OSLO: The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded its 2008 Peace Prize on Friday to Martti Ahtisaari, the former Finnish president who has been associated over decades with peace efforts and quiet, cautious diplomacy from Asia to Africa and Europe. Out of 197 people nominated for the annual prize, the committee said, Ahtisaari had been chosen "for his important efforts in several continents and over three decades to resolve international conflicts."

He has played a central role in ending conflicts that took root in the late 20th century and threatened the early 21st century with conflagrations in many places. Specifically, the committee mentioned his work in ending South African domination of Namibia, the former South-West Africa, from the 1970s to the late 1990s , and peace efforts in the Indonesian province of Aceh, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Central Asia, the Horn of Africa and, most recently, in Iraq.

In an initial response, Ahtisaari said he was "very pleased and grateful" at receiving the prize, which is worth $1.4 million. It will be awarded to him at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10.

In a television interview after the award was announced, Ahtisaari indicated that he might slow the pace of his travels, which, he said, had kept him away from Finland for 200 days a year. "I want to spend more time with my wife," he said.

Martti Ahtisaari was born in Russia. His father, Oiva Ahtisaari had immigrated to Finland in 1929, and his mother;Tyyne, moved to Kuopio with her son to escape immediate danger from the war. Kuopio was where Ahtisaari spent most of his childhood and first attending school at "Kuopion Lyseo".

When I first arrived in Shanghai, I was well prepared to enter a completely new world containing unknown, exotic and strange things. In fact, there definitely are many differences between China and Europe in general, such as language, food and people's outlook. However when I walked along the streets I realized Shanghai is not on another planet.

Compared with my hometown of Berlin, Shanghai has many similarities. Shanghainese drive the same cars, live in similar houses (some of them built by German architects) and at least the shops resemble ours. I was astonished to see an advertisement for IKEA, which represents for me the young European home style. Well, things differ from my expectations because they are so similar to the European way of life.

Moreover, there are some points, which illustrate a closer relation between Shanghai and Berlin. Glancing at the history of the cities makes this understandable. Both cities were important at the beginning of the 20th century: Shanghai as one of Asia's eminent ports and Berlin as the capital of the German Empire and later the Weimar Republic.

The denim was brought from France by ships many Genoese sailors , from Genoa , Italy , in the crew . From this city’s name came the name jeans . Blue jeans used to be popular among cowboys in the Wild West and came to the East only after the 1930’s . Later in the 1950’s , movie stars such as James Dean and Marlon Brando made jeans popular with American teenagers . In 1970’s designers such as Calvin Klein and Gloria made blue jeans popular with people of all ages .
