FORMING A SEARCH STRATEGY

For the person researching a Chicano Studies topic atUCSB the methods which will be used will actually vary withthe subject in question, the purpose for the research, andits desired scope.

In many cases the best sources may be books and articlesfrom periodicals. The latter may include scholarly journalsas well as those of a more popular nature. Many suchmaterials are located in the Coleccion Tloque Nahuaque.Other materials may include non-Chicano newspapers, such asthe LOS ANGELES TIMES.

Alternately, one's search might lead into otherdirections, such as dissertations, theses, governmentdocuments, pamphlets, audio-visual materials, or otherspecial library resources.

A search strategy begins with developing and refining astudy topic. For the unitiated, much time and effort can besaved by determining at an early stage whether the topic ismanageable. If the topic is so narrow that there is littlematerial on it, then it is not manageable. At the otherextreme, a topic might be too broad and all-encompLissing,which may again make the topic unmanageable. It would behelpful to consult with the Chicano Studies Librarian forassistance in selecting a topic.

Once a topic has been defined, a comprehensive searchmethod might be as follows:

Step 1 Subject Overview

Find an overview for the general subject. Usually anencyclopedia for that subject is consulted to obtainbackground information. took for a list of books orarticles which may be listed in the bibliography at the endof the article. Also make note of any dictionaries whichcan define the terms related to your topic.

For example, if you were to choose the topic "Chicanointerest groups and public policy," a good starting point

would be to look up the term "Interest groups" in the indexvolume to the INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE SOCIALSCIENCES (FIGURE 1).

Figure 1: Index Example

You will also discover other related subject references, such as "Political participation" and "Pressure groups".While these articles do not relate specifically to Chicanos, the theoretical and conceptual base of the more generalsubject will be important to familiarize you with the widertopic from which you can extrapolate key concepts. Anotherhelpful source would be the HARVARD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICANETHNIC GROUPS (figure 2).

In the field of education, a useful source would be theENCYCLOPEDIA OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH. This can be foundalong with the other subject encyclopedias in the secondfloor reference collection of the library.

METHODS OF ESTIMATING THE SIZE OFGROUPS: e ArrtNiilx

MEXICANS

In 1978 the Census Bureau estimated that 7.2 millionpeople cot Mexican descent were living in the UnitedStates The number was undoubtedly substantiallyhigher at the end of the decade, because of the high fer-tility of Mexican-American families and the heavy continuing emigration from Mexico. Many analysts con-sider that figure to be a signific.mt undercount, whilethere is an unknown but undoubtedly large number ofundocumented Mexican aliens in the United States.

About 90 percent tit the Mexicans reside in the south

Figure 2: Encyclopedia Example

Step 2 Subject Bibliographies

Review the bibliographies available for that field. Thiswill help you as you compile a list of books on your topic. One of the best, and most up-to-date is THE MEXICANAMERICAN: A CRITICAL GUIDE TO RESEARCH AIDS, by Barbara andJ. Cordell Robinson. Here you will find that subjects aredivided into the various fields of study.

Following our sample topic of "Chicano interest groups,"in the Robinson book is a chapter on "Social and BehavioralSciences". Listed there. for example. you will find ASELECTED RESEARCH BIBLIOGRAPHY ON ASPECTS OF SOCIO-ECONOMICand political life of Mexican Americans (Figure 3).Also listed is "Politics and the Chicano: On the Status ofthe Literature." Those would relate nicely to the sampletopic

Step 3 Book Material

Find books for your topic. This calls for locating booksor 0,1e subject using the card catalog After selecting theappropriate subject headings, you will look up *relevantbooks listed in the Main Subject Card Catalog. You will notwant to miss non-Chicano related books on the generalsubject. as well as those which apply directly to ChicanoStudies

For example, following the sample topic, and.using theSubject Catalog, you will find an excellent historical casestudy "The Alianza Movement of New Mexico: the Interplay ofSocial Change and Public Commentary." which discusses one of"the most controversial of all organizations representingSpanish-speaking people in the U.S.," led by Reis LopezTijerina (Figure 4). although the above essay was the onlychapter relating to Chicanos in a book titled MINORITIES ANDPOLITICS. This book was listed in the Subject Catalog usingthe heading "Minorities--Addresses and essays." (Figure 5).

The Main Card Catalog should be consulted to identify allcatal'oed materials found throughout the library, includingcirculating books and non-circulating reference materials.Since the Coleccion Tioque Nahuaque is the primarycollection development point for Chicano area studies.attention is called to the existence of a specialized cardcatalog located therein, which is used to findnon-circulating books and other materials on Chicanos housedAn the Unit. Again, it is organized in author-title.subject, and shelf list sections,

Another major access tool is MELVYL the UC Online UnionCatalog. Designed to be 'user friendly,' this is acomputerized catalog of books located on all nine campusesof the University of California. While not a completelisting, additional titles are being added to the databaseon a daily basis. Reference librarians are available toassist you at any point in your search.

Stems 4 Indexes and Abstracts

Find materials through Indexes and abstracts. Indexesand abstracts are reference books which are generally guidesto articles in Journals and magazines. Since these areparticularly reiiable for locating current information, theyshould never be overlooked. Indexes supplement the CardCatalog of the Library by making accessible large amounts ofperiodical literature, including information found innewspapers, theses, and dissertations. Indexes will usuallygive the author and title of the article. the title of thejournal in which it appeared, the volume, issue number, thedate of publication, and pagination (Figure 6). Anabstracting service, such as SOCIOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS willalso provide a summary of the contents of the publication.

To find information on Chicanos in "mainstream" indexessuch as the SOCIAL SCIENCES INDEX, you will find that theindexing terms may vary between publications. Some examplesof subject headings to use for the indexes are as follow:

Agricultural laborBilingualismDiscriminationEducationEthnic groupsMexican AmericansMexico, Mexican, MexicansMexicans in the United StatesMigrant laborMinoritiesRace problems

Other references to additional related subjects will befound using the above headings. Particular attention shouldbe called to the CHICANO PERIODICAL INDEX, located in theColeccion Tloque Nahuaque. This will be extremely usefulfor Chicano Studies since it is the only index whichexclusively provides significant access to Chicanoperiodical literature.

Again reverting to the sample topic, "Chicano interestgroups and public policy." several relevant subject termswould be "Political History and onditions." and "PublicPolicy " Using the former term. for xample, you would findthe article "Mexican American Community PoliticalOrganization: the key to Chicano Political Power'7" byMiguel David Tired° (Figure 7) Notice Viet each entrylists other descriptors (related subject terms) under whichthis, and other articles associated with the topic can befound.

Step 5 2 Directories

Use directories You may find it appropriate to yourstudy to use available directories. These will help you toidentify relevant organizations or individuals you mightlike to contact in order to get first-hand Information. A

good example would be the NATIONAL DIRECTORY OF CHICANOFACULTY AND RESEARCH (1974) or CHICANO SCHOLARS AND WRITERS.A BID-BIBLIOGRAPHICAL DIRECTORY (1979).

You should be aware that as you use the sources listedabove, many of the journal articles and books whN arecited will likely have bibliographies of their own. Youshould review the books cited there and add them to yourlist as they relate to your topic Thereafter, you can lookthem up in the AuthorTitle Card Catalog in the Library.

In revIew, a useful search strategy could be as follows:

1 Find an overview for the general subject2 Review available bibliographies for the field3 Find books for your topic4 Find materials through indexes and abstracts5 Locate useful directories
