Lick and the UK’s two other leading brands of frozen yogurt were blind tasted by a panel of typical consumers. Participants were asked to assess the 3 product samples and rank them according to overall preference and to provide comments on their selection in terms of texture, taste and which product had the best ‘natural yogurt’ taste.

The method used during the assessment was as per BS ISO 8587: 2006 (Sensory

Analysis – Methodology – Ranking). Participants were presented with an electronic questionnaire (using the FIZZ data capture system), water / cracker to cleanse the palate and a tray with the three product samples, which were labelled with their three-digit codes. The order in which the participants were asked to taste the samples was altered so that each combination was used an equal number of times.

“BEST FROYO

I’VE TASTED”

We had tried this froyo at the Lick shop in Brighton and wanted to have it at home. It tastes as good, if not better as it does from the shop and is extremely moreish. I really like that there is no bitter aftertaste with this yoghurt, unlike other brands. Delicious.

Surprisingly creamy and smooth for a yogurt. Tastes indulgent so the fat free element is a total bonus. Would like to see more fl avours please.

I’ve switched to this from some well known ice cream brands as its really delicious! I bought it as it had really positive reviews and I’ve been looking for a decent frozen yogurt but I wasn’t expecting to fi nd that I actually prefer this to some ice cream! Surpasses the other frozen yogurt brands I’ve tried by a mile.

Lick was the UK’s first ever frozen yogurt store, opening in March 2008. Later that year it was shortlisted for a UK Restaurant & Bar Design award, and in 2013 was named as the best fro-yo store in the UK by The Times. When the shop closed, over 6000 Lick fans queued down two streets to get their last Lick fro-yo. The shop hosted music sessions, art exhibitions and pop up cinema screenings. Regular customers included Nick Cave, Steve Coogan, Rizzle Kicks and Charlotte Church (who also played a gig there).

Friends Ky Wright and Owain Williams started Lick whilst still in school. At the age of 17 they bought an ice cream trike and began selling their home-made, natural frozen yogurt and ice cream during the summer holidays in the seaside resort of Tenby, South Wales. The money they made each summer enabled them to grow and by their 6th year their operation had expanded to 2 trikes and an entire beach, including 2 ice cream kiosks, an ice cream van, deck chairs and a bouncy castle.

After University they decided to move to Brighton (which they heard was the UK’s sunniest town) to open Lick in Brighton’s famous lanes. But first, the two set out on a world tour of frozen yogurt that took them to Barcelona, Rome and New York. Then, with the help of world renowned designers Joby Barnard (formerly of innocent Smoothies) and Freshwest Design (who happened to also be friends from their home town), they opened the UK’s first frozen yogurt shop.

Within a month of launching, over 100 Lick followers paid £5 to sign up to our fan club ‘Special Gang’. They are our hard-core fans who do anything to help us and are rewarded by receiving exclusive Lick goodies including an embroidered Special Gang badge and VIP invites to our music sessions. Nick Cave (rock star), Matt Horne (heart-throb) and Dan Germain (Innocent) are notable members.

Special gang members go to extraordinary lengths to show their dedication to the cause, making their own jumpers, branding their pets, baking dough versions of Lick’s mascot and sending in pictures of themselves eating licks in the rain.

SPECIAL GANG MEMBERS

We’re big fans of live music, and like to use our space to give new bands a platform and to reward our loyal customers. This is why we invite touring bands to play at Lick in return for frozen yogurt. These sessions are promoted on our social media, filmed, and then uploaded to the Music section of our website for everybody to enjoy. The Special Gang are invited to our sessions, and get a free Lick fro-yo to watch with.

We’ve had bands such as Frightened Rabbit (Atlantic Records), Maps & Atlases (FatCat Records), James Yorkston (Domino Records), Charlotte Church (really famous) and more. We also have several small releases coming out on our new record label ‘Lick Music’, which will all be on sale in independent record stores.
