I am thrilled and delighted to be Patron of the Life After Stroke Awards. In the UK, someone somewhere will have a stroke every five minutes. Stroke can be devastating, not only for the survivor of the illness, but also for their loved ones. That’s why I support the Stroke Association.

Welcome

The Life After Stroke Awards recognise the achievements of everyone affected by stroke. We celebrate stroke survivors for showing tremendous spirit and determination after their stroke. We also commend carers, volunteers, stroke clubs and health professionals who are with stroke survivors every step of the way. Our stroke community is a force for good. Stroke is devastating. It can happen to anyone, at any time, regardless of age, gender, race or social status; the hard working father of three, the baby daughter, the first time young mother, the much loved grandparent. It can rob you of your speech, your vision, your ability to walk, your memory, your independence and your dignity. It can also kill you in an instant.

We are the Stroke Association We believe in life after stroke

Simply put, stroke is one of the biggest health challenges of our time:

• There are more than 100,000 strokes in the UK each year; that is around one stroke every five minutes.

• Stroke is the fourth single leading cause of death in the UK. • Stroke is a leading cause of disability in the UK – almost two thirds

of stroke survivors leave hospital with a disability. • There are over 1.2 million stroke survivors in the UK.

That’s why every year, through the Life After Stroke Awards, we champion the outstanding compassion and unfailing commitment of the stroke survivors, individuals, groups and organisations that help to rebuild lives after the devastating impact of stroke. From amazing volunteers, carers and stroke survivors themselves; to companies raising money for our services and scientists making life-saving breakthroughs in research; we recognise and celebrate these extraordinary stories of strength, resilience and courage in the face of adversity to conquer stroke.

2016 Life After Stroke Awards winners.

Annabel Jones 2015 Fundraiser of the year award In 2011 Annabel was eating lunch at her desk when her eyesight dramatically worsened. After visiting her GP with the help of a colleague, she was immediately sent to hospital where a neurologist confirmed her worst fears, she had had a stroke. Six years on, she has helped to raise over £40,000 for the Stroke Association by running the Cardiff Half Marathon with her colleagues from Barclays Bank.

Nick Cann 2016 Fundraiser of the year award Nick Cann, former Chief Executive of the Institute of Financial Planning (IFP), was delivering a lecture to students when he suddenly collapsed and was rushed to hospital. His family received the heart-breaking news that he’d had a major stroke which left him with severe communication problems. In the four years since his stroke, Nick has dedicated his time to raising money for the Stroke Association after we supported him through his rehabilitation. He also set up a new venture called Project Phoenix, which aims to help people with aphasia get their lives back. Project Phoenix has so far raised a staggering £57,000.
