    From the Rector

    The role o the Iceland Academy or the Arts is to pro-vide art education at the higher-education level and todisseminate knowledge and proessionalism in the artsto the community at large. It oers education in mostartistic elds and nurtures artistic creativity and research.The Academy also acts as a orum or discussion aboutthe arts and an artistic workshop that is open to anyone.Theatre, concerts, ashion, design, ne art, cinema andperormance art all these and more are to be oundwithin the walls o the Academy. It houses art in its mostdiverse orms, and artists that are as diverse as they aremany.

    The curriculum emphasises creative thinking in cultureand the arts. It seeks to stimulate all types o creativityand progress in all elds, led by three guiding princi-ples: curiosity, understanding and courage. Curiosityprompts us to ask and seek out new paths; we seek

    to understand that which is oreign; and we cultivatecourage to ollow through on our convictions andartistic vision.

    The Academy is a haven where students are givenpeace to develop their talents. It is a place wheremistakes are not costly, and where each and everyindividual is given support and counselling rom topproessionals, to enable them to nurture their talentsand uncover their artistic spirits.

    The ultimate goal is or students to be able to stand ontheir own two eet in relation to their art, whether theymove on to work or continued studies. They should havea broad knowledge o art and should be open minded,while at the same time applying critical judgement totheir work and that o others. Primarily, though, theyshould have developed their natural talent or creativityand personal expression.

    The ollowing pages are intended to highlight the diversework that takes place at the Iceland Academy or the

    Arts. It should be kept in mind, however, that it is thestudents themselves who through their work dene whatsort o school the Academy is and what takes placethere. It is through their radiant creativity that the Aca-demy receives its light.

    University Instruction / The Academy oers ull-time education at university level, emphasizing superiorinstruction and training or students who have passed thestrictest admission requirements. Four department acul-ties oer degree programmes at the Bachelor o Artslevel, through dierent branches o study. The MusicDepartment also oers a Master programmme in compo-siton. The Academy is currently preparing programmesat the Master o Arts level in all aculties and to initiatenew branches o study.Art Education / The objective o the Academys ArtEducation programme is to train artists to be teachersand to rene their ability to communicate their know-ledge and skills. In that way, the Academy seeks toacilitate the expansion o artistic creativity and pro-essionalism in the arts.Art Creation & Research / Teachers at the IcelandAcademy o the Arts are artists or academics. The Aca-demy organizes exhibitions and a variety o artistic

    events, which are open to the public, and cooperateson various projects in the area o art and culture withinstitutions, organisations and individuals around thecountry. The Academy also runs a Research ServiceCenter with the aim to support research amongs itsacademic sta and students. The Center provides anoverview o unding possiblities and oers consulting tosta and students. Its role is also to seek systematicallyor new research opportunities and to enhance researchcollaboration.The Academy seeks opportunities orresearch in arts and culture, establishes connectionsor cooperation in those elds, and educates artists

    and academics in the arts about the development othe research society.

    The Open Art Academy / The Open Art Academyis an independent institution within the Iceland Academyo the Arts. Its role is to educate and inorm the generalpublic about the arts and to give working artists theopportunity to expand their knowledge and renew theireducation.

    The Library / The Academys Library and InormationService specializes in materials relating to the artisticelds represented at the school. Its role is to provideaccess to diverse materials relating to culture and thearts, such as books, magazines, image material, scripts,records, CDs and musical scores.

    6The Department o Fine Arts oers a three-year pro-gramme leading to a B.A. degree. Its main ocus is onacilitating original thought processes and developingdierent methods or realising ideas. In the programme,students work on ideas, processing ideas, presentationand critque. Cooperation with working artists, organi-sations and companies is actively sought with regardto instruction and involvement in specialised projects.

    The role o the Department o Fine Arts is to be a leadingorce in ne arts instruction at the university level and anopen venue or research and debate. Students and in-structors are expected to take an active part in cultural lieand to maintain vibrant ties with the artistic community.

    The study programme places emphasis on the develop-ment o independent work habits, strengthening thestudents knowledge and appreciation o art and pre-paring them or their role and position as artists in society.

    The Department o Design and Architecture oersprogrammes leading to a B.A. degree through ourspecialisations: Architecture, Product Design, FashionDesign and Graphic Design. The duration o the studyis three years.

    The objective o the study is that students will be ableto carry out diverse assignments in a creative manner.They seek knowledge rom the dierent areas within thesector and learn various methods o solving problems.

    The Department of Music

    The Department o Music oers three-year programmestowards B.Mus. and B.A. degrees. Students choosebetween our programmes: instrumental/vocal peror-mance, music theory, music education, and composition with emphasis on contemporary composition, lmmusic, theatre or stage music, music production ornew media.

    The role o the music department is to train musicians or

    a broad range o music proessions. The objective is thatthey acquire independent work methods, enhance theirknowledge and develop as independent artists.

    The programme shall meet international standards andrefect the wide range o opportunities open to musiciansin the elds o musical perormance, innovation and edu-cation. Graduates o the Department o Music should bea source o enrichment or society.

    The Department of Theatre

    The Department o Theatre oers three study pro-grammes: acting, a our-year programme leading to aB.F.A. degree, in which the main emphasis is on trainingthe actor; Theory and Practice, a three year programmeleading to a B.A. degree, consisting o both theoreticaland practical work in which the ocus is on theatre inthe widest sense; and a three-year dance programmeleading to a B.A. degree.

    The aim o the study programmes in the department isto help students open their minds about their role in thearts, and strengthen their ability to develop new ideasand generally take an initiative in the advancement otheir eld o art.

    The composition o the study programmes varies, but theoverall emphasis is on providing students with a soundknowledge o the major aspects o the art o theater anddance, concentrated training in the subjects on whichtheir technique is based. Students work on their assign-ments either in groups or as individuals.

    The students in the acting training programme areoered extended training in technical subjects suchas voice, singing and movement. They must undertakenumerous projects in scene studies and improvisation,take a course in acting or the camera, devicingand attend theoretical courses o various kinds. In thenal year, the student take part in productions in thestudent theatre.

    In Theory and Practice, students obtain a good ound-ation or diverse proessions within the broad spectrum

    o the theatre with emphasis on contemporary theaterpractice. This programme also provides great pre-

    paration or urther specialisation on a higher edu-cational level in subjects such as directing, dramaturgyor playwriting. The programme consists o a combi-nation o theoretical studies and analysis on the onehand and practical training and stage productionon the other.

    The overall aim o the dance programme is to preparetalented, advanced dance students or the diverseworking environment o the dancer. Emphasis is placedon giving students urther training in dance techniqueand movement ability, which gives them enhancedinsight into methods o dance and develops them asartists. The goal o the dance programme is to preparetalented dance students who have completed secondaryeducation or the diverse proessional world o dance.

    Art Education

    Students admitted to the art education programme musthave completed a B.A. degree or equivalent in visualarts, design, drama or music. The duration o study isone to two years and leads to a diploma which allowsstudents to apply to the Ministry o Education or legalcertication to teach at the primary and secondaryschool levels.

    The Art Education programme is a pedagogical pro-gramme intended to train teachers in general instructionand or teaching in the arts in primary and secondaryschools, according to a set curriculum. Through the ArtEducation programme the Academy seeks to ensure thatinnovation in art and artistic theory is passed rom oneeducational level to another and that artists will gaingreater respect or education in the arts.

    The Academy aims to strengthen the role o the arts inthe education o all Icelanders while simultaneouslyacilitating an understanding o the value o creativethinking in all educational work.

    Iceland Academy of the Arts

    The Iceland Academy o the Arts is a sel-governinginstitution, ounded on September 21, 1998.

    Instruction began in the all o 1999.Number o students: 470Number o programmes: 15

    Permanent employees in autumn 2008: 80,including 45 permanent teachers.

    Number o part-time teachers: around 250 per semester.

    Each year, the Academy eatures a large number oexhibitions, concerts and theatre perormances. Thestudent theatre turns out three productions under thedirection o a proessional director, there are about tengraduation concerts every spring, and the educationin the Department o Fine Arts and the Department

    o Design and Architecture ends with participation ina graduation exhibition.

    The Iceland Academy o the Arts places emphasis onenhancing cooperation with other higher educationinstitutions in the country and various other institutionsand enterprises. Its partners include: The Universityo Iceland, Reykjavk University, the Agricultural Uni-versity o Iceland, Birst University, the Reykjavk ArtMuseum, the National Gallery o Iceland, the Living ArtMuseum, the sajrdur Music School, the SkatellCultural Centre, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra,

    the Icelandic Opera, the Salur Music Hall, Caput, theReykjavk City Theatre, the National Theatre, the Akur-eyri Theatre, the Iceland Dance Company, the ReykjavkArts Festival and the State Broadcasting Service.

    The Iceland Academy o the Arts is an active participantin international cooperation. The Academy has madebilateral agreements with about 70 higher educationinstitutions in Europe through the Erasmus programme.Within NordPlus, the Academy cooperates with about120 art academies in the Nordics and the Baltics. Pre-parations are being made or cooperation with art aca-demies in Asia, including China, Japan and Thailand.Students can thereore complete a part o their studies

    in oreign places. In general, the student exchange lastsone semester. A large number o oreign exchangestudents also studies at the Iceland Academy o the Arts,and numerous oreign guest teachers teach at the Aca-

    demy or longer or shorter periods o time.The Academys application deadline or exchangestudents is October 15 or the spring semester and April15 or the autumn semester.     Information for applicants

    Admission requirements or regular students: The Ice-land Academy o the Arts seeks talented and creativeindividuals with solid basic education and undamentalknowledge o the arts. To qualiy or admission, appli-cants must have completed a secondary school exam(Icelandic stdentspr) or a comparable educationalprogramme. Exceptions may be made or individualswho demonstrate unusual talent in the eld or whichthey are applying.

    Applicants are evaluated by special admissions boardsand/or take an admissions exam.

    Admission or the art education programme requires a

    bachelor degree or a comparable 180 ECTS universitylevel education in the art eld in question.

    The application deadlines vary rom one departmentto the other but most o them are in March April.

    The basic application orm or regular students at theIceland Academy o the Arts is in a standardised elec-tronic ormat on the Academys website. The electronicapplication orm must also be printed out and handedin beore the advertised application deadline togetherwith a portolio with samples o the applicants work.

    Note that most classes are taught in Icelandic and thatull-time students at the Iceland Academy o the Arts areexpected to know Icelandic.
