When I was going to send this at Christmas,

it was several months, now it’s just under a

year. Think of it as a very, very late

Christmas present. This past several months

since my last newsletter has been anything

but quiet. I was able to have six weeks

back in Australia during October and

November. I spent 10 days in Brisbane and

celebrated a welcome home (belated

birthday) with my

brother, Kerry, and the Broomfield

clan. It was fun and a great

blessing. I had two weeks in

Melbourne doing OMS stuff and

telling them about Thailand, then

about two weeks of hanging

around Brisbane, getting a

motorbike license and catching up

with family and friends and

churches.

Then came “home” to a whirl wind of busy-ness, our foundation has been

growing a lot and we are influencing the Chiang Mai provincial officials in very

positive ways. My awesome team have been just amazing in getting work

reports translated, visa letter requests and visa extensions processed as well as

many new and renewing work permits, fun times,

well not really.

The fun times started with the Abundant Life

Festival the second day I was back in Chiang

Mai, then weeks of catch up before the Christmas

season got in full swing. Christmas Parties here,

there and everywhere.

I was part of the organising team and

participated in the King’s Birthday parade and

celebrations for all foreigners to thank the King of

Thailand. It was great to be part of the COC

family up until Christmas, I have really enjoyed the

change across to the new foundation with all its

benefits and challenges.

Season’s Greetings From Life in a Northern Town

My name is Shayne Rochfort and I am a servant of God, volunteering in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

I am the Legal Advisor at Christian Outreach Centre Thailand (COC) and helping coordinate visas and

work permits and the whole work in local churches and communities all over Thailand.

My main role involves everything and anything, STILL.

Ok, to finish off my Christmas newsletter, I will update you with my Christmas story 2014 and New

Years - sorry! I decided after we finished working for the year that I would head down to Mae Sot for

my Christmas. So I packed up some stuff and headed to the bus station for my fastest trip down to

Mae Sot ever, it was awesome! The normal 6 hours was made 5, and since then I can understand

why the road from Tak to Mae Sot is one of the most dangerous in all of Thailand’s dangerous roads.

Approximately 100 people have died on this road since Christmas.

Back to the story… I wanted a little time away and this was a good chance. I had been given some

money from my aunt and that was able to cover all my expenses for my trip, praise God.

I spent Christmas eve, just relaxing and getting into the feel of Mae Sot. It is a different sort of place,

one that is challenging to Thailand because of it’s position, it’s a border town and feels a bit like the

wild west. But it’s fun and I love it.

Christmas morning, I woke up and it felt like just another day. I posted to Facebook my feelings, then

gave my family a Skype call, and decided to get out of my room and try and make things in this

Buddhist/Muslim town a bit of Christmas and Jesus. I put on my Santa hat and went looking in town

for something that I could do, I found a shop and I bought some jellies and lollies and thought I

could go around and give them out to the children I found in the markets.

I had a big bag of these and I went seeking little ones (and big ones) to give a smile and a little gift

whilst just blessing them with a simple “Merry Christmas”.

I walked around for about an hour and was running out, I wasn’t finished, so I hit the shop again and

doubled my load and headed out again, going deeper into the

back streets and alleyways to find all the kids I could. Lots of

smiles were received and the Christmas spirit was awoken. My

Christmas Dinner was a special time with our COC Pastor and his

family, so there was some western style rejoicing and amazing

food and desserts. We watched a nice Christmas movie and I

got some take home treats also, so a pretty good Christmas day

happened in 2013.

The rest of the week was pretty normal and I headed back to

Chiang Mai for New Year’s eve at my boss’s house. Well that was

also pretty uneventful until… my boss happens to be a licensed

demolitions and bomb expert, among other things, and his

excitement for his New Year’s fireworks spectacular was unparalleled. He had been preparing all

day. The church family brought all the treats and that was scrumptious, and we were perched all

around the giant campfire getting ready for the big display.

Wow, it was pretty special, UNTIL, one of the boxes of fireworks somehow failed or moved as a

firework left the container and delivered the final 3-5 fireworks into the scattering crowd. When it was

over and everyone was found unscathed, we prayed and the usual hugs and New Year’s blessings

were shared throughout the group. Overall, an exciting end to an interesting and challenging year.
