Mushroom CasingHarte Peat South Africa / Africa
With a fully integrated automated production facility, Harte Peat has control over the entire process from the raw material stage to the bagging and packing of the final product. This allows Harte Peat to exercise strict and exacting standards on production quality and costs
Lichen is the exclusive supplier of Harte Peat in Africa, supplying more than 80% of the mushroom industry volume. Being a dominant and trusted supplier is a valuable position to endorse the other
Lichen growing medium brands as a trusted supplier for new clients.
Harte Peat Ireland has been producing casing for the worldwide market for over 20 years. The success of our business has been built on meeting our customers’ expectations in relation to product quality, mix quality and freedom from disease.
Whatever your growing system, Harte Peat can provide casing to meet your requirements.
Harte Peat have been running their own peat bogs which adhere to the Mushroom Casing Standards provided by Bord Bia. We are regularly audited by Bord Bia. Our Peat Extraction
Process is in line with strict environmental and industry best practice directives.
Testing for Salmonella, E-Coli & Listeria
Harte Peat, our casing supplier, does regular testing for Listeria as follows:
Harte produces 2 batches per week on site, production on Mon, Tue & Wed is the first batch and production on Thursday, Friday & Saturday is the second batch, each batch has a number determined by the corresponding Julian calendar number, the Julian date on Monday for batch 1 and Julian date for Thursday on batch 2.
All raw materials would have a certificate of Salmonella, E-Coli & Listeria free status, we also take quarterly samples of each input and send for testing at an approved Laboratory.
A sample of the blended finished product from the daily production run on every batch is sent to an Approved lab for testing, the process involves taking a daily sample and from this a representative batch sample is sent to the lab, each batch is certified for Listeria, Salmonella & E-coli free status.
Harte can provide a certification on all the batches that we supply to a farm. Each container of Harte Peat also has a phytosanitary certificate by container serial number.

Phase Three CompostSouth Africa is facing a drought in various parts of the country, this has placed the straw farmers at risk who supply the mushroom farms with straw to make compost. A second area of concern is the avian bird flu which has placed chicken manure part of the compost mix also at risk. Lichen Group has been forwarding thinking and secured the agency for Sub Sahara Africa and the SADC region.
Coconut chips are made from coconut husks that are run through chipping machines.
They come in several sizes and are useful to growers who need to constantly provide nutrients
to their crops. Drainage is outstanding and the coarse
texture allows easy root penetration.
Types of Coco Peat / Coco Coir
The “peat” of coconut coir, this basically looks like finely ground coconut or peat moss.
It’s so small and absorbent that if you were to use coco peat
as your only growing medium, you might drown out the roots of your plants. It must be aged
properly to be used as a growing media, as it can let out salts that
will kill your plant if you’re not careful. Choosing a coconut coir manufacturer that ages properly is thus crucial for good growing.
Coconut fibre adds air pockets into your medium. It’s not
very absorbent, which is good because your growing media needs air pockets in order to
provide oxygen to the root zone. Coconut fibres do not break down quickly, which adds texture to the blend.
Coco Peat Coco Fibre Coco Chips
All Projar coir products are consistently of the highest quality, pre-washed with low EC and ready for use.

Benefits of Coco Peat / Coco Coir
Good transition from soil
gardening
Growing in coco coir feels like growing
in soil, because the two media look so
similar. You can have a completely hydroponic garden that looks almost the same as a soil garden. The only
difference is instead of watering with only
water, you’d water your coconut coir
garden with nutrient-enriched water.
Insect-neutral
Most garden pests do not enjoy settling
in coconut coir, making it yet another
line of defense in your integrated pest management system
for your garden.
Environmentally safe
It can be used more than once unlike other products,
which breaks down over time. It’s also a byproduct from a renewable source.
Retains moisture and provides a
good environment
Coco coir is one of the most effective growing media for water retention out there. It can absorb up to 10x its weight
in water, meaning the roots of your plants will never get dehydrated. There’s also a lot of growing media for
roots to work through, promoting healthy root
development.
Coco Coir Growing Medium
Coir is a “soiless” growing media made from coconut husks. Sometimes coir is referred to as “coco peat” because of similarities in appearance to peat. Coir is widely used for seedlings, cuttings, and clones as well as cultivation of microgreens, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, blueberries, strawberries, roses, orchids, and more.
5kg Coir Block
This growing media comes from the mesocarp of the coconut and is intended for hydroponics and/or substrate. Homogeneous product that enables higher yield (expanded kilograms per liter) with a guaranteed quality. This product is available in blocks and briquettes.

Our Berry Blends are to be made to customer’s specifications.
Use our specialised Blueberry Premium Blend if the aeration for the roots of your plants plays a major role. It has a larger content of sod peat / white sphagnum peat and is coarser than our standard product to increase the air capacity.
Also suitable as a component to mix it with your soil to improve the aeration. Soil blend science has proved that adding coconut coir to the mix improves aerablity, drainage and moisture retention.
The pH and EC can be adjusted according to your special needs.

The SOG Trickling Filter™ is a waste water treatment process that has evolved from the need to treat small and sporadic amounts of domestic sewage. Unlike most conventional sewage treatment plants, the SOG filter makes use of earthworms, fungus and bacteria to treat sewage. By spreading the type of organism activity, a larger range of variable flow and load is possible.

Irish Sphagnum Peat
Peat Bed is a new and innovative poultry, dairy and dry stock cattle bedding material that has been specially formulated.
The Peat Bed products are made from super dry, super fine peat that is blended with a liming agent. The peat is harvested from peat fields using specially designed machinery.
The peat is then brought to our factory where it is screened to obtain the optimum particle size and then mixed with a liming agent. Peat Bed can be delivered in semi bulk bags.
