Description of ELIX12 PAMMAKARISTOS II, Workcamp: 14/08/13, 18+8

Nea Makri, Attica ENVI/MANU/DISA, 31/07/13

PARTNER ELIX is organizing during 2013 a series of workcamps in the framework of the ‘Lessons of Solidarity’ Project which aims to proactively support Greek Institutions in Attica hosting and caring for children with disabilities, developmental or psychosocial problems. The LESSONS OF SOLIDARITY Project is part of a three year initiative funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (www.SNF. org) in order to assist the increasing needs that such Institutions are facing in view of the socioeconomic crisis in Greece. SNF is one of the world’s leading international philanthropic organizations, making grants in the areas of arts and culture, education, health and medicine, and social welfare. The Foundation funds organizations and projects that exhibit strong leadership and sound management and are expected to achieve a broad, lasting and positive social impact. SNF also seeks actively to support projects that facilitate the formation of public-private partnerships as effective means for serving public welfare. ELIX will organize 2 workcamps at the Institution PAMMAKARISTOS, which hosts around 150 children and young adults (3 to 30 years old) with various disabilities, mainly autism, intellectual disabilities, as well as youngsters with social and other problems. Children and the young adults, depending on the type of disorder, age and needs attend the kindergarten, the workshops (pottery, catering, decoration-crafts, weaving & daily living) or are in foster home (all day centre). Some of the therapies and activities offered in PAMMAKARISTOS are logo therapy, ergo therapy, music therapy and others. As the Institution was established in 1953, it has great needs with regard to the renovation of the buildings and the surrounding environment.

WORK Volunteers participating in the 2 workcamps will undertake activities in the surrounding land of the Institution such as deforestation, gardening landscape, planting and growing vegetables, herbs and trees in the garden, etc. This is of special importance to the Institution and the children and the young adults hosted there as a great part of the food served to them daily comes from this garden. Volunteers will also help in renovation work eg. painting walls, minor repairs. Volunteers will work from Monday till Friday. ACCOMMODATION & FOOD Volunteers will be accommodated in the facilities of the Institution PAMMAKARISTOS. The accommodation is basic but adequate. There are toilets and common showers as well as cooking facilities. Sleeping bag and a carry mat are necessary. Two volunteers of the group every day in shifts will be responsible for maintaining the accommodation place clean as well as for preparing the meals of the day for the whole group.

Description of ELIX13 SHISTO I Shisto, Attica, ENVI/MANU/DISA, 02/07/13 15/07/13, 18+8 kcamp:

PARTNER ELIX is organizing during 2013 a series of workcamps in the framework of the LESSONS OF SOLIDARITY Project which aims to proactively support Greek Institutions in Attica hosting and caring for children with disabilities, developmental or psychosocial problems. In the framework of the project LESSONS OF SOLIDARITY ELIX will organize 3 workcamps at the Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre for children and people with disabilities KAAPAA SHISTOU, which is part of one of the oldest public welfare organization under the Greek Ministry of Labour, Social Insurance and Welfare. The Centre hosts around 32 children, teenagers, youngsters and adults ranging from 11 to 48 years old with serious and multiple disabilities, suffering mostly from mental retardation and/or physical disabilities, autism and other serious forms of intellectual disabilities. The Centre provides mainly rehabilitation work, training in life tasks such as personal hygiene, psychological and social support as well as therapies and activities that help them to reach their highest potential. As a public institution KAAPAA SHISTOU is one of the welfare organizations in Greece that has been seriously affected by the financial crisis and the heavy budget cuts. As a result KAAPAA SHISTOU has great needs with regard to the renovation of its facilities as well as the surrounding environment. WORK Volunteers participating in the 3 workcamps will undertake mainly renovation activities - both at the exterior and the interior of the facilities: such as painting rooms and walls, etc. and activities in the surrounding land of the Institution. Volunteers will work from Monday till Friday. ACCOMMODATION & FOOD Volunteers will be accommodated in the facilities of the Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre KAAPAA SHISTOU.

LOCATION & LEISURE TIME The Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre KAAPAA SHISTOU is located near the Industrial Park of Shisto, in the area of Skaramagas about 15 km from Athens centre and 8 km from Piraeus. The Centre is 6 km away from the town of Elefsina (the ancient historic town of Eleusis), near the Gulf of Elefsina, in the district of West Attica, northwest from Athens. Skaramagas is an area with shipyards with around 2.600 inhabitants. Elefsina, the nearest town, has 25.863 residents, and is about 20 km from Athens down town. There is a bus connection between Sxisto and Piraeus and a variety of transportation connections from Piraeus to Athens. Volunteers have many places around to visit in their free time (besides Athens and Piraeus), such as Elefsina and the island of Salamina. They may attend events organized during the period of their stay (concerts, festival, performances, etc.). Volunteers will discuss their free time activities with their camp leaders; together they are going to organize excursions and visits.
