Location: The Summer School will happen at “SeaCities” which is a new research design lab of the largest Cities Research Institute in Australia. It is located at Griffith University’s Gold Coast Campus near-by the Pacific’s Coral Sea. Prestigious beaches allow various activi-ties like surfing, and indigenous subtropical forests invite to excursions in the hinterlands. Public transport connects the campus with Surfers Paradise and two International airports (Brisbane, Gold Coast / Coolangatta).

Fees: A fee of 300 Australian Dollars (ca. US$ 200) will be required after the confirmation of accep-tance. It will be used as contribution of expenses. Fees will neither include flights nor accommoda-tion nor food.

Visas: After payment of fees, SeaCities / Cities Research Institute can provide a letter confirming your participation in the workshop for visa purposes. All participants traveling from abroad are re-sponsible for securing any visa required. It is suggested that you contact the Immigration officer at your nearest Australian Consulate who will assist you with your application for an appropriate visa and / or check the Australian visa web-page asap.

Insurance: All participants are responsible for their own travel, health and personal insurance. Grif-fith University takes no responsibility for lost / stolen property.As a visitor to Australia you are not eligible to join the Australian Government funded Medicare Scheme nor are you covered under local Workers Compensation legislation. You will be required to ensure that you have adequate personal medical and hospital health insurance prior to arriving in Australia and for the entire duration of your time in Australia.

Certificate of Participation: All participants will receive a certificate of participation (and on request an evaluation with the rating good, very good or excellent) recognise the Summer School as profes-sional development course or course of study.

Candidates: The Summer School is offering Master students and young Graduates (up to 5 years after Graduation) in fields of Architecture or Urbanism (like Urban planning) to gain experience in “Aquatectural” design.

Timeline: The Summer School will happen at the end of the Australian Summer with pleasant temperatures. During the two weeks between 16. February and 02. March 2020 all day workshops, presentations, local excursions and more will happen. The final outcome of the Summer School will include models and plans and will be exhibited.

More Libertarian Micro-Nations have been initiated after Libertalia’s creation: Some have been ignored, some not accepted by UN and some had a limited life-span due to ter-ritorial claims of other nations. The Republic of Minerva for example was invaded by troops from Tonga and the Republic of Rode Island was dynamited by the Italian navy. This is the reason why we suggest a location on a territory without any national claims.

Almost 50% of the earth’s surface is free to all and belonging to none. These territories are called “high seas” and are situated a minimum of 200 sea-miles away from national coastal borders. We suggest - instead of piracy - an economy which is based on maritime trade, real estate, energy farm-ing and aquaculture, casino and cruise-ship tourism. Therefore, we were combining location factors like important ocean lanes and best climatic conditions without hurricane occurrence which results in a specific location in the Pacific Ocean.

The - admittedly not modest - goal is to develop a floating structure which will be the largest in the world. The number of attracted citizens will provide a serious counterbalance to other existing Pa-cific nations. This will create territorial security and diversity of cultures, social and interest groups, and amenities for long-term residents.

A main aspect of the Summer School’s design experiments are the following questions:* How can the community of Libertalia Pacifica feel home? * How can we develop innovative design which is neither following industrial off-shore

design (e.g. of a container oil rig) nor a shift of normal buildings onto floating platforms? * Or more generally: How can human beings as land-based creatures create an environ-

ment on the high-seas which highlights the human desire for identity and belonging?

Libertalia Pacifica: A floating city for a new Micro-Nation

It may surprise that pirates (or privateers) have been described

as the first independent democratic societies. 300 years ago

the author Charles Johnson reported on a settlement of pirates

called “Libertalia”, a name derived from the Latin term “li-

beri” meaning “free”. The idea was to create a nation in which

people of all colours, creeds, and beliefs were to be free of any

obstacles. Libertalia was located on the island country of Mad-

agascar, today a Republic which would protect nowadays its

territory against endeavors to create a free democratic society.

Dear Master students and Young Graduates, we invite you to rethink the fundamental ideas of architectural design in order to create proposals that blend into the ocean scenery and adapt to both the aquatic environment and human needs. These innovative design strategies will be based on the idea of living on the sea which turns Architecture into Aquatecture.

This exploration of unknown territories requires intense research which will lead to innovative de-signs. The SeaCities research lab is a first of its kind and its focus on research creates an exciting environment to learn. Being a part of our team also creates additional benefits including:
