During the past week, Friends of Wilton
Library received two important pieces
of mail from us. One item was the
2012-13 Wilton Library Annual
Report. I hope you like the new look
and enjoy revisiting the events of the
past year of which you were a part. If
you have not yet seen it, I invite you to
take a look at the online version on
our website, or pick up a copy during
your next visit to the Library.
Our very special thanks and appreciation to our friends at
be3 Marketing Group, right here in Wilton Center, who
donated their resources and expertise in designing this
annual report. We are exceedingly grateful for their
generous support.
The second piece of Wilton Library mail which many of
you received was a beautiful Mondrian-themed invitation
to the Beyond Words benefit on Friday, April 4th. The
invitation is also available online. This is a very special
event for us. It brings together friends, acquaintances,
and the community for a truly wonderful evening in
support of your library. The author C.J. Carr said:
"Amid the hectic pace of our lives, a library is like a comfy
chair in front of a cozy fireplace on a wintry day, where
people of every age and status can sit down and feel like
they've come home...to a world without boundaries..."

ART & MUSIC Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room -Henry Butler
Saturday, March 1, 7:30 to 9 pm
Award-winning pianist Henry Butler takes
to the Brubeck Room stage performing his
rich amalgam of jazz, Caribbean, classical,
pop, blues and R&B music. Blinded by
glaucoma at birth, he has been arranging,
composing and performing professionally
since he was twelve. Reception following
the concert. Suggested donation is $10. Funded by the
William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks to
Ed and Catherine Romer and Chris and Tish Brubeck.
Accommodations provided by Hilton Garden Inn, Norwalk.

Candlelight Concert at the Wilton Congregational Church
Sunday, March 9, 4 to 5:30 pm
Eminent clarinetist David Shifrin will be
joined by the Amphion String Quartet in a
program including Wolf's Serenade and clarinet quintets by
Mozart and Brahms. All performances are on Sunday
afternoons at the Wilton Congregational Church, 70
Ridgefield Road, Wilton. A portion of the proceeds benefits

Allen Brings provides an introduction to
music appreciation focusing on two distinct
areas -- an understanding of how
composers have put music to words in the
March 11 session, and on March 25, an overview of
melodies and how they are used. Mr. Brings is also the
Vice President of Connecticut Composers, Inc. There is no
charge for this program but please register for one or both
sessions using the links above.
Wilton Arts Council Focus '14 Art Exhibition and Reception
Friday, March 14, 6 to 7:30 pm
Join us for a reception for the Wilton Arts
Council Focus ʼ14 Juried Photography
Exhibition, an annual display featuring a
variety of photography media. A majority of
the works will be available for purchase with
a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Library. The
reception is open to the public. The exhibition runs through
March 29.
Weir Farm Artist-in-Residence Exhibition & Reception: Elizabeth Lazeren
Monday, March 24, 6 to 7:30 pm
March brings Elizabeth Lazeren to the Weir
Farm Artist-in-Residence program. She is
best known for her richly depicted marine
paintings. At Weir Farm she aims to
explore a different landscape - woodland
and field scenes, tree and brush forms,
forest spaces and freshwater estuaries.
This program is co-sponsored by Weir Farm Art Center and
Weir Farm National Historic Site and presented by Wilton

DOCUMENTARIES English as a Second Language Classes
Mondays & Wednesdays in March,
9:30 to 11 am
Twice-weekly classes in English as a
Second Language continue on Mondays
and Wednesdays until April 28. There
will be no class the week of April 14-18.

Wilton Historical Society/Wilton Library - Scholarly Series: American Made: The Industrial Revolution in Connecticut
Sunday, March 2, 4 to 5:30 pm at Wilton Historical Society
This collaboration between Wilton Library and
the Wilton Historical Society continues with
the third lecture "The Rise and Fall of the
Connecticut Textile Industry" presented by
Jamie Eves. Mr. Eves will trace the reasons for
the rise and decline of Connecticut's textile industry, its
connections to other Connecticut industries, and its
ramifications for the future. Lecture sponsors are Bill and
Kathleen Brennan; moderator is Max Gabrielson. Register here.
Sunday, March 16, 4 to 5:30 pm at Wilton Library
The fourth lecture is "Silicon Valley of the 19th
Century" with William Hosley. Mr. Hosley will present a
picture show and lecture on Connecticut's contribution to
the Industrial Revolution. The Connecticut Valley became
America's first high-tech industrial corridor - the vanguard
of a technology-based revolution that changed the world of
work, producing guns, typewriters, sewing machines,
bicycles, automobiles and more using machines. Lecture

Sunday, March 30, 4 to 5:30 pm at Wilton Historical Society
The final lecture in the series is "The Dawn
of Innovation" presented by Charles
Morris. In his book The Dawn of
Innovation: The First American
Industrial Revolution, Mr. Morris shows
that the platform for America's spectacular
growth spurt was built in the first half of the
century. Mr. Morris will present an overview
of the book and its arguments with special
emphasis on Connecticut's own Eli Whitney. Lecture
sponsors are Lila and Buck Griswold; moderator is Steve Hudspeth. Register here.

Mountaineer Robert Mads Anderson with Daryl Hawk
Tuesday, March 11, 7 to 8:30 pm
Mountaineer, author, explorer, advertising
guru and motivational speaker Robert Mads
Anderson led the first and only successful
ascent on Mount Everest's Kangshung Face,
completed without oxygen or Sherpa support,
before going on to solo ascend the remaining
six of the world's seven summits. Robert Mads
Anderson will be interviewed by international documentary
photographer and fellow Explorers Club member Daryl Hawk. There is no charge but please register in advance.
Five Building Blocks of Growth for Your Small Business

This workshop continues with the final two
seminars in a series designed to help you
analyze and grow your small business.
The March 12 topic is Building a Winning Plan for
Growth. The next session on March 26 will cover Tools to

New Perspectives Film Series: Trash Dance
Saturday, March 15, 7:30 to 9:30 pm
Choreographer Allison Orr finds beauty and
grace in garbage trucks and in the men and
women who pick up trash. On an abandon
airport strip one night only, she creates a
"dance" of men and machines - a stunningly
beautiful and moving performance.
Suggested donation of $5. Refreshments
served. The New Perspectives Documentary series is
programmed and moderated by filmmaker, Megan
Smith-Harris. Please register in advance.
Reel Mondays: The Invisible War
Monday, March 24, 7 to 9:30 pm
The Wilton League of Women Voters and
Wilton Library present The Invisible War in
the third in this season's series of
provocative documentary films. This is a
groundbreaking investigative film about the
epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. The
film is so powerful it has already helped
change military policy. There is no charge but please register in advance.
WGG/WLA Green Speaker Series: The City Dark Film Screening
Thursday, March 27, 7 to 8:30 pm
The City Dark is a feature documentary
about the loss of night. After moving to NYC
from rural Maine, filmmaker Ian Cheney asks
do we need the stars? Featuring stunning
astrophotography and a cast of eclectic
scientists, The City Dark tells the story of light
pollution and the disappearing stars. The
Green Speaker series is co-sponsored by
Wilton Go Green and Wilton Library.There is no charge but please register in advance.
HEALTH & WELLNESS Flu Shot Clinic at Wilton Library
Saturday, March 1, 10 am to noon
Flu shots are available to anyone age six years
and older. Persons under age 18 must be
accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No
appointment needed, first-come, first-served.
Cost is $40 payable by cash or check.
Medicare Part B, Anthem and Aetna accepted as payment.

Matters of the Heart: A Forum on Heart Disease
Tuesday, March 4, 7 to 8:30 pm
Wilton Library, Wilton Family Y and
Ridgefield Visiting Nurse Association present
a free forum on heart disease and the latest
advances in treatments, medications,
research and development. Panelists include
Dr. Michael L. Dewar, Cardio-Thoracic
Surgeon and Assistant Clinical Professor of Cardiac
Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine; Robert
Bepko, Jr., Director of Professional Services for Norwalk
Hospital; and Martha Bryce, Nurse and Heart
Champion. The moderator is President and CEO of RVNA,
Theresa Santoro. All participants receive a free 'Try the Y'
pass. RVNA and Wilton Family Y will offer Free Blood
Pressure Screenings and heart healthy snacks from 6 to 7
pm prior to the forum. The RVNA will offer free non-
fasting cholesterol screenings from 8 to 10 am on March 5
at the Wilton Family Y. Appointment required - please call
the RVNA at 203-438-5555, ext. 1005 to book. The talk will be followed by a Q&A. Registration is recommended.
Breast Cancer Survivors' Support Group
Tuesday, March 11, 6 to 8 pm
Post-treatment cancer survivors are invited to
join in this monthly support group held at
Wilton Library and presented by The Breast
Cancer Survival Center (BCSC). Registration
is highly encouraged.
AARP Driver Safety Class
Wednesday, March 12, 10 am to 2 pm
The AARP Driver Safety Program is designed
especially for drivers age 50+. This single
session, four-hour course covers the normal
changes in vision, hearing and reaction time
associated with ageing and provides practical techniques
on how to adjust. Program cost is $15 for AARP members;
$20 for non-members, payable at the class. Please register in advance.
SPOTLIGHT ON The Business of Our Book Sales No need to head out-of-town for that
coveted best seller or children's picture
book -- bibliophiles in-the-know flock
to Wilton Library four times a year for our
much-lauded Book Sales. Piles and piles
and rows and rows of cleaned, sorted, and
categorized books blanket the tables of Wilton Library's
Book Cellar as tireless volunteers prepare for the business
of book selling.
The book-selling season kicks off with the the annual
Gigantic Book Sale, happening this year April 26 to
29, where more than 75,000 new and gently used books
are offered. Rare and collectible books are also available,
as well as CDs, DVDs and books on tape. Summer brings
the outdoor Summer Sidewalk Book Sale, followed by
fall's Tots to Teens Book Sale stocked with books
appealing to younger readers. Visit our gallery from late
November to December for the Holiday Book Sale where
gifts for family and friends abound. Year round in the
gallery, check out the Book Sale shelf for new and current
best sellers as well as the clearance cart for
discounted selections.
Thanks to the generosity of the community, all items on
sale are donations and all book sale staff are volunteers,
so 100% of the revenue generated goes directly to Library
collections, services and programs. This past fiscal year,
book sales generated more than $90,000. Our heartfelt
thanks to those who so generously donate their time,
energy and materials as well as those who patronize our
book sales.
What books can be donated? Books and textbooks in
good condition are graciously accepted at the Circulation
Desk or can be left in the gray boxes outside the Godfrey
Place entrance. Please note the Library does not accept
magazines, condensed books or records. Donations are
suspended in early April and resume in May to allow time
to prepare for the Gigantic Book Sale. Books that are not
suitable for sale are recycled or donated to other charitable
organizations. Receipts for donated books are available at
the reference and circulation desks.

PARENTING Parenting Book Series with Dr. Susan Bauerfeld
Tuesday, March 4, 10:30 am to noon
In this series, Dr. Susan Bauerfeld, a licensed
clinical psychologist, reviews several parenting
books chosen for their soundness and
relevance to the community. The March book is
No: Why Kids - of All Ages - Need to Hear
It and Ways Parents Can Say It by Dr.
David Walsh, Ph.D. Co-sponsored by WYC,

Cyberbullying: What Every Parent Needs to Know
Tuesday, March 18, 11 am to 1 pm
What is cyberbullying? How does it work?
How can parents effectively respond? What
are current school policies on cyberbullying?
Join us for a discussion with local experts Jo
Ann Freiberg, Ph.D., Educational Consultant
for the State of Connecticut, Department of
Education; Matt Hepfer, Director of Technology, Wilton
Public Schools; and Charles A. Smith, Ed.D., Assistant
Superintendent, Wilton Public Schools. Co-sponsored by
Wilton Youth Council, Wilton Library, Wilton Public Schools

TEENS Stock Market Game for Teens Mondays, March 3 through April 7, 4 to
5 pm
The Stock Market Game, a simulated
marketplace played by teens all around the
world, continues for teens in grades 7 - 12.
Registration is filled.
Teen Advisory Board Meeting Tuesday, March 11, 3:30 to 5 pm
Teens in grades 6 to 12 are invited to join
a monthly Teen Advisory Board (TAB)
meeting. TAB works with the Library by
helping select materials for the teen
collection, planning teen events, and more.
Applications are online for first time attendees or by
emailing Tracey Morgan, Teen Services Assistant.
Newcomers always welcome. Registration is
recommended.
Poetry in Motion - Where I Stand Two Performances: Friday & Saturday, March 21 &
22 7:30 to 9 pm
Poetry in Motion - Where I Stand is a
two-performance, poetry and arts event
created by teens in grades 7 through 12.
Receptions follow each evening's
performance. Tickets are $5, available at
the Circulation Desk beginning March 5.
