• I am a CLA member• Long Beach is about an hour from where I live• I had never been to a library and information

science conference before

• Pre-Conference Workshop• Speakers: Kevin Balster, UCLA; Luiz Mendes, CSU

Northridge• Offered basic introduction to cataloging with

RDA, focused on print monographs, and covered both description and access

• Included hands-on exercises which included use of tools and documentation in support of cataloging with RDA.

• Attendees accessed the latest national documentation on policies, decisions, best practices, and training materials related to RDA.

• Through guided participatory exercises, they gained knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for the effective implementation and integration of RDA into the fabric of their libraries.

LibraryThing Creates a Soft Catalog and Plenty of Buzz in a Special Collection

• Poster in the Exhibit Hall• LibraryThing- versatile tool, perfect for creating a soft

catalog for small non-circulating book collections at institutions large and small.

• The Scandinavian American Cultural and Historical Foundation took a backload of at least a dozen boxes of donated books and organized them via LibraryThing.

• They created a tool for expanding their influence and attracting others interested in learning and discussing Scandinavian and Scandinavian-American culture.

• Speakers: Nicole Pasini, San Mateo County Library; Sandy Wee, San Mateo County Library

• Shared experiences with the implementation of their word-based classification system for nonfiction, FindIt!

• Covered steps used to implement the system in the San Mateo County Library– Step 1: Why?– Step 2: Building Translation Key– Step 3: Implementation

• Learning Curve?– FindIt!: less than sixty pages– Dewey Decimal Classification: a lot of pages

• Developed a completely new classification system, converted collections, and trained staff and patrons about the system and its benefits.
