Leveraging ICT in Support of Modern Learning
Mike [email protected]
Successful Education? As individuals, Learners and EducatorsWe do not live in isolationWe are part of a social environmentWe are part of an economic system
Are our learners being adequately prepared to actively engage in, and play a significant role in a dynamically developing digital world?
How do we measure success? Is a pass enough? Is it how many certificates issued? Is it about throughput targets? Is it about learners coping in society? Is it about health of economy? Is it reduced unemployment? Is it national competitiveness? Is it ranking of institution in sector?

Four Broad Categories:
Ways of thinking. Creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and learning

Tools for working. Information and communications technology (ICT) and information literacy
Skills for living in the world. Citizenship, life and career, and personal and social responsibility
Two Key 21st Century Skills…two skills that span all four categories:
Collaborative problem-solving. Working together to solve acommon challenge, which involves the contribution andexchange of ideas, knowledge or resources to achieve thegoal.
ICT literacy — learning in digital networks. Learning throughdigital means, such as social networking, ICT literacy, technological awareness and simulation. Each of theseelements enables individuals to function in social networksand contribute to the development of social andintellectual capital.

Blended Learning - formal education program in which a student
learns at least in part through online learning, with some element of
student control over time, place, path, and/or pace; at least in part in
a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home..
Flipped Class - moving the
content coverage to outside the
class in order to devote
precious, in-class time to
practice of important course
skills.
By participating in structured
activities in class, the students
rehearse aspects of critical
thinking with their peers andgauge their own proficiency.

Learning is a process, not a product
Learning is not something done to students, rather something students themselves do!Learning involves change in knowledge, beliefs, behaviours and attitudes
Lasting impact on how students think and act
Direct result of how students interpret and respond to their experiencesPast or Present, Conscious and Unconscious
Increased Communication -> Increased Student InteractionNot Necessarily Geared to Academic Facilitation (Lipponen, 2002)
