  • Library Newsletter Continued from page 1 Prof Steve Ching, University Librarian, shared with the audience OAPS’s progress. He has been extremely pleased with the increase in the number of both CityU departments joining OAPS and overseas partner institutions. He mentioned that usage statistics also show that in the past two years, i.e. since OAPS papers started being archived in CityU IR, on the average each OAPS paper has been accessed 23 times per year. This access rate is relatively higher when compared to some ebooks. He expressed, ‘This encouraging figure shows that OAPS has received very positive feedback and support from the University community at large since its launch.’

Some Facts about OAPS and IR

OAPS Collection is one of the Library’s Digital Library Initiatives and Institutional Repository Projects. It is stored in CityU IR along with the Final Year Projects, CityU Electronic Theses and Dissertations, and Student Works with External Awards. A study conducted by Prof Ng Sik Hung from the Department of Applied Social Studies and the Library last year reveals that the IR enjoys a high usage by the 116 students surveyed. About three-quarters of the respondents have used it at least once, and over 90% of them would recommend it to others. CityU Institutional Repository: http://dspace.cityu.edu.hk/

Showcasing CityU Art Talent ‘Sharing the Experience of Art’ was first co-organized by the Library and Human Resources Office in July 2006 with the aim of cultivating greater interest in art for whole-person development within the University community. Receiving enthusiastic support and contributions from CityU members, the Library and Human Resources have continued to jointly organize the event this year. The eight contributors featured this year were: Mr Rodolfo S Canete Jr. (Dept of English and Communication), Mr Franky Chan (son of Mr P K Chan, Facilities Management Office), Prof Cheng Pei-kai (Director of the Chinese Civilisation Centre), Prof Richard Ho (Acting President), Ms Ester So (Library), Mr Raymond Wong (Division of Building Science & Technology), Mr Sunny Wong (Communication Office), and Lady Ivy Wu. On March 6, a Sharing Session of the titled event was held to provide an opportunity for the contributors to share and exchange their insights and experiences in art as a lifelong interest. The session was moderated by Prof Zhang Longxi from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics. The Sharing Session was followed by the Opening Ceremony of an Exhibition of Art Works by Members of CityU Community 2008. Prof Richard Ho, Acting President, Dr Ellen Ko, Vice-President for Administration, Dr J T Yu, Chief Information officer, Mrs Eva Ng, Acting Director of Human Resources, and Prof Steve Ching, University Librarian, were invited to officiate the Opening Ceremony and mark the launch of the Exhibition. Library Forum: ‘Learning Commons – A Closer Look’ To cope with today’s pedagogy, cater for diverse user preferences, and prepare for the new 3-3-4 academic structure, the Library has established the Learning Commons last year. In order to collect users’ feedbacks and facilitate effective communication between users and the Library, we have organized a Library Forum on 19 February 2008. With the theme of “Learning Commons – A Closer Look”, the forum serves as an important platform for users to give us their suggestions and comments on the renovation work we have just done, and their expectation on the work we will undertake in the coming summer break.

At this year’s forum, we invited Dr J T Yu, Chief Information Officer of City University of Hong Kong to give opening remarks for the forum. Dr Yu indicated that teaching pedagogy and students’ behavior have been changing rapidly in the past two decades, and it is essential for the Library to re-plan its space and service model to satisfy the needs of today’s users.

The University Librarian Professor Steve Ching shared with our users the brand new model of space and stack management adopted by the Library, while our Associate Librarian Ms Diana Chan gave an introduction on the new facilities and services provided by the Learning Commons. In addition, Mr Mark Chan, Consultant of the Library Renovation Project, shared his ideas and insights on the upcoming renovation projects which are planned to take place in this summer and 2009. Furthermore, with nearly a hundred participants, the Library successfully gathered a lot of valuable feedbacks for future improvement at the Q&A session. Students voicing out their concerns and thoughts in the Q&A session.

An exhibition was concurrently held at the venue, displaying many comments from the University community on the newly established Learning Commons. In order to collect these data, the Library conducted face-to-face interviews with over a hundred faculty and students before the forum. These valuable comments had made great contributions to creating a brand new experience of outside classroom learning. With all the inputs, we believe that we can construct an improved learning environment that meets the requirements of today’s library users. Talk by Dean of USC Libraries Ms Catherine Quinlan, Dean of USC Libraries of the University of Southern California, gave a talk entitled ‘The Essential Library: A Vision for Academic Libraries at the University of Southern California’ on April 11, 2008 in the Library. The problems faced by the USC Libraries were addressed, and solutions, visions, and future directions were presented. Quoting from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s ‘Essay on Books’ from Society and Solitude (1870), Ms Quinlan compared the library to an ‘enchanter,’ that the readers are constantly overwhelmed by the enormous volumes of books, both intrigued and confused about how and where to start looking. To improve information literacy, three imperatives were offered: 1) To develop focused collections and ensure ready access to existing resources; 2) To use appropriate technology to provide an intuitive, robust, and flexible environment that supports learning, teaching, and research; and 3) To use expertise to provide service and help students navigate the information landscape. The talk was well-received by all the professional staff of the Library.

Joint Project Finale Conference Attracts Renowned Speakers

CityU and CUHK will jointly host a conference entitled ‘Emerging Paradigms for Academic Library E-Book Acquisition and Use: Trends, Challenges and Opportunities’ on 3 June 2008. The Conference is a closing event of a joint project ERALL (Electronic Resources Academic Library Link) participated by all eight UGC-funded libraries. After 2 years of collaborative efforts, about 16,000 titles of ebooks from reputable publishers such as Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Blackwell and Oxford were acquired for shared access. The Project does not only enhance the ebook collection of participating libraries, but also generates valuable collaborative experience, making wider-scale cooperation more feasible in the future. The Conference will feature two keynote speakers who will address the issues in the development and trends of ebooks, coordinated development of ebook consortium and the multitude of issues pertaining to ebook licensing. Our keynote speakers are current leaders in landscape-level consortium initiatives: Mr Tom Sanville, Executive Director of OhioLINK and Mr Andrew Wells, University Librarian of the University of New South Wales, President of the Council of Australian University Librarians, and the former Chairperson of CEIRC (CAUL Electronic Information Resources Committee).

    Mr Andrew Wells from CAUL

    Mr Tom Sanville from OhioLINK

The Conference will bring together librarians who will share their experiences in acquiring and using ebooks including collection development, publicity and promotion, user instruction and training, usage, curriculum integration, etc. Leading vendors and publishers will also share their perspectives and thoughts, and the new focus being brought into the market place. A pre-conference seminar ‘Collaborative Collection Development and Consortial Licensing of E-Resources’ will be hosted by CityU as a prelude to the main program with an aim to foster more in-depth exploration of the topics related to the current trend in collection development and consortial purchasing of ebooks. Experimenting UHF RFID - From Laboratory to Library

In 2007, the Library and the Wireless Communications Research Centre (RCW) successfully applied for the Applied Research Grant of the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) to start off a research on the possibility of using UHF (Ultra High Frequency) RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to develop cutting-edge automated library applications.

After 12 months' R&D efforts and with funding and support from the CIO, the Library is now applying the research results to an experiment in the Semi-Closed Collection as a pilot test with users' participation. ‘EasyCheck’ machines, ‘EasyReturn’ units and detection gates, all powered by UHF RFID and in the beta version, now enable users to borrow and return the some 10,000 short loan items in the Collection by themselves.

Results of the pilot test will be compared to those of another pilot project to be carried out in the CD/DVD Collection by early June with HF RFID applications acquired from a commercial vendor. The tests are important as they will affect the Library's future RFID plan. Therefore, your participation is important.

Do come to our Semi-Closed Collection, try out the new ‘EasyCheck System’ and let our colleagues or service ambassadors know your views and comments.
