The Word on the LLX (Septuagint)• Translating the OT into Greek had the

effect of adding Hebrew senses to many Greek definitions, and that

important activity gave Christians a ready-made Greek vocabulary for

preaching the gospel, whose background lay

    in the Old Testament.

    The Word on the Apocrypha

•With the help of the Apocrypha you now know what the Jews

think a Messiah is, and what they believe he will do.

The Word on the Dead Sea Scrolls• Essenes lived in Qumran

by the Dead Sea and we have found 236 scrolls of the Bible (all of the Old

Testament except Esther), which they hid in eleven caves near their

community prior to AD 70 when the Romans conquered Masada.

The Word on Judaism• Judaism received special status as a

religio licita (legal religion). Not only did this exempt them from pagan practices,

but it was significant for the spread of the gospel, because Christianity was initially viewed by the Romans as simply a sect

    within Judaism.
