The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with a 836 pound pumpkin. Please join us on October 31, 2019 at 2:00pm in the dining room for the resident Halloween costume party. Come dressed up in your best costume. Prizes will be given out for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Although it’s derived from ancient festivals and religious rituals, Halloween is still widely celebrated today in a number of countries such as Ireland, Canada and the United States. Traditions include costume parties, trick or treating, pranks and games. Versions of the holiday are celebrated elsewhere, too, In Mexico and other Latin American countries, Dia de Los Muertos –the day of the Dead honors deceased loved ones and ancestors. In England, Guy Fawkes Day, which falls on November 5, is commemorated with bonfires and fireworks. Fun Facts about Halloween: The first Jack-o Lanterns were actually turnips. If you are planning on being in the facility for the Thanksgiving noon meal, an invitation is extended to you to have two guests join you. Due to limited seating, guest reservations will be taken on a first come first serve basis until the list is filled.

Flu Shots Front Range Flu Shots will be providing flu shots to our residents and staff on Friday, October 18, 2019 from 9:00 to 10:30 am on the 2nd floor Library. Insurance card must be presented at time of service. Co–payments may apply. We accept: Medicare Part B and Railroad Medicare Part B (when primary insurance plan) Medicare Advantage PPO Aetna CIGNA Humana Rocky Mountain Health Plans. United Healthcare 1 Medicare Solutions Assisted Living Plan (PPO SNP) The cost of a high dose flu shot for people 65 years and older is $79.00 when not covered by insurance. If interested please sign up at the Receptionist Desk and provide your current insurance card. Holiday Craft Fair Libby Bortz Assisted Living will be hosting a Craft Fair on Saturday, November 9th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Lobby. Come support our resident and staff crafters.

Veteran’s Wall Residents, are you a Veteran or do you have an Active Duty family member? Submit a picture of yourself or your loved one in uniform to be added to our Veteran’s Wall located outside the Activity Room on the second floor. Submit picture with full name, rank and service dates to David in Activities Office no later than Friday, October 18th. We will be honoring our Veterans on Monday, November 11th with a flag raising ceremony and a special program at 10 am with the Kennedy High School ROTC. Thanksgiving Hair Appointments Be sure to make your hair appointments by November 8th. Thanksgiving Plans If your plans will be taking you out of the community for the holiday, please notify the front desk at least 48 hours in advance. This will allow time for the staff to make sure medications are ready to go with the resident.

October Employee of the Month Debbie Deese I am pleased to announce that Debbie Deese has been selected as the October 2019 Employee of the month. Debbie began her employment at Libby Bortz Assisted Living Center on 7/22/19 and works in the Environmental Services Department, first as a housekeeper and now as our Laundry Aide. Debbie is recognized by her friendly outgoing personality and willingness to help out in any way that she is able. Debbie was born in Denver and raised in Salida, Colorado. Debbie states that she and her stepbrother were adopted as infants and spent their childhood in Salida, only moving back to the Denver area when her mother passed away. Debbie was widowed eight years ago and has four grown children, two sons and two daughters. Only one son resides out of state. Debbie has eight grandchildren and when she has free time she enjoys spending time with her family. hiking, horseback riding, watching baseball and traveling. Currently Debbie is saving up for a dream trip to Ireland. Congratulations Debbie on being the October Employee of the month.

General Store Price Changes Because of the increase in prices at stores, Libby Bortz will be increasing the prices on certain items in the General Store. We are selling to our residents at our cost. The new prices will go into effect November 1, 2019. Here are the items that are being increased:

Assorted chips were 35 cents now 40 cents. Bags of Candy were $1.05 now $ 1.10. Small Candy bars were 15 cents now 25 cents. Boxes of Candy were $1.05 now $ 1.10. Sugar Free Stovers were $1.97 now $ 2.25 Sugar free Werther were $2.00 now $ 1.10. Depends were $ 12.90 now $ 20.00. Poise Pads were $11.84 now $ 12.50. Carefree Pads were $ 3.05 now $ 3.25. Ivory bar soap was 50 cents now 60 cents. Liquid soap was $1.05 now $ 1.10. Cheese puffs were $2.00 now $ 3.00. Chap stick was $1.05 now $ 1.10. Efferdent tablets were $1.10 now $ 6.00. Dental floss was $1.05 now $ 1.10. Fixodent was $4.40 now $ 4.75.

Giving Tree It’s hard to believe, but it’s that time of the year where we begin to plan for the holiday season. The Giving Tree is a program allowing family, friends, staff and volunteers to share in the holiday spirit by providing special gifts for all residents, The gifts will be delivered during the Resident Holiday Party on December 20th. The Giving Tree will be placed on the wall near the receptionist desk on November 1st, If you would like to participate in this holiday program. Select a name off the tree and give it to the receptionist who will share the resident’s “ wish list” with you. Please wrap your selected gift placing the resident’s name on a tag and returning it to the facility by Friday. December 13th.

Stairwells Residents are not to use the stairwells. Stairwells are to be used only in an emergency situation and when instructed by staff only.
