Introduction

This document details the compatibility of .dll and .ocx components, third party product integrations, plus 32 and 64 bit operating systems supported for this release of Visualfiles.

All of the third party products listed in the Third Party Integration Product Compatibility section below are compatible with this Visualfiles release unless otherwise stated.

For a full explanation of our third party integration and certification please refer to the Visualfiles/SolCase Third Party Product Integration Support and Compatibility policy document on the Customer Support Website.

64 Bit Client/Server Environments

This release of Visualfiles is compatible with both 32 and 64 bit client and server operating systems.

The Progress Database can be hosted on 32 or 64 bit operating systems using the 32 bit version of OpenEdge 11.3 SP1 and on Windows 2008 R2 64 bit using either 32 or 64 bit versions of OpenEdge 11.3 SP1.

The Visualfiles client requires the OpenEdge 32 bit runtime. This will run on a 64 bit operating system platform which are detailed below in Supported Operating Systems.

Note: There are separate install files and licence keys for 32 and 64 bit OpenEdge.

Note: Any one machine can have either 32 or 64 bit OpenEdge, but not both.

All core functionality and high level risk areas including Microsoft Office integration have been tested on a 64 bit Windows client with 64 bit Windows server to ensure compatibility. However, given the scale and flexibility of Visualfiles we cannot guarantee that every possible secondary function or third party integration has been tested on all possible platform configurations.

We do not anticipate any problems with untested functionality operating in a 64 bit environment. In the event of issues arising we will make every effort to resolve them subject to certification by the relevant third party supplier of their own product and version in the given environment.

Visualfiles Browser

Visualfiles 2014 is built upon Progress OpenEdge 11 and as a result the Visualfiles Browser is not supported by this release.

SOS Integration

Currently SOS Practice Manager and SOS Connect are not compatible with Progress OpenEdge 11.3SP1 therefore the integration with these products is not supported in this release of Visualfiles. Following discussion between SOS and LexisNexis, SOS have confirmed that it is their intention to release an OpenEdge 11 compliant version of Practice Manager at the end of Q1 2014.

3-Way Link - Visualfiles/SolCase/SOS

Due to the current OpenEdge incompatibility between SOS Practice Manager and Visualfiles, the 3 Way Link between Visualfiles, SolCase and SOS is not supported by this release of Visualfiles.

Microsoft Office Compatibility and Word Document Support

Visualfiles 2014 is certified as compatible with Office 2007, Office 2010 and Office 2013.

The original Outlook integration (Outlook M2 Plug-in) is not certified or supported with Office 2013. In order to use the advanced Outlook 2013 integration, you will need to upgrade to Outlook Plus. Standard Outlook integration is unaffected and is both certified and supported with Outlook 2013. Please contact your LexisNexis Account Manager for more information.

Current M2 users are entitled to the Outlook Plus upgrade.

Note: The Visualfiles client is 32 bit and therefore it is incompatible with 64 bit versions of Microsoft Office.

With Office 2007, Microsoft introduced a new XML-based format for Word documents, denoted by the .docx file extension. The established .doc format is retained for backward compatibility. Documents in either format can be created, imported, saved, opened and edited within Visualfiles history with either Office 2007, 2010 or 2013, so compatibility is maintained.

Note: Saving documents in this format is only possible when you are using the COM Word Link and you have set the Document Type to .docx.

Redemption

If you use the third party control redemption.dll to suppress Microsoft security warnings in Outlook, note that this version of Visualfiles is only compatible with Redemption 4.0.0.452 or later. If you have an earlier version of redemption.dll, we advise you to obtain, install and register an up to date version on each client PC.

Note: The redemption.dll may not be required if you are running Office 2007, 2010 or 2013 with suitable antivirus protection. LexisNexis do not support Redemption.

Outlook Integration - Using Word as your Email Editor

Email integration with Microsoft Office is provided through Outlook, not Word.

Visualfiles integration with Outlook using the feature ‘Use Microsoft Office Word to edit e-mail messages’ remains unsupported due to certain elements of its programmer’s interface that do not allow us to provide full functionality.

If you have users that have set this feature in Outlook, we strongly recommend that they use Outlook for producing emails in order to benefit from the fully supported functionality with Visualfiles.

Third Party Integration Product Compatibility

In this table, the following definitions apply for the specified third party product versions:

Cert Integration has been fully tested on the specified platform during QA procedures applied to this Visualfiles release and is therefore certified.

Note: Only third party product integrations that are affected by a fix included in a Service Pack are retested. Integrations in Service Pack releases are marked as certified on the basis of the continued validity of the testing conducted in the last major release.

N/C Integration should work on the specified platform, based on experience and testing of previous releases, but it has not been tested on the specified platform during QA procedures applied to this release. In these instances, clients are advised to perform their own integration testing prior to upgrade.

N/A Integration is not available on the specified platform.

Platform The Platform column in the table below indicates the currently supported Operating Systems for Visualfiles and represents a baseline standard for the testing performed by Visualfiles QA.
