LIBRARY NOMINATION

Thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs.

Chan Shu Yin, the library received additional financial support for future

development and announced its opening as Chan Shu Yin Library on the school

open day of March 9, 2013. With the sum, an attic floor will be added into the

current library.

LIBRARY SYSTEM

It took the library team five months to switch completely from Oliver to

Destiny, a user friendly automation system. Not only does it provide smooth

support for cataloging and collection development, but it allows our students

to manage their library accounts outside the campus and provides access to millions of web resources selected by

librarians.

READING GALLERIES

In the beginning of the school year the library team put a lot effort into

reopening the three reading galleries on the first, second and third floor. In addi-

tion to selecting and labeling a number of appropriate new books, we reorganized

the galleries in order to make them more accessible to students. Also, thirty primary student librarians were trained

on maintaining the reading galleries.

The development of the reading galleries

on the first and second floor has significantly improved primary students’

access to reading materials by providing

suitable books to them right outside of their classrooms. They are encouraged

to take advantage of the resources any time they want.

FLOATING LIBRARIAN

In addition to librarians working at the counter, we now have a librarian floating

around the shelves and computers to help students more efficiently during the peak

hour – primary recess time. This arrangement is well received by the

students and signaled that more library instruction is necessary for all students. WEB SITE

The establishment of the library website

has greatly integrated electrical learning resources for both student and teachers.

It is also used as a channel for communicating library activities to the

CKY community.

INTEGRATION OF CHINESE AND ENGLISH NON-FICTION

As all students at CKY are taught bilingually from Year 1 through Year 12,

the library decided to file Chinese and English Non-fiction books together,

hoping to make students aware that information is equally useful from books

in both Chinese and English. Fiction books are still shelved separately.

PICTURE BOOKS

When we needed to put together a picture book

collection, who do you think were the best judges? Some Year 1 - 2 students offered their genius help during the

process of setting up the debut exhibition of our fine picture book collection for the school open day.

STOCKTAKING

Prior to our transition to Destiny, the library team

conducted a thorough stocktaking. During the process,

the library discovered many missing books and identified lots of valuable resources to add into the regular collection.

LIBRARY SEATING AREA

As more students came to the library during their free

study period, the library added 16 more seats to its

original 74 seats so that our library now can hold up to 90 students.

POLICY DEVELOPMENT

After the introduction of the Code of Conduct, the

library team has also prepared a replacement fee policy to deal with issues of overdue and lost library resources

in an effort to teach our students to be more responsible.

RECYCLED ART

Students now have one more reason to visit the library

– to appreciate the recycled art work exhibition set up by our primary students. If you see robots on top of

primary shelves, don’t be surprised!

YELLOW CALL NUMBERS

To minimize shelving mistakes, the library changed the

call number stickers on all primary books to yellow while

continuing to use white stickers for all other books.

SELF-PRINTING

The library advocated self-printing for students from the first day

of the school year and finally the IT Department helped us to set up this service. The Year 9 - 12 students are now very happy to

print and make photocopies independently, while the library staff is able to focus more on library work.

PARENTING CORNER

Thanks to the parent helpers, we rolled out our parenting corner

collection on May 9, 2013, which is dedicated to books on parenting, education, and family.

MAGAZINES, MAGAZINES!

To promote a variety of reading resources, the library team spent six weeks to add all current and back issues of our periodical

collection into our library database so that all students and staff members can borrow back issues to read.

Year 1 and 2

Chutes and Ladders Game Through the modified Snakes and

Ladders, we briefed all children on the library’s layout, rules, and books that they may like.

Library Account After the library system transition, we

also gave lessons to all children on accessing their accounts at home and using the library catalogue to search for

books.

Year 3 and 4

Library Research All students learned how to manage

their library accounts, find resources for their projects, and organize their findings

with a resource list, which can be accessed anytime and anywhere.

Year 5

Graduation Projects Students were taught the basic rules of MLA citation style in Chinese and

English, respectively. They also learned to use Cite.com, an online citation-making tool. In addition,

students received instruction in locating relevant resources for their research

using EBSCO Kids Search and Encyclopedia Britannica.

Year 7 and 8

Science Symposium The librarian walked students through

remotely accessible databases subscribed by Hong Kong Public Library, such as EBSCOhost, GREENR and Sci-

ence in Context, in supporting the school-wide event. Students were

shown how to use advanced search function and carried out effective

searches on their own.

Project Management In addition, students were introduced to

NoodleTools, a comprehensive platform for personal research project

management. In addition, they were able to create projects, add note cards, and

make bibliographies.

Year 10

Graduation Essay Students were shown how to find relevant information in the library and in databases such as EBSCOhost and

Questia when researching for their graduation essays. Similarly to Year 8,

Year 10 familiarized themselves with NoodleTools with guidance from our

teacher-librarians.

Year 11 and 12

Extended Essay The library created a MLA booklet, and

shared it with Year 11 - 12 students in order to prepare them for the Extended Essay. In addition, they were introduced

to methods to avoid plagiarism from the very beginning of the writing process.

Also, students were shown NoodleTools with the aim of helping

them organizing their research process.

Students were also presented with

examples of EE topics, and learned how to select a topic, and construct a good research question in March 2013.

In June, the library conducted another round of workshops to make sure that

students are able to access and utilize ample resources easily both at school

and home.

| Parent Volunteers

Since its foundation, CKY has been supported by a dedicated team of Parent Volunteers who give their time generously as they value the important services the library has been providing. This year parents volunteered 2604 hours,

enabling CKY library to provide diverse collections and services on a daily basis. Volunteers were welcome and recognized at the beginning of year luncheon.

| Reading mum and dad

We have a devoted team of Reading Mums and Dads who provide readalouds to Year 1 and 2 students all year long, totaling 87 storytelling sessions. Many students are always excited about the storytelling session and we look forward

to organizing more interesting reading activities in the future.

| Professional work placements

We have also started providing librarian internship. So far, we have had 2

students from the Higher Diploma Programme in Library and Information Management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and 7 students from a similar programme at the Hong Kong University, totaling 811 hours of work

experience. It was a mutually beneficial experience for all and we look forward to accepting more trainee librarians in the future.

| CAS

We accepted Yr 11 students to work for the CKY Library as their CAS. They

contributed 135 hours to CKY Library this year. They shelved books, supervised circulation and computer services, and created displays. Besides

providing extra support, they benefited personally by gaining a better understanding of CKY library collections, locations and operations.

| Student Librarians This year is our first year to accept Year 3 students joining the student librarian team. We have total 48 student librarians from both primary and secondary. They provide invaluable support and contributed over 390 hours.

LIBRARY WORKING EXPERIENCE

Total Volunteer Hours

3969 hours was donated to CKY library service this year. This is equivalent to more

than TWO full-time staff members for a whole school year! Way to go CKY!!

Final Reflection

As we close this school year we feel exhausted but

satisfied. We thought that transferring to Destiny

would be a job too difficult to finish, as the people at

Oliver didn’t want us to leave and didn’t provide any

technical help. The library team had to work

extremely hard to get all the book data out and sent

to Destiny for conversion. In the end, not only did

we finish the transition, but in the end we also had a

number of other notable accomplishments as you

have read in this booklet. In addition, feedback from

teachers, students, and parents is very positive

about this transition.

It’s important to reflect on all we have achieved,

consider what we could do better and set new goals

for the coming year. We welcome Ms Tammy Ng

back from her maternity leave (please see the “new”

face on our team!). Ms Niu will focus on DP student

needs while overseeing all operations of the library.

Ms Moore will take care of the Year 6 to 10 and

Ms Ng will work with Year 1 to 5.

Exciting news for the coming year:

● A lower primary library will be set up on the first floor to make it easier for Year 1 and 2

students to access library resources, opposed to the long journey they are currently taking to

the Main Library located on the 6th Floor;

● Our school will send students to join the international school section of the Battle of the

Books in an effort to promote reading among students;

● An audio book section with approximately 200 fine titles will be added to the collection to

help our student to improve their pronunciation and to enjoy the beauty of audio literature.

Art work given by Ms Susan Eaddy, one of the visiting authors to

CKY in the school year 2012 –2013.
