Group load factors for November compared with last year
Positive trend in sales and load factors continues
The Lufthansa Group maintained its positive development of traffic
figures in November, carrying a total of 6.9 per cent more passen-
gers than in the same month last year. Capacities were extended by
5.9 per cent, whereas sales grew by 6.5 per cent in total. The pas-
senger load factor improved accordingly to 75.8 per cent (+0.5 pp).
All traffic regions recorded sales increases, some of which were sub-stantial. The pricing environment remained positive in comparison
with last year's already higher figures.
The steps taken by Lufthansa Passenger Airlines to optimise unit
costs are still clearly visible in the traffic data. Despite a lower num-
ber of flights, capacity was expanded year on year by 6.8 per cent,
thanks to the ongoing fleet restructuring. The passenger load factor
rose by 0.4 percentage points to 75.7 per cent. In European traffic
both sales and load factor went up sharply. In all long-haul regions
sales also grew again. In the Asia/Pacific traffic region this led to a
slightly higher load factor, while the passenger load factors in the
Americas and Middle East/Africa traffic regions were down on the
year.
SWISS was able to achieve a sales increase of 9.6 per cent in No-
vember. As capacity was increased by 11.1 per cent, at the same
time the passenger load factor came to 79.3 per cent (-1.1 pp).
Austrian Airlines reported a slight increase in sales of 0.4 per cent
with a smaller number of flights and almost unchanged capacity (-
0.1%). The passenger load factor picked up as a result by 0.4 per-
centage points to 73.1 per cent.
The restructuring underway at bmi had a positive impact on the pas-
senger load factor (+2.0 pp). Although capacities were cut by 11.5
per cent, sales declined by less and were down by 8.9 per cent on
the figure for last year.
Lufthansa Cargo was again able to improve its load factor, evencompared with last year's already more stable business performance
(+0.5 pp). Sales rose, due particularly to strong traffic on Asian
routes, by a total of 13.9 per cent and were matched by an increase
of 13.1 per cent in capacity.
Lufthansa Supervisory Board re-arranges remits on Executive
Board Supervisory The Lufthansa Supervisory Board has
adopted a new division of responsibilities for the members of the
Executive Board. The aim is to ensure closer interaction between the
Group's strategic objectives and its airline group and service compa-
nies. In addition, Carsten Spohr, a future member of the Executive
Board and Chairman of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board, pre-
sented the new structure and members of the Lufthansa German
Airlines Board. From 1 April 2011 the Lufthansa German Airlines
Board will have three new members: Kay Kratky for Frankfurt and
Flight Operations, Thomas Klhr for Munich and Direct Services and
Jens Bischof for Sales and Revenue Management. The division of
Finance and Human Resources remains unchanged and is still led
by Dr. Roland Busch.
Supervisory Board of Austrian Airlines appoints Thierry Antinori
as Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO The Supervisory
Board of Austrian Airlines has appointed Thierry Antinori as Chair-
man of the Executive Board and CEO of the company with effect
from 1 April 2011. At present Antinori is a member of the Lufthansa
German Airlines Board with responsibility for Marketing and Sales. With this decision the Supervisory Board of Austrian Airlines has
expanded the company's Executive Board, which currently consists
of Peter Malanik and Andreas Bierwirth, to three members in the
future.
Standard & Poor's improves outlook for Lufthansa On 30 No-
vember the rating agency Standard & Poor's confirmed its credit
rating for Lufthansa at BBB- (long-term) and A-3 (short-term), lifting
the outlook from negative to stable. The change in the outlook is in
recognition of the Group's improved financial profile due to the strong
recovery in passenger and freight business, stable contributions from
other segments and efficient cost control. A sustained industrial up-
turn in combination with a further strengthening of Lufthansa's finan-
cial profile could lead to further improvement in the rating.
Fourth Lufthansa Airbus A380 in service The fourth Lufthansa
A380 entered into service on 18 November, adding another ten
weekly flights with the new flagship to the timetable and replacing
other wide-bodied aircraft from the Boeing 747 and Airbus A340
families. The new aircraft is named after the Japanese capital Tokyo.
In the current winter flight timetable the A380 planes are to fly daily to
Tokyo, three times a week on the FrankfurtPeking route (previously
once a week) and five times a week on the FrankfurtJohannesburg
route (previously twice a week).
Internet back on board Since the end of November Lufthansa has
been offering broadband internet access again on long-haul flights in
collaboration with Panasonic and Deutsche Telekom. Lufthansa is a
pioneer of in-flight broadband access and was the first airline to offerinternet on board back in 2004, until Connexion by Boeing, the part-
ner at the time, suspended the service in 2006. The service is now to
start on selected North Atlantic routes first of all, before being ex-
tended to almost the entire intercontinental route network by the end
of 2011. Passengers with WI-FI enabled laptops or smartphones
have unrestricted access to the internet. Business travellers also
have the opportunity of logging in to their company's virtual private
network (VPN).
The next Investor Info with the traffic data for December will be
published on 12 January 2011.
