Whether you’ve lived in Liberty County for a day or a lifetime,we’re excited you are here! We guarantee that our unique perspective on the community, presented here in our membership Directory and magazine will offer you an intriguing and engaging view on a place we love. Whether it’s our cover story featuring one of our oldest and one of our youngest residents or the editorial look by local writer, Debbie brown on the lifelong relationship between a local couple, we guarantee that you will learn something new and possibly fall in love with this wonderful place all over again. We focused a lot in this magazine on business because as a Chamber that is what we support and who we serve. both new and existing we want them in liberty County, and we want them to be prosperous. We have a feature on some of the newest businesses in our community and another feature on two local youngsters who are athletes in their own right and hope to make it big one day. enjoy the feature on an up-and-coming young gymnast and a dynamic dancer. We have also given you some truly noteworthy and astoundingly beautiful photography courtesy of Alimond Photography and Aliyah Dastour. this year we also have other local photographers featured, namely ryan Willett and monica eusebio, both awesome at capturing the pivotal moment. liberty County is rich in both history and culture, with two signers of the Declaration of independence, a revolutionary War fort with the original earthen works, Dorchester Academy where Civil rights leaders like martin luther King Jr. came to plan important marches like the ones that took place in selma, Al and so much more. We have the original rice dikes as leconte Woodmanston Plantation, beautiful camellia gardens in the historic district of Allenhurst and one of the most picturesque coastlines on the eastern seaboard. those of us who are native to the county are fond of telling newcomers and old timers alike that there is always something to do, something new to see or explore, however, these adventures that await you will take a little searching on your part, and the Chamber/CVb is an excellent place to start mapping out your trek! With an active website at www.libertycounty.org, a Facebook page at liberty Chamber or liberty CVb and twitter where we are @libertyCChamber and @libertyCVb, there are many ways to get plugged in and get active! We are also home to the 3rd iD and Fort stewart, the largest military installation east of the mississippi river, with 20,000+ soldiers in residence at any given moment. Formed as Camp stewart during the advent of World War II, soldiers from our military installation have fought in every major conflict since. our pride and commitment to making our soldiers and their families at home is rock solid, much like their go to phrase “rock of the marne!” And finally this publication would not have been possible without the dedication of the Chamber/CVb staff: Carrie mcDowell, Amanda scott, brandy simon, monica eusebio, brittany shaw and evanne Floyd, you ladies are the best! And mandi spivey and elizabeth beasley at With You in mind Publications made the whole process smooth and seamless, i am still not sure if anything ruffles either of them!

veryone has a dream of what they imagine becoming when they grow up. Many children will cycle through hundreds of ideas before they actually decide and other children will go full force at an early age to pursue that dream. The

number of talented people in Liberty County, whether they are artistic, athletic or really good in some other arena is infinite. The county is home to so many people who have made a significant impact, not just in the county but also in the state and in the nation. Home to three signers of the Declaration of Independence (ok, so one only had a summer home here, we are still counting him!), Liberty County has significant military heroes, as well as scientists such as Joseph LeCounte, a geologist and natural historian who attended Harvard University and later taught at several universities throughout the south. He also co-founded the Sierra Club and published seven books. Two little girls, both natives of Liberty County share a special passion and dedication for the love of their respective sports. Maggie Horton, 6, wants to become a professional gymnast and Mecca Aikens, 12, wants to become a professional dancer. They both have rigorous weekly training schedules they follow but neither of them has ever met until this article and photo shoot.

Georgia.

Liberty County Magazine 11

Page 14: Liberty County Magazine- 2012/2013

Maggie’s love for gymnastics started three years ago at the age of three. Nicole Horton, her mother, said that from the moment she could move she has been on the go. She is always flipping or tumbling. “I like to stand on my head,” said Maggie. Nicole, who was a gymnast when she was younger, decided to give gymnastics a shot and Maggie has not stopped since. Maggie practices four days a week for two and half hours a day, year round at the Liberty County YMCA. Her favorite part of gymnastics is the bars. With such an intense training schedule it requires not only a dedication on Maggie’s part but her family as well. “If your child finds her niche and she absolutely loves it you will do whatever it takes,” said Nicole. Practices contain a lot of strength and conditioning training that can be emotionally and physically exhausting even for the most physically fit person. “I encourage her to stick with it. She has times where she doesn’t like it because of the conditioning,” said Nicole. Maggie also has a training bar and beam at home to make sure she stays in top shape during her off hours. In October 2011, Maggie participated in her first competition and has since completed 5 others. The competitions take place all over the state. So far this 6 year old dynamo has taken home 26 medals, 11 of which were first place. There are 10 levels of gymnastics, 1 to 3

is typically where a gymnast works on basic skills such as body positions and foundations skills. Levels 4 to 6 are typically when they can begin to take part in state competitions and levels 7 to 10 are professionals. Maggie has an incredible talent for her age as evidenced by the fact that she was the only gymnast to qualify for state at a level two from the Liberty County YMCA. When she got to state she was a year and two months younger than the group of gymnasts she was competing against. She has since advanced to a level 3 and will compete in that division this year. Along with this very busy extracicular is the realty that Maggie also has to go to school and get an education. She is a first grader at Joseph Martin Elementary, a typical little girl who loves playing with her friends, dolls, swimming, coloring and playing her cat, Sophie and her dog, Zozo. Maggie’s long term goal is to get a scholarship and become a “Gym Dawg” at the University of Georgia. In particular she loves watching Gym Dawg, Chelsea Davis and Olympic gymnast, Nadia Comaneci. Mecca Aikens, a 7th grade student at Snelson-Golden Middle School, has very similar dreams to Maggie. Mecca wants to go to Juilliard or the Savannah College of Art and Design to continue dancing. She has dreams of being a famous dancer and one day being featured on

and one day being featured on the Disney

Channel and So You Think You Can Dance. She then wants to become a dance

the Disney Channel and So You Think You Can Dance. She then wants to become a dance teacher and open her own dance studio “when she grows up,” she says. She currently dances and trains at Inspirations Performance Studio in Hinesville with instructor, Juanita Lowery. “I’m really glad she’s my dance teacher. She gives me great choreography so I can perform beautifully on stage,” said Mecca. Her training schedule requires 3 hours a day at least 2 days a week. She is a well-rounded dancer and participates in lyrical, contemporary, jazz, ballet, African and modern dance to ensure that she is familiar with all styles of dance. “When dancing comes to life and you can perform in front of people it feels really, really, really good,” Mecca said, explaining that her favorite form of dance is lyrical. When Mecca was around 2 or 3 years of age her mother, Belita Aikens, took her to her first dance class. She was so into dancing to the music and characters on television

14 Liberty County magazine

Page 17: Liberty County Magazine- 2012/2013

that her mom found it fitting to try and interest her daughter in the physical activity versus having her just watch it on television all the time. “I kinda just started liking it. I like to be able to perform on stage in front of my family and friends,” Mecca said. She got serious about dance when she turned 5, surprising her mother and other family members and started competing at the age of nine. They have traveled as far as Macon for competitions so far. She has won a variety of medals for group performance and one gold medal for her solo performance. When Mecca was 10 she received an Access Broadway scholarship to attend a workshop in Atlanta. She says her family is very supportive, “My mom is always backstage helping with costumes and getting ready and then she buys the

DVDs to watch me and my dad works overseas and pays for dance.” Mecca’s dad retired from the United States Army in 2010 after 23 years of service and now works as an electrical contractor. He is gone overseas for 6 months at a time and gets 3 weeks at home in between. Belita stays busy between Mecca and her 6 year old little brother but has no complaints about the dedication her daughter has to dance. “I want her to do it because she wants to. She will be better at it because she enjoys it and is not forced,” Belita said. While she is dedicated to dance she is also dedicated to school and getting a quality education. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and loves to read. Growing up we typically learn about ourselves through achievement, competition and exploration, this is definitely something that Maggie and

Mecca’s parents and families have taken to heart, encouraging the two talented girls to go for the gold every time. Both sets of adults have realized that aptitudes, interests, personality and values are what will shape their children, and they offer the support and challenge their children need to succeed without pushing so hard that the sport becomes their dream and not the dream of the child. The girls have never met, yet they both have so much in common with each other. They both have the dreams, dedication and passion for pursuing their paths at a very young age, making them people you should definitely look for in the future making headlines as products of Liberty County. t first glance when meeting Captain Wild Bill, you may see a rugged fishing guide or

Santa’s helper. You’d be right. But you’ll only skim the surface. Talk to him for a while, and you’ll discover a storyteller, a pirate lover,

a spiritualist, a naturalist, a devoted husband to wife Joyce, and even an Oakland Raiders fan. His love for the Georgia coast shines through. Take a trip with him aboard the Jolly Mon around our coastal waterways, walk on pristine beaches of Georgia

barrier islands, check out the natural beauty, and you’ll see his passion come alive. Sniff the seductive scent of salt marsh. Listen to marsh hens cackle, hidden from view, while bright orange Gulf Fritillary butterflies flitter above

vibrant marshes, far from land. Hear fish splashes. Open your mind. Let the senses rush in. Select from endless options with Captain Wild Bill, owner of Coastal Georgia Adventures. Schedule a sunset cruise, eco-tour, dolphin sighting, beach trip, or a guided fishing tour in search of Wild Bill’s favorite fish, Flounder, or Sheepshead, Seatrout, Shark, Tarpon, and Reds. Cast a net for Georgia White Shrimp. Or catch Georgia Blue Crabs. Customize a tour to see a circa-1800 shipwreck in the shifting sands of Sapelo Island or the creepy crematorium from Yellow Fever-days on Blackbeard Island. Photograph boneyard beaches or secluded hideaways. Hike sun-dappled trails beneath canopies of live oaks dripping in silvery Spanish moss, serenaded by male Painted Buntings

and the insistent buzz of cicadas. Step lightly, watching for chards of brown clay pottery or white Indian midden shells. Breathe in, breath out, like the ever-changing tide. You’ll enter Captain Wild Bill’s world. “Very few people realize what a special coast we have,” Wild Bill shared. “Liberty County offers the best launch to access it.” He leaves from Yellow Bluff, a private marina community, but Half Moon Marina and Sunbury are open to the public. Only accessible by boat, St. Catherines, Ossabaw, Sapelo, and Blackbeard Island offer wonders not imagined until you step foot on them. “Georgia allows individuals public beach access on our barrier islands,” he said. Interior portions of Ossabaw and St. Catherines are off-limits, save for research. He continued, “State owned Ossabaw Island is a popular beach destination. It’s a twenty-five minute boat ride.” He slipped the ropes from dock hooks, and relayed a conversation he had with Ossabaw resident Sandy West and her feelings about the island. “She told me there’s a meridian of the Earth running through Ossabaw, bringing all of the forces together create a mystical place,” he said. Acupuncturists believe meridians in the body bridge the physical with the mental, spiritual, and emotional. Ossabaw, shaped like a V, boasts an estuary in the center of the island. It’s one of Georgia’s largest barrier islands with 9000 acres of uplands and freshwater ponds, 16,000 acres of marshland, and 10 miles of public beaches. Wood Storks, Great Egrets, and other wading birds flourish. The journey with Captain Wild Bill continued, meandering through area waterways. A startled Green Heron perched on a blade of marsh grass flew up in a flurry of wings and disappeared. Wind and salt, sun and sea reigned

20 Liberty County magazine

Blackbeard Island (ABOVE), named for the infamous pirate Edward Teach, is designated as a national wildlife refuge. “It’s wild and raw,” Wild Bill said of the 5618 acre island, “and a favorite with 340 acres of breathtaking white beaches with crashing waves and lush interiors for hiking.”

“I’m mindful when birding, fishing or meditating. It makes me feel better.”

supreme. Captain Wild Bill, in his element, explained the importance of the marsh to the life cycle, beginning with the smallest organisms. “I’m obsessed with marsh grass, Spartina alterniflora,” he confessed. “The marsh speaks to me. It provides habitat for so many,” he said. “Even when it breaks down to wrack, it feeds animals like oysters.” He sighed. “In nature, it’s all about the food.” In no time, Wild Bill’s thoughts turn to fishing; a passion established early with his dad, nicknamed Country because of his love for the outdoors. “Mom said I sat on Dad’s lap when only one-year-old while he fished in St. Pete or the rivers near our home in Mt. Airy, NC and the Blue Ridge Mountains.” Later Wild Bill recalls a fly fishing trip at age ten with his step-dad. Pete, decked out in full fishing regalia, stood in thigh-high, cold water with his fishing buddies. Wild Bill, relegated to stay on the hot bank and not allowed to fish, looked for shade. He noticed something unusual. “The fish were in the shade,” he confided. “A distinct line separated the fish hanging out in the shade and the

sunny area.” He paused, remembering. “Now, I know it was a current break and easier for the fish, not having to fight moving currents.” Bored, Wild Bill threw a grasshopper into the water. Water popped, kicked around, and the grasshopper disappeared. “Wow!” “So I caught grasshoppers and planned my fishing trip while the men had no luck catching fish.” Before daylight, Wild Bill walked to the campsite dock, used every grasshopper, and returned at sunrise with a bucket of fish. “Everyone was mad because I had gone off without telling anyone,” he said, “until they saw all of the fish I caught.” Wild Bill spent the rest of the day giving fishing advice to the fishermen. “I learned early,” he said, “to keep my eyes open, to observe, and to experiment.” Wild Bill scans the water, looking for signs of fish as tiny, white Least Terns circle overhead, then drop from the sky to the water’s surface with a splash. He turns the boat in their direction and motions toward ruffled water, moving to the bow of the boat to get a look from a higher perspective. “May be a shark.”

He grabs his rod and reel, leans back, and throws out toward the ruffling. His float bobbles, then dunks. “Got it! He reels the shark in. Blood spatters his shorts as he removes the hook and releases the Shark back to the sea. Soon the Tripletail swims just beneath the water’s surface. He casts his line. “Here he comes,” he cried. “He’s going after the shrimp… Yes. Yes. Yes.” The fish fights harder than the Shark. “Grab the net and catch him.” He poses for a photo before releasing the Tripletail. Excitement lingers as Captain Wild Bill turns toward St. Catherines Island, a twenty-minute boat ride from the Liberty County coast. St. Catherines, a local favorite and National Historic Landmark, offers a diverse landscape of beaches and almost prehistoric-looking high cliffs with a backdrop of massive live oaks, ancient cedars, native palms, and loblolly pines – all shaped by wind, storms, and the sea. “Everything seems larger here,” Wild Bill said. “Plants, alligators, lizards. Everything.” History abounds on the 10-mile-long, 14000 acre island, owned and operated by the St. Catherines Foundation: hunting grounds for the Guale Indians,

the site of a Spanish Mission, and Declaration of Independence signer Button Gwinnett’s plantation. A black separatist movement took root here after the Civil War. Wild Bill points to a popular local beach on the North end, affectionately called Redneck Riviera during summer weekends and holidays. The boat passes backwater creeks on the way to Sapelo and Blackbeard, both islands about an hour from Liberty County. Captain Wild Bill’s passion for the islands and fishing led to getting his captain’s license, to bird watching, and to becoming a University of Georgia-certified naturalist. “They force me to be still, to watch, listen and hear my inner voice.” “My best times surface at sunrise with a sense of renewal, and when sunset promises rest,” he said. “Dawn and dusk, with their brilliant colors, bring the red birds out. It’s a great time to pray during Cardinal time.” “I’m mindful when birding, fishing, or meditating. It makes me feel better.” He listens for the bird’s song first, and then he spots the bird. “It brings the child out.” “Our coast is a year-round home to many wading birds, but we’re also on the migratory path for butterflies, ducks and hummingbirds.” From mid-April to late August, our coast is the number one habitat for Painted Buntings. As members of Friends of Sapelo, Captain Wild Bill and wife Joyce, a CENTURY 21 Ways Station realtor and coastal photographer, enjoy helping to preserve the island. “Its location provides a rare opportunity for research,” he said, “since the island is surrounded by 16,000 acres of pristine marsh.” The University of Georgia Marine Institute (UGAMI) and the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (SINERR) conduct research on Sapelo. Most of Sapelo is owned by the

State, but one percent belongs to Hog Hammock’s Gullah residents. Groups may stay overnight at Cabretta Campground or at Reynold’s Mansion, a historic estate. Blackbeard Island, named for the infamous pirate Edward Teach, is designated as a national wildlife refuge. “It’s wild and raw,” Wild Bill said of the 5618 acre island, “and a favorite with 340 acres of breathtaking white beaches with crashing waves and lush interiors for hiking.” Whether Captain Wild Bill hops in his boat alone or with a group, he realizes his greatest inspiration comes from Joyce, his wife of 23 years. Together they explore the islands and all they offer. It’s no secret. They’re wild about nature. LCM

Dancingthrough life

by Debra Ayers Brownphotos by Alimond Photography

With life’s joys and challenges,

the couple continued to

blend smoothly, enjoying their partnership, while moving

to life’s music.

Ray and Gale Dent have kept dancing through life. Whether a foxtrot, slow dance, or cha-cha, they’ve moved with a natural rhythm. Some days marking time, waiting for their cue, or dealing with the ups and downs, little quirks, and the rise and fall of daily life. But the couple has accomplished all with practiced steps based on faith, family, commitment, and fun.

With life’s joys and challenges, the couple continued to blend smoothly, enjoying their partnership, while moving to life’s music.

Even today, Gale followed Ray’s informal lead, setting the rhythm of the visit.

“Yes, Honey,” Ray Dent conceded to wife Gale’s request to sit down at the table. “I learned a long time ago that I’m happy if she’s happy,” he said with a wink, leaned on his elbows on the glass tabletop, and popped a salty cracker in his mouth.

She patted his arm and laughed, settling back in the chair in the light-filled room overlooking her Serendipity Garden.

“It’s like a small rain forest out there,” Ray teased between bites, motioning toward the expansive windows. “Gale’s a master gardener.” He couldn’t hide his admiration.

“I love all plant kind. If I see it on HGTV, then I want it,” Gale admitted and pulled out her phone to scroll through her Serendipity Garden Facebook page. “I post photos from my garden,” she said, “and from others.”

The wife, mother, and cool granny of nine grandchildren and three great-grands, showed off her gardening talents and an obvious green thumb. “I’m going to get Ray to make me a sign for my garden,” she shared. “I want it to read, ‘You are entering a stress free zone.”’ She sighed. “That’s exactly what I want it to say.”

Her ringtone signaled an incoming call. She punched it to silence.

“No phones allowed,” she added, reflecting. “Why would my grandkids bring my cell to me outside to take a call? I just don’t understand.”

thinking, hard work, and perseverance,” Gale professed. “It was a thrill to meet Mr. Fryar,” she said with near reverence.

The Dents are used to being around celebrities.Looking around the family home, Gale’s collections

would draw your immediate attention. Tea pots, chickens, and memorabilia picked up while traveling, during assignments in Europe, and when living along the East Coast would encourage inspection. You could ramble through a box of materials for Gale’s jewelry designs, thumb through gardening magazines, or admire her paintings for a new art class. You could get lost in the scent of spices in the kitchen while afghans, crochet, dolls, and scrapbooking eased into the conversation.

With a smooth move, she’d probably escort you right by the photo of her famous brother, Morgan Freeman.

Gale probably won’t even mention it.Like his wife of forty-five years, Ray, unless prompted,

won’t talk about his college days at A & T College in Greensboro, NC, where he and Jesse Jackson were classmates. If pressed, he might fill you in on the details.

“I tutored Jesse in algebra,” he said, staring in the distance, remembering. “He was smart, but he just didn’t like math.” He paused, and then a broad grin lit his face. “When we had finals, he did better than I did.” He laughed. “I asked him to explain. Jesse shrugged, admitting he hadn’t

Her garden echoes her passion for plants of all varieties, fragrances, colors, and seasons.

Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, Biltmore Gardens in Asheville, Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, and Hollis Gardens in Lakeland, Florida are favorite destinations of both Gale and Ray.

“We like them all — formal gardens, historic structures, horticultural showplaces, wildlife, and informal ones,” she said. “But Epcot is our all-time favorite.”

Ray nodded. “It better be with all the stuff they have there.”

Gale laughed. “We especially like gardens with trolleys to take us everywhere.” Her eyes sparkled, and Ray grinned. “We say it’s an old folks’ theme park for us.” She giggled. “The trolley is our roller coaster.”

But their sense of awe and wonder didn’t stop at these gardens.

They traveled to Bishopville, SC to see the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden and to meet the man who was made internationally famous with the documentary, A Man Named Pearl.

In unison, they described the beauty of Pearl’s three hundred individual plants, few spared from intricate pruning, and the “junk art” sculptures placed throughout the garden.

“His garden’s a testament to his belief in positive

had time to focus on algebra until he studied with me.” Ray graduated from Tarkio College in Missouri.

Ray, a New Jersey native, might share why he never made it to Ft. Stewart while in the Army. Though he served for seven years as enlisted, he completed OCS in 1969, and later ended up stationed at Ft. Campbell, working under Colin Powell. “I had first worked with him in Korea, and I didn’t want to leave Ft. Campbell, and the opportunity to work with him again.”

“I retired from the military as a Major while stationed at Virginia Beach.”

“But I made him get another job,” Gale said, grinning. “I had to kick him out of the house.” She nudged her husband. “He was driving the dog crazy. Every time he saw a hair, he’d get the vacuum cleaner. The poor dog didn’t know what to think.”

The Dent’s dog, General Sherman, was a true Army dog.

“When the suitcases hit the floor, he sat by them, ready to go,” Gale said. “That was back when I could pack up a house in a day. Now … well, I’ll leave all my stuff for my children to handle.”

“And now the cat, Baby Girl, rules the house,” she admitted.

Ray tapped his fingers on the table, nodding.

“We’ve enjoyed all of our posts,” he said. “Like I said earlier, as long as Gale was happy, I was happy.”

But they almost didn’t meet.Gale grew up in Clarksville, Tennessee, where she

attended Austin Peay. As an LPN, she trained to work in ER and CCU through her career. Early on, she worked seven days on/seven days off at Parkview Hospital in Nashville.

“A friend kept bringing Ray to church to meet me, but I was never home at the right time. Our schedules were out of step.”

“But I met the family,” he said, “and I had dinner with her nine hundred relatives.” He sighed. “I got to eat first with the men. Now, I eat last.”

“Ray,” she groaned. He gave her a quick hug. Finally, they met, fell in love, and married on September

9, 1967 after dating for six weeks. The match lasted and resulted in three children, Carmen

Annette, Bridget Elaine, and Raymond Daniel.“We’ve had a busy life,” Gale said. “I can’t imagine

how anyone could be bored.”Indeed.Except for a three-year stint in real estate, Gale’s

twenty-five-year nursing career led her to Coastal Manor and other nursing homes in Bryan County and in Pooler.

“She’s always had a halo around her,” Ray said.“And he hits the floor talking in the morning and keeps

talking until night.”His outgoing personality and strong work ethic served

him well in the Army. Ray retired from the military after teaching ROTC at Norfolk State, and they lived in Virginia Beach. In 1984, he joined the corporate world and moved to Hinesville with the Devon Home Center Store. He later

served as the first Director of the YMCA and established the Pryme Tyme program, and then joined OMI as an Operation Manager. He used his leadership skills as Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce (6 years), the MLK Association, Emancipation Association, Eleven Black Men (President and member), the PIC Council, Hi-Fidelity Club, and more.

Now, he serves as a church elder at Bethesda Church, enjoys golf and traveling, and serving as the Hinesville Farmer’s Market Manager.

“And I go with him and sit out in the heat every Thursday,” Gale said. “And that’s true love.”

It’s a love that shines in a warm home with a feeling of family, community involvement, and varied travels and interests — a home, inviting and begging for exploration.

No doubt in the discovery, you’d find a welcoming smile and frisky banter between a man who loved to dance, and a woman who idolized Tina Turner.

“She has the legs,” Ray said. “And he still has the moves.”In their own way, Ray and Gale Dent have learned to

move as one, lightly and smoothly, with the gentleman’s lead clear, and the lady’s follow responsive and precise.

And, like a slow dance after a quick spin around the floor with a favorite partner, you’d want the music to keep playing so you could linger with the fascinating couple. It’d be easy to pray for an encore to sway to the music, kick up your heels, and sing along. Stroll through time with a couple who has made it look easy to love music, and love to dance. LCM

The Liberty County Chamber of Commerce is all about promoting and supporting business. That means all business, large or small. We understand that in these times, it is much more difficult for small businesses to make it in the vast ocean of chain stores and big-name businesses. However, that doesn’t mean that they can’t make it. We at the Chamber work hand in hand with small businesses every day, and completely understand that with the unwavering dedication these business owners show to their companies, they can make quite a name for themselves in our thriving community. Last year we applauded businesses in Liberty County that have withstood the test of time. Businesses that started with their shallow roots in Liberty’s humble soil, and have now blossomed into some of the county’s premier businesses. This year, we would like to do the opposite and celebrate the newbies, for without them, Liberty County could never continue its exponential growth.

CrossFit Hinesville has been in business for almost a year now. It began when Tina and Rowdy Carson moved to Hinesville from Springfield, Missouri. They noticed that Hinesville didn’t have a program like CrossFit, something Tina and Rowdy had been heavily involved with before their move. “We saw that Liberty County needed a good fitness community to attend,” Tina said. So with that ever-present determination of small-business owners, Tina and Rowdy found a location and opportunity and jumped on it. “Our goal is to make fitness fun and enjoyable for the entire family,” Tina said.

CrossFit has now grown nationally as a method of exercise for all ages and experience levels. “We offer a program that anyone can be a part of and still get great results,” Tina said. CrossFit offers diet and exercise programs that they guarantee you will love and stick to. As of right now, CrossFit has only 1 paid employee, all additional coaches are volunteers who apply their time to help get Liberty County in shape. From the time CrossFit Hinesville opened their doors with around 15 members, they have now grown to be 150+ members strong.

Tina and Rowdy are proud to say that they have built the fitness community they envisioned when moving to Hinesville. And beyond that, they have built a family along the way. “You walk in the door and you have a community; this is definitely a family,” Tina says of their young, but successful business. Make sure to check out their free intro classes every Saturday morning from 9:00 – 10:00 AM. Membership fees are $85 a month; for more information call (912)-385-3837. “The lifestyle of fitness we have created will change your body and mind for the better,” says Tina.

Our next small business is one that is unique in Liberty County, as it is the only hobby and game store in the area. Jungle Jake’s opened their doors in 2010, and have now been in business for two years. The shop was started by owner Jason Lee and wife, Dakhine. “We started out as a comic book shop in 2010 in a small space downtown. We loved the idea of having a small business in the downtown setting, in order to participate in downtown events and festivals, all the while building a community of comic book lovers in the downtown area. Since then, we have moved away from the focus on just comic books and have now expanded to games and hobbies,” said Jason.

Now located at 312B Memorial Drive, Jungle Jake’s is a destination for soldiers and young gamers alike. The games sold in the shop are “unplugged” and interactive. They require strategy and imagination. “Painting miniatures is an art form that has been around for many years. The table-top games we sell are hobbies in that players create their own armies, literally assembling and painting, to battle in small-scale wars. We not only sell games for our customers to play, but also offer the space to play them,” Jason said of the games offered. Weekly events are planned in which customers can interact with each other and have fun with like-minded people.

Jason and Dakhine feel that they have created a sanctuary of sorts for soldiers looking for a creative outlet. “Another thing that makes our business unique is that it provides a place for soldiers to become part of a community outside of the Army. Many of our customers are soldiers who have said that coming to our shop keeps them ‘out of trouble’. They have said that they like being able to use their creativity to do something productive. We’ve built a gaming community and a loyal group who enjoy playing in the shop. We are very thankful for the people who patronize our shop and help our events grow. We know that our customers can buy these same games online, but when they support our shop, they are also supporting a community,” Jason said. Jungle Jake’s is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 5-9 PM and opens at 10:30 AM on Saturdays. For more information call (912)-344-1338.

By the time this is published, Le’ Jolie Hair and Tanning Salon will have been open for a full year. This classy salon gives the feel of city style, while still in the charming reaches of Liberty County. Owner Andrea Gordon opened the salon’s doors in September of 2011. “I felt that Liberty County needed a high-end salon with a friendly, knowledgeable staff that brings a touch of ‘the city’ to our small town. We’re in a great location that has a lot of potential for a salon like Le’ Jolie,” Andrea said. Le’ Jolie offers a variety of services such as teeth whitening, full tanning services, hair styling and makeup consulting. They also pride themselves on their exceptionally clean facility and ever-friendly staff.

Le’ Jolie started with a staff of nine, and currently holds the same amount, showing their dedication to their work in that same small-business oriented manner. They have a large inventory of retail products, as well as a makeup and skin care consultant on-site to provide assistance the moment you walk through the door. “I am passionate about finding a way to help women look as awesome on the outside as they feel on the inside. I love being a part of that transformation,” Andrea said. Like any small business, Le’ Jolie wants to become known in the community.

Admit it, you have a sweet tooth; everyone does. This next business is sure to sate your appetite for something cool and sweet, especially during the stifling summer months in Georgia. Yogurt Café has been in business for a year at this time. Offering an assortment of self-serve frozen yogurt with a smorgasbord of toppings to choose from, you’re sure to find something delicious to suit your tastes in this retro-themed restaurant. Yogurt Café is unique in the frozen yogurt business in that they serve full course, home-cooked meals daily as well, making them very popular in the community.

“We have owned and operated restaurants for over thirty years. Our love for frozen yogurt and cooking for others inspired us to open Yogurt Café,” said owner Glenn Poole. Upon opening last year, Glenn had a staff of only three, and has now grown to accommodate eight employees, showing once again that with dedication, you can surely nurture a small business into a stable establishment in Liberty County. One of the things we at the Chamber hear most about Yogurt Café is the great environment. With a retro-look on the inside, you almost feel as if you’ve stepped back in time to a diner straight out of Happy Days, with the addition of some awesome frozen yogurt. As if all this isn’t enough, Yogurt Café offers a 10% discount on frozen yogurt to all military, teachers, law enforcement officials and medical staff, and a 15% discount on all menu items, including frozen yogurt, to Chamber members. Yogurt Café is located at 809 Willowbrook Drive, Suite 106. Call (912)-463-4709 for more information.

The last business we’d like to give a nod to may surprise you. Vaden Nissan of Hinesville opened their temporary location in August of 2010, and only recently moved into their new location in May of 2012. It is the newest addition in the Vaden Automotive Group family of dealerships serving the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry. At their beginning in 2010, Vaden Nissan had only eight employees; upon moving to their newly constructed location, they have grown to a team of twenty-five. We like to think this is what all businesses in Liberty County can do with time and commitment, no matter how humble their origins. It gives the Chamber great joy to see businesses in Liberty County thrive as Vaden Nissan has done, and we wish to see the same for more small businesses in the area.

“We are the only import, new vehicle franchise

dealer as well as the only female-owned dealership in the market,” says Brandon Rodgers, General Manager at Vaden Nissan of Hinesville. The number-one priority of the entire staff at Vaden Nissan is to exceed all expectations of each individual that walks through their door by offering quality service during and after the sale of a new or used vehicle. “We see so much opportunity for growth in the area, and we firmly believe that there is plenty of business to support an import automotive dealership such as Vaden Nissan,” says Rodgers.

idway, a small historic town nestled in eastern Liberty County, has something for the entire family. Are you looking for affordable housing,

daycare centers, award winning schools, worship centers, employment, shopping, banking, medical and dental needs, dining, fire and police protection and leisure time activities? Then Midway is the place where you want to be. Midway offers a variety of single and two story homes that are strategically located throughout the City. The educational needs of children are met through several privately owned daycare centers, Liberty Elementary and Midway Middle Schools. The two schools are within walking distance of four planned communities located in a quiet, safe environment that assures uninterrupted learning. Students may complete after school projects by using the facilities of the Midway/Riceboro Library Branch. For spiritual edification, seven worship centers (five denominations) are opened to all who will come. The Midway Industrial Park, along with Trade Port

East which is located just outside the city limits, provides excellent opportunities for those who are seeking employment. Shopping in Midway is fun! A grocery store, retail shops, quick marts, and auto businesses offer an array of items to meet your needs. Financial services are available and are provided by two financial institutions. Financial services can also be secured through four tax businesses that are located throughout the city. The unusual historic city has a dentist, an Internal Medicine Specialist, a health care center and a pharmacy to serve your medical needs. Unlike many small towns, Midway has a wide variety of dine-in or take-out establishments that offers a variety of selections that include seafood, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, sandwiches and home cooked breakfast and lunch. The safety of our citizens is of utmost concern to the Midway City Council. The Midway Police Department

is staffed with a chief and four highly trained officers who are consistently visible and provides twenty-four hour protection throughout the City. The City’s Municipal Court is under the auspices of the police department. The Midway Volunteer Fire Department responds to more than twenty calls per month. All the firemen are certified and several are trained as first responders. During leisure time, the entire family can tour the grounds of the Historical Old Midway Congregational Church; or take a quantum leap back in time and ease through the Midway Colonial Museum and Cemetery; or picnic at Cay Creek Wetlands and Interpretive Center and take a nature stroll down the board walk to view the marshlands, beavers, turtles, and species of birds and snakes. Use our city to connect to all of Liberty County and all it has to offer. Think of us when considering a new home location or starting a new business.

Each year hundreds of individuals volunteer their time at the Recreation Department to help make a difference in the quality of life in Liberty County. Most volunteer to coach the many youth sports teams formed each year. However, there are many improvements and expansions that could be made with the assistance of other volunteers.

Other volunteer positions include coordinators for Special Events, Volunteer Resources, Publicity, Commercial Sponsorship, Sports, Park Overwatch, and Community Service. Helpers are also needed for administrative/clerical work, concessions, bus drivers, chaperones, scorers, timers, and grounds maintenance.

You may find that this is a great way to have a positive influence on your children and their friends. You may even have the special skills or abilities needed to help start a new program. Volunteering may be used as a means to gain experience to help you obtain future employment.

Meet Dominick Kukula Cuevas and the late Dorothy Brunson in this

article that offers insight into the melting pot that is Liberty County.

Page 60: Liberty County Magazine- 2012/2013

We present this article in tribute to Mrs. Dorothy Rhina Wynn Stewart Brunson, who departed this life on August 12, 2012, two

months after posing for the photos being used and agreeing to serve as one of our cover models.

When formed in 1777, Liberty County was made up of the Colonial parishes of St. John, St. James and St. Andrew. In fact Long and McIntosh counties were drawn from original territory within Liberty’s boundaries. But it’s the name, the name of the county that intrigues and instills in her natives and newcomers a sense of community, pride and true welcome to a diverse and varied population. The name was decided on to honor the settlers of Midway who were the most uncompromising champions of independence and were the first to send delegates to the Continental Congress, establishing Liberty’s long history of fighting for her people, creating safe harbors and spawning true statesmen. The cover story celebrates that diversity of culture by exploring the lives of two very different people, both residents of Liberty County, who embody the spirit that makes the community unique and something to be admired. First is Dominic Kukula Cuevas, who will turn one in September of this year but was photographed as a nine-month old. The son of Staff Sargent Javier Cuevas-Guillen, 34 and Ashley Kukula Cuevas, 27, Dominic came to Liberty County an unborn child who has since grown to make his mark on everyone he meets. Meeting in the salsa dancing community in Syracuse, New York, Javier, who was born in Mexico, and Ashley were casual dancing acquaintances for some time before getting married in April 2010. With 10 years in the Army as a Medical Equipment Technician/

Maintenance, after their marriage Javier deployed for a year to South Korea. After his return they were given orders for Fort Stewart, which they now come home. “When Javier first picked me up from the airport, the first thing I was excited about was the trees. The very first thing I did when I opened the car door in Hinesville was waddle (I was pregnant) to a tree to find out what that moss looked like up close. Each place I've lived seems to have something amazing nature-wise. In Georgia it has been all the different kinds of trees! Negatives are definitely the bugs and flies in your face during the summer, but we love that we are so close to fun things,” said Ashley. Javier relays the same message, noting other local plants and the proximity to the water as things that he has loved about Liberty County. No slouch herself in accomplishing her career goals, Ashley is both an artist and a teacher, with a Bachelors in Art Education from Nazareth College, a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Sate University, and she is working on her Gifted Education certification extension through Nazareth. She has also volunteered extensively which is something she hopes to pass along to Dominic one day, that love for giving back. Not one to rest on her laurels Ashley quickly got involved with the Hinesville Area Arts Council upon moving to the community and has since become an artist in the co-op program, teaching both adult and children’s art classes throughout the

own personal traditions are important, it is only part of the lifestyle that they live because they want Dominic to experience all that life has to offer. Both offer advice on learning to fail as many times as needed to Dominic, saying that it’s okay as long as you get up and continue to live so you can work to lose that fear of failure and gain persistence. Secondly, the juxtaposition between the lives of Dominic and our other cover model, Mrs. Dorothy Brunson, increased our awareness of how very special Liberty County is. The last child of Peter and Charlotte Wynn, Dorothy was accompanied to the photo shoot by her daughter and son-in-law, Ernestine and Charley Anderson. Sitting in a straight backed chair in a formal blue suit, her signature color, while she awaited the specified time, Dorothy chatted with Ashley about Dominic and even got to know some of the other featured people from throughout the publication. The children present (of which there were many) steered clear of the formidable woman, recognizing her as deserving of respect and reverence. Bringing a hush to the studio, Dorothy was led to the chair for the cover shoot. Her initial facial expression? Dour, unsmiling and well probably what one would expect from someone who was 102 years old, someone born in 1909. However, as soon as the bundle of smiles and charm that is Dominic Kukula Cuevas was put into her arms the change was immediate. Tracking that progress, from unsmiling to grinning as wide as a Cheshire cat was photographer Aliyah Dastour. “It was amazing to see and an inspiring thing to be able to capture Mrs. Brunson in what would be the

last several weeks of her life. Having lived that long, experienced that much and still retained her joy in the innocence of a child is a lesson we can all learn, “said Aliyah. With four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, Dorothy was no stranger to young people and visibly became the special lady that everyone saw throughout her long life when confronted with Dominic’s infectious joy. Baptized around the age of 12 in what is now being called the Riceboro Historic Baptismal Interpretive Trail but was called the “round hole” at the time, Dorothy was at the ceremony late last year to help break ground on the wooden platform being built above the pool of water where it has been said people were baptized as early as the late 1800s. At the time she was the only person surviving who had been baptized in the pool, which still has worn earthen stairs visible to construction and work crews. Acknowledging the vast disparity in ages between our cover models is important, however, it is also valuable to point out that while neither had ever met the other they both bonded visibly, prompting those in the room to smiles of their own and that is the beauty of Liberty County. Where else can you go in this vast country and experience the level of cultural and ethnic diversity, over 37 cultures represented at last count, and not only see people enjoy one another and experience the common decency a lot of places have forgotten, but also truly be impacted and impact those around them? From young to old Liberty County is a place to call home at any time while creating memories that will last a lifetime. LCM

S St. Catherine’s Island is one of Liberty County’s barrier islands and a former home to many exotic species, a past residence of a Declaration of Independence signer and an archeological gold mine. However, for many locals, it is just a favorite summer hangout. Ten miles long and ranging from one to three miles wide, the undeveloped island is mostly tidal marsh and wetlands. Privately owned by the St. Catherine’s Island Foundation, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1969 because of the rich human history that has unfolded within its boundaries. As long as 4,000 years ago, the Guale Indians called the island home. They established a “chiefdom, which is ruled by hereditary and semi-divine chief, was typically a multiple organization, with a population in the low thousands,” according to The New Georgia Encyclopedia. In the late 1500s, Spanish Franciscan friars established a mission outpost on the island, in an attempt to convert the Indians to Christianity and in 1597, the Indians revolted, burning the original mission to the ground. A long history of give and take was to continue on the island with the Franciscan friars and Spanish authorities established the Mission Santa Catalina de Guale in 1605 ushering in an era of successful missions along the Southeastern coast. A peaceful relationship existed until 1645 when Indian uprisings, pirate raids, disease and European pressure pushed the Spanish off the island leaving an abandoned mission in 1680. In the 1730s, James Oglethorpe, the founder of Savannah, claimed St. Catherine’s as part of the Georgia colony. However, Oglethorpe’s interpreter, Mary Musgrove, asserted that she and her husband had been awarded the island and others by the Creek Indian, Chief Malatchi. Musgrove, who was the daughter of a Creek woman and English man and later married an Englishmen, won the court battle after a decade long campaign and was awarded St. Catherine’s. Musgrove was as important to the Georgia colony as Pocahontas was to Jamestown and Sacagawea was to the Lewis and Clark expedition in that she was instrumental in the peaceful settling of Georgia. She took “advantage of her biculturalism to protect Creek interests,

ideas about Spanish missions, many promising artifacts have been discovered and studied intently. “We were startled by the remarkable artifacts we found—gold and silver medallions, silver sacred heart rings, bells, mirrors, several complete ceramic vessels, and more than 65,000 glass trade beads,” said David Hurst Thomas, in a past article for the American Museum of Natural History. Thomas was responsible for finding the remains of the Mission Santa Catalina de Guale in 1987. This find confirmed, “Spanish missions existed in Georgia nearly two centuries before the Spanish missions in California. His

Later in her life, Musgrove leased part of the island to Button Gwinnett, one of Liberty County’s Declaration of Independence signers. He lived on St. Catherine’s until his death in 1777. The “Button Gwinnett House” still stands, however it has not been determined if the house really was that of Gwinnett. One of the later owners of the island called it the Walburg House, after a German owner of the Island, according to Royce Hayes, current superintendent of the island. Moving forward during the 1800s, the island was split into several independently owned and operated farms, but in 1852, all of the holdings of were transferred to Jacob Walburg. Another change in 1863 and the island ownership was transferred to Captain Rodriguez, who is believed to have married one of Walburg’s daughters. Rodriguez brought a hint of danger to the island as he was reputed to be a gun smuggler for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. In 1870, the island was purchased by John J. Rauers of Savannah. He constructed a large home and game preserve, which was then demolished by an 1898 hurricane. Edward John Noble purchased St. Catherine’s in 1943 and established a Black Angus cattle operation. After his death, the island was transferred to the Edward John Noble Foundation and then acquired by the St. Catherine’s Island Foundation. Despite an interesting history, the artifacts found on the island are what make it famous. Challenging conventional

discoveries also verified that Santa Catalina was the first planned settlement by the Spanish in Georgia,” according to The New Georgia Encyclopedia. In the 1960s, a report developed to guide Island excavation and development said the “discovery of the Mission was as important as finding Jamestown,” which at that point had not yet been discovered, said Hayes. After its discovery and excavation, The Mission became a consecrated Catholic Church, associated with the Catholic Diocese of Savannah. Although there is not an actual building, services have been held in honor of the slain Spanish missionaries in the past. In 2004, more then a million objects were moved to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History in Atlanta for display and further research. Besides archeologists, St. Catherine’s has hosted many other exciting guests. The St. Catherine’s Island Wildlife Survival Center hosted numerous endangered animals as a chance to increase their numbers through breeding. In 1974, animal importation began with gemsbok, a large horned antelope. Other animals that have been on the island include Maleo, Red-Fronted Macaws, Gopher Tortoises, Lemurs, American Bald Eagles, Zebras, Kangaroos and more. The Wildlife Survival Center has been successful in the captive breeding of endangered species, credited with continuing their survival, said Hayes. Many of the exotic animals have been removed, taken to more permanent homes; however, there is still a large population of lemurs, the two oldest hornbills in the country (and possibly the world), plus numerous species of birds. One such species, the Oyster Catcher is a small bird whose eggs are susceptible to danger and being stolen from the nest. Although Island workers could take the eggs and let them hatch in captivity,

Endangered Species Coastal Georgia is home to many endangered sea animals. Of the list the most commonly heard of are the Right Whale and the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. However, this is far from the entirety of endangered animals within Liberty County. The following information was made available through the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Georgia Ecological Services Field Offices. Migrating sea animals, whose path leads them by Liberty County, include the Humpback Whale, the West Indian Manatee and four additional types of sea turtles, some of which nest on area beaches. Many are surprised to learn of the whales and manatees that join our coastal population. The Right Whale is of particular concern in Liberty County because females calve 5-15 nautical miles off shore (roughly 6-17 “land” miles). The whales are in danger of coming in contact with boat motors in such shallow waters and boaters are required to vacate the area if one is spotted. The Humpback Whale is less commonly seen off the coast. Liberty County is simply a part of its migration, as it normally resides in warm, tropical water during the winter and cold, polar waters during the summer. The West Indian Manatee is most commonly seen in Florida during the winter months, however summer sightings off the Liberty coastline are not rare. The Manatees are under strict government protection and it is suggested that boaters give them a wide berth. There are also several types of birds and reptiles that are located in the area. The Kirtland’s Warbler and the Piping Clover, both small birds, are commonly seen along the coastal region. The Kirtland’s Warbler migrates

through the area to its wintering grounds in the Bahamas. The Piping Clover winters on the Georgia coast and prefers an environment close to the beach with expansive sand or mud flats. The Wood Stork, which is seen throughout Southeastern wetlands, can be found around Liberty County. They feed primarily on fresh and brackish wetlands, while preferring to nest in cypress or wooded swamps. Also living in the wetlands, is the Frosted Flatwoods Salamander. The salamander prefers a habitat of isolated cypress ponds with a marsh-like appearance. This salamander also serves as the mascot for the Liberty County Convention and Visitors Bureau. There have been numerous reports of Bald Eagles within our county lines as well. In 2011, a black bear was sighted in Midway. Because of the dense wooded areas in Liberty County, it is impossible to know what all resides within the boundary lines.

Bottlenose Dolphins Bottlenose dolphins elicit admiration from many people. Whether it is their keen senses, playful attitude or friendliness, no one seems to know why dolphins have such a strong fan club. Dolphins have very good vision both in and out of the water. A gland in the corner of each secretes mucus, which protects the eye from salt water. However, they mostly use sonar for orientation and detecting prey. Swimming is of course their strong suite. Using their fluke, or tail, to shoot through the water, the average cruising speed is 5 to 7 miles per hour. They can swim up to 30 mph. Dolphins have incredible hearing for the size of their ears. They are social animals, communicating through a system of squeaks and whistles. There are even documented cases of dolphins coming to the aid of other dolphins and protecting humans from sharks. Bottle Nose dolphins lives in pods consisting of a few males, several females and babies. The average size is about 15, although pods can temporarily join together and consist of a hundred or so.

Male dolphins can reach seven to ten feet long, and weigh between 300 to 600 pounds. Females are generally smaller than males. Dolphins can eat up to 15 lbs. of food a day, 20 if the water is cool. They particularly enjoy shiny, silver fish but will also eat squid, shrimp and other types of fish. Off the coast of Georgia, dolphins can be seen behind shrimp boats hoping for an easy meal.

Flora and Fauna The Tennessee Botanical Gardens states the Camellia was first cultivated in 2737 B.C., making it one of the oldest plants known to man. The plant is native to eastern Asia, but first made its introduction to the United States after the Revolutionary War, according to The Camellia- A Condensed History by Elizabeth Cooper. Their influence was first felt in the South, when in 1818 David Landreth opened a branch of his seed company in Charleston, S.C. Between 1830-1860, thousands of plants arrived throughout the South for plantation owners of the low country. The first Camellia nursery in Georgia was located in Augusta. The Fruitland Nursery was established in 1858 on property that is now known as the Augusta National Golf Club. It was after this time that Camellias were introduced to Liberty County. The distinct flowers can be spotted throughout the county on numerous home sites. The flowers are well suited to the warm climate found in our area. Winters are not harsh, which proves to be beneficial to the survival and blooming of the Camellias. Camellias are not the only easily recognizable flowers within the county. Few plants are as widely recognized in the South, as the Indica azalea which originates from Japan. This shrub can grow 8 to 12 feet tall and wide, where it will smother itself in colorful blossoms each spring. The most commonly seen blooms are red, white, pink, purple or salmon. Designated as the Georgia state wild flower in 1979, these magnificent plants bloom from March to August. Georgia is home to thirteen species of azalea, which can be found throughout the warmer months of the year. LCM

they instead found a better alternative. “We can’t teach chicks to open oysters in the way they are meant to, because frankly we don’t know how they do it,” said Hayes. “We take the eggs out of the nest and replace them with wooden eggs that the parents then sit on.” “Once the eggs start to hatch, we put them back in the nest. This way the eggs are safe but the birds don’t imprint on people,” he said. This method has increased the survival rate from 0 to 40% in recent years. Two birds on the island imprinted on humans before they could be returned to the wild. One on Hayes, who said “he sits with me every afternoon on the dock while I fish. Even though I like it, its not good for him.” The other imprinted on a large piece of machinery, which it follows all over the island (true story, no lie!). St. Catherine’s has a long and varied history with a rich and sometime climactic story. While most of the island is not open to the public, visitors can enjoy one of its pristine beaches as long as they have the means to get there as the only way to reach this secluded destination is by boat. As Liberty County’s barrier island, locals and visitors alike are cautioned to take good care of the beautiful place and preserve it for future generations as those who came before sought to do with careful stewardship and planning. The academy operated until 1940 and then became a cooperative to help area residents with farming, economic and household issues. Its most recent historical role was as a sit6e for civil rights movements. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. planned his campaign to integrate Birmingham during meetings there in the mid-1960s. The Dorchester Improvement Association is spearheading the effort to restore Dorchester Academy to its past glory and conducts annual fundraisers, the biggest of which is the annual Walk to Dorchester, usually held in mid-June. The walk retraces the average distance students had to walk to attend the school.

It features 7,400 square feet, including an auditorium, five classrooms, a full kitchen and an outdoor pavilion. The schoolhouse, originally built in 1927, consolidated the schools at Sunbury, Colonels Island, Riceboro and Jackson Chapel. That building burned and the school was rebuilt in 1938. It served grades one through seven until 1951, when it was closed. On Feb. 4, 1958, the Liberty County Board of Education sold the property for $10 to the nonprofit Dorchester Civic Center, Inc. Over the years the building fell into a state of disrepair and was closed due to the hazardous conditions. In 2008, Dorchester Civic Center, Inc. reactivated and began an effort to restore the historic building so it could again become a vital part of the community. The renovation was completed in 2010.

While none of the plantation’s buildings remain, the site in Bulltown Swamp is a natural wonder with interpretive signs marking trails and the restored formal garden. In July 2010, portions of LeConte were closed due to a lack of funds, and the site’s hours of operation now are by appointment only. Those who set up tours still can meander down the nature trail along the ridge of one of the many dams built by slave labor in the 1770’s. The dams were used for rice cultivation and many of the trunks, necessary to control the movement of water, have been rebuilt and replaced.

With the Spaniards came African slaves, making this the entry port for some of the first slaves in America. The English occupied the area in the 1730s, creating several plantations including Melon Bluff. Remnants of this culture are still present in Melon Bluff’s abandoned rice fields and old ferry road. Along with a forest of native plants, Melon bluff is home to 309 species of birds, including wild turkeys, owls, woodpeckers, marsh birds, pelicans, painted buntings, hummingbirds, osprey and cardinals. Patterned after a raised, cottage-style house typical in the 18th century, the museum is a replica but holds authentic pieces and a wealth of information. The museum was built in 1957 and has been gathering artifacts, documents, pictures and furnishing since then. Several special days are held at the museum each year, including the annual Christmas tea. In late 2009, a new collection opened featuring documents and household items from the Charles Colcock Jones family, whose letters became the basis for “The Children of Pride,” a compilation about life on Southern plantations in the mid-1800s. Next door to the museum is the Midway Congregational Church, built in 1792. The church is a classic example of a colonial house of worship with neither electricity nor plumbing. The nearby cemetery was established in the 1700s by Puritan settlers. Many famous Liberty Countians are buried there. About 300 of the 1,200 graves still bear their original markers, while others crumbled or were destroyed by Northern troops who used the cemetery as a cattle pen during the Civil War.

Heart of the Community

82 Liberty County magazine

Page 81: Liberty County Magazine- 2012/2013

A “Art is the desire of a man to express himself, to record the reactions of his personality to the world he lives in,” said Amy Lowell, a winner of the Pulitzer Prize of Poetry. Art is subjective- not everyone will see or feel the same thing, even though they are physically experiencing one article. Despite the differences in our perceptions, art is good for all. According to Joshua Guetzkow, of the University of Princeton, art is good for both the individual and the community. Whether increasing opportunities for enjoyment or helping to build a community identity, art is proven to be beneficial to society as a whole. As Liberty County has grown, the need for diversity and an increased quality of life provided by arts and cultural activities has also increased. The Hinesville Area Arts Council (HAAC) was formed in response to those desires in 1989. “We think that the arts are not an ‘extra’ part of life, rather they are in everything that we do whether it’s realized or not. The arts are a huge way that our culture and history is displayed, without those outlets how else would we know about the past,” said HAAC Chair, Leah Poole. The success of the downtown gallery and exhibit space has been overwhelming. For every month in 2012, a local artist has been exhibited for a month-long show. A variety of mediums have been displayed, including photography, oil, acrylics, ceramics, etc. The HAAC is responsible for the development and implementation of not only the restoration of a downtown building, but also numerous art classes that benefit all members of the community. “Arts and culture are at the heart of communities. They make them more attractive places to live, contribute to the ongoing knowledge about our community and bring the community to life, as well as attract tourists, contribute to the overall economic well-being and showcase our unique attributes,” continued Poole.

Drawing, drama, calligraphy, culinary, yoga and more have been offered and well received by community members. An adults painting party features step-by-step instructions with the benefit of the painters choice of providing their own refreshments. The art classes that have been offered thus far hit all age ranges from 3 years old to older adults, with classes offered on a rotating basis for all ages. “I’ve been amazed at the turnout for the adult art classes,” said Ashley Cuevas, art instructor and HAAC member. “I expected the kids classes to have a good turnout, but the adult classes have been a surprise,” she said. When news of yoga classes hit area streets instructor Liza Xilot said, “I received many calls and messages with both questions and excitement. People wanted to know the benefits [of yoga], schedule, cost and the difference between Yoga and Pilates. There were also a lot of people welcoming us to downtown Hinesville.” Xilot enjoys her involvement with the HAAC. “I like all of it- The location, the space, the people, the classes, and especially the people that put their heart into making it happen,” she said. Recurring events that the HAAC hosts include: Blues & BBQ, Bi-Monthly Free Family Movie Nights, Quarterly Book Signings and community theatre. A new event, added just last year was the Cupcake War. “The HAAC started the Cupcake Wars in December of 2011. After the popularity of that first event we decided to do it twice per year, once in the Spring and once in the Fall,” said Jennifer Buehler, Vice Chair. Buehler said

that the Cupcake War brings together not only those with a talent for baking, but also businesses and other novices who have an interest in working together to create a fabulous display. The public gets the chance to vote for a people’s choice and then judges also rank each display. As the HAAC has proven, Liberty County wants cultural events. In response to this, the Hinesville Downtown Development Authority is completing a project to serve the entire community. Bryant Commons is a community green space in the heart of Hinesville that will feature two large ponds, walking trail and an amphitheater, which will seat roughly 1,500 individuals. The home of the late Senator Glen E. and Trudie Bryant sits at the entranceof the property and currently houses the Independent Telecommunication Pioneer Association (ITPA) museum and national office. The ITPA Museum displays and stores hundreds of artifacts that outline the history of the telephone industry. The museum relocated from Washington D.C. in 2001. Phases of construction for the venue began by “clearing the site followed by the excavation of the 15 AC pond. Included in the pond construction was the placement of the aerating fountains as well as the bridge on the south end of the project,” said Marcus Sack, Project Engineer at P.C. Simonton. “The large detention pond is able to collect, detain and treat storm water runoff from a large portion of the downtown area. In doing this, the City

was able to intertwine public interest with good public stewardship. The effects of this will be felt countywide from cleaner water to better downstream flood control,” said Sack. Currently, the amphitheater is being constructed. It “will be large enough to hold 1500 people initially, when including the back lawn areas. It has a 35’ high stage house with a 40x60 foot stage capable of expansion,” said Sack. Future additions include a “back of house” complete with dressing rooms and fixed seating with a cover. Following the allocation of the necessary funding, the park will include “an open air pavilion, over 1 mile of walking trails, grassed parking, a rose garden, a main entrance road with a circular drive and landscaping,” said Sack. All of which are included in the master plan. The Hinesville Downtown

Development Authority (HDDA) has a long-term lease agreement with the Bryant Foundation and is responsible for ensuring a minimum of six annual cultural events held at the location. “Bryant Commons will provide a wonderful setting for a variety of eventsfrom smaller community activities, such as daytime school concerts, theatregroups, and local artists to festivals and concerts featuring national talent,” said Vicki Davis, Executive Director of the Hinesville Downtown Development Authority. Although there is talk of moving current special events that have outgrown the downtown area, Davis wants to increase the number of cultural events offered in the community, rather than just change the location ofestablished events. “Liberty County and the surrounding communities are blessed with a

tremendous amount of local talent in a variety of performing arts fromelementary to professional levels. We hope to provide opportunities thatwill nurture and promote these talents, and help them succeed wherever theirtalents may take them,” Davis said. Sack also sang praises for Bryant Commons, saying “the development will offer close to 50 acres of recreational usage. Plus, a venue like nothing else in the county. I expect that the full benefit to the community is not

even close to being realized.” The museum is open to the public and available for tours by appointment. The house also serves as a meeting/event venue and is available for rental. More information is available by contacting the HDDA. LCM

After the popularity of that first event we decided to do it twice per year, once in the Spring and once in the Fall,” said Jennifer Buehler, Vice Chair. Buehler said that the Cupcake War brings together not only those with a talent for baking, but also businesses and other novices who have an interest in working together to create a fabulous display. The public gets the chance to vote for a people’s choice and then judges also rank each display.

RIGHT Master Plan for Bryant Commons which is a community green space in the heart of Hinesville that will feature two large ponds, walking trail and an amphitheater, which will seat roughly 1,500 individuals.
