In order to faithfully replicate the look of an heirloom, Palos Verdes

designs are heavily hand-distressed in the initial part of the finishing

process. Artisans then burnish the edges to simulate use over time,

apply padding stains to create highlights and shadows, and then hand

wax the surface to achieve a soft satin luster. The result is a new piece of

furniture with the hand and character of a fine antique.

reinterprets the design by continuing the dramatic curvature all the way up to the top back rail.

THE LOST WAX CASTING PROCESS

The art of casting precious metals with intricate carvings hasbeen practiced in the jewelry trade for thousands of years.When cabinet makers first began to utilize brass for decorativehardware, these proven techniques were applied to furniture.

For complex and intricate designs, the “ lost wax casting”process is the only way to achieve the required level of detail.It allows any design that can be hand carved into wax to befaithfully translated into metal.

The process begins with the creation of an original waxmodel by a master carver. From the original, a rubber mold ismade. By pouring hot wax into the rubber mold and allowingit to cool, multiple wax castings are produced.

These replicas of the original wax casting are then coveredwith several coats of ceramic slurry, creating a hard shell.The ceramic-covered molds are placed into a kiln andslowly heated until all of the wax from the interior hasmelted away, leaving a perfectly formed shell – thus thename “ lost wax casting.”

Hot molten brass is then poured into a small opening inthe ceramic shell and allowed to cool. Once cooled, theceramic shell is broken open, leaving a perfectly cast pieceof solid brass hardware. Artisans then clean and detail thefinished brass piece, polishing it by hand.

This technique is both time-consuming and labor intensive,but remains the most effective method of creating hardwarewith the detail and finesse of fine jewelry.
