LEVEL  I  CPTED  CERTIFICATE  COURSE    1.0   Goals    The  goal  of  this  basic  Crime  Prevention  Through  Environmental  Design  (CPTED)  course,  is  to  provide  the  participant  with  a  solid,  practical,  working  knowledge  of  CPTED.  To  provide  the  successful  participant  with  the  necessary  skills  and  knowledge  to  become  actively  involved  in  the  planning,  design  and/or  development  process  as  it  relates  to  preventing  crime  and  nuisance  behaviour  through  the  incorporation  of  CPTED  design  strategies.  To  understand  the  direct  relationship  between  the  physical  environment  and  crime.  The  awareness  of  the  relationship  between  design  professionals,  municipalities  and  CPTED  Practitioners  in  creating  safer  more  productive  environments.    1.1   Strategies    Course  instructor  will  present  subjects  in  classroom  and  field  trip  settings,  utilizing  audio,  visual  and  site  inspection  techniques  and  experiences.  The  bulk  of  participant  learning  will  be  done  in  a  "hands  on"  manner,  utilizing  individual  and  syndicate  projects.    Projects,  case  studies,  a  written  test  and  group  participation  will  provide  the  participant  with  the  opportunity  to  demonstrate  their  understanding  of  course  objectives.  Daily  case  study  assignments  will  prepare  participants  for  the  main  syndicate  project  at  the  end  of  the  course.    This  final  project  will  utilize  all  principals  of  CPTED,  urban  planning,  architectural  and  landscape  design  and  land  use.  Syndicates  will  be  assigned  real  world  sites  to  assess  and  report  on  and  provide  their  CPTED  design  strategies  for  reducing  crime  and  nuisance  behaviour  through  a  site  plan  design.        Each  syndicate  will  make  an  in-­class  presentation  of  their  assessment  and  design  on  the  final  day.    Presentations  will  be  critiqued  and  evaluated  by  classmates  and  the  instructor.    Successful  participants  will  be  issued  with  a  Level  I  CPTED  Certificate.    Some  evening  work  is  involved  in  Level  I  CPTED  Course.  Evening  work  can  be  accomplished  according  to  participant’s  availability.      Level  I  Basic  CPTED  Course  is  a  pre-­requisite  for  those  wishing  to  take  the    Level  2  Advanced  CPTED  Course.

FACILITATOR  

Greg  Perkins    Greg  Perkins  is  a  former  police  officer  with  the  London  Police  Department  and  is  one  of  Canada’s  foremost  experts  in  Crime  Prevention  Through  Environmental  Design.    He  is  the  owner  of  Liahona  Security  Consortium  Inc.,  which  has  been  helping  to  create  safer  environments  for  more  than  24  years.    

Mr.  Perkins  received  his  Level  I  Basic  and  Level  II  Advanced  CPTED  Certification  through  the  National  Crime  Prevention  Institute  (NCPI)  at  the  University  of  Louisville  (Kentucky).  He  has  consulted  on  hundreds  of  projects  for  public  and  private  sector  designs,  threat/risk/security  assessment  and  project  management.      

He  currently  provides  CPTED  training  throughout  British  Columbia,  Canada  and  the  United  States.  Liahona  Security  has  been  the  sole  source  provider  of  CPTED  training  to  the  “E”  Division  RCMP  for  the  past  18  years.  He  has  lectured  to  Federal,  Provincial,  Regional  and  Municipal  Governments  and  Design  Professional  Associations.    

Mr.  Perkins  is  associated  with  such  professional  organizations  as:  the  International  CPTED  Association  (ICA),  British  Columbia  Crime  Prevention  Association  (BCCPA)  and  is  Co-­founder  &  Chair  of  the  non-­profit  Society  -­  CPTED  BC  Association  and  the  Canadian  Association  of  Threat  Assessment  Professionals  (CATAP).
