Matt’s Musings JAM, our Sunday kids club, is open to all children aged 4-14. We have fun, play games, make crafts and sing songs. Please contact Chris Billing (01603 783992) for more details. Our monthly Family Service is suitable for all ages and includes activities for children.

“Fresh Ground”, our monthly cafe-discussion evening is looking at difficult questions of faith. This month’s, on Thursday 4 April will be asking “Did Jesus really rise from the dead?” and we will be unpacking the evidence for the resurrection. We also have regular Bible Study and Prayer groups, which gladly welcome new members.

Our new building is now well under way, and we look forward to it being completed by early July! ST HELEN’S CATHOLIC CHURCH The Three C’s: This month the chummy coffee, cake and chat is on April 3rd from 10:30 - 11:30. The cost is only 70p at the “Old Original”: proceeds go to charity. We look forward to seeing all the regulars and greeting new guests at the Three C’s in the Narthex at St. Helen’s.

A social club for “Senior Citizens” over 60 from 11:30 – 16:00, with a buffet lunch at 12:30; £2 per person includes homespun entertainment and a raffle. “Children’s Church”: looks at the themes in our weekly Mass and works towards First Communion. It takes place in school term-time during the Parish Mass on Saturday evening at 17:30. Our “Children’s Church” is popular: perhaps because our catechists are qualified teachers and are all CRB-checked. Rooms available for hire: St Helen’s has rooms available for small bona fide meetings and gatherings of up to 30 people; several village organisations meet here on a regular basis. Facilities for preparing light snacks and hot drinks are available (you bring your own refreshments). Centrally situated with excellent car parking. Please call 01603 782758 for further details. MOTHERS’ UNION – WROXHAM BENEFICE BRANCH We will be very pleased to hear Mr Geoff Rose, one of the Bevin Boys, when he comes to speak to us on Tuesday, 16th April. The Bevin Boys (named after Ernest Bevin, who was Minister of Labour and National Service in the wartime coalition Government) were young British men conscripted to work in the coalmines of the UK, because so many experienced coalminers had been conscripted into the armed forces. Nearly 48,000 Bevin Boys performed vital service in the mines between December 1943 and 1948 and we look forward to hearing about Mr Rose’s experiences. Everyone (not just members) is very welcome to join us at 10:30 am at St. Helen’s. Please contact Suzanne Barnett (782002) or Val Ovenden (782466) for more details, or to arrange lifts. FRIENDS OF WROXHAM CHURCH President: Right Reverend Graham James, Bishop of Norwich Charity no: 1107913 Our film for March is “ANNA KARENINA” – showing on Saturday 20th April at 2:30pm and 7:00pm in Wroxham Church Hall. Written by Tom Stoppard from the novel by Leo Tolstoy, the film stars Keira Knightley and Jude Law. Set in late 19th-century Russia high-society, the aristocrat Anna Karenina enters into a life-changing affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. Our “EVENING OF WORDS & MUSIC” at 7:00pm on 18th May in Wroxham Church Hall should be a really enjoyable, relaxed occasion, with a feast of entertainment provided by several well-known local figures. Cheese and wine will also be served during the evening. Tickets at £7.50 are now on sale – see the poster on page or for more details please contact Di Stagg on 01603 784214 or [email protected]. If you would like to join The Friends, get involved or have ideas for fundraising activities, please contact Val Ovenden on 01603 782466 or email [email protected].

HORNING COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL Throughout the first half of the Spring Term, Class 2 have been working with the National Trust on an Energy saving project, called Energy Busters. They monitored the school’s energy over 3 weeks, encouraged staff and children to switch off appliances and lights when not in use, and took regular electricity meter readings. Under their careful eye, we managed to make a considerable saving on our consumption; as a result we are eligible to apply for funding to make improvements to our building to make it even more energy efficient. Class 2’s visit to the catering section of Norwich City College exceeded all our expectations; the staff and students made our children feel both welcomed and valued, and have given them the information and skills necessary to open their Parents Café at the end of the term. Patrons of the Debut Restaurant and College Cafés were intrigued to be served by Primary School children and very complimentary about the service received. We were as always extremely proud of all the children, whose behaviour was exemplary; who knows we may have kindled an interest in catering in some of our children, perhaps tomorrow’s great chef in our midst. Class 1 had a very successful visit to A J Meale & Sons at Wayford Bridge. They were shown how the seed is planted and what is involved in nurturing it until it becomes large enough to be sold in the shop. The children have all been very busy sowing seeds in readiness to sell to parents at the end of the term. If you have young children aged 2 and above, and are looking for quality early years provision, we currently have spaces within our pre-school. Children are eligible for 15

hours funded early years provision in the term after their 3rd birthday. However, funding may be available for some 2-year old places - please contact the school for further details on opening times and availability. Are you interested in children’s education, do you have some spare time? We are looking to recruit some community Governors at the school. If you would like more information, please contact the school on the telephone number or email below. We are once again collecting supermarket vouchers and Nestle Boxtops tokens; thank you to everyone in our local community for your continuing support of our school. APRIL GARDENING TIPS I always love this time of year and there is plenty to do in the garden. Nights are lighter and temperatures are rising. Now is the chance to spring clean your borders and keep on top of those weeds. Give them a light feed or mulch around your shrubs, trees, roses, evergreens and climbers (especially clematis) and lightly fork it in. If you have not pruned your roses, do it now. Cut out dead, diseased and weak growth first and reduce strong stems to an outward facing bud. It is your last chance to split perennials, but be careful not to damage fresh shoots and then mulch around them. Your lawns should be growing well by now, keep trimming them regularly. If you have a few thin patches, fluff up the area with a rake, over seed and cover lightly with some sifted soil. If you have moss and have not treated it, do not worry, you can incorporate it with the spring fertiliser containing iron. Do this in the middle of the month. There are some reasonably priced 4 in 1 brands at your Garden Centre. If you like fresh salad and vegetable crops, now is the time to get busy. Broad beans must go in now before it is too late. Plant your potatoes; if you have not much room try three in a large container. Plant out your onion sets and shallots; if you have a problem with birds flicking them out of the ground, put them in cell trays and plant a little later as plug plants. Also, it is time for carrots, beetroot and peas. Sow short rows so you have a succession of produce. With salad crop: lettuce, radish and spring onion, sow short rows or, once again, put in a container pot. Sow hardy herbs like parsley, fennel, dill or coriander. If you like to grow bedding plants, sow early this month, under glass. There are a fantastic variety of flowers these days, so try something new. My fish all survived the winter and are swimming around very happily. I will start feeding them towards the end of the month. Divide pond plants, keep the best and replant into pond planters; clear any remaining debris and leaves. Do not forget to keep that deterrent up to keep the hungry heron away. Whatever you do this April in your garden enjoy it and do it safely. If you would like to meet fellow keen gardeners, come and join us at one of our Garden Club Meetings and chat about your successes and failures over a cup of tea. Michael Ottaway - Chairman HOVETON & DISTRICT CONSERVATIVE COFFEE CLUB Our next meeting at The Hotel Wroxham will be on Thursday 25th April at 10:30am, when we shall be looking forward to a very interesting talk on Protection of The Broads. Contact Tel. No: 01603 783490.

BELAUGH WOMEN’S FRIENDLY CIRCLE Tuesday 2nd April, “Coffee Morning”. This is the Tuesday after Easter Monday, 10:30am in Belaugh Old School. Hoping to have a “get together” with coffee/scones and chat, do join us. WROXHAM & HOVETON LIONS CLUB Firstly, may I wish you all an enjoyable Easter and by the time you read this, Spring should be well and truly on the way. This is the time of year when we are a little bit in limbo, preparing such things as the Precinct Tombola and the Mobile Tombola, but not quite at the point where we can get going. However there is a lot going on behind the scenes, organising this year’s Motor Show on 10th & 11th August at its new venue of the Norfolk Show Ground. After the inclement weather and the quieter winter period, the Charity Shop trade is now beginning to pick up and our recent sale has been very successful. The Craft fair in March was well attended and our ladies in the catering were kept busy. Even yours truly donned a pinny and was chief washer-up for the day! As you may recall the bad weather resulted in the cancellation of our January Furniture Sale. This means our sale on Sunday 7th April will be the first of the year. As usual we have a good selection of items at very reasonable prices, but make sure you get there early to grab a bargain. Doors open at 10am sharp. Weather permitting, we are hoping to open the precinct tombola for the Spring Bank holiday. On the social front, members attended the Lions Clubs District 105EA Convention at the Holiday Inn Norwich (North) between 15th & 17th March and had great fun on the Friday, when 10 of us took part in the fancy dress evening, themed “In the Court of King James 1st”. Suitably dressed and with the aid of a mock-up of their ship “Mayflower”, the group performed a “rap” version of the Pilgrim Father’s story. We all looked very fetching in our costumes, but they were definitely not the sort of thing you would wear walking down Prince of Wales Road on a Saturday night!! For anyone wishing to see the spectacle, we hope to place photographs on our website www.wroxhamandhovetonlions.org as soon as we can prise them (with the whnegatives!!) off the Convention photographer. This month’s £100 Charity Shop Draw Prize goes to the Norfolk Zipper Club, which was nominated by W. Paisley, who donated items to our shop. We will always welcome new members, so if you have a few hours to spare occasionally and would like to make a difference in your local community, whist having some fun, why not give our President, Lion Mike Clipston a ring on 01603429380, or alternatively contact our Membership Chairperson Lion Suzanne Barnett on 01603 782002. If you prefer, come along to one of our meetings, which are held in the Broadland Youth and Community Centre at 8pm on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month. We are a friendly bunch and you will be made very welcome.

WATER BIRD RESCUE “SOOTY”, the black swan, was treated for an infection in one eye. The problem caused irreversible partial sight loss, to which the wildlife casualty is adapting in recuperation. (Swan Helpline 01603 782626) THE PROBUS CLUB OF BROADLANDS The Probus Club of Broadlands meets on the last Wednesday of the month. The next meeting will be held on 27th March at the Masonic Hall in Wroxham, commencing at noon. At the March meeting we had a presentation by Chris Green on the subject of Roys of Wroxham. Chris has been in retail all of his working life and has worked for Tesco and Waitrose before moving to Roys in 1995. The Company is now managed by the third generation of the Roy family with Ed Roy currently the Managing Director and Peter Roy its Chairman. They are supported by 17 senior managers with 850 staff in total. Their turnover is £50 million p.a. The Company began trading in 1895 as grocers and drapers in Coltishall before moving to Hoveton, where its head office remains. It was on a visit to the States in the 60’s that Fred Roy saw Wal-Mart’s operation and decided to bring the concept of out-of-town shopping to Norfolk. The first Roys branch was opened in North Walsham in 1990 and in the early 90’s a store was opened in Eaton. The Eaton store was sold in 1995 to Waitrose and the proceeds were used to develop the variety store in Hoveton. Stores were subsequently opened in Magdalen Street and in Beccles. The latest acquisitions are the petrol station in Wroxham and Highway Nurseries, both of which are doing well. In the mid-90’s Roys suffered trying times with the occurrence of two dramatic fires in their Hoveton variety store and the death of Fred Roy. The nature of Roys operation has changed dramatically over recent years. It is no longer a just a discount store. Customers’ expectations have changed; they now want a more sophisticated retail experience. Significant improvements have been in the management of logistics and back-of-house. The warehousing at Pinefields adopts a fast track system where, following delivery, goods are picked and despatched in the shortest possible time with the objective that there be no residue of stock left to be stored. IT systems run the warehouses and the tills and provide sales information to the buyers based in Hoveton. Roys are looking to expand their multi-channel retail. They are developing their internet sales via their own web-site, an e-bay shop and Amazon. The Company has a policy of slow evolution, where flexibility takes precedence over bureaucracy. Their reputation is more important to them than profit. There is a high degree of both customer satisfaction and staff loyalty. Roys seem to have found a recipe for success and despite the changing nature of retail, they are likely to be part of the Norfolk scene for many years to come. The Club is actively seeking new members and those interested should contact either Richard Williams on 01603 720184 or Ian Anderson on 01603 737298. We hope to see you at our next meeting.

WROXHAM BURE VALLEY ROTARY CLUB May we firstly wish a Happy Easter to all our readers. Our next event is nearly upon us – the combined sponsored walk with Macmillan Cancer support along the Bure Valley Railway on the week-end of 20th/21st April. The arrangement is for all registration fees to go to Macmillan and then for the sponsorship money raised to be shared. So if you would like to take part and raise money, both for Macmillan and for Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club’s selected local and international charities, go to the special web site www.bvw2013.co.uk. When you register be sure to put Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club on the web form in the appropriate place, choose your preferred day and walk direction, and that is all there is to it – apart from getting sponsors and completing the actual walk! We look forward to seeing as many as possible over the week-end and if you want to support us, but do not want to walk, we are also running a barbeque at Hoveton and Wroxham station on the Bure Valley Railway both days, so come and see us there. The tractor for the Faith project in Zambia has now arrived at its destination and has already started to be put to use, helping cultivate the 600 acres at the Faith project centre – a massive thank you to all who made this wonderful project possible. The Schools Technology tournament took place at Broadland School, Hoveton on 15th March, with almost 100 young people from various local schools competing to complete a technical task of differing difficulty depending upon age from a range of supplied materials. Full results next time. Looking further ahead, we will be running our popular summer dance again, date has now been confirmed as 29th June, so make a diary note now and we will have more information next time. As ever, there is a lot going on as we continue to implement the Rotary motto of “service above self” and if our lively social group sounds good to you, we are looking to build our membership for 2013. We welcome both men and women from all walks of life, so if you are interested in joining us, please come along to one of our meetings, where guests are always welcome, we meet Monday evenings from 7pm. Our Meetings are currently taking place at Wroxham Barns restaurant. Visit our “new look” web-site on www.wroxhamrotary.org.uk for more information, or contact our president, David Prichard on 01692 631544. WROXHAM WI I am hoping that by the time you read this, the snow will all be gone. As you know, this article has to written before we have our meeting and I came really unstuck as our January meeting had to be cancelled, due to the snow. Our busy February meeting more than made up for that, as not only were all the subscriptions collected, but we also heard all about life in Medieval England as our speaker was Mike Wabe, complete with chain mail, helmets and swords. At the time of writing we are looking forward to our March meeting, at which

we are due to see Peter Longstaff paint a picture using his feet (and presumably a paint brush and paints). We would all like to congratulate our 10 Pin Bowling team, who made it the final and came second out of a league of 35! Very well done to them. Our April Craft and Chat is due to be at Moira Holden’s House on Thursday 11th at 2pm - please let one of the committee know if you are able to come, it makes catering much easier. Our April WI meeting will be on Wednesday 17th at 2:30pm, when our speaker will be Georgette Vale telling us how to make 3D Flowers. As always visitors and new members are very welcome. Jenny Walkinshaw. HOVETON & DISTRICT WI March heralds the start of spring and the blossoming of new life in our gardens. Daffodils start to appear in abundance and cause us to reminisce about past gifts to our mother’s at this time of year. Daffodils are also the national flower of Wales and many of their countrymen celebrated St David’s Day on 1st March. So it was apt that our speaker was Jon Read on the subject of “The Red Dragon & Tylwyth Teg”. He gave us a potted history of his holidays in North Wales and his enduring love of the area, which has lasted for fifty years. We were given a route map off the main tourist trail, and anecdotes of humorous incidents and the genuine hospitality that he encountered. This was followed by a short slide presentation showing the natural beauty of North Wales. Our meeting next month will be on Wednesday 3rd April starting at 2:15pm at Hoveton Village Hall. The speaker will be Christine Humphries, who will give us an insight into “Life in a Norfolk Family in 1900.” May I also remind members that any final pledges or promises to our auction can be brought along to our April meeting. New members and visitors are very welcome. For further information please ring 01603 783387. HOVETON BOWLS CLUB The Bowling Club will open on Saturday 13th April 2013 with our usual roll up starting at 2.30pm. A membership fee is due at the beginning of the season; we have a full programme for 2013 with League matches played in the afternoons and internal competitions, on Saturdays. Friendly roll ups Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and Social events in the Village Hall. We will hold our OPEN DAY on 20th April from 10:30am until 4:30pm, so interested parties can come see and try the game. Bowls is a great sport; it provides gentle exercise and enhances your social life. Adults of all ages are very welcome so come along and have a try. Bowls equipment will be provided; just bring flat soled shoes or bowling shoes. Advice and tuition will be given by members on the day. For further information, contact secretary, Carole Yallop on 01603 812180 or the Club Captain, Mr Ernie Rogers on 01603 782358.

BARTON HOUSE RAILWAY 01603 782008; www.bartonhouserailway.org.uk; [email protected] CELEBRATING 50 YEARS After our Annual Meeting in February, the mood changed dramatically for the Annual Dinner on Saturday 2nd March. As is the custom the venue was held Barton House and hosted by Peter Bower (General Manager). This is always a very relaxed and enjoyable event in the beauty of a historic house, always something to look forward to. After pre-dinner drinks and some friendly “banter”, the gong was sounded inviting everyone to take their places in the dining room, splendidly laid out complete with candles once again. Around twenty members of staff were treated to a lovely three course menu, plus coffee and mints afterwards. Starting with soup, followed by a rather tasty chicken dish, and a rather “moorish” chocolate gateau and cream to finish with. A huge thank you to our very own Christine Spencer, responsible for preparing and presenting all this, which was truly professional. It is with grateful thanks to Christine and Peter for making the evening so memorable and also to Richard Jones, who quietly gives much assistance behind the scenes and serving at table. After dinner, the lounge was the focus for the General Manager’s Report for the 2012 season. The quiz followed, based on facts from the report and everyone became eligible for a prize (“everyone a winner”). Further entertainment was enjoyed by the showing of a couple of short railway (would you believe) related films. What a splendid evening. BHR will be represented at the Norwich Model Railway Show on Sat 6th April. Hellesdon High School, Middletons Lane. THE FIRST RUNNING OF OUR ANNIVERSARY YEAR WILL BE EASTER MONDAY 1st APRIL THE FIRST THIRD SUNDAY RUNNING (THE ANNIVERSARY DATE) WILL BE SUNDAY 21st APRIL (Special Guest, Presenter Carol Bundock)

WHB TWINNING ASSOCIATION A happy Easter to all or “Joyeuses Pâques” for our Francophiles: our French Conversation group discussed Easter customs and spring time in general at their monthly meeting on 13th March at Angela’s in Hoveton. We have a few new members attending these friendly sessions, which is encouraging, the beginners French classes are going well at Ruth and Kevin’s on Thursday evenings and Jane is still keen to restart intermediate classes if enough people are interested, so do contact her on [email protected] or 01603 782496 if you are. The book club also had a good turnout at Ruth’s in Wroxham to discuss “The little House” by Philippa Gregory and meet next at Maggie’s in Belaugh for “A Perfectly Good Man” by Patrick Gayle. Our next main event is our Sunday lunch and wine tasting at Bijou Bottles on Sunday 28th April at 12:00, when Damien will carefully select some wines for us to try and provide a selection of cheeses and charcuterie, all for £11 per head. If you would like to book your place at this, please contact Jane again on the above contact details. Places are limited, so do phone or email sooner rather than later. Our annual flotilla is still scheduled for 13th July, hopefully meeting up in Black Horse Broad, and our quiz and supper evening for 12th October. The trip to our French Twinning villages of La Pommeraye and Mont-Jean-sur-Loire is still on course and deposits have been paid to secure our coach trip with our overnight stop to visit the chateau of Fontainebleau and tickets booked for the evening spectacular performance at Puy du Fou in the Vendée. There are still some places available on the coach, 14th - 20th August, a wonderful French holiday in the lovely Loire region of France, excellent French hospitality, food and wine, interesting excursions, so, if you would like to join our friendly group, please contact Gill Hood on 01603 270397 or [email protected]. 1ST HOVETON RAINBOWS We have 18 girls in our unit and recently they have made Mother’s Day cards and decorated plant pot covers for Primroses to give to their mums. They have played games and enjoyed singing some songs and the new recruits have been getting ready to make their Promise. Unfortunately, due to a change in her job, we have said goodbye to Becky, our assistant leader. Hoveton Rainbows dressed up as Princesses and joined Rainbows from Rackheath, Frettenham and Coltishall at the Rainbow Princess Around the World Party. During the afternoon, the Rainbows iced cakes; made Mulan Fans decorated with beads; made wands and Indian Ring Bead Bracelets. They took part in games, before all sitting down together for a Princess Tea Party. 1st Hoveton Brownies are looking for another lady 18+ to join the team of leaders, as Brown Owl is expecting a baby in July. For more information, please give me a call or take a look at www.girlguiding.org.uk to find out more about Brownies and what they do. No experience is required as help, training and support is provided. Kate - Hautbois District Commissioner, 01603 722665.

1ST WROXHAM GUIDES The snow in January caused us to cancel a couple of meetings, so we have been finishing off the Independent Living badge and enjoyed eating the results of our baking sessions. We spent an evening indoor wall climbing at Eaton Vale – lots of Guides got to the top of the wall and hit the button to activate the various coloured flashing lights. The instructors had the Guides playing various games and challenged them, without the use of ropes, to touch their head, shoulders, knees and toes without falling off the wall. It was possible. Wroxham Guides joined Guides from Salhouse and Coltishall for our World Thinking Day event – a day to celebrate Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world on the anniversary of Lord and Lady Baden Powells birthday. The focus countries this year were Ireland, Malawi, Jordan, Pakistan and Venezuela. In small groups, Guides cooked Irish Potato Scones; Tabbouleh – a Jordanian mezze dish of fresh herbs, vegetables and bulgar wheat; Diwali sweets and Mbatata – sweet potato biscuits from Malawi. They also made seed bead flags before enjoying a Bollywood Dance Session. Wroxham Church Hall was filled with Guides dancing in colourful saris, wearing ankle bells and waving brightly coloured scarves, whilst having fun. We are now looking forward to the warmer weather and making the most of the lighter evenings. Kate, 1st Wroxham Guides – Leader, 01603 722665 NEATISHEAD COMMUNITY GYM We are pleased to announce that we have just been awarded a grant from North Norfolk’s Big Society Fund, administered by the Norfolk Community Foundation. This has been used to buy a brand new cross trainer, which will extend our range of equipment and improve the service we offer to our members. If you are looking for a small, friendly gym, which offers professional instruction and supervision, then give us a try. Louise, our instructor, will plan with you a suitable exercise routine, which will take into account your personal goals and/or any health concerns or injuries you may have. We are open Sun, Mon and Weds mornings between 8:30 and 12:30 at the New Victory Hall, Neatishead. Our prices are affordable (from £15 per month). Unlike larger gyms, there is no contract to sign. Save time and money by keeping it local! Come along for a FREE TASTER SESSION by emailing us on [email protected] or ring 01692 535342. No special clothing is needed; wear something loose with trainers or soft-soled shoes. NEW FOR 2013: GYM and JUNIOR If you have a baby or toddler, who will sit peacefully in a buggy, pram or car seat while you exercise, then come along to our Gym and Junior sessions. Your child will be within sight and your responsibility at all times while you exercise in the gym. Louise, our instructor, is qualified to offer advice on post-natal exercise. Mums, dads and anyone looking after a baby or toddler are welcome. To find out more about these sessions and the times they are available, email us on [email protected] or ring 01692 535342.

HORNING AMATEUR THEATRICAL SOCIETY would like to say a big “Thank You” to those of you who supported our recent pantomime “Alice in Wonderland” and ventured out in the ice and snow! The show was a great success, with a special mention to “BeWilderwood” and “Abbotts Estate Agents” for sponsoring us. Raffle and charity buckets raised substantial money for “The Big C Appeal”, Crohn’s & Collitis UK, along with supporting St John’s Ambulance. We are a lively friendly group and always welcome new members of all ages. If you enjoy playing piano/singing/dancing/acting or would like to help with costumes/backstage/scenery and are free on Sunday evenings, why not come along and join us at Horning Village Hall? We are especially looking for a pianist (would suit musical student/retired person) to come and help with our next production. Our pantomime will be staged 16th – 19th January 2014, with rehearsals commencing on 6th October 2013. The Annual General Meeting takes place in Horning Village Hall at 7pm on Sunday 8th September 2013. For further information, contact Paul Corfield on 01603 782694.

COUNCIL NEWS NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL MESSAGE FROM COUNTY COUNCILLOR NIGEL DIXON Resignation of the County Councillor for Wroxham Division Some of you may know the County Cllr for Wroxham Division, James Carswell, resigned his Cllr role on 15 March 2013, because of the demands of his full time work. As we are so close to the County Council Elections on 2nd May, there will not be a by Election to fill the vacancy; thus for a month or so there will be no, formally appointed, Cllr to cover the Division. However, I am willing to offer temporary County Cllr cover for Wroxham up to 3 May. So, if any Wroxham residents or businesses have any urgent problems that cannot wait until 3 May, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to resolve them. While I will be standing for re-election on 2 May, in the Hoveton & Stalham Division, there will be a new Cllr elected for the Wroxham Division and thus my cover for Wroxham will end on 2 May. I hope that provides some assurance that help will still be to hand, if needed. My contact details, if you wish to raise any other concerns, are: Tel 783885 or e mail: [email protected] or [email protected]. BELAUGH PARISH MEETING The Spring Parish Meeting will take place on Thursday 18th April 2013 at 7:30pm in the Old School Hall, Belaugh. WROXHAM PARISH COUNCIL Hello to you all, sorry for not being able to update you on current affairs, but I, like quite a few of you, have been unwell. At last we can see the beginnings of the United Community Centre, it will be nice to see it completed. There are several other changes within Wroxham, with the old Pine shop being renovated and the buildings near the Bure Railway being turned into a museum. Bewilderwood are hoping to add a small gauge railway to their attractions this season. The Council is pleased about this, as they were asked some time back whether they could entertain such an attraction. Sadly, I have to report that upon my inspections I found that alongside many seats cigarette butts tossed to the ground. Please extinguish them and place in the bins provided alongside the seats. Also we have had bins defaced and more seriously trees “barked”. This is a banding around the bark, which will kill the tree eventually. The daffodils, so lovingly planted for the Queen’s Jubilee year, have been parked on and tops taken off by sticks etc. The Council tries to improve the village appearance, but a few are spoiling it for you all. I know as I travel around the village that nearly all gardens are very pleasing to look at, so you do care that your surroundings are a pleasure to walk in. Council has had meetings with Hoveton & Wroxham Medical Centre and one good thing is that they will now be having a newsletter in the Bridge. Please put forward any suggestions, complaints or thanks to enable the Patient Participation Group to discuss your feedback. You, the patients can help to shape your Medical Centre to be the best. Unfortunately, whilst the extension is going on to the Medical Centre, we are all having to be tolerant of the traffic flow, or lack of it. If it tails back to Rackheath now, what is going to happen at Easter, we will watch with interest. Clerk. NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL NORFOLK BIG SWITCH & SAVE! Power to the People! The Big Switch & Save - cheaper energy bills supplied by people power. North Norfolk residents could save money on their energy bills, thanks to a new scheme being introduced by the district council. A website www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk has been set up, where residents can submit their details to be included in a “reverse auction” to find the cheapest energy tariff for those householders. By grouping hundreds or even thousands of households together, it is possible to negotiate much lower energy tariffs than if an individual was changing supplier on their own. Schemes elsewhere in the country have seen residents save an average of £171 per year on their bills!

Page 21: LIBRARY AND SCHOOL NEWS 8 CLUB NEWS 9wroxhambridge.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Bridge-April-2013-web.pdf · council news ..... 19 north norfolk district council.....19

The scheme opened on 1 March and then after the scheme closes for online applications on 8 April, energy suppliers compete in the auction to make the best offer to those customers who applied. The best deal is then offered back to those who signed up, who will then see how much they could save compared to their existing tariff, and be able to make a decision on whether to change to the new tariff. If the householder opts to change to the new tariff, the switch of supplier will be carried out automatically. The more households who join, the stronger the bargaining power to drive down individual energy bills and so, NNDC has teamed up with five other Norfolk councils under the banner of “The Norfolk Big Switch and Save”. You can help by spreading the word among your friends and family, but it is also possible to register up to five households on the same email address, which means neighbours and family members could help each other sign up too. If you want to benefit from the scheme, sign-up online before 8 April via www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk. Registering is quick and easy - all you need is a recent energy bill (one year’s worth of bills for best results). For residents with no access to the internet, it is possible to apply over the phone or arrange an appointment at the council offices to get help to register, up to the end of March. Call 01263 516044 for more details. HOVETON PARISH COUNCIL Parish Notice Boards: How to keep up with the activities of Hoveton Parish Council. The Agenda for every Hoveton Parish Council meeting is displayed on 3 notice boards in Hoveton village, at least 3 working days before each meeting. Minutes of Parish Council meetings (after they have been agreed by the Council and signed by the chairman) are also displayed on the notice boards. The notice boards are: (1) Riverside Precinct; (2) On the outside wall of Hoveton Village Hall, next to the main entrance doors; (3) In the vestibule of the Medical Centre. There is also a great deal of information published on the website www.hoveton-pc.org.uk. Local residents are also welcome to attend parish council meetings. The April meeting will be at 7:30pm, Monday 8th April 2013, in the Jubilee Room, Hoveton Village Hall. Reminder about “Emergency Heater Loan Scheme”: In the February edition of The Bridge Magazine the parish council announced that it had taken up the heater loan offer from North Norfolk District Council. The portable electric heaters are currently held by Cllr. Peter Howe, Tel: 01603 783096, [email protected]. The scheme is aimed at supporting vulnerable people (i.e. elderly or disabled residents, or families with young children), who may be adversely affected due to breakdown of central heating or find they need temporary additional warmth. Please contact Cllr Howe, if you would like to borrow a portable domestic heater. Granary Staithe: Councillors would like to thank those who have donated towards the purchase of Granary Staithe. More Donations would still be welcome!

If you are interested in joining a team to take part in looking after the Staithe, please volunteer to become a “Staithe Guardian”. Cllr Peter Howe would be delighted to give you details. Tel: 01603 783096, [email protected]. Annual Parish Meeting: 6:30pm, Friday 17th May 2013 at Hoveton Village Hall. An opportunity for an update on Granary Staithe. There will also be a short talk about Emergency Planning in case of flooding etc.

ARTICLES AND PRESS RELEASES WROXHAM WORSHIP AND COMMUNITY CENTRE BUILDING HAS STARTED AT LAST! After frustrating delays of months, caused by safety issues with Network Rail, building finally started on 18 February and is scheduled to be finished in July. The total cost is now £275,000, of which £224,000 has been raised from donations and grant applications, the rest is covered by a loan if necessary, which we hope it will not be. Can we rely on the people of Wroxham to make a final effort to cover the cost? The building will be a useful and necessary addition to local facilities, and will be disabled friendly. The Treasurer, Paul Ryall at The Gables, Water Lane, Neatishead, NR12 8BL, will be very happy to receive any donations for the “Wroxham and Hoveton URC Building Fund”. CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT RURAL ENGLAND NORFOLK Do your parish footpaths have a story to tell? Countryside charity CPRE Norfolk has been given a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to enable three communities to research, publicise and celebrate the footpaths in their parish. The funding will pay for a range of activities and resources, including training in archive research, and also for a researcher from UEA’s Landscape Group to join community groups in walking their local footpaths, to explain why the footpaths are there and why they might be important. Participating parishes will also be given financial and practical help to publicise their research, perhaps through a local exhibition or film, or through printed maps and leaflets. “This project will be both enjoyable and valuable,” explains CPRE Norfolk Branch manager Katy Jones. “It will draw attention to the condition of our footpaths, and also, by involving whole community groups, will ensure the paths are understood, appreciated and ultimately, walked more!” Community groups, who are interested in taking part, should contact Katy Jones, Branch Manager at CPRE Norfolk, on 01603 761660, or email [email protected]. FROM HOVETON VILLAGE HALL/PLAYING FIELD MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE in response to letter from Stalham Road parent Play area equipment receives an annual inspection by ROSPA and has been maintained and insured for approximately 60 years by Hall hire receipts and perhaps an occasional donation. The Hall, smaller rooms, outbuildings, plus car park and the surrounding boundary vegetation must take first call on income. Should maintenance of the Play Area become unaffordable, then in all probability it will have to close. The Persimmon housing development provides an ideal site and opportunity to create a new playground, in to which our equipment could be incorporated; we understand that Persimmon has donated £37,000, which could be used for such a scheme. The site would then be maintained by a levy on the local community (which is usual), as it is at Wroxham, Salhouse, and Sprowston. Incidentally, Sprowston’s newest playground cost Sprowston Parish Council £90,000. Parish Councils pay no VAT, whereas Hoveton Village Hall and Playing Field is liable for VAT on every improvement, repair, insurance, entertainment levies and all safety inspections. The Stalham Road resident (comment, March Bridge) and others could contact North Norfolk District Council and Hoveton Parish Council concerning the possibility of a new publicly maintained Hoveton Playground on Brook Park. RESPONSE TO LETTER FROM A STALHAM ROAD PARENT To the sender of this letter may I suggest you contact the Chairman of the Village Hall Committee, who would be pleased to talk to you and others who might have concerns

about the Village Hall and playing fields? The Village Hall Committee is a group of dedicated volunteers, who run the Trust for the community. Their finances come from hiring the hall, and some generous donations from some local organisations and the Parish Council. Due to many local competitive venues, the Village Hall Committee struggles to keep all the Trust property maintained to government health and safety standards. The play equipment is inspected every year and maintenance is carried out when required, providing funds are available from the Hall lettings. The management of the Village Hall would be pleased to have some assistance from any villager who could assist them in helping them fund raise to improve the facilities. However, please remember that are Laws and Regulations of playgrounds, which have to be abided by and sometimes it is not always possible to have everything you would like. NOTICES NEW U3A GROUP FORMED IN WROXHAM Forty people from Wroxham and many surrounding villages attended an initial meeting on 26 February in Wroxham Church Hall and agreed unanimously that they would like to form a new group. The meeting was guided by Adrian Breacker, Regional Officer of U3A, (University of the Third Age) and Carol Palfrey, who is Chair of the North Walsham group, shared some of her experience. While there is no age limit for U3A, it is designed for older people, who no longer work full time and wish to pursue learning activities in groups, with no curriculum, no exams, but by helping and researching with each other. Some of the 52 activities suggested ranged over languages, books, pub walks, painting, history, music and computers. It may take a little time to organise the various groups, and it looks as though French conversation, walking and a book discussions may be the first. A steering committee will deal with the formalities of setting up the group and a further general meeting has been arranged for 26 March at 2:30pm, again in Wroxham Church Hall. Anyone interested can come along, or ring Corrie Mould on 01603 782755. 1ST HOVETON & WROXHAM SCOUT GROUP are pleased to announce, due to popular demand, the opening of a second Cub pack for boys and girls aged 8-10years. The meetings will take place at Scout H.Q., Nobel Crescent, Wroxham, NR12 8SF each Friday in term time, commencing on Friday 19th April 2013. For further details, please contact Terry Hughes, Group Scout Leader, on 01692 630688 or e-mail [email protected].
