Quick Job Tip: For a successful interview
Treat everyone you meet at your potential employer’s office with respect—from the guy who almost cuts you off in the parking lot to the administrative assistant who asks you to wait 20 minutes. Hiring managers often ask other employers (especially those who work on the “front lines”) about potential candidates’ behavior.
Department of the Month:
Anthropology
Each month, we sit down with a representative from one
of the liberal arts academic departments to learn about
what makes liberal arts majors great job candidates.
A Note from Your Career Advisor: Job Searching? Start with Career
Services.
It’s time to get back to school. After
getting your textbooks and every-
thing else need, you might be won-
dering where to find a job. Career
Services has some tools to help
make your job search a success.
First, decide what type of job you
want. Ask yourself: What are my
interests? Can I work part-time or
full-time? Will I work on-campus or
off? Is there a particular depart-
ment in which I’d like to work?
Then, get ready to start your
search with Jobs4Cats. Jobs4Cats
has postings for on-and off-campus
part-time jobs, full-time positions,
internships and more. Create your
account here to get started.
Career Services also hosts job fairs
throughout the semester so that
you can network with employers.
To see the job fairs coming up this
fall, click on the Events tab on our
website.
Finally, Career Services helps you
interview with employers right here
on campus. On-Campus Interview-
ing, or OCI, takes place all semes-
ter long. Check out upcoming op-
portunities in Jobs4Cats.

This month, we caught up
with Anthropology
Internship Coordinator Neill
Hadder to ask a few ques-
tions about the career
perks of an anthropology
degree. What is it about a major in anthropology that help students succeed in the job market? Anthropology majors go outside of the box and pursue something intellectually challenging and interesting. Anthropology challenges students to think critically and creatively about the whole of actual human life— past and present, cultural and biological. This is an exceptional and uniquely broad training ground for critical thinking, and our classes allow students to refine these skills through writing and oral presentation.
Do you have any tips for a job seeker trying to “sell” his/her liberal arts degree to employ-ers?
Don’t focus on the lack of specialized knowledge. Employers are looking for people who can read, write, speak, think and be someone who someone who has an idea that no one else in the room has.
What are some popular career choices for Anthropol-ogy majors? Many students work with nonprofit organizations dealing with issues such as homelessness and refugee resettlement. Others are hired by local cultural resource management companies or state archaeological labs. Former undergrads also work in technical jobs such as a coordinator for a genetics lab and as a technician at the Eye Bank. Nationwide, anthropology undergrads often find careers with state and federal govern-ment, nonprofit organizations, or in management positions in the business sector, as well as pursuing academic ca-reers.
What factors should a student consider when deciding whether to attend graduate school? If the student has a
specific goal in mind—knowing where they want to do research and what they’d like to learn more about or what type of career requires a graduate degree—s/he will probably be successful. If the student doesn't have a purpose then graduate school is probably not the right decision. For more information about the anthropology depart-ment, visit www.txstate.edu/anthropology.
