Thesaurus Linguae Latinae

We have recently subscribed to the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae database, a comprehensive, ongoing scholarly dictionary of ancient Latin from earliest times through AD 600. The contents of the electronic edition correspond to those of the complete printed version. The TLL currently contains all lexicon articles published between 1900-2008, the

The Library has recently received a significant collection of material on World War I and related conflicts. Deposited by John Cawthorn on behalf of the 1926 Foundation, it contains primary source material as well as current publications, and aims to cover both the more mainstream aspects of World War I such as the Western Front, and associated conflicts including the Russian Revolution, the Polish-Soviet War and conflicts in Turkey. The collection will relate usefully to existing holdings in the Main Library's print collections and to material in Special Collections. Titles will be listed in SAULCAT , and further information is available on theRussell Cawthorn Collection website.

Cataloguing of Virginia Woolf/Hogarth Press collection complete!

The Library has been working for some time with the School of English to develop a Virginia Woolf and Hogarth Press Research Collection . A number of rare and important first editions were withdrawn from the normal circulating collections where they had been placed when acquired many years ago, and given a safer new home in Special Collections. Work then began on purchasing clean editions of titles we did not hold. First editions of Two Stories (1917) and Kew Gardens (1919) were acquired last year, for example, and Monday or Tuesday (1921)was bought at this year's Edinburgh Book Fair. Acting Rare Books Librarian Daryl Green recently finished cataloguing this new collection, and the picture emerging is of a very useful resource for Woolf and Bloomsbury scholars. A researcher can now see all the items we have which were printed or published by the Hogarth Press, and which of these were published under the auspices of Virginia Woolf herself. Also included are the first American editions of some of Woolf's works, some with their original dust-jackets designed by Vanessa Bell. The collection will not be static, and the Library will be looking out for more good condition first editions coming on the market. Needless to say, donations too would be very welcome!

Special Collections Acquisition

The Special Collections Department has recently started to build a new collection which links both the Rare Books and Photographic Archives worlds. The Photographic Books Collection , developed in partnership with the School of Art History, will comprise books heavily illustrated with photographs, and seminal books about photgraphic techniques or processes. Recent acquisitions have been made in support of this collection (see Dr Natalie Adamson's two posts on our blog) and are now starting to be added to SAULCAT.

TheJournal of Visualized Experiments, to which we have recently subscribed, is a PubMed-indexed video journal devoted to the video publication of biological research. Explaining experimental techniques and procedures via a combination of peer-reviewed video and text, it provides access to an extensive range of videos filmed in research laboratories at leading academic institutions including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Berkeley and Yale.

Our access is to the General Collection, and recent videos include A Fluorescent Screening Assay for Identifying Modulators of GIRK Channels and Epidural Intracranial Pressure Measurement in Rats using a Fiber-optic Pressure transducer . Enjoy!

Free books online! Directory of Open Access Books launched.

The Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) has just been launched with over 750 academic books available under an Open Access licence. The Directory contains a wide range of subjects, with a particularly strong presence in History and Social Sciences. DOAB ensures that books are available to readers with as few restrictions as possible, and requires that they are peer reviewed prior to publication. DOAB is a service of the OAPEN Foundation, and policies have been developed in conjunction with the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) .
