TheUniversity Library is now in receipt of funds which will allow us toinvestigate a range of open access options, seek feedback from ouracademic community and prepare for the transition towards open access. The Library is in the process of communicating the plan for use of thesefunds with Directors of Research in all Schools.

To find out if you can make your article open access, [email protected].

There will be further funds available from April 2013, which will allow usto implement the new RCUK policy on open access and pay for 'Gold'open access for RCUK-funded outputs. Dr Kate Rudy from the School of Art History will deliver the Friends'Spring Lecture entitled, 'Dirty Books: How to Spot a MedievalBestseller.' Followed by tea/coffee - all welcome!

    The Martyrs'... Reading Rooms!

The University purchased the Martyrs' Church in North Street from theChurch of Scotland last summer.

The church will give us additional Library reading rooms. Planning isunderway to refurbish the building and open it for use later this year.

The main church space will become a Research Reading Room, for useby Postgraduate Research students and academic staff. There will be areference collection within the church, and a number of journals for Artsresearchers.

We will use the adjoining Church Hall as a Special Collections ReadingRoom, replacing the current temporary Reading Room at the Library

Annexe on the North Haugh. Our longer term plans for SpecialCollections are for the whole facility to be provided under one roof in aredevelopment of the semi-basement Ground Floor of the Main Library. The Martyrs' Church Hall will however provide a very pleasanttemporary Special Collections Reading Room while planning andbuilding work on the Main Library proceeds.

The inscription appears on a copy ofThe Flying Carpet(London:Partridge & Co., 1925), an anthology of stories and poems for children. This beautifully illustrated volume includes contributions by ThomasHardy, G. K. Chesterton, A. A. Milne, and others. Barrie's contribution isa short story entitled, "Neil and Tintinnabulum." The April 1926 issue ofThe Elementary English Review(via JSTOR) had this to say about theanthology: "The outstanding story is Barrie's 'Neil and Tintinnabulum.'Boys who enjoy 'Stalky and Co.' will like it, but it is really for grown-ups.In fact, the author calls it 'An Interlude for Parents' ... It will bear readingand re-reading just now when we parents are too prone to give ourchildren so much direction and guidance in school, clubs, camps, andspecial lessons that they have no time to 'just grow.'"

More information about the book and the inscription can be found in theSpecial Collections blog Echoes from the Vault.
