   Meet Your

Hello from sunny Austin! It has been a busy and wonderful summer for me! I am honored to begin my time as only the 12th Director of the Longhorn Band, and excited to see each of you when you arrive. The history of the Longhorn Band is one of determination, imagination, aspiration, and excellence. Each of us has the opportunity during our time on the Forty Acres to make a positive contribution to this legacy, and I can think of no greater experience than to be a part of the great work that each of you will do. Each of you have worked hard to become (and remain) a student at this great institution, and because of those experiences, you know exactly what to do to succeed in your desire to be a part of the Longhorn Band. Practice your instrument/flag/baton carefully and intelligently, master the marching fundamentals, memorize Texas Fight, and do all of it with confidence! In addition to our traditional shows (Pregame, Wall-to-Wall Band/Shotgun Texas, Script Texas), we will perform The Final Frontier (Star Trek: Into Darkness and Star Wars), LHBack to the Future (in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the film), and the Best of Austin (music of Austin artists). There are a few other things that will be revealed along the way, so stay tuned! With just a few short weeks to go before the beginning of the 115th Edition of the Showband of the Southwest, we can feel the anticipation building! Do everything you can to put yourself in the best position to succeed. All of us want to see each of you achieve your dreams! It is going to be a great year for the Longhorn Band. Hook ‘Em Horns! Dr. Hanna

Greetings, Longhorn Band prospective and returning members. I’m thrilled to welcome you, along with my colleagues, to the 2015-2016 edition of the "The Showband of the Southwest!" For those of you who are returning, you have a great sense of what's in store as another year of LHB is about to begin. You'll remember the sights and sounds right away while having the special responsibility of enculturating the new members of our LHB family. You are the bridge between the past and the new generation of students who are about to step foot on this amazing campus for the first time. Your position in this organization is unique and integral to the continued successes of this program. I can't wait to see the personality, quality, and professionalism that each of you bring to the LHB this year. For those of you who are prospective members, you have the opportunity to join a legacy as a member of one the highest quality performing ensembles to ever step foot in a concert hall, football field, or performance arena of any type. This lineage of quality is one of the many traditions here at UT and we are thrilled to see you continue to add to it. During this time, your preparedness should only be overshadowed by your desire to learn and participate at the highest level. You will learn not only from your faculty and staff, but also from your leadership and your new colleagues as well. Remember, everyone you meet was once new and had the same questions you will have. Embrace every opportunity you have with a great attitude and deliberate preparation and significant results will be never-ending.

Hello Prospective and Returning Members! I hope you are having a relaxing and enjoyable summer, and like me, are counting down the days to the start of Texas Football and the 2015 Longhorn Band! By trying out for LHB, you are auditioning for the opportunity to be part of one of the greatest organizations on the campus of UT Austin, and one of the most iconic college marching bands in the country. There’s no question that being in the Longhorn Band is a very special and unique opportunity, and we’re excited to see you in August.

 Directors

Just like it will be for many of you, this year will be a new experience for me as well, as this year will be my first as Associate Director of the Longhorn Band. For three years (2011-2014), I served as one of the many teaching assistants for LHB. I then moved to Florida last summer, and have been serving as the Director of the Marching Knights at the University of Central Florida for the past year. When I was given the opportunity to come back to UT and rejoin the Longhorn Band family, I couldn’t possibly refuse. I am thrilled to be coming back “home” to be with all of you next year! When you arrive in August, the first few days of band week will seem like a blur. But remember this: we will work hard, because we have an obligation to always perform with our best foot forward. And even though the work is hard, you will be surrounded by some of the greatest people on the Forty Acres who want nothing more than to help you succeed. We’re going to have a great time, and I look forward to seeing you soon. Until then, rest up, enjoy your summer, and we’ll see you in Austin in just a few short weeks! Hook ‘Em! Dr. Kelly

While you prepare to embark on either your first or fifth year as a member of this prestigious organization, I encourage you to explore all facets of The University of Texas Bands. Whether it's auditioning for one of the many concert ensembles or our basketball and volleyball pep bands, there are new and exciting opportunities each year for everyone to be a part of. As a new member of the faculty here at UT, I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with, learn from, and learn with you all. I am honored to join my colleagues in welcoming you to the LHB and look forward to meeting you soon. Hook 'em Horns! Mr. Gall

Greetings!

It is a pleasure to welcome each and every one of you, returning members and aspiring new members alike, to The University of Texas Bands. The University of Texas at Austin is the capstone of our state’s higher education system, and likewise, the Longhorn Band is the premier group of it’s kind in the nation. This is going to be a special year for all of our UT Bands, and the Longhorn Band in particular. It won’t be long until the drum cadence begins to speed up, the roll-off hits and the strains of Texas Fight! will again be reverberating from the walls of Darrell K Royal -Texas Memorial Stadium.

New members will quickly learn that among the things that you need to be concerned about are your academic studies, time management and your personal integrity. You will learn that the Longhorn Band really is a large family, and as such, you will meet many wonderful people who are here to help you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help should you need it! Your college years are going to be filled with many wonderful opportunities and choices. Though you have heard it before (and perhaps didn’t believe it) your college years really will be the best years of your life. Pack everything that you can into the moment!

On every college campus, there are only a handful of traditions that are truly enduring. The Longhorn Band is one of those truly special traditions. From performing before over 100,000 plus fans each weekend in DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, to providing the official ceremonial music for The University, to serving as The University's musical ambassadors throughout the nation, the Longhorn Band is a highly valued representative of this great university. The friendships that you make here are what make life worth living. You will have the time of your life! I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes:

For me, a memory of a Texas childhood is synonymous with a memory of The University of Texas in the early 1920’s. For it was then that my father, an English Professor at The University, would take me up the long staircase to his office in Old Main and lift me up over the piles of books and papers to look out of the windows. I loved to watch the old people (he called them “students”) far below, walking past the grassy open spaces and big oak trees and bluebonnets to lots of wooden buildings. I thought, “This is the best place.”

Three quarters of a century later, grassy open spaces, bluebonnets, and wooden buildings and Old Main itself, have given way to the Tower and scores of handsome edifices, and the 3,000 or so “old people” have been succeeded by more than 45,000 students. After a lifetime love affair with this institution, as a student, father of students, and a member of the Board of Regents, I know that I was right when I looked out of the windows of my father’s office in Old Main. This is the best place.

~Thomas Law, BA ‘39, LLB, ‘42

I look forward to meeting all of you in August.

Hook ‘em Horns!

Jerry Junkin,

Director of Bands

Hello Longhorn Band Prospective and Returning Members!

I hope that you all are having exciting summers, and are even more excited to join us in the fall! We have a lot to look forward to with the changes that are happening within LHB and UT, and a great marching season ahead. The shows and events that we have lined up for the fall will make for an unforgettable year!

Our first three marching clinics in Arlington and Houston were fantastic! If you haven’t had a chance to make it out to any of our clinics so far, check out the information on our website for the remaining clinic in Austin. We have a great group of Section Leaders and returning members that want to see you join this organization! If you don’t have the opportunity to make it out to a clinic, don’t fret. We have plenty of videos online going over all of our fundamentals, and there will be plenty of time during band week to practice.

For those of you that I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, let me tell you a bit about myself. This year will be my 4th year as a Mechanical Engineering major, and my 16th year watching Spongebob. I was lucky enough to land an internship with Accenture for the summer, so I am currently working in Chicago as a consultant. As for my origins, I am from Houston, Texas, so naturally I am a die-hard Rockets fan only when they’re winning and in the news. I am a saxophone player at heart, but I couldn’t be more excited to lead the band on the field as the Drum Major. My job is to give you all the tools and help that you need to succeed as a member of the Longhorn Band, so please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or simply want to chat! (Facebook/Email: [email protected]) I hope that you enjoy reading about the rest of our leadership team, and I will see you soon!

Mason Hurtte

Big Flags Hello  everyone!  I’m  Justin  “Professor  Portal”  Kosley.  I’ll  be  a  senior  chemical  engineering  major  from  Sugar  Land,  Texas.  Since  this  January,  I  have  been  working  at  a  chemical  plant  in  Houston  using  my  teleportation  powers  to  get  where  I  need  to  be  to  avoid  any  and  all  physical  activity.  Instead  of  climbing  to  the  top  of  distillation  columns,  I  just  teleport  there.  I’m  excited  to  teleport  back  to  Austin  for  my  last  year  and  can’t  wait  to  meet  all  of  you  walking  humans.  Feel  free  to  contact  me  at  [email protected]  with  any  questions!

My  name  is  Danny  Bacic,  and  I  am  a  Big  Flag  section  leader.  I  am,  without  question,  the  hottest  section  leader,  and  this  is  mostly  due  to  my  laser  vision,  which  is  a  power  that  I  have  had  all  my  life.  This  capability  doesn’t  really  help  me  much  this  summer  since  I’m  working  as  a  camp  counselor  and  SAT  tutor.  It  does  cause  some  interesting  situations,  however,  especially  for  things  like  movies,  art  exhibits,  and  staring  contests.  If  you  look  into  my  eyes,  they  will  burn  into  your  soul.  Try  it  sometime  this  year.  Before  you  meet  me,  you  can  contact  me  at  [email protected]  or  (972)  740-‐1727  anytime,  from  anywhere.  Hook  ‘em!

Hi,  I'm  Kate  (MindMeddler)  Knapp  and  I'm  one  of  the  Big  Flag  Section  Leaders  for  this  season!  I'm  an  English  Major  with  a  French  Minor  which  means  I  can  control  the  minds  of  anyone  who  speaks  either  of  those  languages!  I  am  currently  heading  into  my  3rd  year  at  the  University  and  with  LHB  and  I've  been  a  Big  Flag  for  all  3  of  those  years!  I  worked  at  Build-‐A-‐Bear  Workshop  this  summer  and  being  able  to  control  the  minds  of  those  cranky  kids  made  the  job  so  much  easier!  My  goal  in  life  is  to  be  an  Editor  at  a  top  Publishing  Firm  or  to  just  use  my  mind  control  powers  to  save  the  world,  whichever  pays  better  after  college!  I  can't  wait  for  this  season  of  LHB  to  begin  and  for  me  to  reunite  with  the  JKED  League  to  fight  crime  (and  untimely  flag  maneuvers)!

Hello  everyone,  my  name  is  Emily  (AKA:  time  twister)  Plaza.  I  will  begin  my  fourth  year  at  UT  in  the  fall  as  a  human  biology  pre-‐med  major.  This  summer  I  honed  my  time  bending  super  powers  in  Houston,  TX.  I  used  my  powers  to  get  a  job,  volunteer  at  two  local  hospitals,  study  for  my  medical  school  admission  test,  apply  to  medical  school  and  spend  time  working  out.  In  any  spare  time  I  get  I  enjoy  painting,  watching  TV,  or  cooking  for  my  family.  My  powers  have  definitely  helped  in  making  time  for  all  my  activities  but  I  can't  wait  to  finish  up  my  last  year  in  Austin.  Feel  free  to  contact  me  with  any  questions  at  [email protected]

Piccolos Hi,  I  am  Roxanna,  of  House  Martell,  Unbowed,  Unbroken,  Unbent.  Although  Dorne  is  my  home,  I  was  born  in  San  Antonio,  Texas.  This  summer,  I  worked  part  time  with  property  management  company,  where  I  kept  the  realm  of  Austin  properties  safe  from  the  backstabbing  Lannisters  and  flying  dragons.  I  also  spent  many  hours  under  the  sun  in  Cancùn  and  Galveston  beach,  while  simultaneously  plotting  my  revenge  against  House  Lannister,  because  baby,  we’ve  got  bad  blood.  (P.S.  I  love  Taylor  Swift).  Send  a  message  to  [email protected]  if  you  have  questions!  I  look  forward  to  meeting  all  of  you!

"I  am  Sarah,  of  House  Targaryen,  first  of  her  name,  the  unburnt  (okay,  maybe  a  little  sunburnt),  born  in  the  land  of  San  Antonio,  residing  currently  in  the  realm  of  Round  Rock,    Khaleesi  of  Netflix,    breaker  of  chains  and  mother  of  dragons  (aka,  my  Dachshund).  When  I’m  not  trying  to  take  what  is  rightfully  mine,  I  study  History  in  the  school  of  Liberal  Arts  to  become  a  high  school  teacher  after  graduation.  This  summer,  I've  conquered  many  TV  series  on  Netflix,  adventured  to  the  Texas  coast,  and  spent  multiple  hours  plotting  to  take  back  the  Iron  Throne.  Send  a  raven  to  [email protected]  if  you  have  any  questions.  I  look  forward  to  an  exciting  fall  semester!    Valar  Morghulis."

Winter  is  coming.  And  by  that  I  mean  in  six  months  we  may  see  the  temperature  in  Austin  dip  down  below  40  degrees.  Greetings,  my  name  is  Josie  of  House  Stark  and  I  have  been  spending  my  summer  in  the  northern  stronghold  of  Seattle,  Washington.  Most  people  think  I'm  here  for  an  "internship"  in  "mechanical  engineering",  but  really  I  am  plotting  my  upcoming  attempt  at  overtaking  the  iron  throne.  In  my  free  time  I  like  to  spend  hours  researching  pet-‐friendly  apartments  and  doggie  daycares  for  the  dire  wolf  that  I  hope  to  adopt  in  the  near  future.  That  is  all  for  now,  but  if  you  wish  to  contact  me  in  the  coming  weeks  I  can  be  reached  at  [email protected]

I  am  Shub,  of  House  Lannister,  Lord  of  Casterly  Rock.  I  reside  in  Austin,  Texas  but  am  currently  working  a  summer  internship  with  an  oil  company  named  Oxy.  When  I’m  not  using  my  outrageous  amount  of  wealth  to  get  what  I  want  (as  I  am  a  Lannister),  I  love  to  watch  TV,  hang  out  with  friends,  and  get  lots  of  sleep.  If  you  dare  pose  any  questions,  send  an  email  to  [email protected]  and  I’ll  try  my  best  to  help!  After  all,  a  Lannister  always  pays  his  debts.  I'm  excited  to  meet  you  all!

Greetings  everyone,  my  name  is  Mackenzie  of  House  Tyrell  and  I  have  been  spending  my  time  this  summer  in  the  Highgardens  (it  has  been  raining  quite  frequently)  of  Austin.  I  am  taking  classes  at  The  University  of  Texas  only  to  make  me  more  suitable  as  the  Queen  of  Westeros.  I  am  enjoying  my  time  here  helping  others  in  the  city  (shadowing  physician  assistants)  and  helping  my  family  keep  to  their  motto  of  “Growing  Strong”  (getting  prepared  for  football  season!).  In  my  free  time,  I  enjoy  binge  watching  Netflix  and  going  paddleboarding  on  the  lakes  of  Westeros.  If  you  would  like  to  contact  me  anytime  in  the  near  future,  you  can  reach  me  at  [email protected]

Greetings,  Masters.  I  am  Ben  Zein,  the  illegitimate  son  of  Ned  Stark  (I’m  originally  an  oboe  player)  and  Brother  in  the  Night’s  Watch  (aka  Kappa  Kappa  Psi,  the  National  Honorary  Band  Service  Fraternity).  Since  I  was  raised  with  the  Stark  children,  I  received  a  proper  education  (I  have  a  BA  in  Government).  However,  my  learning  will  continue  as  the  Oath  of  the  Night  Watch  is  binding  for  life  (I  will  be  starting  a  degree  in  Music  Education).  As  for  now,  I  am  patrolling  the  Wall  (running  around  Austin’s  Town  Lake),  learning  the  History  of  Westeros  (re-‐reading  Harry  Potter),  and  saving  the  North  from  the  White  Walkers  (working  Longhorn  Music  Camp).  Send  a  raven  to  [email protected]  if  you  are  attacked  by  Wildlings  (aka  Taps  Stride),  want  to  join  the  Watch  (aka  want  music  advice),  or  fear  that  the  evil  Joffrey  will  chop  off  your  Father’s  head  (SPOILER).  Remember,  Winter  (Band  Week)  is  Coming!

My name is Jonathan, and I’m one of the trumpet section leaders for the upcoming year. Although music isn’t my chosen career path, I try to push myself musically every day. Thus, if I was any sea creature, I’d probably be an angel fish. I’ve got a lot of colors to me, but at heart I’m a musician. I’m in LHB and the Symphony Band, I study at McCombs School of Business, and wakeboard every week through Texas Wake. I love living in the beautiful college playground that is Austin, Tx, but I’m a Dallas guy. If anyone has questions or concerns, I’d love to hear from you—[email protected]. See you in August!

Hey  Trumpets!  My  name  is  Matthew  Brady.  I  am  a  4th  year  Mechanical  Engineering  Major  from  Liberty,  Texas.  I  am  looking  to  apply  mechanics  to  robotics  or  prosthetics  after  I  graduate.  My  hobbies  include  Ultimate  Frisbee,  tennis,  yoyo,  and  video  games  (Super  Smash  Bros  and  Halo).  I  am  working  this  summer  with  National  Instruments  in  Austin,  designing  and  testing  the  hardware  they  put  electronics  in.  If  I  could  be  any  sea  animal,  I  would  be  a  sea  otter  that  holds  hands  with  friends  while  I  sleep  so  I  don’t  lose  them.  If  you  want  to  get  to  know  me  or  have  any  questions  about  anything  (I  really  mean  anything),  don’t  hesitate  to  email  me  at  [email protected].  See  you  in  the  fall!  Hook  ‘em!

Hey Band! My name is Jeff Bell, and I am so excited to be one of the trumpet section leaders next year! This will be my second year both at UT and in Longhorn Band. I’m still awaiting confirmation, but I hope to be studying Computer Science starting this fall. If I could be any sea creature I would probably be a narwhal because they’re pretty long and awkward, and I’m pretty tall (6’5”)… and awkward. Also, they’re just awesome because who doesn’t love the idea of a sea unicorn.

Hello first years! My name is Matthew Shea and I am privileged to be one of your four TUBA! section leaders for the 2015 football season. I will be a second year Aerospace Engineering student from the humble suburb of Carrollton, Texas (about as exciting as Point Place, Wisconsin). When I’m not hanging out in the basement with fellow TUBA! friends or coming up with crazy government conspiracies you can find me with the Aerospace student group, watching Netflix, or embarking on the great food quest that is Austin. If you have any questions about LHB or UT in general, feel free to call/text/email me. I can’t wait to see you all in August and I look forward to blaring our awesome TUBA! sound on the field!

Hey  Texas  Drums!  I’m  Alec  Eickbusch  and  I’ll  be  the  tenor  drums  a.k.a.  TQ6  section  leader  for  this  season.    I’m  from  Round  Rock,  Texas  and  I’m  a  third  year  Electrical  Engineering  and  Physics  major.  I  love  music,  drumming,  and  good  BBQ.  If  there  is  one  thing  that  I  hope  you  will  learn  as  part  of  this  drumline  it’s  that  TQ6  is  a  state  of  mind.  This  year  is  going  to  be  awesome;  we’ll  have  new  drums  and  I  know  the  line  is  going  to  be  clean.    I  can’  t  wait  to  get  the  season  started!ruiz

BOOM  SQUAD!  That’s  everything  you  need  to  know  about  me,  my  section,  and  quite  frankly,  all  of  LHB.  As  long  as  you  understand  that,  you  will  fit  right  into  LHB.  If  you  think  you’re  Boom  Squad  material,  I  hope  to  meet  you  at  the  drum  camps  or  during  hell  week.  Whenever  I’m  not  busy  bringing  the  BOOM,  I’m  doing  electrical  engineering  and  computer  science  stuff  or  playing  football  (the  one  with  your  feet,  we  do  it  differently  back  home  in  New  Mexico).  If  you’re  planning  on  auditioning  for  the  Squad  or  have  any  general  LHB/Texas  Drums  questions,  send  me  an  email  at  [email protected].  Also,  in  case  you  didn’t  get  it,  we  on  the  Boom  Squad  play  bass  drums  and  follow  us  on  twitter  @UTBoomSquad.

HEYO!  I'm  Maddy  Braat,  I'm  a  3rd  year  music  education  major,  and  I'll  be  your  Bertha  Crew  Section  Leader  this  year.  When  I'm  not  impressing  my  celebrity  friends  such  as  Beyonce,  Snoop,  and  half-‐naked  Matthew  McConaughey  with  my  unbelievable  Bertha-‐hitting  skills,  you  can  find  me  trying  to  play  the  bassoon  or  ordering  Teji's  to  my  house  at  2am  even  though  I  live  3  blocks  away.  For  those  unfamiliar  with  Big  Bertha,  here  at  UT  we're  lucky  to  have  the  biggest  bass  drum  in  the  land  (don't  believe  anything  Purdue  says).  She  weighs  in  at  a  humble  500  pounds,  measures  8  x  10  ft,  and  is  a  beloved  tradition  of  the  university.  Being  on  Bertha  Crew  is  more  than  just  dropping  the  jaws  of  today's  most  prominent  celebrities,  it's  representing  LHB  at  home  games  and  university  events,  and  also  taking  a  whole  lot  of  pictures  with  people.  If  you  like  working  diligently/definitely  not  napping  at  rehearsals  and  in-‐state  away  games,  have  mad  gains  bro,  and  like  yelling  at  football  players  within  earshot,  you  might  be  a  great  fit  here.  Please  contact  me  if  you're  interested,  have  questions,  or  need  relationship  advice  at  [email protected]

Allie  Kubis  is  the  name,  Cymbals  is  the  game!  I'm  a  fourth  year  Business  Honors  and  Supply  Chain  major  from  Panama  City,  FL!  I  love  spitting  out  random  facts  (see  below),  watching  SNL/any  movie  starring  a  SNL  cast  member,  and  losing  my  voice  every  week  screaming  at  the  football  games!  I'm  spending  my  summer  in  Dallas  working,  cheering  on  the  Rangers,  getting  pumped  the  return  of  football,  and  waiting  for  Nick  Jonas  to  wake  up  and  realize  he's  been  in  love  with  me  since  he  was  born.  I'm  super  pumped  for  this  season,  working  with  the  other  amazing  Texas  Drums  Section  Leaders,  and  meeting  and  helping  all  the  members  of  this  year's  band!  If  you  have  any  questions  and  have  somehow  read  this  far  down  my  bio,  feel  free  to  reach  out  (Fun  fact:  I'm  the  only  Allie  Kubis  on  Facebook)!  Anyways,  have  a  wonderful  rest  of  y'all  summers  and  I  will  see  you  guys  soon!  Hook  'em!!
