PATTERN CUTTING: Use a sharp pair of fabric scissors or a rotary cutter to cut your pattern pieces. Then, use pattern weights or straight pins to secure the paper pattern pieces to your fabric. Just make sure to try and cut without lifting the pattern and fabric from your cutting table. (And don’t forget to transfer all of your markings before removing the paper!)

Spray baste or hand baste the foam stabilizer to the wrong side of both Bag Exterior pieces. Quilt if desired. Measure in 3” from each side of Bag Exteriors and make a mark. (This is for handle placement later.) To complete exterior, place Bag Exterior Pieces right sides together and sew the side and bottom seams with a ¼” seam referring to diagram. Box the corners of the exterior by bringing the bottom seam to meet the side seam (right sides together), and sewing a ¼” seam. Reinforce with a second line of stitching if desired. Do this for both corners. Step 6: Make pockets Sew (2) pocket charms together with ¼” seam, leaving a 2” opening on one side for turning. Trim corners, turn pocket out, and carefully push out corners. Turn raw edges of opening under and press entire pocket well. Repeat with remaining (2) pocket charms to make the second pocket.

Step 7: Assemble Lining

Position pocket as shown in diagram and pin to secure. (Make sure that the opening used to turn pocket out is at the bottom.) Topstitch the sides and bottom edge to secure the pocket in place. Repeat with remaining lining and pocket.

Sew lining pieces right sides together with a ¼” seam just as you did for exterior pieces, but leave a 6” opening along the bottom edge for turning. Box the corners as you did for exterior. (See exterior diagrams.)

Step 8: Assemble Handles With the charm squares reserved for the handles, piece together (2) 5-square strips with ¼” seams as shown. Press seams open to reduce bulk.

Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse interfacing to each handle strip.

Fold (1) handle strip in half lengthwise and press to make a crease. Unfold, then fold each long edge in to meet the crease. Press. Keeping long edges folded in, fold the entire handle in half lengthwise again so that folded edges meet. Press well and then pin. Sew a 1/8” topstitch down both long edges. Repeat with remaining 5-square handle strip to make (2) tote handles.

Step 9: Assemble Tote

Slide the Tote Exterior into the assembled lining so that right sides are facing and seams are aligned. Pin raw top edges together.

Taking care not to twist them, slide each handle in between the lining and the exterior. Remove pins as necessary. Match the raw edges of the handles with the raw top edge of the bag and line up the outer-most edges of the handles with the marked lines. Pin handles in place and re-pin the top edges of the exterior and lining. Using a ½” seam, stitch all around the bag opening. If desired, reinforce handles with extra lines of stitching.

Turn bag inside out through opening in lining. Topstitch the top edge of the bag. Sew the opening in the lining shut by hand. Your bag is complete!
