Lidingöloppet is approaching middle age, but is as healthy and active as ever, and full of ambitions to become better year on year. The strong trend within running for fitness is continuing this year too. 2011 was a record year with over 43, 000 participants and we are expecting a further increase this year. We are overwhelmed that so many people appreciate Lidingöloppet’s range of different events, but we’re not content just with this. We are challenging ourselves to make the race experience for runners and spectators even better with the assistance of both our partners and our fantastic team of race officials and helpers. This year, we have a number of new things for you. These include an additional start group for the 30 km race in order to reduce congestion in the start groups and to increase your race enjoyment. Lidingöloppet 15 is a competition class as of this year’s race. We are launching a special charity relay in conjunction with Hjärt-Lungfonden (Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation) which will be organised on Friday. This will mean that you can compete both in the race itself and also to collect as much money as possible for heart and lung research. Media production will also be improved with big screen images both at the finish at Grönsta gärde and at Lidingövallen so that more spectators can follow the race. As well as all this, we have also booked good weather for the weekend! We sincerely hope this will be delivered as ordered, and wish you all a warm welcome to this year’s highlight of the running calendar.

Here’s where it’s all happening!

GRÖNSTA GÄRDE – EVENT CENTRE Grönsta gärde is the obvious heart of the Lidingöloppet race festival. Many of the races (but not 15 km or 30 km) start here and all the races finish here. Grönsta gärde hosts the finish celebrations, prizegiving ceremonies, exhibitions and entertainment. You can also follow the races on the large screens on-site. And if you are hungry, you can choose from the range of food offered in the res-taurant tent. Our running equipment exhibition is located just after the finish. This is where our sponsors and part-ners present interesting and useful equipment and also where you can purchase race clothing and souvenirs. Number bib collection on Friday 28 September for Ruset, På Gång and Relays.

MILLESGåRDEN Remember to take the opportunity to visit Lidingö’s largest tourist attraction – Millesgården – located at Herserudsvägen 32. This year’s design motif on the race medals (The Sisters, from The Fountain of Faith) was designed by Carl Milles in 1952, and his statue can be found here.

Open daily 11.00–17.00. www.millesgarden.se

KOLTORPS GÄRDE Start location for the 15 km and 30 km races.

Spectators can obtain refreshments at the café and watch the starts from excellent viewing places.

LIDINGÖVALLEN – THE HUB All start and finish sites are within walking distance, and connections to public transport are not far away. Buses stop right outside Lidingövallen and there are also parking spaces here for those travelling by car. Nearly everything is within a radius of 1.5 km. At Lidingövallen you can visit Lidingöloppet’s partners, exhibitors and the organisers of the other races which are part of the multi-discipline “En Svensk Klassiker” (A Swedish Classic) competition.

For runners:

Sunday 30 September Annica is the person who will greet the race winners with the laurel wreath.

The person who will greet the Lidingöloppet race winners with the laurel wreath this year is Annica Gustafsson who is a top orien-teer and member of IFK Lidingö SOK. Annica’s merits include two Swedish championship gold medals (relay 2008 and 2011), two silver medals (ultra-long distance 2011 and relay 2010) one bronze medal (medium distance 2010) as well a victory with her club in the prestigious 10-mila international relay. Annica made the Swedish team for the European Championships this spring and also for the Euromeeting international competition in August.

Annica grew up in an orienteering family and has competed in the sport from a very early age. Running is a big part of Annica’s training for orienteering and she has also competed in one Lidingö Tjejlopp. That was in 2010 when she finished in 26th place with a time of 42.30.

Normally Annica doesn’t have time to compete during the busy Lidingöloppet weekend. As a member of the organising club, there are a host of jobs today and Annica has done many of them.

‘One year I drove runners who had been forced to retire back to the finish. Most of them were still in good spirits and vowing to be back for revenge next year. And last year I helped with the new GPS tracking system. That was really exciting.’

What’s the best about Lidingöloppet? ‘It’s seeing all the energy and joy that the runners show. Many of them have trained a long time and the feeling of achieving their goal shines in their eyes. That’s fantastic!’

Good luck to all of you!

Lidingöloppet’s environmental windowHello!

This year we have received status as an Environmentally-Friendly Event and we hope that you can help us to continue this green policy both during your visit to us and at home before and after the event. Some of the issues where you can help are listed below. A big thank you in advance!

TRANSPORTTravel by train (www.sjevent.se), bus (www.lidingoloppet.se) or other means of public transport and use our free bus service. If you must travel by car, please coordinate your journey with family/friends/club mates and travel together. If you live or have accommodation close by, we hope that you will consider cycling to the event.

RUBBISHDispose of your rubbish at the directed point and source segregate the rubbish where possible. There are a number of waste segregation stations at the event site. Your chip is electronic waste, dispose of it at the proper place or take it with you to sort for disposal at home.

ALONG THE COURSEIf you carry your own gels, bars or similar with you on the course, don’t just throw the packaging etc. away, but take it with you to the next drinks station and put it in a rubbish bin there. It is prohibited to leave your litter in the countryside.

SHOWERSPlease do not waste water when showering. By way doing so you will help to save water as well as energy needed to heat the water. Turn off the shower when you have finished and preferably allow someone else to use the shower when using the soap. Please use our soap where this is provided.

PS: This year, the bananas you receive from us are environ-mentally-labelled.

We remind you that Lidingöloppet is a strenuous physical race. We recommend therefore that you are in good health and fitness before you take on this challenge. If you are unsure, contact our race doctor at the start. We remind you that you compete at your own risk.

Health advice

Last minute tips before the raceGet ready for Lidingöloppet with tips and ideas from Malin Ewerlöf Krepp, multi-winner of the K30 class. In 2009, Malin won in a time of 1.57.46.

THE LAST PREPARATIONS BEFORE THE RACE:Cut your toenails, file any hard skin on your feet and rub them with a soft cream.

Avoid competing in brand new shoes.

Eat normally with a slight extra focus on carbohydrates in the last 2-3 days before the race and drink plenty of water.

Pack your race bag the evening before the race so that you don’t forget anything important such as number bib, chip etc.

Other important things to have in your bag include a change of clothes, plasters, Vaseline, bananas/energy bars, water and toilet paper/tissues.

You have done the training. Rest and sleep properly. Jog and stretch the day before so that your legs are well toned.

Be mentally and physically prepared for the big challenge. You should be eager to race and become tired!

HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE YOUR MAxIMUM PERFORMANCE IN A RACE?Set a realistic goal – how fit are you really?

Set a tactic for the race – how fast should I run per km?

Don’t start off too fast – keep cool! Many run much too fast in the beginning.

Think about one km at a time – never start to think that there’s still a long way left to the finish.

It will start to get hard after half-way. Try to save energy for this. Have fun as long as possible.

Ignore negative thoughts. Try to concentrate instead on your run-ning technique, the cheering spectators, and the great atmosphere.

Find a person in front of you who you want to pass because they are looking tired. This will give you an incentive.

Think about how well you are running and how great it will be when you have finished.

You will be more satisfied afterwards if you have really fought and given your best. If you have given your best, you will always be happy with yourself!

FACTORS THAT MAY MEAN THAT YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL Stitch – press hard and massage the place where you are suffering stitch.

Cramp – drink a little but often during the whole race.

Blisters – rub your feet with Vaseline before the race to reduce the risk of blisters. Wear a pair of well run-in shoes for the race, not completely new ones, and good socks that do not sag. Otherwise you may encounter problems with your feet.

Injury niggles – do not start the race if you are injured. You must be prepared for some pain and discomfort, but not the wrong type of pain, such as injury pain. Be clever and think long-term. Abandon the race at the right time if you experience an injury.

You run too fast in the beginning and meet ‘the wall”, i.e. run out of energy.

You run too slow in the beginning and have too much energy left at the finish.

I wish you the best of luck! Malin Ewerlöf Krepp
