Construction starting in Carrum The Victorian Government is removing 13 dangerous level crossings on the Frankston line and building a new train storage facility, to improve safety, reduce congestion and run more trains, more often.

In Carrum, three dangerous level crossings will be removed, and a new station will be built. McLeod Road will be extended right through to the beach and a new promenade and village square will be created to connect the heart of Carrum to the bay.

The first stage of works will begin early next year with the construction of the new Station Street road bridge across Patterson River. The bridge will open in late 2018.

This project will transform Carrum. It will increase safety, improve travel times and create amazing new community spaces for generations of residents and visitors to enjoy.

Major improvements to traffic connections will provide a more direct road network, making local streets safer and quieter for drivers, riders and residents.

Across the Frankston line, work to remove level crossings is well underway. Three are already gone, Skye/Overton Road, Frankston is under construction and work is starting in Carrum and Seaford.

Safer walking and cycling connectionsGetting to the beach from Carrum village and the station will be easier for cyclists and pedestrians with four safe crossings across Nepean Highway.

The existing pedestrian crossing will remain across the Nepean Highway and new crossings will be added at McLeod Road, Progress Avenue and near the Carrum Bowling Club.

A walking and cycling underpass will also be created at Eel Race Road. A new, continuous walking and cycling path will run from Carrum through Seaford and on to Frankston.

The new path will connect to existing paths in the area, making it easier to travel between suburbs and connecting communities along the bay.

Station Street road bridge over Patterson RiverThank you to everyone who told us their vision for Carrum – we’ve heard that the local community wants traffic improvements, with safer, better connections to the station, beach and surrounding suburbs.

The long-awaited Station Street road bridge over Patterson River will improve short, local trips between Carrum and Bonbeach and allow the closure of the dangerous level crossing at Mascot Avenue, Bonbeach.

The bridge includes new disability compliant walking and cycling ramps connecting Station Street to the river paths.

Construction will begin in 2018, and the bridge will open in late 2018.

The new bridge will enhance connections between the river, beach and village areas.

CARRUM REVITALISATION

New Carrum StationWe’ve been working with our new construction partners to improve the new station design based on your feedback.

Station features:• station set further back from residents

• low, single-storey station buildings in line with Carrum’s village character

• natural materials and sandy coastal colours to reflect the beachside location

• Kiss'n'Ride and car park below the station improving safety for commuters

• second entrance near Walkers Road to improve access

• safe indoor waiting areas

• island platform with a light, sleek central canopy

• better weather protection on platforms – to shade and shelter

• removing the Carrum train storage facility will provide space for commuter car parking and new community spaces near Carrum Station.

The new village square will provide links between the new Carrum station, local

shops and the beach.

New village square and beach promenadeWhen we asked the local community what they wanted as part of Carrum’s revitalisation, we heard that improved, safe connections between the beach, station and shops are important.

Locals also wanted increased parking, and flexible community spaces that can be used year-round.

The McLeod Road extension and new beach promenade will provide safer access to the beach and more community space. Dozens of additional car parks will be added across the beach promenade and village square. The square will also include vibrant open space and facilities to actively link both sides of Carrum.

How you can help transform Carrum

Carrum Revitalisation Reference Group (CRRG) The CRRG has been established with local traders, community representatives and industry experts. It will help to shape the revitalisation of Carrum as designs are developed. The Group will input on:

• optimising the new community spaces for year-round, multipurpose use

• landscaping design and plant varieties

• locations for pedestrian connections.

Feedback and ideas from the community will be presented at CRRG meetings.

Why we're doing thisSafetyThere have been 41 reported safety incidents across Station Street, Eel Race Road and Mascot Avenue level crossings between 2005 – 2014.

Removing these dangerous level crossings will eliminate the risk of incidents between drivers, cyclists and pedestrians and metro and freight trains.

Congestion and traffic improvementsMajor road network improvements will significantly reduce congestion, removing the need for drivers to  rat-run through local roads.

Getting around Carrum will become safer and easier for everyone, with a decrease in travel times for most trips in the area.

Removing the boom gates at Station Street will provide nearly twice as much time to keep traffic moving through Carrum, meaning no more waiting for trains.

The new village square will provide safe connections to the beach, local shops and

public transport.
