“No branch can bear fruit by itself: it must remain in the vine” -John 15.4

According to the Bible, every Christian is a branch in Christ, who is the main tree. Christians believe that they are unique be-cause they are an integral part of Jesus.

In my view, service is lacking nowadays. Missionaries lived, worked and died in hospitals in rural areas. They believed their children and family would be taken care of by the living God. It is true that even today hundreds of Christians work for others. But do we maintain this duty and devotion while discharging our duties? A branch of a good variety of grape that is with the main plant must give good results as compared to an inferior variety. Our Lord God can take care of all our requirements.

Secondly, grape plants need pruning. Only words from the Bible can prune the conscience of a man. I cannot warn / ad-monish / advise others because I am equally wrong in many matters. The word of God can prune us to make us give more fruit.

When I worked in Karunya University, I grew grapes in front of my residential quar-ters. One day, a friend who had a vineyard nearby noticed these over-grown plants. When I was away from Coimbatore he arranged to cut all the branches 2-3 inches from the main branch. Alas! The beautiful green pandal was gone! I got angry with him. But after one month, lots of flowers followed by hundreds of grape bunches were hanging beautifully.

Likewise, we need pruning. Only then can we give good results i.e., serve hu-manity in a more meaningful way. Do we accept pruning?

CMAI News

Dear friends,

Greetings from CMAI in Jesus name!

As I visit various institutions – some doing well, some not so well, some facing problems – I thought I should share some insights here from the Bible regarding a basic principle that affects leadership. We need to acknowledge the fact that ALL authority is for the good and is appointed by God. Those who rebel against authority are in fact rebelling against God (Romans 13:1-5)! When the Israelites grumbled / rebelled against Moses, they were rebelling against the LORD (Exodus 16:8)! We as followers of Christ Jesus should be role models in this aspect also by honoring our leaders at our workplaces.

The fourth CME on Emergency Medicine, organised by CMAI in association with the Department of Emergency Medicine, CMC, Vellore, was held from 3 to 4 June at Wanless Hospital, Miraj Medical Centre, Miraj, Maharashtra, and was led by the Department Head, Dr Suresh David. We had good participation from Christian hospitals, private and government institutions. Dr Deepak Kamle, Director of Wanless Hospital, and the team at Wanless Hospital extended full co-operation for the event’s success.

From 15 to 21 July, I was in Kolkata for the Orientation Programme on the Supplementary Course for Medical Students offered by the Distance Education Department at CMC, Vellore. I also met with the Director of Mercy Hospital, Mr Sanjay Prasad, and Mrs Premila of Emmanuel Ministries, Kolkata. It was encouraging to see the good work continuing successfully at these places.

As we continue to follow Christ Jesus, the greatest leader ever, I am sure we will see success in all our endeavours. I also want to remind you about the upcoming Biennial Conference. We want to invite you all to attend in large numbers.

In Christ,

Seminar on Orientation of NABL Accreditation for Clinical Labora-toriesPraise be to God that despite the turmoil due to Telangana issue, the workshop on Orien-

tation of NABL Accreditation for Clinical Laboratories went ahead and took place on 19 July 2011 at Hotel Central Park, Hyderabad, with active interaction with 35 participants.

Fr Norvy Paul, Assistant Director, CHAI, inaugurated the seminar. Dr Anita David, Member, CMAI, welcomed the gathering.

The Management Standards of ISO 15189 were covered by Dr Aparna Dhawan and Dr

Punam Bajaj, Accreditation Officers, NABL, and the Technical Requirements were pre-sented by Dr G L Somayajulu, NABL Assessor, and Mrs Poonam Prashant, Secunderabad Diagnostics Centre.

The seminar concluded with a panel discussion.

CMAI, with the support of NABL, has previously completed such orientation programmes in Kerala, Bangalore, Mumbai, Guwahati and Hyderabad.

Orientation Programme for Supplementary Course, KolkataThe Orientation Programme for the Supplementary Course for Medical Students offered by the Distance Education Department at CMC, Vellore, was held in Kolkata on 18 July. The roles of CMC, Vellore, EMFI and CMAI in taking this new venture forward were discussed. At present, for the first year of its inception, five hospitals and students have shown good responses. This pertains to medical students who completed the first year of MBBS from any medical college. It is aimed at supplementing their studies and to give more exposure, especially in practical rural settings.

CME on Emergency Medicine, MirajThe fourth CME on Emergency Medicine, organised by CMAI in association with the

Department of Emergency Medicine, CMC, Vellore, was held from 3 to 4 June at Wanless Hospital, Miraj Medical Centre, Miraj, Maharashtra, and was led by the Department Head, Dr Suresh David. We had good participation from Christian, private and government hospitals. Maharashtra Medical Council offered credit hours for doctors who attended all sessions. Thanks to Dr Deepak Kamle, Director, Wanless Hospital, and Dr Rohini Suryavanshi for organising the workshop.

41st Biennial Conference of CMAI

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

Hope this letter finds you full of a cheerful spirit and positive outlook. The pressing need of the hour is the growth of nursing in the subcontinent. Amidst activity at various levels – both regional and national – various governing issues related to nursing and its future have been discussed. A consultation on this was organised by the Fortis Group of Hospitals at Delhi. The Catholic Health Association of India, as part of its celebrations on completing 25 years in Hyderabad, organised a 1-day workshop on the Future of Nursing in India.

The MIBE Executive Committee meeting was held at MIBE Office, Nagpur, on 8 July 2011. Looking ahead, we have the challenging task of finding a suitable successor to Ms Mamta Soren. As she has been bearing the dual responsibility of both Secretary, MIBE, and Principal, Graduate School of Nursing, Indore, we need an ideal replacement for the post of the Principal, GSN too. Please continue to uphold this in your prayers.

The Council meeting at CMC, Vellore, went off well. I had the privilege of being a part of it.

As the Biennial Conference is approaching, let us prepare ourselves in letter and spirit to make the occasion a truly momentous one.

With prayers,

CMAI News

Dear Members,

The month-long monsoon session of Parliament has just begun and predictions that very less time will be available for constructive work are coming true! We need to pray that when our Parliament meets, it should spend more time in planning and passing important bills. Talking of legislations, my mind goes to the recent implementation of Clinical Establishment Acts in many states of India where impracticable laws have been imposed on our mission hospitals. It is true that Government should play a regulatory role in guarding the interests of the citizens but regulations should not hinder the reach of essential health care services. The policy advocacy desk of CMAI is planning to take this issue up at the appropriate forums. If you have any input on this issue, please mail it to me.

There is a proposal for the starting of a certificate course by our Section on Laws on Hospital Administration under distance education. This course would pave the way for awareness on legal issues which might go a long way in defending the managements of the hospitals and its doctors. This course aims to give a bird’s-eye view of the constitutional and statutory arrangements in the administration of our country. It will cover subjects like basic structure of judiciary in India and its functions, civil & criminal law and its applications, contract law and the Consumer Protection Act and its applications, various legal issues in hospital administration and possible solutions, medical laws and their application in hospital administration, and labour laws and their application in hospital administration.

Please book your ticket to reach Chennai on 2 November 2011 to attend the 41st Biennial Conference. A personal letter of invitation is being sent to all the members.

In Christ,

Dear friends in Christ,

In the last issue of LFA, I described the achievement of obtaining from IGNOU, the share of fees of our member institution training centres. I am delighted to inform you that we received the amount for the 2nd batch also (2010 batch). The amount is being dispatched from the General Secretary’s office.

We have received new registrations for the current academic year and the enrollment cards will be dispatched to all students soon. The schedules for the practicals are also being sorted out simultaneously with the office of the Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU. We hope things will soon be streamlined and there will not be any hurdles after the first batch completes.

We are in receipt of queries related to lateral entry from the alumnus of our courses. We hope to launch this by next academic year if everything comes through. This needs the approval of the academic council of IGNOU and a lot of preparation.

Our next focus is the forthcoming Biennial Conference at Chennai. We are sending brochures and invitation letters to all members and member institutions. I take this opportunity to invite you all for the most anticipated event of this year. I request those who would like to participate in the scientific sessions to send the abstracts by 30 September 2011.

Please uphold all the activities in your daily prayers.
