Dear Member,What a beautiful Summer it has been! The Pool events had great participation this year. Everyone had a great time at the Llanerch Fun Fair. The Adult White-Out Party was a great success as you can see on the front cover!

Sadly, Summer is coming to an end. We hope you can join us as we say goodbye to Summer at our Annual Labor Day Celebration! Please join us at the Pool on Saturday, September 7, 2019 for Yappy Hour! Meet our Llanerch Goose Chasers, Zeus and Jazz! Bring your four legged friends for a swim before closing the Pool for the season! We are celebrating 100 Years of Llanerch this year at the Llanerch Centennial Celebration on Saturday, September 28, 2019. Come join the celebration for some golf, great food and dancing! I want to thank the Committee for their dedication to this event. You will soon see the fruits of their work as we decorate the Clubhouse with portraits depicting our storied history. You can view the flyer on page 7. The Celebration of our 100th year reminds us of our past. We are all well aware of the present day Llanerch which we enjoy every day, but we are also building a solid base for the future. I was leaving a Board Meeting one morning at 8:30 and noticed 60 or more members of our Junior Junior Golf Program on the Driving Range, that was impressive. As you look through the newsletter you will notice pictures illustrating the participation of our young members in the Tennis Programs and Swim Team as well. These are the future members of Llanerch and what a bright future it will be.

I don’t know about you but I am looking forward to Fall? The crisp weather is my favorite time of year to golf! The Adult Scavenger Hunt is back by popular demand on Saturday, October 19, 2019. We also have our Annual Family Halloween Party on Sunday, October 27, 2019. Everyone better start thinking of costume ideas! I hope to see you around the Club! Sincerely,Bob Pomante | President What one golfer learned playing every major venue (all 119 of them!), from the hardest test to the toughest get Joey Hines, 60, has traversed the globe, playing every course that has hosted a major. Here’s what he learned along the way and what he said about our beloved Golf Course! HARDEST GREENS | Joey Hines

Though the firm, fast greens at Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, Pa. (1958 PGA Championship), gave Hines everything that he could handle, the staunchest test of his flat-stick came at another Pennsylvania course. You can probably guess the one. “There are lots of difficult greens out there in the world, but Oakmont, good lord,” Hines says. “They are everything you’ve heard about, and more.”

About five years ago I tried golf with 100-year-old hickory clubs for the first time and it’s more than a bit different than today’s game. There is no place to hide when the sweet spot on the club is the size of a pea. Though, when you make a good strike it gives you an unbelievable feeling and appreciation for the game the members of Llanerch played when the Club was formed.

1901 is the date the first golf club was chartered on this property, but it wasn’t until 1919, 100 years ago, when Thomas Fitzgerald founded Llanerch Country Club. Thankfully, we have had members, like Wilbur Germain and Dan Comly Sr, who collected dozens of bins of photos, documents and stories to help preserve our history. The stories and pictures have revealed some fascinating events from the past 100 years. Stories such as member Dorothy Germain Porter winning the US Amateur, Byron Nelson winning his seventh of eleven PGA tour events with a final round 63 and even War Bond events hosted by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby to support the war effort. We also have Llanerch News dating back to the 1920’s that show members of that time voicing the same complaints we still have today about slow play and bunker conditions. Another similarity between today and in the 1930’s was the popularity of winter golf. Marty Lyons, the longtime pro, said they would only stop playing when they had to shovel a path in the snow.

Thanks to the help of Cindy Ertner, Chris Wilkinson and the Board, a lot of this history will be displayed prominently around the Club. Over 30 pieces have been framed, including programs from great events and scorecards back when the course consisted of 27 holes. We will celebrate our history at the Centennial Event on September 28th, with the opportunity to try hickory clubs on some of our holes, along with viewing the history hung up around the Club. It is our hope that seeing more of Llanerch’s history on display will give members, guests and staff a sense of pride for what has made Llanerch a remarkable Club for over 100 years. David Atkinson
