterested in how money works or turn it over to a

“professional” to manage for you. Truth is: “If you don’t care about

your money no one else will”!

We all face the same unknown future. Will my home value continue

to rise or is there another bubble looming? Am I invested in the right

areas for growth? Will I be able to afford to send my kids to college

and how do I save for retirement?

It’s time to get off your duff and COME JOIN THE GROUP. You

can be an EXPERT or a NOVICE, 18 or 80, all you must have is

an interest in how to better plan for your financial future. We’ll

have guest speakers in from time to time, so mark down the first

Tuesday (starting Oct 8th) of each month from 7:00pm to 8:00pm at

Starpointe. Call Kevin Jordan for more information: 623-528-8885.

Why pick up the poop?By Paula Redmon, Communications Committee Member

Besides being a nuisance, uncollected dog waste is a serious problem for Estrella residents. Next time you’re tempted to leave

your pooch’s droppings on the lawn or gravel please remember these facts:

1. The Environmental Protection Agency is becoming aggressive about enforcing the Clean Water Act. Our association could be fined if dog waste goes uncollected.

2. Uncollected dog waste may lead to a special assessment. If fined by the EPA, the association could face a potential special assessment that would be levied against all members—not just dog owners.

3. The appearance and quality of the common areas are known to affect home sales—not just whether and for how much they sell, but how quickly.

4. Uncollected dog waste spreads disease and attracts rodents who feed on pet waste. We love our wild life, but not so close.

5. The weather is getting hotter in Arizona and we are spending more time outside enjoying outdoor events at our beautiful lakes, parks and play areas. Watching where our pets poop (and scooping the poop) will help keep Estrella a clean community and a wonderful place for our friends and families to enjoy all year long.

If you have not already noticed, take a drive to the Star Tower about 9:00pm. Get ready to experience something magical as you see all of the lights. While you are there, take a walk up to the top and

read the inscriptions along the way.

The maintenance team had a goal to clean up the maintenance yards and shop of debris that’s been accumulating over the years.  After the clean-up was completed, CCMC staff contacted a local vendor who recycles miscellaneous material. The proceeds from the recycling enabled the Yacht Club to purchase a safety boat to assist or rescue an individual that may be stranded, or in a compromised situation while on the water.

The boat is a Wave Tender 9.4 with an electric trolling motor. It’s lightweight and low to the water, but very stable due to its tri hull bow. The design of this boat will allow ease of retrieving an individual from the water, should the situation arise.

We are committed to providing a safe environment for the Estrella residents, and the purchase of this watercraft will assist with safety while on the water.

StarSplash Waterpark: Beat the Heat!By Eric Holmgren, Club & Program Manager, and Mary Ann Brungardt, Starpointe Front Desk Lead

It’s that time of year again, so grab your bathing suits and head on over to Starpointe! Opening day for the StarSplash WaterPark is slated for May

24th, with the anticipated closing date of September 2nd.

As it is every year, this becomes a very busy time at the Starpointe Residents Club. In an effort to ease the process and make your visit more enjoyable, there are a few things that you as residents can do in preparation for your arrival at the club.

If you have not updated your resident cards to our new activenet system, please see the HOA office to do so prior to the start of the WaterPark season. Please remember all children living in the household must be on the account, and children age 10 and over should have their own ID to scan in when using Estrella amenities. A manual look up will be required for children under the age of 10.

Please read over the complete list of rules and regulations for entry to Starpointe (starting on page 59 http://www.lifeinestrella.com/images/c u s t o m e r s / 4 6 1 5 8 3 / d o c s / C O M M U N I T Y _HANDBOOK_-WORKING%20COPY%207-2013.PDF) and for use of the StarSplash WaterPark in the Community Handbook. Please discuss the rules and regulations with any family members or guests who will be using the pool.

Any residents who plan on bringing guests should obtain the appropriate forms at the Starpointe entry desk or online at www.lifeinestrella.com prior to the WaterPark season. Extended Stay Guest Pass Forms

can be obtained by clicking http://www.lifeinestrella.com/images/customers/461583/docs/EXTENDEDSTAYGUESTPASSAPPLICATIONTUTORIAL-2014A-V3.PDF. For faster service, have these forms filled out and dropped off at Starpointe prior to your guests arriving.

Waterpark rules are as FolloWs:

• Anyone under age 14 must be accompanied by someone age 16 or older.

• As a preventative measure, children who are not potty trained must wear two swim diapers in the WaterPark. An outer reusable swim diaper and an inner disposable swim diaper must be worn.

• Proper attire (meaning ‘cover-ups and shoes’) must be worn upon entering the Club and while in the Club at all times.

• Appropriate swim attire must be worn at all times while at the WaterPark.

• Basic noodles are the only pool toy allowed at the WaterPark.

• Coolers are permitted, although subject to inspection. If asked, all coolers should be easy to access by all Starpointe Front Desk staff.

• Alcoholic beverages and glass containers are not permitted.

• Light snacks (no commercial food) and beverages are permitted at the pool area only. All food and beverage-related trash must be disposed of properly.

Estrella’s Top-Notch Schools Submitted by Newland Communities

We are proud to offer our residents outstanding options for K-12

education with three top-notch schools located right inside the community, offering students a stimulating challenge close to home. Between Westar and Estrella Mountain Elementary Schools and Estrella Foothills High School, there is never a shortage of good news to share. Below are just a few of the exciting things happening in Estrella’s schools.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) has officially authorized Estrella Mountain Elementary School for the Middle Years Program (MYP). As an IB World School, Estrella Mountain is part of a global community of schools committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people and a curriculum designed to help them be ready to negotiate their futures successfully. The MYP program encourages students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement - essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders. We commend the school’s educators, administrators, students and families for their active roles in securing the IB MYP distinction and look forward to adding the Primary Years Program (PYP) in the near future.

Estrella Foothills High School has been making news lately for its winning Robotics Club. The team recently won the First Tech Robotics Challenge Inspire Award and title of overall Arizona/New Mexico State Champions. The team moved on to the Western Super Regional Competition where they placed 6th and qualified to compete in the World Championship tournament against 23 countries. Comprised of 16 students, the Robotics Club spent time after school and during breaks meeting with engineers

from Lockheed Martin and designing and building robots. The competition robot can maneuver through the arena, pick up two-inch blocks and place them into a basket 26 inches above the floor and lift itself completely off the ground to hang on a pull-up bar. The robot can even raise its own victory flag.

Westar Elementary will host its STEM Camp this summer on June 2 – 6 to support its curriculum focus of science, technology, engineering and math. The camp is not limited to Westar students and is open to all children, kindergarten through 5th grade, who live in the Estrella Community. Camp lessons will focus on life sciences, earth science, chemistry and energy centered labs. Games and labs are designed to teach and reinforce STEM principles as well as team building skills. Contact Mr. Paduano for more information: [email protected].

These are just a few examples of the many exceptional students, events and news happening at our neighborhood schools. One of the top reasons families choose the Estrella community as home is because of the outstanding programs offered in our schools. To learn more visit the “Schools” page on Estrella.com.

What to do Before the Hot Weather Sets InBy Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.

Before the hot weather sets in there are a few things that need to be done around the

landscape. Adjust your irrigation controller to provide enough water to your plants. With the higher temperatures additional water may be necessary.

The turf should be starting to green up. If you over-seeded your Bermuda grass, make sure you lower your mowing height for a few weeks to help choke out the rye and allow the Bermuda to have additional sunlight to grow. Apply a balanced fertilizer to feed it and break its dormancy. We recommend scheduling fertilizations about every six to eight weeks for a healthy green lawn.

Now is a good time to inspect your trees and adjust or remove unnecessary staking for your mature trees. Our desert trees should be just about completed with their blooming so plan on trimming your desert trees before the seedpods set and after they complete blooming. You will want to remove any weak branches or those that are touching each other; also any crossing branches should be removed. The goal is to reduce the crown of the tree by thinning it out and allowing the wind to pass through with less obstructions. This will help in the upcoming monsoon season when we may encounter heavy winds. If your

trees are too large for you to trim, consult with a tree service. Please make sure that the company you choose to trim your trees has a certified arborist on staff.

May is a great time to install additional plants or trees in your landscape. This will give the plant enough time to acclimate to its new surroundings and be rooted for the summer heat. Select plants for areas that have enough room for the plant to grow in so that it will not need constant attention to keep clear of sidewalks or the house. Remember to envision the mature height and width of the plant before you select the area to install it.

Enjoy the spring!

Residential fires kill around 3,000 Americans each year, but they don’t need to. Most deaths can be prevented if homeowners follow some

basic fire prevention tips. Here are some basic fire safety suggestions to help ensure your household is as prepared as possible in the event of fire strikes.

use your nogginResidential fires often happen purely because homeowners are careless when it comes to common fire prevention tips. Never smoke in bed, for example. Doing so is just asking for trouble. Also, place space heaters at least three feet away from any flammable surface, including walls, since they are another major source of house fires. And finally, don’t overload electrical sockets. There’s a reason that outlets are manufactured with only two plug-ins per unit. Overloading a circuit with extension cords and “octopus” outlets can easily lead to a fire.

educate children aBout Fire dangerStatistics have shown that more than 100,000 fires are set every year by children under five years old playing with matches or lighters. Sit down and talk to your kids about the dangers of playing with fire, and about the potentially lethal consequences of doing so.

Be prepared Test the smoke alarms in your home every month

and replace batteries at least twice a year. Make and practice an escape plan. Teach everyone two ways out of every room in your home. Clear away things that are blocking the exits from rooms.

Home fire safety is a vital part of protecting members of your household from the devastating effects of a fire. By following a few simple fire prevention tips, you can rest easy knowing you and yours are as prepared as possible if the worst should happen to you.

Our Estrella Fire Department is here to PROTECT, SERVE, PREVENT and EDUCATE. There are four (4) crewmembers per shift. Each shift has two (2) paramedics. There are “NO BURN DAYS” in Maricopa County. The No Burn Days apply to Estrella Residents. The dates are posted on the Maricopa County website and also announced on the daily news broadcast. The No Burn Days depend on the weather. On those dates you may not burn trash or leaves. You must apply for a permit to burn any yard trimmings or trash on your property, otherwise you may be subject to a fine of up to $10,000 per violation per day; depending on the violation and the substance and the intensity.

Thank you to our Goodyear Fire Department for sharing this vital information for the Estrella community and for their unselfish service. Estrella, let’s have a safe and fire-free season.

You may ask, “What happens after the HOA and Newland have approved the trail?” Typically, a team of two or three folks marks the general

layout of the trail with colored landscaping flags. (If you happen to see some of these flags out in our community, you can gaze down the trail path and know that these flags usually mark the “downhill” side of the trail.) The team looks for interesting features that people might find intriguing. We also use hand-held “Slope-Meters” and smart-phone “Elevation/Camber Apps” to analyze the topography on which the trail is going to be built. Some things we consider are the soil type (sandy, rocky, high-clay content), the steepness of the hillside, and surface features (deep washes, huge boulders, cacti, and trees) that must be taken into account. This step is very important because a poorly designed trail creates erosion problems. We encourage everyone to stay on designated trails so as not to inadvertently create an ugly water-erosion scar.

Our ‘Secret Trail Installation Tools’ are not Bobcat tractors, John Deere backhoes or Quads pulling steel drags. Once the flags are in, trail crew volunteers hike in their tools, such as pick axes, sledgehammers, steel and leaf rakes, shovels, buckets and pry bars. Yep, it’s just a bunch of guys and gals out playing in the dirt with dust in our teeth, blisters on our palms and stiffness in our backs. The fun begins with the pick axes and steel rakes and is tough work, since our soil is pretty rocky.

If the trail is on a slope greater than what you would feel comfortable traversing on foot, then we have to cut “tread” to level the trail surface. This requires cutting the upper side of the trail on the hill with pick axes, and transferring that soil/rock mix to the slope

below the trail with a steel rake. The steeper the slope the trail crosses, the more dirt and rocks we have to move in order to make the trail almost level. If a big rock is buried in the ground we might use a sledgehammer to remove some of the rock that is above the ground, or even use a pry bar to remove the rock entirely. The above process of making the trail flatter is called “cutting bench,” hence the trail is a “bench cut” trail. Once we have removed the fist size rocks, we then use leaf rakes to get out smaller rocks while trying to keep as much soil on the trail as possible. This leaves a nice surface on which to walk or ride.

When the trail is in steeper terrain and in a confined area, you will see the trail reverse on itself, which is called a “climbing turn” or a “switchback.” These turns are used to help keep the steepness of the slope more manageable for hikers and bikers while ensuring that water runs off and not down the trail. This labor intensive effort allows the trail to be more safely traveled by trail-users.

What takes only minutes to hike or ride, can take weeks to build. Several members of the Trails Committee and Trail Crew have been through Trail School and we are careful to build and maintain trails that are enjoyable and sustainable. Sure, it takes a lot of work to build a trail, but your Estrella Trails Committee takes seriously our responsibility to provide our community with a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. It would be hard to find a community with a better trail system. We are always looking for volunteers, even if it is helping us carry some shovels or rakes. If you are interested, please contact us by going to www.lifeinestrella.com and click on “Committees,” then “Trails.” See you on the trails!

Wednesday, may 14th - the rosie projectBy Graeme Simsion. Don Tillman, professor of genetics, has never been on a second date. He is a man who can count all his friends on the fingers of one hand and whose lifelong difficulty with social rituals has convinced him that he is not wired for romance. When an acquaintance informs him that he would make a ‘wonderful’ husband his whole world changes. This is a story one is unlikely to forget.

Wednesday, june 11th - death at la FeniceBy Donna Leon. This is the first mystery based on the Italian detective Guido Brunetti. Called a “stunning procedural series” in a New York Times book review, this novel shows us the underside of Venice. Though murder is central, the book is nonetheless human and humane. The novel opens on a high note where an opera is being performed at the Teatro La Fenice. The journey from there is riveting.

Wednesday, july 9th - Five smooth stonesBy Ann Fairbairn. This gripping bestseller, first published in 1966, has continued to captivate readers with its wide-ranging yet intimate portrait of an America sundered by racial conflict. David Champlin is a black man, born into poverty in Depression-era New Orleans, who makes his way up the ladder of success, only to sacrifice everything to lead his people in civil rights.

CITY

I am proud to report that more than 2,000 students from 12 schools in Goodyear have

been cracking the books this past month in a fun way in hopes of becoming tops in their class. But

for those who competed in the city of Goodyear’s 2nd Annual Reading Challenge, they’re all winners in the end and have become better readers for it.

The Reading Challenge is an effort to improve literacy and create a fun and competitive learning environment while we hope to build on the program’s success last year. The challenge pits classes in kindergarten through the eighth grade against one another to see who could read the most pages in the four week span. The contest ended on April 27 and the results are being tallied. Stay tuned.

Last year, the 2013 Reading Challenge was the first education-related initiative hosted by the city since joining the Read-On Arizona literacy partnership early last year. Read-On Arizona is a statewide organization committed to creating an effective continuum of services to improve language and literacy outcomes for Arizona’s children.

The genesis of the Reading Challenge came out of Goodyear City Councilmember Joanne Osborne’s “Building Blocks to Great Schools” –a partnership that aims to bring city officials and school administrators together to develop policies and practices that enhance the quality of education for Goodyear students.

By instilling a love for reading in our students and helping them improve their literacy, we hope to better prepare our children for their future and increase their chances for success later on in life.

The public, private and charter schools from around Goodyear competing in this year’s Reading

Challenge are: Copper Trails Elementary, Desert Star Elementary, Desert Thunder Elementary, Eliseo C. Felix Elementary, Estrella Mountain Elementary, Mable Padgett Elementary, The Odyssey Preparatory Academy, Palm Valley Elementary, Westar Elementary, West Valley Christian School, Western Sky Middle School and Wildflower Elementary. This year, students in kindergarten through second grade also are competing in the Reading Challenge for the first time.

During last year’s inaugural challenge, about 2,300 students combined to read about 800,000 pages. This year, the sixth through eighth grade winners will receive two tickets each to an Arizona Diamondbacks game and the kindergarten through fifth grade winners will be rewarded with an ice cream party. Congratulations to all of those who competed in the event, and rose to the challenge!

Scam Alert!By Lisa Kutis, PIO, City of Goodyear Police Department

>>>policE BEAt

The Goodyear Police Department advises the citizens of Goodyear to

guard themselves against door-to-door  solicitor scams. Police have received complaints that unknown subjects have been going door-to-door, falsely representing various organizations in order to collect money.

In one specific incident, Goodyear PD was advised of a subject apparently  going door-to-door falsely identifying himself as a member of the Army Reserves, asking for donations. He may have been dressed in military uniform and/or carrying a military ID.

The Goodyear Police Department warns residents that the Army Reserves never solicit donations door-to-door. If you are approached, be warned…this is a scam!  In addition, for your protection, know the

organization to whom you are giving a donation, and whether or not they in fact solicit door-to-door, as many charities do not.

In general, practice safety when answering your door. Goodyear Police recommend not opening the door to strangers. For your safety, keep doors and windows

locked. When not at home, create an environment that looks and sounds as if someone were at home. Examples include: turn on lights inside the home and use outdoor lighting at night. If gone for an extended period of time, arrange for mail and newspaper to be stopped or picked up for you. Put lights and TV/radio on a timer to create noise inside the home.

And as always, if you see suspicious activity, report it to the Police Department immediately.

YOUR DESERT OASISMany residents will say the 72 acres of lakes are what solidified their decision to move into the Estrella™ community, and certainly the enhanced lifestyle provided by North and South Lake sets the community apart from other developments here in the Arizona desert. One of Estrella’s top amenities is the Yacht Club, where approximately 200 residents a week take advantage of boating opportunities. In fact, Terry Hammond – the new manager of the Yacht Club, says it’s the reason he made Estrella his full-time home.

Open Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Yacht Club offers residents free boat rentals and residents are encouraged to take advantage of this unique community amenity. The current boat inventory includes: 16 kayaks (both double and single seats), four canoes, four stand up paddle boards, two standard sailboats, two racing sailboats and four pedal boats. Free sailing and boating safety classes are held the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. In addition to boating equipment, the Yacht Club also provides fishing poles for catch and release fishing. Regularly stocked with bass, bluegill, tilapia and more – residents can drop a line and enjoy a day on the lake, just be sure to bring your own bait. For more information call 623-386-3411.

COMMUNITY NEWS Residents know that Estrella is always buzzing with events, new businesses opening, new homes being built and outstanding resident news. Just a few noteworthy headlines are below.

• The City of Goodyear’s quarterly “Coffee With A Cop” will be hosted at Oasis Bagels on May 20. Head over from 8 - 10 a.m. to meet with officers, share ideas, ask questions and learn how to keep your family and home safe. Oasis will graciously be serving free coffee during the event.

• The much anticipated new neighborhoods are now open – Golf Canyon by T.W. Lewis By David Weekley Homes and Golf Ridge by William Ryan Homes. Be sure to stop by to see the beautiful new models – six in all…you might even pick up some great design tips for your own home.

• CantaMia’s new model home village is now open featuring nine brand new model homes, including five new floor plans and four of the original best sellers. The community now offers 25 floor plans, nine of which are new and complement the existing sixteen. Stop by for a quick tour to see all the great things happening.

• The Goodyear Lakeside Music Fest was a resounding success with more than 4,000 music lovers stopping by the Estrella Lakeside Amphitheater to enjoy a variety of live bands, artistic presentations and beautiful lake and mountain views.
