THE LIBERTY NORTH HIGH SCHOOL BAND PROGRAM IS DEDICATED TO: MAKING IT HAPPEN, as well as humanly possible, SELF DISCIPLINE AND ENTHUSIASTIC ATTITUDES, BEING RESPONSIBLE AND PROMPT, COMMITMENTS TOWARD preparation for rehearsals and performances, mastering musical fundamentals, progressing consistently, and caring to uphold the traditions of the Liberty North High School Band with PRIDE AND HONOR! STRIVING to make mediocrity a constant enemy, combated with RESPONSIBILITY - ATTITUDE - SPIRIT - PRECISION - AND EFFICIENCY. Bands at Liberty North High School The LNHS Band Department offers a wide variety of performing opportunities in instrumental music. Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Colorguard, Winterguard, Pep Band, Small Ensembles, and Contest Solos make up the band curriculum that is offered at Liberty North High School. Not all of these groups perform on a regular basis throughout the year and not all of these groups are open to all students. Symphonic/Concert Band The Liberty North High School Symphonic Band is the primary performing ensemble in the LNHS Band Program. All band students in grades 9-12 are required to play in this group. The Symphonic/Concert Bands meet during the school day beginning in late Fall after the conclusion of marching band. The group performs at three or more home concerts, State Band Contest, and other special occasions. Auditions for chair and band placement will be held in late October near the conclusion of marching season. Audition material will be taken from the All-District Audition packet. All band members must sign up for band for the entire school year thus playing in Symphonic/Concert Band and Marching Band. All performances are required as a part of the student’s grade. All symphonic band members are required to take a solo and/or ensemble to District Music Contest.

Marching Band Along with Symphonic Band, all band students in grades 9-12 are required to participate in the Screaming Eagle Marching Band. Preseason rehearsals usually begin three weeks before the official beginning of the school year and are held at various times during the day. After school begins, Marching Band rehearses during the regular school day from August through the end of football season. In addition, the group rehearses on select mornings before school. Students in the drumline and colorguard who participate in special auxiliary competitions will have to meet outside of the regular rehearsal time in preparation for these events. All band members must sign up for band for the entire school year thus playing in Marching Band and Symphonic/Concert Band. All performances and practices are required and a part of the student’s grade. Jazz Band The Liberty North Jazz Band meets 2-3 days a week before school November- April. The group performs at home concerts, community events, and attends various jazz festivals in the area. Students are required to possess the playing skills necessary to play jazz music and must audition for the group. Instrumentation will be 5 saxes, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, 2 percussion/drums, piano, bass, drums. Any LNHS band member is eligible to audition for jazz ensemble provided they can play a jazz instrument. Students in jazz band are expected to have knowledge and experience in the fundamentals of music as a prerequisite. The music this ensemble studies and performs is very different than the symphonic and marching bands. Success in this group depends on a continuous fundamental practice and understanding of the basics of ensemble performance and musicianship. This is attained through membership in one of the corps music groups. For this reason, all Jazz Ensemble members are required to maintain their enrollment in Symphonic/Concert Band. Jazz Ensemble is enrichment for those students who desire to expand their performance opportunities. Students who play non-traditional band instruments (guitar, bass, piano) are allowed to audition for jazz band as an extra-curricular activity. Pep Band The LNHS Screaming Eagles Pep Band will play at 8 designated home basketball games. It will be a combination of boys and girls games. All high school band members will be split into two bands of equal playing ability. Each group will be required as a part of the class grade to play at 4 games. If a student wishes to get letter credit for pep band, they will be required to play at all 8 games. If a student has a conflict with one of their required games, they may ask to trade with someone who plays their part in the other band. All trades must be approved by the director and done at least a day in advance

Small Ensembles & Solos/District and State Music Contest Students will participate in solos and small ensembles January through March to prepare material for the District Music Festival. Do to being limited to 60 entries, a playoff may be necessary to choose those events that will represent LNHS. Solo and ensemble music must be selected from a list approved by the Missouri State High School Activities Association. All events will perform and receive a rating from a judge of either a I (Exemplary), II (Excellent), III (good), IV (fair) or V (weak). Those receiving a “I” rating are eligible and expected to proceed to the State Music Festival. Students in a solo or small ensemble will be required to meet with a band director at least once a week outside of class for coaching. The band director has the right to deny any group or individual participation at music contest that is not adequately prepared. Letter credit is also given with participation in this activity. The student must earn a rating of II or higher to receive letter credit for this activity. Colorguard and Winterguard The Guard is an auxiliary unit that performs as a part of the marching band at all performances to enhance the visual effect of the music. The guard often will perform a feature routine with the live band or recorded music. Guard members must have expertise in a wide variety of flag techniques and poses a high level of skill in marching, dancing and other forms of movement. A guard member who also plays a band instrument may enroll in band for the full school year. If a member of guard does not play an instrument for concert band, that person would be enrolled in colorguard class for 1st semester. Guard will practice primarily during class time but some extra practices outside of class are required in preparation for guard competitions and features. Winterguard is an extra-circular group that meets during winter sports season. This is an auditioned group open to all LNHS students. The group will perform a routine to recorded music and perform locally and compete in area competitions. All-District & All-State Band Organizations During the first week of November each year, students from high schools in the KC Metro District gather at Liberty High School to audition for All-District Concert Band and Jazz Band. Any LNHS band member can participate but it is not required as part of the band class grade. Those students with advanced playing skills are strongly encouraged to audition. Students who are selected for the All-District Band become eligible to audition for the Missouri All-State Band. These auditions are held at Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri on the first Saturday in December. Any student who wishes to tryout for these honor bands must meet with a director at least once a week for coaching in order to be allowed to tryout. Membership in an All-District or All-State group often leads to automatic scholarships at many universities. Students making the All-District or All-State band will be required to attend various rehearsals and performances for group membership. Letter credit is given for making the group.

LN BAND OFFICERS JOB DESCRIPTION/EXPECTATIONS President – this role will be filled by the head drum major, responsibilities include being the student leader of the band and the primary student representative of the band to the public, staff, and administration. Expectations for conduct, attitude, and professionalism are EXTREMELY high. Vice-President: The paramaters of this job are deliberately vague: you need to be ready for anything. You are a secretary, a librarian, a director’s assistant, a logistics captain (overseeing loading and unloading of trucks and busses) a gopher, anything. You are a very important leader of the band – but your leadership is about SERVICE. You are not anybody’s butler/maid, but you are everybody’s HELPER. This role can be filled by a drum major or section leader if need be. This role requires great flexibility and the heart of a servant. Secretary: Your primary day to day job will be to coordinate with section leaders to get an accurate record of attendance, tardies, etc. You may assist with bus attendance on trips, attendance at performances, and keeping a record of anyone missing equipment, music, gloves, etc. This sounds like a big job, but if you follow the key words – “coordinate with section leaders” – this can easily be a job for the super organized student. Librarian: Your primary job is the SHEET MUSIC! Make sure there are always plenty of copies of the music in score order and neatly organized in a folder. Students will come to YOU when they are missing the second page of whatever song for 3rd trumpet, or whatever… You will learn how to use the various functions on the copy machine in Mr. Nicewaner’s room. You will manage the high school’s inventory of extra flip folder pages as well. During concert season, assist all directors with music pass-in days and refiling in the library. You are welcome to appoint “deputies” to help you with these tasks, but the ultimate responsibility lies with you. Historian: are you web-savvy? Do you like to take pictures? This is the job for you. You will work with directors to improve and update the band website. You will take pictures, post on sites and social media, post actual hard copy photographs on the band bulletin board, etc. All officers will be expected to assist the Band Boosters in any way possible with road meals, uniform check out and in, and other...
