if it Moves or Breathes – they WiLL tax it! All governments, particularly socialist ones, are addicted to raising taxes. GTS, ETS, water, electricity, waste, stamp duty – if it moves or breathes, they’ll tax it.

These “we’ll spend your money more wisely” philosophies are often established under the guise of “community benefits” – that is, “if we make it expensive enough, they’ll be forced to use less of the product we’re focusing upon, thereby protecting the environment. We’ll collect more money, but we’re only doing it for the community.”

What if?What if there were incentives for doing the right thing, rather than punishing those who don’t?

Instead of introducing a carbon emissions tax, then refunding those who can’t afford it, and subsidising industries to withstand the inevitable overseas competition caused by pricing its businesses out of the market, why doesn’t the Government provide incentives?

No business would suffer, indeed, those who reduced emissions would receive a competitive advantage – a better outcome for all (except the Government relying on the extra revenue to finance programs that may increase their popularity.)

Communities everywhere are suffering, yet we’re told to

tighten our belts while governments devise new ways to extract more cash from us.

In Queensland we’ve seen the privatisation of energy companies, supposedly to provide the competition to ensure prices stayed down. However, the opposite occurred, with last year’s 13% rise set to be even larger in 2011/12, while the State Government reaps a fortune from their shareholdings and does nothing to control the prices. Then the State withdrew their 8% subsidy for Queensland petrol prices, taking even more from our pockets for their Treasury.

Worse of all was Premier Beattie, who realised the value of taking over water. It would always be free; was a necessity of life, so everybody needed to buy it, whatever the price; and price-rise pain could be so widely spread householders would barely notice the initial increases.

This success got the State searching for other services to tax, and they found waste removal. Councils collect it, purchased landfill sites, built the transfer stations, and are already finding ways to lower charges by encouraging recycling. But the Government can smell the money they’d receive if councils collected cash for them through an ‘environmental levy’.

What’s next? Abu Dhabi imposes a charge to use beaches, and the Gold Coast has the world’s best beaches – so watch out! The Little Shop of Horrors that is the George Street Treasury is constantly looking for more reach for their tentacles.

ruGBy heaven Reaching out the hand of friendship We all watched in horror in February as Christchurch was devastated by the most destructive earthquake in a generation. It shocked the international community and it will take years for the physical and psychological scars to heal.

But this weekend, the Gold Coast reaches out the hand of friendship in competition to our New Zealand friends with a huge weekend of sport that will honour the courage and spirit of disaster affected communities.

This Friday, the Australian and New Zealand rugby league teams will face each other in the first Test between these two great rivals ever played on the Gold Coast. Then on Sunday, the Trans Tasman rivalry continues when the Titans and Warriors clash. Originally Christchurch was scheduled to host the Test, but had to withdraw following the devastating earthquake.

Our government quickly stepped in to bring the game to the Gold Coast and for good reason – it keeps the Test on track and keeps New Zealand in the game.

For the Gold Coast it means thousands of interstate and overseas visitors, and once again demonstrates that Queensland is back in business.

The people of both nations have endured tragedy and they

will be honoured in a series of special events and promotions associated with this blockbuster weekend. Former NRL stars, including Kiwi international Nathan Cayless, will conduct a community visit in Christchurch on Thursday before joining fans on the flight to the Gold Coast.

Jetstar, the New Zealand Rugby League, Australian Rugby League and the Titans will bring 250 fans from Christchurch to both games free of charge. The ARL and NRL are also inviting 250 Queenslanders from flood-affected regions to be special guests at the Test. And on Monday, Titans and Warriors players will visit flood affected areas of Ipswich and Goodna.

I hope this series of events will bring a little cheer and relief to those who’ve been through an incredibly tough few months. We can proud to be a part of these fantastic events.

More amazing rugby news for the Coast…In other great sporting news for the Gold Coast, the Australian Rugby Union has announced the Coast will become the new home for the Australian leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series for the next four years – a major coup for Queensland.

Rugby Sevens is also a core Commonwealth Games sport, so this is a great chance for us to demonstrate to the Commonwealth Games delegates that we can, and will, deliver a world-class Games in 2018.

We need More Casinos, hoteLs and fun parks!

It is great to hear that Easter trading was good for the Gold Coast. It has been a tough time and positive news tends to bring out the best in everyone.

The debate about injecting long term life into our economy is an interesting one. Steven Ciobo thinks more casinos and Tom Tate thinks breast enhancements, whilst our Council just doesn’t think!

Perhaps Steven and Tom are both right. Over the past couple of years I have visited Las Vegas and Macau for business and with my family. Most people associate low-life behaviour with casinos and gambling, but you won’t find that in either Las Vegas or Macau. There are far more intoxicated people in Surfers Paradise than at either of these gambling Meccas, primarily due to their very strict rules and laws – if you do the wrong thing, you get locked up.

I think we need to look at the past to inject life into the future by remembering what put the Gold Coast on the map: fun, sun and parties. The Gold Coast boomed in the 70’s and 80’s, through the years of Joh Bjelke-Petersen’s corrupt government. Be that as it may, things got done, buildings got approved

and development went ahead in leaps and bounds. But now,

we must do things ‘right’. We must be green, sensitive to the

endangered frog or plant. Of course, this stops development,

or at least makes it so difficult that nobody will take a risk.

Then we bash the people that do try and then wonder why we

are not moving forward.

Why do so many people want to develop the Gold Coast into

a mature city? We have enough already. What we need is

to go back to the 80’s and develop more casinos, more fun

parks, more hotels, improve development and offer a range

of different fun and exciting attractions for both families and

singles. Instead, Gold Coast Tourism and Queensland Tourism

spend millions on bad advertising and marketing campaigns.

What they should do is subsidise packages to bring tourists

from all over Australia, and China, Japan, etc. After all, this

is our biggest industry – next to local Government of course!

Let’s go back to the life of fun, sun and partying.

P.S. Congratulations to Cindy and Andrew on your new look

Life Gold Coast. I wish you all the best and hope the people of

the Gold Coast embrace your passion for the future direction

of Life.

Life GoLd Coast WeLCoMes CaMpBeLL neWMan to the opinions paGe Welcome to my first column in the new look Life Gold Coast Magazine. Most people know me as the former Lord Mayor of Brisbane, but I’m also married to Lisa and we have two girls. I am originally a civil engineer and had a 13-year career as an Australian Army Engineer.

I’ve also worked as a management consultant, including working at the Moura Coal Mine, and for leading Queensland agribusiness, Grainco Australia for six years, where I was responsible for the operations of the entire company.

I then ran for Lord Mayor of Brisbane and served that community for seven years. I couldn’t sit back and watch our great state continue its downward spiral, brought about by the mismanagement of a tired State Labor Government that has been in power for 20 of the last 22 years, so I nominated to run for the state LNP Leadership.

Once upon a time, Queensland was debt free. Now we’re heading towards a debt of $79.5 billion in two years, and the state’s budget is only $40 billion. Recently, independent agency, Commsec, rated Queensland last behind all other states. Behind Tasmania! Behind South Australia!

Queensland is currently scrambling to fill an infrastructure gap brought on by years of neglect, in the midst of a health crisis, and the Bligh Government is refusing to write off the cost of its failed water grid to reduce the burden on water bills because it can’t afford it.

I understand the myriad of issues that affect communities across Queensland, and we should not continue to cop the State government throwing taxpayers’ money at problems, rather than forward-planning for the future.

What Queensland needs is strong, sensible leadership and that’s what I’m offering. I look forward to talking to you about my team’s plans for our state in future columns.

your BudGet is aBout to Be BatteredWhether it’s every week, fortnight or month, most families sit down and plan a budget.

It’s a tough juggling act, with fuel, food, mortgage repayments/rent and various other bills – electricity, water, phone, and the Internet – all to pay. Not to mention paying off the credit card and using what ever is left to treat the family to some fun.

Unfortunately, that fine balancing act is about to become a lot more tricky when Treasurer Wayne Swan hands down the Gillard Government’s Budget on May 10.

In the lead-up, Swan and Julia Gillard have been telling everyone it’s going to be a ‘tough budget.’ That’s political speak for cuts to government programs, funding and services.

The Gillard Government already has 14 local private schools in their sights. They have refused to guarantee their funding won’t be cut when they introduce a new funding model which means school fees are likely to rise.

Also on the chopping block is the Benevolent Society’s Saver Plus programme which has provided vulnerable Gold Coast families with financial management skills to plan for their futures. No doubt there’ll be many more along these lines.

The reason why this budget will inflict pain on Gold Coasters is because Labor has wasted money, hand over fist. Billions have been blown on failed programs such as pink batts, cash for clunkers, grocery watch, and the school hall rip-offs.

The reality is Labor is now being tough with Australians because it hasn’t been able to be tough on itself.

Labor has ticked the nation’s net debt up to $79, 581 billion! That’s $4.381 billion in interest payments a year, which could be used to fund four major new hospitals.Julia Gillard has said: “You can’t run this country if you can’t manage the budget.” She’s right.

A world record attempt, marine seminars, lunches for the ladies and VIP packages are some of the plans announced for the 2011 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Sanctuary Cove General Manager Events and Marketing, Sue Thomson, has confirmed a range of initiatives for the 23rd annual Show planned for Thursday, May 19 to Sunday, May 22 at Sanctuary Cove.

“For the first time, Sanctuary Cove welcomes Marine Queensland as host to a daily schedule of fishing and marine talks and seminars,” she said.

Industry and angling experts will present talks and educational sessions on topics encompassing fishing, boat maintenance, trailer boat operation and wider issues in the marine sector. These will be staged at the Marine Village Theatre and in a second venue within the waterfront Marine Village.

In another first, Queensland Surf Lifesaver, Andrew Abrahams, will attempt to break the World Record of one million metres in a rowing machine over five and a half days. His efforts will support the Starlight Foundation, a children’s charity. The Show appearance is a lead-up to his December 2011 marathon attempt to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, a distance of some 2700nm (5000km).

“We are confirming exciting new displays and world launches virtually daily for the Show,” said Ms Thomson.

As in past years, visitor tickets can be purchased online. Online ticket prices are $22 one day adult; $19 one day concession; $40 two-day adult and $75 four-day adult. Children 14 years and under have free entry.

Visit www.sanctuarycoveboatshow.com.au for full terms and detailed information.

After nine years serving the Gold Coast community, and with new publishers, Cindy Page and Andrew Keeley, it was high time for Life Gold Coast magazine to undergo an ‘extreme make-over’ with a whole new look, expanded content, and more of everything you love, like our What’s On guide, reader give-aways and social pages.

It’s not every day that a magazine changes it’s actual masthead, but like the new look inside, the beautiful new Life logo and front cover style signals new times, new opportunities for our readers and advertisers, and a re-energised publication for our dynamic community.

You may not know that Life Gold Coast is distributed to roughly 200,000 residents via email (150,000) and directly into letterboxes (58,000) from Tweed Heads to Beenleigh.

Thank you to our loyal and new readers for nine amazing years.

And cheers to a new look, new team and new start for Life!

John neaves – voLunteer at CarefLiGhtAfter he was airlifted by RACQ CareFlight in 2008, Gold Coast local John Neaves was inspired to give back to the service that helped him in his hour of need.

Airlifted from Springbrook National Park, John said his experience as a patient opened his eyes to the benefits of the service, and he decided to become a volunteer.

“Being a former patient, I volunteer with CareFlight because I feel it’s a way of giving back and I know I’m helping a good cause,” he said. “I’ve been volunteering for about two years now. I travel around and collect all the CareFlight donation tins and count them up.”

John was enjoying one of his passions, bushwalking, when he suffered an allergic reaction and subsequent fainting spells. His walking group was in a location which couldn’t be accessed by ambulance, so the RACQ CareFlight helicopter was called in.

John was airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital for treatment and made a full recovery. He is still an avid bush walker, but also counts volunteering for CareFlight as one of his favourite hobbies.

Ladies, revealing your inner Goddess is simple – all you need to do is to channel the look that was all the rage in ancient Greece or Rome, just as actress Jaimie Alexander has in her amazing gown at the world premiere of Thor. or, if you’re Sofia Vegara from Modern Family, anything red and screaming ‘silver screen siren’ will do! Either way, just add some inexpensive, but bold accessories featuring gold and large gems, like these lovelies from Lovisa. Before you know it, that inner Goddess of yours will be calling the shots and anyone, including those with super human powers, will be at your mercy!

SECRET 1: Your nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system in your body...especially your Immune System.Ron Pero, head of cancer research at the University of Lund, Sweden and Chief of Cancer Research at New York Preventive Research Centre says that restoration and correction of the spine can increase the strength of your immune system by 200% - 400%!!Your spinal cord “links” your brain to the rest of your body, and makes everything work as a ‘System’. Why should you care?Webster’s Dictionary: “Health is a condition of wholeness in which all of the organs of the body are functioning 100% all of the time.” Well, what if something disrupts this “vital link”? Do you think you’d have some problems? Maybe some asthma, ear infections or sinus troubles? Maybe pain, tingling or numbness?Consider this - The “guardians” of your spinal cord are THE VERTEBRAE!Your vertebrae protect your spine from damage or harm and also allow you to twist, turn, bend, and move around without much restriction. But, sometimes these “guardians” get knocked out of place. For example: The birthing process...falling while learning how to walk...poor posture…lifting…twisting, car accidents, playing contact sports, driving for long periods of time, etc.

SECRET 2: Posture is the window to the spine! The first step to eliminating your pain is a thorough examination by someone who really knows what to look for! We want to know things like what falls you suffered as a child, what sports you may have played, what you do for a living, and so on. This “vital information” will usually give us the secret clues and answers to some of your health problems. The next thing is, of course, a through chiropractic examination. But this is unlike any “traditional” examination. This is a very specific Chiropractic examination. We look carefully at your posture with digital photography and take very specific spinal X-rays to allow us to look inside of you to see how well aligned you are. What are we looking for? You guessed it:A DYSFUNCTIONAL NERVOUS SYSTEM! AND WE CAN FIND OUT EVERYTHING WE NEED TO KNOW IN JUST 15 – 20 MINUTES!We’ll tell you if we find any subluxations (misaligned

vertebrae) and how it’s affecting your overall health and well being! (It’s quite amazing. Your body will show us visible signs of why you’ve been in pain or sick.)

SECRET 3: The secret of Nutrition:In today’s world the quantity of food required to feed the masses has altered the soil. The once mineral rich, vitamin rich soil has been depleted. Just eating the right foods is not that easy for a lot of people. We’ll teach you about the age old secrets of power nutrients to give you maximum energy, decreased stress, and a stronger immune system at our free half hour health workshops. Call to receive your complimentary tickets.

SECRET #4: Once we find the “problem” We’ll tell you HOW TO FIX IT!Once we find out which vertebrae are out of place (A subluxation) we can correct them and gently restore them to normal alignment. Even more importantly, we will provide a tailored program of unique exercises so that the spine remains in its healthy position.

SECRET #5: The power of the “ADJUSTMENT”!Remember we talked about ALIGNMENT? Remember how we said that if you’re not properly aligned, your immune system, your brain - your entire body functions at less than 100%? Well, the magic of putting the vertebrae back into alignment so we can reconnect 100% of the normal exchange of information from the brain to the rest of the body so you have optimum function is called an ADJUSTMENT. This little-known (and virtually ignored) treatment flat out WORKS better than anything else I’ve ever studied. And I’ve seen it work on thousands of people with all types of pain and health problems. I use techniques - all PROVEN scientifically to work and all 100% “natural” that help return vertebrae back to where they belong. And, the most amazing part is:THIS WHOLE PROCESS DOESN’T HURT ONE BIT!

SECRET #6: Consistency is the key! How many times have you ignored your pain and symptoms?...Or allowed your pain to get covered up with drugs? If medicine was able to get us healthy, nobody would ever get sick!• Create a better sense of wellness• Begin a program that will attack the cause of

your pain, while relieving your symptons• Start saving money by ending over-thecounter

drugs that don’t work and have side effects of their own

• End the cycle of temporary relief and start a lifetime of better health today I see a surprisingly wide variety of health problems, including, but not limited too:

• Headaches, Migraines• Pain, tingling, and weakness• Neck Pain• Burning into the extremities• Colic, Asthma and ear infections• Arthritic problems• Low Back Pain• Athletic problems• Sciatica• Digestion problems

Our goal is to make your family’s experience with us as pleasurable and informative as possible.

Yours for better health,

When it comes to pigmentation, there is no one ‘quick fix’, however our tailored treatments plans deliver real results:

Dark spots, uneven skin tone, melasma, freckles, sun damage, age spots and liver spots could be a thing of the past.

everyBody’s doinG itBy deB farnWorth-Wood

Fixing pigmentationStare at the faces of young children and babies and you will notice that one of the signs of a youthful face is the absence of pigmentation. All you see is clear skin, even texture and tone.

Uneven pigmentation makes a face look older and comes in a variety of forms. The most common is freckles caused through sun exposure – looks cute when you are a kid, but unfortunately these can increases in depth, spot size, colour and actually can develop into roughened patches in time.

Other skin conditions such as Melasma can be hormone related, caused through trauma (such as a burn) and is also made worse by sun exposure. ‘Liver spots’ or solar keratoses can be darker spots with a roughened surface and need to be checked by a doctor before treatment as there is a small risk that these can become skin cancers.

Treatment of pigmentation is not straight forward and depending on the cause, severity and the heritage/colour of your skin, there are a variety of treatments and techniques that may be required. Darker skins are trickier to treat, and need careful management by skilled aestheticians. Very often, combined treatments are required; first we treat the stronger pigmentation and then the lighter areas. Treatments may include prescription de-pigmenting products, specialist peels, IPL and laser.

Once your treatment is complete, prevention of new pigmentation will require the use of 30+SPF every day. Products like Skinstitut Even Blend Serum will help prevent the production of pigmentation if used daily as part of your skin care regime.

If you are one of the lucky few that have avoided pigmentation so far, then you probably have avoided prolonged sun exposure too, but look out for incidental sun exposure while driving (notice how car drivers often have a darker right side of their neck) and sitting outside enjoying a latte with the girls. Consider Skinstitut Even Blend Serum as a supplement to your skincare products.

Last year we revealed that Tess Alexander was the inaugural winner of the ‘Face of Coast’ model search, organised by our sister magazine, Coast Lifestyle. One of Tess’ many wonderful prizes, along with a sensational necklace from JWG

Jewellers, was a trip to Japan. Before she had even left the Coast, Tess has several modeling assignments lined up. It appears the Japanese were just as amazed at her rich red hair and translucent skin (not a freckle in sight) as the judges were during the gala FOC ceremony at Chevron Renaissance.

We are thrilled to report that Tess is back home, and modeling on a regular basis for Tamblyn Models. Here is just one of the beautiful photos that resulted from her time in Japan, which Tess says was “Simply amazing!”.

If you would like to enter the Face of Coast competition, simply grab the May/June issue of Coast Lifestyle magazine and complete the form and send in your pics to the email address listed. Perhaps we will be featuring you in an upcoming issue of Life Gold Coast and Coast Lifestyle!

the cold is on its way, and for many of us this means keeping our body well under wraps hiding under jeans, jackets and scarves for the

next few months. No doubt your skin will start to look a little dull and lacklustre, and in desperate need of attention. Here are some great winter beauty tips to help you survive winter:

daIlY WaRm lemon dRInk on RIsInGThis remedy is a sure-fire method of energising your body. It will detox your entire system, assisting to rid the body of toxins which can affect the quality of your bad skin.

IncRease WateR consumptIonDuring the colder months we tend to reduce our water intake and replace it with comforting hot drinks like coffee, tea and hot chocolate. But it is just as important to maintain our water intake as each day our bodies lose approximately 2 litres of water. Drinking 1 to 2 litres of water a day will help keep your skin healthy and glowing as a hydrated body means your skin won’t dry out.

exFolIatIonIf body exfoliation is not already apart of your beauty regime, then it is time for an overhaul. By removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, you enable cell renewal, stimulation of blood circulation to increase oxygen and nutrients to the skin, and also the release of toxins from the body, all of which result in your skin looking and feeling much healthier. Exfoliation also allows for better absorption of body moisturisers and lotions into the skin making the application of these products more effective. Exfoliating 1-2 times a week will be highly beneficially in keeping your skin looking radiant and glowing with health.

moIstuRIseDuring winter, our skin naturally produces less oil making us more prone to dry, flaky skin. Moisturisers are our first line of defence in combating dry skin as our cells are in great need of moisture and they easily absorb hydrating creams or lotions. Start on the right foot by booking in for a facial such as The Golden Door’s Blue Lagoon, or other hydrating facials that specifically target dehydration; your skin will love you for it!

IntensIVe haIR tReatmentDry scalp, dandruff, and split ends are common hair and scalp problems in the winter months. Daily blow drying and hot irons will further dry your hair, so a weekly or fortnightly protein/moisture hair treatment during the winter months will help combat that dry and frizzy hair we all dread.

lIp tReatment Your lips are one of the first signs of dehydration so it is important to keep them well hydrated using a good lip balm daily. Your lips don’t have oil glands to keep them moist like your skin so it is important to apply this regularly. Try to avoid products with synthetic ingredients as this will dry the lips even further. Exfoliating lips twice a week with a muslin style cloth is also great to encourage cell renewal.

With these handy tips, while everyone else is trudging around grey and dried out, you will look fresh as a daisy.

your Money

Life Gold Coast Magazine caught up with the very dynamic Naomi Grundy, managing director of myBlitz, and founder of an exciting and very different rewards card concept, that

unlike other cards, actually pays you to spend…immediately!

WheRe dId the GReat Idea FoR mYblItz come FRom?I was tired of carrying around stacks of rewards cards that most of the time I forgot to use, or worse yet, used and never received any value from them. So the myBlitz team and I developed a rewards card concept that was easy to use, did not involve having to ‘redeem’ points and most importantly, gave the card holder instant rewards. Everyone’s biggest complaint about almost every rewards card is having to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, before you can earn or redeem their rewards.

Behind the SceneS at

The Gold Coast’s own Rewards Card Company

Of course, as we sat down and really brainstormed, the myBlitz concept became this super charged, rewards card on steroids, which works like cash – only better!

hoW does the caRd WoRk lIke cash?Imagine if your groceries bought you a massage every month. Or your daily coffee gave you a free muffin. This is exactly what happens when our members use their myBlitz reward card. Everyone loves instant gratification, and that’s actually what you get with this card.

It’s also helpful if you think of the myBlitz card as three cards in one – an everyday expense card, EFTPOS card and reward card that then results in real dollars in your account when you use it at participating partners. Of course, more partners are coming on board every month, and as this grows, your opportunities to spend and earn grow too.

FoRGet about VoucheRs!Gone are the days of feeling sheepish about handing over a voucher you laboriously cut out and then being told it’s invalid, or watching them clutter up your fridge week after week. Because the card works like an EFTPOS card, you simply swipe your card and enjoy the benefits. No confusion, no embarrassment – ever!

WheRe can I use mY mYblItz caRd?The myBlitz card can be used anywhere that EFTPOS is accepted, however the benefits to you and your family come from using the card at one of our participating partner stores. Currently our participating partners include: Coffee Lovers, VIP Coffee, Crystique, Madame Et Monsieur, Abrakiddazzle, Affordable Doors, Fuel Bar & Restaurant, The Kitchen @ Mermaid Beach Tavern, DIVAS for Men & Women Day Spa Hair & Beauty, Burleigh Brewing Co, Marie’s Pizza, Baskin Robbins Sorrento, Zushi Sushi, Nail Affair and GC Compound.

I loVe the concept, hoW do I sIGn up and What WIll It cost?If you think it’s time you stopped spending and started ‘blitzing’, log on to www.myblitz.com.au and start spoiling yourself today. As we say, Don’t buy it…Blitz it!TM and for a once off registration fee of only $29.95, and secondary cards for family members of just $9.95 each, if you sign up today you can start receiving and redeeming rewards.

the MyBLitz speed readers Guide:

3 you get paid to spend

3 Great for kids and teens too

3 it works like a normal eftpos card that can be used anywhere

3 use it at a participating myBlitz partners and earn instant reward dollars back onto your card

3 there are no vouchers to cut out and take with you – no arguments about whether vouchers are accepted or not

3 no need to lug dozens of different reward cards around – simply pay with your myBlitz card and cash is credited into your account

3 We support Gold Coast businesses

doGGY dInInG: this one Wasn’t on the MenuBy MiChaeL WoodCoCk, vet, the vet LounGe

Here’s an interesting case I had in recently.

My patient was a 7 month old Doberman pup who was brought into the vet surgery because of a vomiting problem. At the initial examination he was bright and happy, not sore in the stomach and had a normal temperature. He was given an injection to stop the vomiting, but to our surprise, this did not slow the vomiting. Like any pup, he was still keen when his food was prepared, but when it was put in front of him, he wouldn’t eat it. Very odd behaviour in such a young, otherwise healthy puppy.

We decided to take an x-ray of his abdomen and the picture shows what we saw:

I found myself staring at a clearly foreign object that appeared to be about 10-12cm long and made of a metallic type of fibre. Of course, the only choice was to operate. So we anaesthetized the pup and opened up his abdomen. When we reached into the intestine there were sharp pieces of metal pricking through – no wonder he was vomiting and couldn’t eat. Three incisions later we had removed a very smelly piece of steel wool from his intestines!

Chatting to his owner later, she realized that he must have grabbed the steel wool from inside a BBQ cupboard outside. As it had been used on the BBQ recently, it probably smelled pretty yummy to the young one. How he managed to actually swallow it down, though, is anyone’s guess.

I removed his stitches during the week and I am glad to report that our young puppy is now eating well, fully recovered and the BBQ cupboard is now locked!

Dear Animal Welfare League,

I have an older dog, but I plan to adopt a puppy from the AWL in the coming weeks. Can you share some handy tips to successfully introduce my new pup to my older, lazy dog?

Thanks for your help,

Luke

Dear Luke,

Congratulations on your decision to adopt a dog! We have so many beautiful animals at the AWL who need loving owners and a new home. The beauty of dogs is the amazing way that they adapt to any new environment or schedule. With some simple planning you can introduce your new puppy to your older dog with ease.

Here’s what we recommend:1. Before your new dog comes into your house, pick up all the toys, bowls and beds that belong to your older dog. This will alleviate the need for the dogs to work out a problem before they have gotten to know one another.

2. Allow your new dog to become familiar with the house on his own before you allow both dogs to meet. Let the new dog sniff and explore his new surroundings. You will know your new

3. Arrange to introduce the dogs to one another on neutral territory, even if you have introduced them at our shelter previously. Take them for a walk together and praise the dogs for being friendly.

4. Walk the dogs around the front yard together and then enter the house once they are friendly and not sniffing each other anymore.

5. Do not leave the dogs alone together for a day or two. Crate one if need be. Observe their interactions, watch for erect body postures, stiffening and overt aggression. If you don’t observe any of this behaviour, you may gradually add items such as toys and beds back into the environment.

6. Support the dominant dog when there is a disagreement. If a young dog is harassing an older dog, and the older dog snaps at the younger one, this is fair and the older dog should not be scolded. Make sure that they both have their own toys, beds and bowls and be sure to feed the dogs separately to avoid arguments.

THE TRAIn In SpAIn and other Great Rail Journeys!

there was a time in the distant past when an upcoming rail journey met with antici-pation and excitement by adults as well as children. That joy and exhilaration can still be found on board many luxury trains travelling over steel rails in virtually every country in the world. Guests travel through spectacular scenery in private

suites, dine in lavish restaurants and exchange stories with other travellers as they are carried from city to city, country to country in total opulence. Now is the time to re-live that era as the luxury trains are back on track and again providing memories that will last a lifetime.

euRopeFor those wanting to explore what is known as ‘Green Spain’, the El Transcantábrico travels across the coastline of Northern Spain in seven days. This stunning journey passes through Bilbao, Santander, Oviedo, Vivero and other Spanish gems, while the traveller relaxes to take in the lush green meadows and craggy mountain views. The Danube Express provides another option winding its way from Brussels to Istanbul, and passing through the cities of Prague, Vienna and Budapest amongst others.

Bagpipes can be heard as you board The Royal Scotsman in Edinburgh and join just 36 guests on an adventure through the Scottish Highlands. Indulging yourself in Scottish hospitality onboard you’ll enjoy sipping finest malts and true highland cuisine. The ultimate European Rail journey is the famous Orient Express. This opulent journey travels through Europe featuring Venice, Paris, Istanbul, Budapest and Prague whilst experiencing the very best in French cuisine and enjoying cocktails around the grand piano.

IndIaOne of the legacies of the British Empire is India’s considerable rail network dating back to 1851, and which now boasts over 55,000 km of rail tracks crisscrossing the country. The Deccan Odyssey will carry you around West India calling at Goa, Pune, Sindhudurg and Ganpatiphule in seven nights. The Palace on Wheels will transport you through Rajasthan from Delhi with journeys ranging from seven to 10 days, taking in such sights as the Taj Mahal, Jaipur and Jodhpur. If Southern India is your preference, The Golden Chariot will take you from Bangalore or Goa through the state of Karnataka

aFRIcaThe Pride of Africa calls at Cape Town, Pretoria, Durban and George. The extravagant carriages boast the largest suites on any train, some with their own full Victorian bath and private lounge area. The Shongololo Express can deliver you to the best game reserves and parks in Mozambique, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Tanzania from its Cape Town home.

asIaWhat better way to view the exotic Asian scenery and culture than from the window of your private air conditioned luxury rail cabin or suite? In Asia, The Eastern and Oriental Express harks back to a ‘colonial’ age of rattan chairs on the veranda, linen suits and tea

dances during which you are assured of the highest quality food and service. The Shangri La Express provides a memorable adventure across the Qinghai-Tibet plateau; reaching an altitude of 5 km above sea level. The Trans Siberian Railway is a network of routes stretching the length of Asia from Moscow to Vladivostok, Ulaanbaatar or Beijing.

canadaThe Royal Canadian Pacific travels around the Rocky Mountain ranges of Alberta and British Columbia in a journey so spectacular that National Geographic has named it as one of the “tours of a lifetime”. The Gold Leaf domed sightseeing cars on the Rocky Mountaineer Train from Vancouver to Banff offer unparalleled views on its two day traverse of the Canadian Rockies.

austRalIaYou don’t have to travel far to experience a high quality rail adventure; Australia has three great rail journeys for you to enjoy. Named in honour of the Afghan camel trains that originally trekked the same route, The Ghan travels from Adelaide to Darwin, calling en route at Alice Springs. The Southern Spirit travels a variety of routes including from Brisbane to Darwin, via Victoria and South Australia.

These Great Rail Journeys provide a level of unsurpassed comfort as you travel across many of the worlds most exotic countries.

LoCaL author’s deBut noveLYoung, debut Gold Coast author, Dana Cherie, has released Willow, a romantic thriller that explores the traumatic life of Willow James, with intriguing twists and turns as she tries to unravel her own feelings about those she once loved and the man who kidnapped her and may have stolen her heart.

Setting aside the numerous film and TV adaptations of the famous Baker Street detective, Anthony Horowitz has returned to the original books to produce a classic mystery novel, stripped back to the original style of Conan Doyle.

Liz deLiversIndie songstress Liz Martin lands in a sweet spot between pop, folk and jazz with her third album, Dance a Little, Live a Little, from Mullumbimby based label Vitamin Records. The daughter of Salvation Army folk, Martin has found a poetic groove with a remarkable collection of songs that reference Glam rock, Hebrew melodies, New Orleans big bands, Parisian noir thrillers and sci-fi romanticism.

Says Liz, “I wanted to write more playfully – to escape and dream, as well as purge some emotional angst. Over a long period of exile I wrote and recorded in my room. I played the parts in myself and sang little horn lines. By the end of it I was very ready to hang out with some real people. And real musicians! I wanted to let the songs loose.”

Having been likened to so many, and citing influences as diverse as vocal supergroups Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Supertramp and Queen, to the psychedelics of Pink Floyds, the Moody Blues and The Beattles, Invisible Friend has been described by Tony Bates of Highland FM as “The sort of group you wished you belong to, and discovered…”

Tomorrow, When The War Began 2, the much anticipated sequel to last year‘s huge hit Tomorrow, When The War Began, has been confirmed to begin filming at the end of the year. Writer/director Stuart Beattie will return, as will cast members Caitlin Stasey, Phoebe Tonkin, Deniz Akdeniz, Lincoln Lewis, Ashleigh Cummings, Chris Pang, and Andrew Ryan.

Though the sequel to the first movie, based on John Marsden’s much loved book series across several books, was never a certainty, healthy box office returns and Beattie’s brand recognition helped

Paramount across the line. For those of you already slavish following the film series progress, here’s the synopsis for TWTWB 2: “The group is in a state of depression. They spend most of the time in Hell whilst the war rages on outside in Wirrawee and Australia. With relationships beginning to grow and conflicts running high, the group eventually meet a band of free Australians known as ‘Harvey’s Heroes’, which is lead by the mysterious Major Harvey.”

That’s good enough for us at Life Gold Coast – watch this space!

tv neWsso sue Me – not so happy days...Remember the 1970s Happy Days sitcom that portrayed a more innocent time when any problem could be stitched up neatly in an episode, the one-liners flowed, and all was smiles and mom’s apple pie?

Well no one is smiling now, as the cast (minus Ron Howard and Henry Winkler) have brought a $10 million lawsuit against CBS Studios and Paramount Pictures. Evidently, nearly ten years ago, Erin Moran (Joani Cunningham) contacted the studio after seeing the casts’ images on slot machines at a casino, but was told that no money was owed. Of course, with the show an audience favourite from 1974 to 1984, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that plenty of Happy Days t-shirts, DVDs and memorabilia have been sold over the years. Then again, poker machines would have to be one of the weirder extensions of the much loved cast.

A spokesperson for CBS Consumer Products said, “We agree that funds are owed to the actors and have been working with them for quite some time to resolve the issue.”

We can just see The Fonz giving that statement the thumbs down.

Bottoms Up!Sounds like a naughty proposal, but Burleigh Brewing is taking it very

seriously! Fermenting in the tank right now, “Fanny Gertrude Bickie Beer” will be ready for bottling (and drinking!) in late May.

As Peta Fielding, CEO at Burleigh Brewing explains, “We have five core beers in our range and a couple of times a year we let the brew team go a bit crazy in what we call our ‘Bit on the Side Department’ and create a new beer for release in only a limited quantity in collectable bottles. The first two in this series were ‘My Wife’s Bitter’, followed by ‘Black Giraffe’. And now we’re about to release ‘Fanny Gertrude’s Bickie Beer’!”

The curious name was inspired by Peta’s Grandma’s Anzac bickies. “And my Grandma’s name really was Fanny Gertrude!”

The beer is described as “a smooth, creamy ale, the colour of a well-baked Anzac bickie, containing oats and organic coconut – supported by a blend of three specialty ‘biscuit’ malts to provide the beautiful bickie colour and complement the specialty bickie ingredients”.

The brewers have used a 100% pure vanilla addition in the brew, to give it that “fresh baked bickie” flavour and as many ingredients as possible are sourced locally.

If your mouth is watering, get yourself along to Burleigh Brewing’s “Tanks, Tales and Tasting”, Saturday 7 May, from 2pm for an hour. You’ll get expert insight into boutique beer brewing, sampling of four Burleigh Beers and a glass with their logo to take home. The bar stays open until 4pm so you can stay on and soak up the atmosphere.

Tap Room happenings take place the first Friday of every month, with a local band and German sausage BBQ. Best of all, profits go to a local charity or community group. If a tour takes your fancy, you can savour the ins and outs of production on the first Saturday of every month.

Life GoLd Coast

at a cocktail party some time back, a lady doctor remarked jokingly that there are two things in men that grow bigger with age: the ego and the prostate. There was nervous laughter all around

and the conversation moved on, but perhaps it should have been taken more seriously.

Like breast cancer in women, prostate cancer in men – especially in men over the age of 40 – is a subject customarily avoided. This is unfortunate, especially in this age of openness when few subjects are considered ‘taboo.’ Then again, very few of us like talking about our health.

The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system, around the size of a walnut and, just as the doctor said, it grows bigger with age. For most men, this is nothing really to worry about, although often it means more frequent trips to the loo during the night; but for some – a significant some – the aging process can also lead to prostate cancer.

According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, around 20,000 cases of this form of cancer are diagnosed in Australia each year and around 3,300 men die of the disease, roughly equal to the number of women who die of breast cancer.

If detected and treated early enough, it can be cured. If left undiagnosed or untreated, the cancer will eventually spread to other parts of the body making treatment much more difficult. When this happens it becomes life threatening.

For many men, this writer included, the first indication appears during a routine blood test with the discovery of an elevated ‘PSA’ reading (PSA stands for ‘Prostate Specific Antigen’, a protein produced specifically within the prostate). A ‘normal’ reading will return a result somewhere between zero and four. When I was tested, I had a reading of around ‘7’ – sufficient for me to be referred to a urologist for further testing. This led to a biopsy and the discovery that, yes, indeed cancer cells were present.

There are a number of options available for men diagnosed with prostate cancer ranging from ‘do nothing’, treatment or surgical removal.

Many men adopt the do nothing approach. Since the disease can be slow to develop, often men gamble that they will die of simple old age before the cancer takes over. Since treatment can have potentially serious side effects, including incontinence and impotence, some believe that the treatment can be worse than the disease.

After discussion with my wife, our GP and two specialists, we opted for surgical removal (it was a joint decision). The treatment option risked a return of the disease at a later time and the side effects during therapy would have been similar. Removal removed the risk for all time.

My own diagnosis was in April 2010 and I had my prostate removed in September of that year. That was almost seven months ago. It has been a difficult and testing time since then. Full recovery can take up to one year. Indeed incontinence and erectile dysfunction are severe in the early months. The first is overcome with time, diet and regular exercise to strengthen the abdominal muscles. The second is usually the more problematic and can take longer. Sexual stimulation (aided by prescription drugs) helps repair the nerves that lead to arousal, but in the early stages when you are dealing with incontinence, sexual engagement is usually the last thing on your mind.

According to medical experts I have spoken with many men simply give up or dealing with the problem leads to severe marital stress.

Yes, an understanding wife is essential to the recovery process. But it is easier to discuss the physical aspects with ones partner than the emotional side effects – and they can be enormous. Men take their ability to function sexually for granted. Loss of that ability can be traumatic. How can a woman possibly understand how it feels to be sexually inadequate? I can only suppose it is something akin to how a woman feels when having a breast or her uterus removed – something we men cannot truly comprehend.

The messages here, and there are two of them, are simple ones. If you are a male over the age of 40, then the next time you go for your regular check-up ask your doctor to include a PSA test; and if the result suggests that further testing, diagnosis or treatment is required, then involve your partner in the decision-making. Make those decisions together and recognise both the physical and emotional stress that you will be under.

Chances are, in doing so you will have someone by your side to help you deal with it and in the process you will be drawn closer together. And who knows, in the recovery phase, you may find ways to enjoy one another that you had never before considered.

Don’t let your ego get in the way.

Egos and prostatesOne man’s honest storyWords: Michael Clancy

director of Blood, Sweat and Dance, Ben Veitch, shows me to a rehearsal room in the Gold Coast exhibition centre where we can have a chat. Everything is black, and the room is hot, as if the dancers had just finished sweating out an 8-hour rehearsal. Standing where the

magic was actually created takes me back to the stunning performance, and the questions I have about the man behind the production that recently stunned audiences at the Gold Coast Arts Centre.

Ben was born, raised and trained as a dancer on the Gold Coast, beginning work as an industry dancer at just 14 years of age. His latest production, Blood, Sweat and Dance sold out swiftly, testament to the following Ben has as a dancer and choreographer. Some describe his style as “schizophrenic”, but Ben replied that what people see on the surface is really his deep-seated need for constant change. Said Ben, “I get bored quickly and it’s essential that I am always learning new things”.

Over the last 10 months, deep in the planning, writing and choreographing the new production, the head of Zealous Choreography dug deep in the midst of an emotional, creative journey. Then came the task to find the right cast to bring his vision to life.

“One of the hardest things to do was cast the show, to find really versatile, gutsy dancers,” said Ben. The final five dancers came from Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Dubbo. Charles Bartley, Rob Walters, Natasha Marconi, Shannon O'Shea and Cristina D'Agostino underwent rigorous 8-hour rehearsals, which included a fractured nose and spew buckets on either side of the stage.

Ben is of course, no stranger to tough rehearsals, working in major productions such as Chorus Line, The Boy from Oz and Dirty Dancing, as well as making the final four of So You Think You Can Dance in 2009. However, he admits Blood, Sweat and Dance was tough, consisting of 90 minutes of straight dancing and a rarefied territory where only exceptional dancers would succeed. Said Ben, “It got to the point where they really prided themselves on being able to transform”.

Clearly, the title of the production was true to the actual experience. Said Ben, “It was called Blood, Sweat and Dance for a reason. You want to see the dancers pushed to their absolute limit. I wanted to bring the audience into the dancer’s world instead of the other way around”.

His creative inspiration for choreography surfaced five years ago out of the soul searching that came when Ben injured his knee working alongside Hugh Jackman in The Boy from Oz. The resulting surgery meant he was unable to dance for 12 months, disaster for a dancer on the rise. Said Ben, “it forced me to realise that an end to my dancing career was inevitable. I had to ask myself, ‘what would I do if I couldn’t dance’”? The answer was Zealous Choreography.

Even though choreography requires Ben to step off the stage, his own experiences and observations were visible across the entire performance, from each character’s struggle with love, to the songs in the soundtrack.

Ben described the significance of shoes is woven into the performance, rooted in both universal truths of dancing and his own experiences. “As a dancer it’s the thing that connects you to the floor, and the only thing you have to aid you is the floor”, said Ben.

For now, Ben has set his sights on starting his own dance company and improving the professional dance landscape of the Gold Coast. “Unfortunately, there isn’t any professional work here, apart from the casino. There’s a massive gap between student and professional”.

But with audience’s reactions to his recent show nothing short of shock and awe, the pressure to create, and provide opportunities for other talented dancers, may just what Ben needs to dig deep again for more blood, sweat and tears.

kay, so you have been sticking to your training program consistently. You’ve been pushing yourself hard and breaking through some personal bests. You are shaping up and feeling great.

Then suddenly you’re not getting any faster or any stronger. That spare tyre has stopped shrinking and there is still no sculpted six pack to show for all your hard work.

Your training has hit a wall.

Unfortunately, the best training regime in the world won’t stack up if you aren’t supporting your workout with proper nutrition from a well balanced eating plan. In fact, a good eating plan is about 70% of the success of any training regime.

Let me explain: There are 168 hours in every week. In a perfect world if you slept for 8 hours each night and trained one hour a day for 7 days, that leaves 105 hours per week. That is 105 hours per week where your nutrition controls what your body looks like.

Sadly most people have no idea how to eat correctly and think that by exercising they can eat whatever they want. Big mistake!

Good nutrition is not the latest diet in Women’s Weekly. Diets do not work, point blank.

Depriving your body of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, is quite harmful. Fad diets come and go, simply because they are unsustainable and they don’t work. A healthy balanced diet is always the best approach and will allow your body to function more efficiently allowing you to achieve results consistently and maintain them for as long as you continue to eat well. Plus you dramatically improve your chances of having a longer, better quality of life.

Who wouldn’t want that?

Why do we even need food? Calories. Your body uses these tiny units of energy in order to function. Our calories come from the nutrients in food that include proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

Protein has multiple functions in the body, but I'll just concentrate on the most important: proteins are involved in growing, repairing, and replacing tissue. When protein intake exceeds output, protein is retained in tissue as new muscle is added. Obviously, this is something that you want.

Unrefined complex carbohydrates should be a staple of your eating plan. Complex carbohydrates are your body's preferred energy source. A moderate carbohydrate intake is essential to maintain high energy levels.

Don't worry – carbohydrates are not fattening as long as you select natural, unrefined complex carbs over processed, simple sugars and you keep portion sizes under control. You should also consume plenty of fresh vegetables. These provide your body with fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Eating healthy fats is vital for good health, muscle development and body fat loss. Attempting to remove all the fat from your diet can actually slow down muscle growth, decrease strength and decrease energy levels and dramatically slows down the body’s ability to burn fat.

Sadly, in Western societies around the world, people are getting fatter and fatter. We have made food a game. Food is not a reward, it’s not your friend and it won’t make you feel better about yourself if you have had a rough day. Food has one purpose: to supply your body with nutrients.

Cavemen didn't care if what they found to eat tasted

good; they just ate what they got. And of course, they also lived very physical lives.

Do not sacrifice nutrition for emotion. Your health and your waistline will thank you for it.

advances in tanning technology and design innovations mean leather furniture is no longer reserved for the rich and famous, but is now an

affordable ‘must have’ to suit any home interior.

Leading leather furniture company Stallion Design, has more than 300 local and imported lounge designs in every colour in the rainbow, from pale lavender to the more traditional tans and black, to appeal to all tastes.

Successful since 1974, managing director Garry Pearse says the reason for its continued growth is its ongoing pursuit of excellence. “Fashion and colour trends may come and go, but the one thing we don’t compromise on is quality,” says Garry.

What you may not know is that the quality is in the grain. Stallion Design uses only full-grain leather which will wear for at least 20 years. It is dyed to the various shades and shows the character of the beast it came from, including small marks, which add to the character and appeal of having leather, without affecting the quality or wearing ability.

“Because full-grain leather retains its natural structure, it will breathe and continue to remain supple if

looked after correctly, plus it’s simply more beautiful,” says Garry.

The alternative is corrected-grain leather which has the outer surface of the hide removed, either by splitting the hide and/or shaving the surface.

“The leather is then resurfaced to give it a grain, paint is applied and the whole thing is put through a finishing process. As a result, it loses elasticity and will not breathe. This treatment means that most corrected-grain leathers under normal wear and tear, will have a life expectancy of about five years, no matter how well you treat it. While you might save on the initial purchase, furniture covered in full-grain leather will still look good years after you’ve had to replace the corrected-grain pieces.”

There is no doubt that modern leather adds beauty and value making it the perfect choice for your home.

Stallion Design sells lounges, chairs, dining room settings and coffee tables all over Australia from its Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast showrooms. Visit their showroom located at 1/ 21 Ashmore Road, Bundall. Or phone 5592 5425 for more information.

have you tried everything to lift your home’s interior but the result is decidedly “ho hum”? Perhaps you may even have given up, assuming that to go any further with your plans to create enticing bathrooms

and kitchens will break the bank and over-capitalise?Tony from Builder’s Discount Warehouse has good news for you which will get you inspired, back in control of creating something you can be truly proud of and will pay off should you decide to sell when the time is right.

Says Tony, “It’s not uncommon to lose your inspiration and become bored with your home when trying to renovate. The key to getting back on track and transforming your home could be as simple as talking with an expert about your

project. Not only is this re-energising, but it could also save you a bundle”.

At the Builder’s Discount Warehouse you have experts at your disposal for free, the meter is not running and you can ask away. While you’re there of course, not only can you discuss your project with someone who knows the ins and outs of renovating bathrooms and kitchens, air conditioning units and flooring, you can actually look through all that this 1,000 sq metre showroom has to offer. Safe to say, when you walk through those doors, your jaw will drop with aisles and aisles of basins, cabinetry, taps, handles and more.

Says Tony, “The idea behind Builder’s Discount Warehouse is that you have the help you need with the actual products right there, so you can pay and drive home with everything you require to finish the job. If that doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what will!

“We have also just recently added a range of wooden flooring to our range of building products. For whatever reason, a beautiful wooden floor just makes people say, ‘wow!’ and so it’s one of the fastest, easiest and least expensive ways to give your home that x-factor – in a day,” said Tony.

In keeping with the cooler weather, Builder’s Discount Warehouse also has their air conditioning units on special as per the advertisement below.

Why go anywhere else when you can talk to an expert and get everything you need in one amazing location, and just one kilometre north of Ikea?

We are bombarded with 3,000 messages a day so when communicating with your audience, it’s important to think creatively, or you risk going unheard. What

many entrepreneurs miss out on is the opportunity to build their profile by combining free coverage in the media with a sound advertising strategy.Remember, your clients are sophisticated buyers and they’ll know when they’re being sold to, so you must connect with them authentically. One of the best ways to achieve this is to share a story.

People love a good story, and the media particularly like human interest stories as they know that their readers find this compelling reading. This is powerful because when you tell a story you ignite the unconscious mind.

But if you are wondering if you have any unique stories to share, rest assured the media are hungry for new angles on existing topics – all of the time.

The key is to craft your media campaign around ‘Hot Spots’ to make it easier and more likely that journalists will cover your story.

here are 10 ways to reveal several potential stories that you can use in a media campaign:

1What are you passionate about? If you’re excited about something then chances are your audience will be too. When someone is passionate about a

hobby, they tend to devour everything available about the topic. This makes you an expert with an angle others may not have. Search topics you are interested in for great story ideas.

2 Have you had an adventure? Have you hiked the Kokoda Trail, abseiled down Cape Town’s Table Mountain or travelled to a remote and wild

location? Maybe you’ve had an adventure right in your own backyard. People love tales of adventure so make a list of all the exciting things you’ve done.

3 Get to know your ‘hungry crowd’. These are your customers who love you, your products and services. They are the ones who read every e-zine,

attend every workshop and are on the waitlist for your next product release. Ask them what they love most about being your customer. When you receive their feedback get their permission to quote them in the media. Most people love seeing their name in print, and are happy to agree.

4Learn more about your silent clients. These are the ones who purchase from you but you don’t know much about them. And you need to. What are they

interested in? What are their frustrations, dislikes and

problems? A great way to learn more about your silent clients is to create an ‘Ask Campaign’. Be honest and explain that you’d like to get to know them better to improve your customer service. Most will be willing to share their thoughts. Visit www.surveymonkey.com for a free survey creating tool.

5 Visit a newsagent and scour the headlines of lifestyle, business, trade and financial magazines. See any patterns or trends? If you are drawn to a particular

publication, pay attention to what caught your attention. Is it something you have got an interest in? Now think creatively. If you see an article on spiritual midwifery and you’re a financial planner, who also happens to be passionate about natural birthing practices, couldn’t you craft a story about the importance of developing a savings plan to fund a home birth?

6 Have you had a sought-after career? Think back to all the roles you’ve performed throughout your career and consider what appealed to you most.

Pay attention to any stories you may have shared that others found fascinating. If your friends and family enjoyed hearing about your career highlights, so will your potential clients.

7 Pay attention to what’s being featured on television, especially current affair shows, news channels, and niche channels like Lifestyle or Discovery.

These channels often have a passionate following that is interested in your fresh perspective on a favourite topic.

8 Stay on top of what’s hot news around the world. Fortunately there are plenty of sites that offer up-tothe minute news on today’s hot topics. One good

site which gives you all the breaking news headlines is www.1stheadlines.com. Use these headlines as a ‘trigger’ to come up with some great story ideas.

9 On the Internet you’ll find blogs, forums and message boards on every conceivable topic. Visit Google Groups on groups.google.com to check

out topics of interest to you and your audience. Spend some time observing what people are chatting about. Participating in these forums and chats are key. Don’t join and start selling! Look and listen to what your clients are asking for, then offer support and advice.

10 My personal favourite. Gather together a bunch of your friends with a couple of bottles of your favourite vino (don’t forget to invite me!) and a spread of

tasty snacks. Not only is this a great way to spend an afternoon, but you’ll have the chance to reminisce and tell stories…stories that others would also love to hear. Keep a notepad handy to jot down any ideas that crop up. Have fun with it, and you’ll be amazed at how easy it can be to come up with a list of great stories the media will love.

this financial year Australians will spend a staggering $5.8 billion dollars trying to look their best – equating to $258.70 per person. And while some Aussies are relatively low maintenance, getting by with a semi regular haircut and little else, a growing number are indulging in weekly rituals such as tanning, facials, hair removal

and personal training, as well as regular cosmetic procedures to preserve their looks.

IBISWorld General Manager (Australia), Mr Robert Bryant, said cosmetic procedures were by far the fastest growing segment of all those industries involved in making us look good, with an estimated 22.5% spike in expenditure in 2010-11 to $550 million.

Lippy Love“This is a sector which has been growing at a phenomenal rate for several years now, with women in their 30s and 40s driving demand,” said Mr Bryant. “In the 12 months to March 2010, we spent $448.5 million on non-invasive or minimally invasive treatments – up 30% from 2009.”

Men are also showing increasing concern about the quality of their skin, boosting demand for laser rejuvenation treatments specifically targeted at the male market.

pLastiC fantastiC Australians will spend $745.1 million on plastic surgery procedures this financial year, an increase of 3.9% from last year with estimates indicating demand for cosmetic plastic surgery has tripled over the past decade.

“Facelifts and rhinoplasty are the most commonly performed procedures, followed by breast augmentation and tummy tucks,” said Mr Bryant. “What would once have seemed the height of vanity, now seems positively ordinary to many Australians.”

For Australians classified as obese and overweight, liposuction and lap-band surgery have now become the procedures of choice, with success rates and safety levels steadily rising.

Around 15,000 liposuction surgeries are performed in Australia yearly. They are performed purely for cosmetic reasons, rather than health related. In 2010-2011, IBISWorld forecasts Australian’s will spend between $60 and $70 million on these operations.

Lap-band surgeries, on the other hand, are the last resort for people suffering from weight related problems and are therefore performed for health related reasons. The average cost of lap band surgery is around $6000, and its popularity has been on the rise largely due to a greater acceptance of the procedure, more surgeons practising and advocating the surgery, and increased awareness of the health risks associated with obesity.

“In total, Australians will spend $115.3 million on weight loss surgeries in 2010-11, an increase of 1.7% year on year,” said Mr Bryant

saLon styLeThe traditional hair and beauty sector receives the bulk of our beauty spend with IBISWorld predicting an outlay of $3448 million in 2010-11, an increase of 3.5% from last year.

It seems we’re a nation who loves our locks, with hairdressing services accounting for 85% of salons’ total revenue, while beauty treatments make up 5%, and product sales account for 10%. The most common – and popular – beauty procedures include waxing, facials, eyelash and eyebrow tinting, manicures and other hair removal services with women outspending men 2:1.
