The Church of England has had anunexpected burst of publicity overwhat could be termed “Lord’sPrayer Gate”.

The decision of a cinemaadvertising agency to refuse to showan ad for the Church of Englandfeaturing the Lord’s Prayer (afterpreviously encouraging the churchto do it and offering a discount!) hasbeen curious.

Also curious has been thereaction of the Muslim Council ofGreat Britain, the Equality andHuman Rights Commission, andsuch Atheist luminaries as StephenFry and Richard Dawkins – whohave all criticised the decision.

Professor Dawkins also came upwith this wonderfully backhandedsupporting statement:

“If anybody is ‘offended’ bysomething so trivial as a prayer, theydeserve to be offended.”

There have been many columninches written about the rights andwrongs of this decision but oneissue that I think is of fundamentalimportance is whether it is offensiveto anybody, or at least any moreoffensive than many cinema advertsthat are at best morally dubious.

People who claim to be “liberal”often resort to this argument whenthey are seeking to water downothers’ convictions.

I pray you have awonderful Christmas

2 3

Another classic example of thisis the continuing trend of emptyingChristmas of any religiouscontent. Father Christmas andRudolph cards are fun and good, but it is getting increasinglydifficult to find “Christmas” cardswith Mary, Joseph, or even a Staron them, because of worries overoffending people. We may have different

approaches to Christmas. Someof us may not observeChristmas in a religious way.But it seems to me that we arediminished as a culture if weforget the original reason for the

celebration, even if that reasonis not a belief we share.

Those of us with children arewell aware of the changes theybring to our lives – life is never thesame again.

At Christmas we celebrate thefact that one tiny life has changedthe world irrevocably – as the wordsbelow illustrate so well.

My prayer this Christmas is thatwe will all have a good, fulfilling andfun filled rest and that the seasonaffords us all the chance to ponderthe impact of that.

Fr Matthew

He was born in an obscure villageThe child of a peasant womanHe grew up in another obscure villageWhere he worked in a carpenter shopUntil he was thirty when publicopinion turned against himHe never wrote a bookHe never held an officeHe never went to collegeHe never visited a big cityHe never travelled more than twohundred milesFrom the place where he was bornHe did none of the thingsUsually associated with greatnessHe had no credentials but himself

He was only thirty three

His friends ran awayOne of them denied himHe was turned over to his enemiesAnd went through the mockery of a trial

He was nailed to a cross between twothievesWhile dying, his executionersgambled for his clothingThe only property he had on earth

When he was deadHe was laid in a borrowed graveThrough the pity of a friend

Nineteen centuries have come and goneAnd today Jesus is the central figureof the human raceAnd the leader of mankind's progressAll the armies that have ever marchedAll the navies that have ever sailedAll the parliaments that have ever satAll the kings that ever reigned put togetherHave not affected the life of mankindon earthAs powerfully as that one solitary life.

I’m not known for my generosity atChristmas time.

You see, Samantha and I don’t havechildren, although we do have Monty, our chocolate Jack Russell who I’m surewill get spoilt rotten.

But, as long as I can remember I’vejust given token presents to friends andfamily (I have 6 sisters and 5 brothers),like a candle, gift vouchers or a bottle ofwine. Well, to be honest: whatever mywife buys. I think you get the picture!

But this is all about to change, as I’mgoing to bestow you, the reader, withgifts. Shall we say a gardener’s gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Ok, maybe that’s a littleOTT. But I’m going togive you somegardeningtips

that I’m sure will have you enjoying yourgarden more.

Firstly, if you wish to buy gardeningtools for the gardener in your home, thenbuy the best you can afford.

You get what you pay for in thehorticultural world. Take for examplesecateurs: mine are Felco no. 8 and costaround £55.

I keep them sharpened and cleanand they are as good as new 8 yearsafter I brought them (Remember I usethem nearly every day). On the otherhand, a £9.99 pair from a DIY storewould do well to last a summer.

I also have a wonderful non-bend

fork and a `bog standard` fork, thedifference in price is £20.00. The non-bend fork is still going strong after 5years but the cheaper fork lasted 3months.

One quality tool is better than adozen broken ones.

I won’t profess to have theknowledge of the three wise men but,my one piece ofhorticulturalwisdom is thatanyone can‘garden’ but noteveryone can be agardener. Why isthis, and what

separates a gardener from someonewho likes to garden?

It’s just one word, patience.Yes, there are pruning techniques

that seem to mystify the majority, and usgardeners seem to talk about plants in aforeign language (Latin: which I promiseto devote a column to in the future).

But patience in my opinion is thedifference: waiting for the right time toprune, rather than only deciding to pruneonce the shrub gets in the way of yourpath once too often!

Or sowing seeds and waiting 28 days forthem to germinate, then another 14 daysuntil the true leaf appears to prick themout, and another 28 days or so to nip thegrowing tip off which means the flowers/fruit take longer to arrive but you get abushy and more vigorous plant in thelong term.

And the patience to wait until the endof May to plant out bedding and not inthe Easter time when they go on sale!Or when a new plant doesn’t seem to begrowing as well as you like. It may well

be settling its roots in and next year itwill show you what it can do.

And lastly what would I buy thebudding gardener in your home? It hasto be a camera and a diary, to takephotos each month of the borders(helpful in many ways especially bulbplanting), and to record tasks as theyare done and thoughts as they come. And who knows, a gardener may yet beborn!

So it just leaves me say, thank youfor your kind comments during the year

and to wish you alla happy festiveseason and abrighter New Year!
