    2 Curated News EditionYoung Syrian activists put life on hold inrevolt(USATODAY.com Feed)S ub mi t t e d a t 3 / 3 0 / 2 0 1 2 3: 1 5 : 0 7 P MAPAnti-Syrian regime activists

cover their faces with scarves asthey prepare an Arabic banner.TRIPOLI, Lebanon (AP) Last

year, Khalid was a 19-year-oldSyrian university student whosemodest dreams were to land a joband earn enough to marry his

girlfriend not simple tasksgiven Syria's weak economy andhis lack of connections to theruling elite.

Since then, he's become afugitive activist in the fight totopple President Bashar Assad.Khalid said he has been torturedby security forces and hasn'tspoken to his loved ones inmonths for fear he'll endangertheir lives.Young people like Khalid have

manned the front lines in theuprisings across the Arab world, organizing protests, documentingviolence and taking up armsagainst government troops.Analysts say youth frustration

has proven to be a potent force inan area where some 60 percent ofpeople are under 25 making itone of the world's youngestregions. Many youth activists say they

had plenty to protest, facingadulthood in societies where

decades of autocratic rule leftthem with limited freedom andconstricted economies. For Khalidand other young Syrians, theuprising is about more than justtoppling a dictator. It's a fight fortheir generation's dreams."I can't think about my own lifenow," said Khalid, now 20, aftersneaking across the Syrian borderinto Lebanon. "All I can thinkabout is working to make the

revolution succeed because it willhave a huge effect on the lives ofall youth."The young have been key players

in Syria's uprising since its start inMarch 2011, when security forcesarrested a group of teenagers whoscrawled anti-regime graffiti on awall in the southern city of Daraa, generating huge protests.Assad's security forces violently

cracked down, deploying tanks, snipers and thugs to quash the

spreading dissent. Later, manycivilians took up arms to defendtheir communities and attacksecurity forces. The U.N. saysmore than 9,000 people have beenkilled, including at least 500children. Hundreds more childrenhave been injured, detained orabused. As the death toll mounts, young

activists acknowledge somenaivete in their decision to

challenge one of the region's mostbrutal police states. Their elders

often tried to dissuade them, recalling how Assad's father andpredecessor , Hafez, k i l ledbetween 10,000 and 25,000people while crushing a 1982rebellion in the city of Hama."Many of them were scared. Theysaw what the regime can do andtold us, 'We were there in 1982.You weren't.'" said Mustafa, 24,who fled the coastal city of Baniasto Lebanon last year. Like Khalid,

he asked only that his first namebe used for fear of endangeringrelatives inside Syria.Still, many have decided that a

chance at better lives was worthdropping their studies, jobs andmarriage plans. Before the uprising, Khalid

studied engineering at a universityin the central city of Homs, eventhough he was interested incomputers and wasn't sure he'dever get a job. He dreamed of

going to school abroad, butgovernment scholarships went tostudents in the ruling Baath Party. He never thought about politics,

but began paying close attentionwhen uprisings toppled dictatorsin Tunisia and Egypt last year. InMarch, security forces stopped ananti-regime demonstration oncampus, then forced students toattend a pro-Assad rally. In April, security forces killed

protesters in his neighborhood,Baba Amr, then posted troops to

deter future gatherings."That was the first time I got madand decided I was against theregime," Khalid said.Anger grew in the neighborhood

as the regime crushed moreprotests and raided homes toarrest act iv is ts , somet imesdetaining their parents, he said.Khalid started a Facebook page

to commemorate those killedwhile working with other activists

to film protests to post online. In October, security forces

stopped him at a checkpoint andfound a photo on his cellphone ofa government sniper, Khalid said.At the police station, he wasbeaten with a mop handle until hisback was numb, then locked withsix others in a cell so small thatonly three people could sit downat a time, he added. For 20 days, he was regularly

    beaten during interrogations and

suspended by plastic strips aroundhis wrists, he said. He finallyescaped with the help of asympathetic security officer."After that, I knew I'd never shutup," he said. "I wanted to do theimpossible to make the revolutionsucceed."But first, he broke up with his

girlfriend, worrying that theirrelationship would endanger her.She cried when he told her.

"I had to do it for her safety," hesaid. "I have set out on a martyr

mission. As soon as you say, 'I'man activist,' you know you coulddie."At that time, Baba Amr was

becoming a national symbol ofthe uprising. Army defectors hasflocked to the area, making itharder for troops to come in,protests grew and the youthorganized into media, medical andeven trash pickup committees. That defiance drew the regime's

wrath, and in early Februarytroops surrounded Baba Amr andshelled it daily. Khalid and themedia team kept working, filmingand uploading v ideos andcommunicating with journalistsand other activists via Skype.Despite the violence, there was

youthful mischief. When anexplosion near their makeshiftmedia center silenced a roosteroften heard in their videos, theycommemorated him with his own

Facebook page.On Feb. 22, government rockets

hit the media center, killing anumber of activists and foreignjournalists Marie Colvin an dRemi Ochlik, who had sneakedinto Syria. Government troopscaptured the area on March 1,after armed rebels and activistspulled out.Khalid says he's seen the bodies

of some of his relatives in activist

    the past few days, there arei m p a s s i o n e d p l e a s b yZimmerman's brother, father,lawyer and friends begging thepublic to consider the counter-argument : The 28-year-o ldneighborhood watch captain

struggled for his life against anaggressive attacker. He fired thegun, they say, in a kill-or-be-killed moment."Nobody just stood there with abag of Skittles and an iced tea,"Robert Zimmerman Jr. said onCNN's Piers Morgan Tonight, alleging that Trayvon smashed hisbrother's head into the pavementin a rage. "You return force whensomebody assaults you. There

would have been George dead hadhe not acted decisively andinstantaneously in that momentwhen he was being disarmed."

Robert Zimmerman added,"That's called saving your life."Calls for vigilante justice and

pleas for a fair shake in the courtof public opinion have createdone of the most stirring nationalcrime debates in recent years. Thekilling Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla.,has sparked more than a dozen

rallies across the country, largelyfueled by the belief of many thatthe case is the tip of the iceberg ofa glaring problem of racialinjustice in the USA.Family photoTrayvon Martin was shot and

"I have to think back to O.J.Simpson to find a case thatgrabbed the nation in this way,"

said Randy Reep, a criminald e fen se a t t o rn ey b ased i nJacksonville. "It's alarming to methat I've seen bounties for asuspect on a case before they'vebeen indicted. The rhetoric hastaken on such a violent tone. Itwould not take much of a leap ofirrational behavior to have thisbecome violent."

T r a y v o n ' s f a m i l y a n dZimmerman's family tell differentstories, but it's important that bothsides and the public be preparedto accept the decision of the grand jury and the state and federalofficials handling the case, Reepsaid. The Seminole County grand jury considering the case willconvene April 10."This case needs to play out in thecourt of law and not the court ofpublic opinion," he said.Emotion has played a bigger role

for some than reason. A group

And it wasjust a slip, and I just know that hereally, really has been concerned."Zimmerman's brother said the

hatred in the case is astounding. He said the case is being drivenby a "carnival of hatred" and a"mythology" surrounding George

Zimmerman that isn't true."He's the neighbor that everybodywould want to have," RobertZimmerman said. "He's the kindof guy that sees somebodystruggling with changing a tireand stops to help them or helpsolder people with their groceries. He goes out of his way to helppeople."Contributing: Associated Press

nuclear centrifuge project insouthern Ohio will move forwarddespite a setback in Congress thisweek , u ran ium enr ichmentcompany USEC said Friday. By Nicolas Asfouri, AFP/GettyImagesEnergy Secretary Steven Chu has

said he wants a signal that he hasthe authority to decide on a grantfor the American CentrifugeProject.Congress' failure to act on a long-term transportation bill means thata $106 million research anddevelopment g ran t fo r theAmerican Centrifuge Projectremains in limbo. That provisionwas included in the Senatevers ion , bu t i t faces someresistance in the House, which hasstricter rules on "earmarks."

The grant is a stopgap measurewhile the company seeks $2billion in Department of Energy

loan guarantees to expand theproject, which it says will support2,000 jobs in Ohio and a half-dozen other states.Other loan guarantees have come

under congressional scrutiny afterthe bankruptcy of solar panelmaker Solyndra despite $535million in federal loan backing.USA TODAY reported this monththat some Republican critics ofthe Solyndra project had urged"immediate action" on USEC's

    l o an g u aran t ee ev en a f t e rSolyndra's failure became known.USEC had told investors and

analysts that it needed federalaction on the grant by March 31,or it would be forced to startwinding down operations. The project, once completed,

    t h e c o m p a n y s a i d i t h a drenegotiated the terms of itscredit, allowing it to borrow $15

million a month to operate theproject through May. In June, thatdrops to $1 million. That's important because the

Still, he said thegovernment talks have madeenough progress for its board to jus t i fy "con t inued l imi tedsp en d i n g " o n t h e p ro j ec t .The project is in the district of

Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, whowas defeated in the Republicanprimary this month. She and othermemb er s o f a b i p a r t i s an ,multistate delegation of projectsupporters are pushing Energy

Secretary Steven Chu to awardthe grant out of existing funds.Chu has told lawmakers he wants

a clear signal from Congress thathe has the authority."We're continuing to work withCongress, and we're hopeful thatthe House picks up the languagein the Senate transportation bill,"said DOE spokeswoman JenStutsman. "We are, beyond that, looking at whatever potentialoptions are available."President Obama supported theproject when he campaigned insouthern Ohio in 2008 and has

included an additional $150million in research funding in his2013 budget. Even if approved byCongress, that funding won't beavailable at least until the newfiscal year starts Oct. 1. All told,$300 million in grant fundingwould allow USEC to update itsloan guarantee application in2013, Welch said."The administration has beenincredibly clear from the secretaryup to the White House," Stutsmansaid. "We've done everything thatwe can to move this projectforward. We are trying to takesteps to make sure the U.S. has adomestic enrichment capabilitythat is necessary for national

6 Curated News EditionAnalysis: GOP needs to wake up toPresident Obama's dominance online(The Front Page)S ub mi t t e d a t 3 / 3 0 / 2 0 1 2 6: 2 9 : 0 0 A MBig news of the week seems to bethe Team Obama has nowdiscovered yet another socialmedia platform that they candominate: the rapidly growing andexpanding Pinterest platform. For the Republicans, the story is

getting increasingly desperate. Itspretty clear from this weeks

numbers that the rate of growthonline across the board for theRepublican candidates is slowingdramatically.

My sense is that all of theinfighting and bickering is takingits toll on an electorate that hasgrown tired of these brands andthe ongoing rhetoric between thecandidates. Anyone sitting over att h e R e p u b l i c a n N a t i o n a lCommittee looking at thesenumbers and seeing something

more positive than I do hasprobably drunk too much of theKool-Aid.The last remaining Republicans

are being propped up by a mediaconstituency that is desperate fora continuing soap opera, not a realelect ion cycle. I t s read i lyapparent that the Republican Partyhas little regard for fighting agood fight to win back the WhiteHouse. I see nothing anywherethat leads me to believe that therewill be any magical strategy or

formula that will reverse thetrends that we are seeing rightnow. In fact, the Obama camp isshowing signs of gaining strengthdespite all of the rumblings aboutthe potential of ObamaCare beingstruck down by the SupremeCourt. The re-election team forBarack Obama is hitting on allcylinders and an online cohort isbeing assembled that will providethe President with his second

term.I watch with great disdain as oneRepublican pundit after anothermakes the rounds of Fox Newsand other media platforms railingagainst the President and hispolicies. One would think fromthis rancor that the election isgoing to be very close. We are allbeing duped and lulled into a falsesense of security. Everyone on thenetwork side likes programmingwhere the perception is nip and

    t u c k c l o s e g a m e s , t i g h tcompetitions. Such intensityd r i v e s v i e w e r s t o t h e s ebroadcasts. No one is tuning in towatch a blowout. So it is with thenumbers this week online. At atime when a Republican candidateshould be surging, there is stills lugging going on for thecameras .If any of the candidates believe

that all of this is helping anyRepublican win the White House, they need to have their heads

examined. Where is the onlinemarketing strategy to competewi th Team Ob am a? I t i snonexistent. Where are all ofthose campaign dollars going?Trust me--it wont even be closewhen its t ime to run thatroadblock of TV ads this fall.Heres the latest data. With theWisconsin primary coming April3, Romney needs to start actingPresidential soon, or he wont bean y so r t o f a r esp ec t ab l eco n ten d er . Ron Paul Rons online teamneeds to merge with Romneysteam after all of the battling isover in the next week or so.Throughout this race, Paul hasdone an admirable job of building

an online community and growingit. Romney is going to need amajor injection of enthusiasm andonline knowledge; my sense isthat Romneys team can learn agreat deal from the Ron Paulteams mechanics and success. Newt Gingrich --Newt reallyneeds to leave the race and fade toblack. His performance withinFacebook this week is insulting tohis image as a viable candidate.

Only the bright lights of thecameras and a desire in the mediaf o r s o m e o n e w h o m a k e soutrageous sound bites from timeto time would keep a candidatelike Newt in the game. There ishonor in knowing when to foldthe tent and go home to supportthe inevitable nominee. Thatmoment for Newt was weeks ago.The longer he stays in, the moredamage is being done to hispersonal brand and that of the

party. Rick Santorum Wisconsinmay be Ricks swan song; likeNewt, he has had his moment inthe spotlight. He has made hispoin t very clear about thedifferences between himself andMitt Romney. I have a sense thatwe will see his words turnedagainst Mitt in the fall via TeamObama commercials. Here again,Santorum needs to preserve hisown brand to fight another dayand learn from the mistakes made

Sure, the odds of winningtonight's $640 million MegaMillions lottery are daunting. Butthe likelihood of the winnerkeeping his or her cash are prettydisconcerting as well."The perception is once you winthe lottery, you are set you'rein great shape. But in reality the

battle has just begun," saysAndrew Stoltmann, an attorneywho has represented lotterywinners who have hit financialtroubles."Often lottery winners do nothave much experience withmanaging money and lack basicinvesting skills," he says. In turn, they can eas i ly make badinvestments, fritter their moneyaway on big-ticket purchases andfall prey to scam artists.

Tales of lottery winners whoblew their riches abound. One ofthe most infamous is Curtis Sharp,an air conditioning technicianfrom Newark, N.J., who won $5million in the New York Lottodrawing in 1982.Known for his dapper attire and

flashy personality, he became anicon for making it big throughlottery luck. A three-piece-suit-clad Sharp even starred in a Lottoad that showed him cruising in theback of a limousine .

But his funds dissipated."The money's gone," Sharp, then71, told the New York DailyNews in 2009. "I bought into a lotof things that went bad."

Wisconsin-resident AndrewCicero also struggled to maintainhis lottery windfall. He lost mostof the $5.5 million he won in1995 to bad investments.Cicero lived on a pension and

    Social Security income before he

was successfully able to gainsome of the money back inlawsuits against his investmentand advisory firms that wereset t led . S to l tmann handledCicero's case but declined tocomment.

Winners who lack financialsavvy barely have time to Google"investing tips" before they aredeluged with offers from financialplanners, scam artists, friends andfamily. So it's easy for a lottery

    v i c t o r t o q u i c k l y f e e loverwhelmed and make poordecisions, Stoltmann says.For the lucky winner of tonight's

Mega Millions or anyone wholands a large, unexpected windfall financial advisers offer thisinitial advice: Keep the newsquiet."Don't go to Facebook and sayyou 've jus t won the MegaMillions lottery," says attorneyRichard Craig, whose firm hasrepresented past lottery winners.

Sure, it's fine to share the newswith close, trustworthy friendsand families, he says. But thosewho widely brag about theirn e w f o u n d f o r t u n e s o p e nthemselves up to a swarm oflegitimate and illegitimate moneyrequests, as well as to potentialpredatory lawsuits from thosewho want to get their hands on theriches."In this litigious society, you don't

want to be a target so don'tpurposely draw attention toyourself," Craig says. "You wantto do your best to minimize yourvisibility on the radar screen."Other tips on how to manage any

Mega Millions or other lottery windfalls.Keep that winning ticket safe:

Powerball champ Louise White who won a $336 million jackpot in February hid theticket in her Bible. Financial

advisers say that's not the bestway to go. Instead, those withwinning tickets should sign themand tuck them into a safe or safetydeposit box, Craig says. Headvocates making a few copies ofthe winning ticket and storingthose papers in a separatelocat ion .Create a trusted advisory team:

    A s k f r i e n d s , f a m i l y a n dp r o f e s s i o n a l c o n t a c t s f o rsuggestions on credible taxexper ts , lawyers , f inancial

planners and insurance providers."Few lottery winners have theinfrastructure in place to managea lottery windfall," Stoltmannsays. Craig suggests winnerscreate an "advisory board" thatcan include business-savvyfriends, as well as professionaladvisers. Among its benefits: Theboard can serve as "a buffer"against friends and family whoask for handouts. This way, a

winner doesn't have to solely takeb lame for tu rn ing down asolicitation from a family orfriend.Sit tight for six months:"Don't

make any major commitments orfinancial obligations for sixmonths," Craig says. Instead, justlet the win settle in. "It's temptingfor a lottery winner to quit his orher job or immediately splurge ona mansion or other large purchase.Don't," Stoltmann says. "The

worst decisions made by lotterywinners are usually the first fewdecisions."Don't rely on the familiar when

investing: For the financiallyuneducated, there is a tendency toinvest in a tangible assets suchas a restaurant or car wash rather than put the money intomore liquid, and easily traded, investments such as stocks orbonds, says Ed Butowsky ,managing partner at ChapwoodCapital Investment Management.

"They typically will invest inthings they are familiar with andthat they can touch and feelbecause, generally speaking, theydon't have the knowledge ofinvestment instruments," he says.Although it's easy to put moneyinto a private investment, such asa restaurant, "it's hard to get themoney out." Winners shouldinstead consider public securitiesover these private investments, he

says.Donate wisely: Don't dole outmoney ind iscr iminately tocharities, Craig says. Instead, those who want to contribute to acause should speak wi th afinancial adviser about taxbenefits, as well as the possibilityof setting up a foundation.Have fun: It's OK to buy that

dream boat or new wardrobe ifit's planned out. "Take some ofthis, and let it be mad money,"

    Craig says.Contributing: Natalie DiBlasio in

An Israeli F-16 fighter jet(Reuters/Nikola Solic)According to an alleged leak,

Israel is secretly staging anairstrike on Iran in neighboringAzerbaijan.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin

Netanyahu has been salivatingover the thought of bombing

Iranian nuclear facilities for sometime now, and an anonymoussenior US diplomat along withmilitary intelligence officialsalleged that Israel has recentlybeen granted access to airbases onIrans northern border." The Israelis have bought anairfield and the airfield is calledAzerba i jan ," sa id a senioradminist ra t ion off ic ia l .The information which was

    disclosed in Foreign Policy

magazine stated that the Israeli-Azerbaijani alliance is deeper thanboth parties want others tobelieve.According to the article, in 2009

a memo released by WikiLeaksquoted Azerbaijani President

I lham Aliyev labe l ing thecountry's relationship with Israelas an iceberg where " nine-tenthsof it is below the surface."For years Israel and Azerbaijan

have established an economicrelationship. Israel buys oil fromAzerba i jan and Azerba i janpurchases military equipmentfrom Israel.Despite the Israeli-Azerbaijani

    relationship, Azerbaijan officials

have denied that such an attackwould ever be launched fromAzerbaijani soil." The Republic of Azerbaijan, likealways in the past, will neverpermit any country to takeadvantage of its land, or air, against the Islamic Republic ofIran, which we consider ourbrother and friend country," saidAzerbaijan's defense ministerduring a visit to Tehran.

    Neverthe less the Israe l i -

Azerbaijani cooperation allegedlycaused so much concern in theWhite House that unnamedofficials were given permission toleak the information onpossibleairstrikes on Iran from the South-Caucasus country. The intention

of the Obama administration wasto make the plans public to disruptany secret agreements betweenthe two governments that wouldleave the US in the dark. These plans would also grant

Israel much needed airfields for astrike on Iran .In a study lead by Retired Air

Force Col. Sam Gardiner, for athink-tank affiliated with theSwedish Ministry of Defense

played out the possible scenariosof an Israeli lead attack on Iran." It's not weight that's a problem,"said Gardiner in the AFP article. The problem is the number of

weapons that are mounted on eachaircraft," Gardiner added. In other words, the lighter the

payload the more distance it cantravel; the heavier the payload thedistance will suffer. He reiterated restricting the

    distance travel will increase

firepower and will boost thelikelihood of an effective strike.Thats where Azerbaijan steps

into the picture.Bases in the country would be

supposedly used for landing andrefueling after the strike has been

    implemented.Israel has received mix messages

from Washington about theirplans to strike Iran.In early March, President Obama

meet with Netanyahu at thisyears American Israel PublicAffairs Committee. During aspeech at the convention Obamatold AIPAC, I have a policy toprevent Iran from obtaining anuclear weapon. I will take no

options off the table, and I meanwhat I say," Obama added. There should not be a shred ofdoubt by now: when the chips aredown, I have Israels back."Apart from his statements the

Obama Administration has beenrather reserved on their stance tosupport Israel if they were toattack and many speculate thisyears election is a major factor." I think this leak today is part ofthe administration's campaign

against an Israeli attack," formerUS diplomat John Bolton saidThursday on Fox News." It's just unprecedented to revealthis kind of information about oneof your own allies, Bolton said.

    According to The Christian

    Science Monitor, Tehran hasq u e s t i o n e d A z e r b a i j a n sinvolvement in the assassinationsof key Iranian nuclear scientists,since the individuals blamed forthe attacks were arrested inAzerbaijan.According to reports, Israeli

    officials have yet to comment onthe allegations." We're watching what Iran doesc l o s e l y , " o n e o f t h e U S

Obama has determined there isenough oil in world markets toallow countries to rely less onimports from Iran, a step thatcould increase Western actions todeter Tehrans nuclear ambitions,an administration official saidFriday.Mr. Obama is required by law to

decide by March 30, and every sixmonths after, whether the priceand supply of non-Iranian oil issufficient to allow for countries to

cut their oil purchases from Iran.Mr. Obamas decision was to be

announced Friday afternoon in aconference call, the official said.He made the decision afterconsultations with a number of oilexporters that had agreed toincrease production. The decisioncomes even as gas prices haverisen in recent months, a rise thathis political advisers say couldhamper his re-election efforts. The new sanctions, passed as part

o f the defense budget and

mandated by the Senate in a rare100-to-0 vote, penalize foreigncorporations or other entities thatpurchase oil from Irans centralbank, which collects payment formost of the countrys energyexports. The penalties are meantto pressure Iran to curb its nuclearprogram. The law includes loopholes that

allow Mr. Obama to waive themeasures if they threaten national

security or if gas prices increase.Gas prices in the United States

have climbed about 19 percentthis year on worries about aconfrontation with Iran, investorspeculation about higher pricesand other factors. A gallon of gascurrently costs an average of$3.93, up from about $3.30 agallon in December. The risingprices have weighed on economicconfidence and cut into householdbudgets, a concern for an Obamaadminis t rat ion seek ing re-

elect ion .But since the law was enacted in

December, the White House hasengaged in a broad effort toprevent supply disruptions thatmight cause prices to spike and topersuade countries around theworld to buy less oil and demanddiscounts from Iran. In the lastthree months, a number of high-ranking officials, includingTimothy F. Geithner, the Treasurysecretary, have traveled aroundthe world to rally support for the

    sanctions.Countries including Saudi Arabia

have increased production tomake up for any lost productionfrom Iran. There is no rationalreason why o i l p r ices arecontinuing to remain at these highlevels, the Saudi oil minister, AliNaimi, wrote in an opinion articlein The Financial Times this week.I hope by speaking out on theissue that our intentions andcapabilities are clear. We wantto see stronger European growth
