Qualification requirements

A minimum of 80% attendance of the course is required by the awarding body.

This qualification involves a combination of internal and external assessment of assignments and skills practice - there is no exam to sit! Any assistance that may be necessary will be given with course work and writing presentation.

Course Details

Our next level 3 courses are commencing on: 13 January 2011 (Thursday mornings 9.30am – 1pm)

OR 16 March 2011 (Wednesday mornings 9.30am – 1pm)

NB. We may run these as evening courses if there is sufficient demand – please ask us!

Course Duration: This course will be run over a period of approximately six months

Hours: 80 Guided Learning Hours. In addition to the guided learning hours we estimate that most candidates will need to

allow 60 hours for self-study and assignment preparation

Venue: Lecture Room, Top Floor, Station House, Newton Abbot

Cost of course: £650.00

Theory Base

The theoretical model and skills practice will be mainly Carl Rogers’ Person Centred model but the following models will be

used for comparison purposes:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Transactional Analysis (TA)

Outcomes

By the end of the course candidates should be able to:

1. Use competently and effectively a range of counselling skills, specifically:

Initiating a counselling skills interaction

Functioning in the interaction with the use of the following skills:

Attentiveness and rapport building Active listening, including the use of minimal encouragers and the managing of silence Empathic listening Effective questioning Paraphrasing and summarising Focusing and challenging Reflecting on the counselling skills process and immediacy

Awareness of boundaries including referrals Works at appropriate pace Checks understanding with the speaker

Concluding individual sessions Ending a series of sessions

2. Demonstrate awareness and acceptance of the principles in a recognised code of practice such as the current BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

3. Recognise and accept that they are not qualified counsellors

4. Show a working understanding of one model of counselling and an awareness of two other models and ways of working

and of the need to avoid the danger of using techniques based on a limited understanding

5. Value and make use of casework supervision within their own organisational settings to obtain support and further learning and development of their counselling skills through this process. This can also be achieved through use of personal experiences.

6. Reflect constructively on themselves, their own life experiences, and their interactions with others and evidence

their own personal and professional growth processes.
